Foreigner - Cold As Ice (Live At The Rainbow '78) w/ an EML 101

video upload by Mercury

EML 101 lead at 4:10

Two synth spotting videos sent in via Dustin who had the following to say (2nd video below):

"I don't recall ever seeing an EML 101 onstage with any of the big 70's radio bands -of course, it's almost always the MiniMoog, Arp 2600/Odyssey, etc. So I was a bit baffled trying to figure out exactly what synth this is during this live video.

It's a bit hard to see, and it's on a custom raised stand facing the audience, separate from the connected keyboard. The tip off for me that it might be an EML 101 was the distinct metal closing latch that you can see here on the keyboard.

As always, this killer synth sounds great, and kudos to him for having the guts to play a bit of a different rig than seemed to be on everyones elses stage at the time.

Anybody know of another big band like this using EML's live?

Update: some mentions of other artists that used the EML 101 in previous posts here.

And:

Foreigner - Double Vision (Official Music Video)

video upload by RHINO

In this video you can clearly see that this is an EML 101 (pause at 0:52).

"You're watching the official music video for Foreigner - 'Double Vision' from the album 'Double Vision' (1978). 'Double Vision' reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100."

Update2 via Rick Steff in the comments: "al talks about it here: https://al-greenwood.com/home/blog/a-classic-turns-50" From that link:

A CLASSIC TURNS 50!

The EML 101 Synthesizer turns 50 this year! I was working with the late and great Walter Sear at Sear Sound Studio when he introduced me to this ground-breaking synth. He was also a partner with Robert Moog and instrumental in developing the Minimoog. I used this synth on the first 2 Foreigner albums on the tracks - 'Feels Like the First Time, Cold As Ice, Damage is Done, and Spellbinder.

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for a semi-modular analog synthesizer - Make Noise 0-coast. It is a collection of 50 presets that includes: 16 Plucks, 14 Basses, 16 Leads, 4 FXs.

There is a wide range of timbres inside the pack: simple and complex, soft and aggressive, musical and experimental, harmonic and inharmonic, playable and modular-style.

📚 Get the soundset: https://bit.ly/3EbL3n6

The sounds are suitable for many genres of electronic music: Techno, Ambient, House, Deep, Progressive, Trance, Minimal, IDM, Downtempo, Lounge, Chill Out, Electronica, Dark/Noise, Industrial, and many others.

Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters worth tweaking during the playback, how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn lots of things about the synth and discover its true depth.

To recreate these patches, you need up to 11 patch cords.
There are audio examples of all patches inside the folder with the soundset.

Five cheap 80s keyboards...

A new series by ALFONSE. You can find him on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Twitter, and Instagram.

Playlist:

1 Five cheap 80s keyboards...
Music: "Eight" (C) Copyright 2019 Alfonse

Intro to a new series of videos using sounds from ageing home keyboards together with current production tools. All sounds you hear in the track were made using the Casio SK-1 (a sampling keyboard), Casio MT-52, Yamaha PSS-680, Yamaha PSS-580, and Amstrad CKX100. They were recorded to a DAW, where compression, EQ, reverb, and delay were added as required.
2. Casio SK-1 sampling keyboard demo - "Rapid Rhino"
All sounds you hear in the track were made using the Casio SK-1 sampler or its factory sounds and were recorded to a DAW, where compression, EQ, reverb, delay and chorus were added as required. Individual drum hits were sampled from slowed-down SK-1 rhythms, to allow fresh beats to be built, rather than using the rhythms found on the SK-1 itself. If you hear something in the track and can't quite figure out where it came from, that was probably a vocal sample. It has a great 8-bit / 9.38kHz lo-fi sound; grainy and interesting...

The aim of this series of videos is to see what you can create using sounds from ageing home keyboards together with current production tools. Personally, I'm a fan of playing a vintage keyboard like this in its original state (not circuit bent) - it's more than just a retro toy...

3. Yamaha Portasound PSS-680 FM keyboard demo - "Splendid Larryo"
All sounds you hear in the track were made using the PSS-680 and recorded to a DAW, where compression, EQ, reverb, delay and chorus were added as required. Individual drum hits were sampled from the drum pads and processed (the 680's kick drum is horrible, so that needed some attention for a start...), to allow fresh beats to be built, rather than using the rhythms found on the PSS-680 itself.

