"Today, we're excited to announce that the newest addition to our family of semi-modular synthesizers, Subharmonicon, is now available worldwide.

Subharmonicon is an intensely creative analog synthesizer capable of complex sounds and patterns, yet is incredibly simple to use. With two VCOs, four Subharmonic Oscillators, two 4-Step Sequencers, and four Rhythm Generators, this new musical machine is designed for the exploration of sequences that unfold and evolve over time, spiraling through six-tone subharmonic chords and organic polyrhythms.

Although no patching is required to start creating, Subharmonicon can be patched into itself, expanding its onboard capabilities, or interfaced with Mother-32, DFAM, and other external Eurorack-compatible gear for endless possibilities."

"Subharmonicon is a semi-modular polyrhythmic analog synthesizer that employs a 6-tone sound engine and multi-layered clock generator to explore the world of subharmonics, polyrhythms, and the unique relationships they create.

Subharmonicon’s characteristic sound starts with two analog VCOs and four Subharmonic Oscillators for a total of six powerful sound sources. Each subharmonic tone is mathematically derived from one of the two main VCOs, giving the resulting chord shapes a beautifully coherent quality. Onboard quantization lets you dial in perfect intervals every time with selections for multiple tuning systems. Choose from contemporary Equal Temperament settings, the heavenly intervals of Just Intonation, or the unlimited freedom of no quantization at all.
Animating Subharmonicon’s distinctive chord shapes is done through a polyrhythmic pair of 4-Step Sequencers. Each sequencer is clocked by any or all of four Rhythm Generators that output mathematical divisions