The aim of these videos is to see what you can create using sounds from retro classic keyboards together with current production tools. The 680 has a 2 operator FM synth on board, which can be edited via the Digital Synthesizer parameters on the front panel; there are limited editing options, but enough to get a cool range of sounds. It also has Midi In, Out and Thru, allowing for plenty of cool connectivity with controllers, computers and other hardware. It's basically identical to the PSS-780, aside from some different coloured pads and other parts, and has the same sound chips as the PSS-480 and 580, which were the next rung down in the product line.

For those who have a keyboard from that range, here are the parameters for some of the main patches:
First bass: voice 34: 0.63 1.63 2.10 3.15 4.01 5.00 6.06 7.69
Second bass: voice 74: 0.30 1.63 2.22 3.21 4.02 5.01 6.07 7.73
Main lead: voice 60: 0.26 1.47 2.16 3.25 4.04 5.02 6.06 7.73
Bridge lead: voice 91: 6.04 7.99
End lead: voice 02: 0.41 1.63 2.02 3.01 4.01 5.01 6.06 7.91 + portamento 05

More to come! I'll put new posts up to let you know when they come in.

Rhino - FM Synthesizer using Arduino and Max Msp

Published on Oct 18, 2017

Googlish:

"This project was done within the framework of the Electronic Music Instruments course of the Department of Music Engineering of Technology and Acoustics.

It is a synthesizer based on the idea of Theremin in how to interact with the user, while in terms of its sound coloring it is based on the Frequency Modulation Synthesis technique.

The user, by moving the hand, controls a sequence of notes as a progression of a music scale he chooses. While at the same time it can regulate the spectral content by manipulating the potentiometers. The sound effect it generates is based on the reasons for its harmonicity and the effect it will choose to accompany the basic sound generator. The purpose is to give the user the freedom to shape the instrument's complexion with a variety of combinations by experimenting with the controller.

For construction I used an Arduino Mega 2560, and the Ultrasonic Sensor HC-SR04 motion sensor.

The sound generator was programmed into Max Msp's environment. "

Beastie Boys Cut the Ribbon on the MiniMoogseum!

video upload by moogfoundation

moogfoundation — May 23, 2010 — "Hip Hop Legends Perform Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on MiniMoogseum Installation, Paying Tribute to the Moog Legacy!

http://moogfoundation.org/

The Beastie Boys have been rocking crowds the world over for more than 25 years; they are the undeniable innovators of both hip hop and rock and roll. Known for looking forward and backward, the Beastie Boys were among the first to embrace the phat analog Moog sound in the late 80s and early 90s at a point when the world of synthesis had gone largely digital.

How fitting it was to have the Beastie Boys swing through town and perform a ribbon cutting ceremony on the Foundation's MiniMoogseum installation in the Orange Peel, once again championing the Bob Moog and his legacy of pioneering synthesis.

Dubbed the MiniMoogseum, the eight foot high showcase serves as the first permanent installation of Bob Moog's archives, including one of his Grammy awards and relics from the early development of Moog synthesizers. Michelle Moog-Koussa, who serves as the Executive Director of the Foundation named after her father, explained that Over the decades to come, hundreds of thousands of people will see the installation as they visit the Orange Peel... which was recently voted in the top five in the country by Rolling Stone magazine. The "MiniMoogseum" can be thought of as a small scale version of the future "Moogseum", coming soon to the Asheville area.

Beastie Boys join a growing group of celebrity musicians, including Stevie Wonder, Keith Emerson, and Billy Corgan who have all voiced their support of the Foundation's mission to teach science to children using musical instruments. In the video the band expresses that they are ...proud and happy to be here at the beginning of this beautiful thing.....the Moogseum. They continue by saying There should be a Moog synthesizer in every classroom.

This video marks the first in a new series of videos and blogs that the Foundation is calling "Voices" -- reflections and ideas from the wider Moog community, focused on how Bob Moog inspired their creativity.

Making the MiniMoogseum a Reality: Volunteers and Sponsors

The MiniMoogseum was designed and built by a team of volunteers and sponsors—the foundation playfully refers to them as Rockstars--including Gene Felice, Domus Aurea Woodworking Design, Steve Dunnington and Mike Pieo.

Materials for the project were donated by Cormark International, Speedy Graphics, Moog Music, Asheville Hardware and Henco Reprographics. This project is the first step in an iterative process for the Foundation. The full-sized Moogseum, scheduled to open in four years, will feature interactive and experiential exhibits that inspire the next generation of Bob Moog like innovators, as well as an intimate performance area, where musicians from around the world can participate in the Foundation's programming.

Special thanks to Meg, Rhino & Jon Leidel for capturing this even on both video and photo!"
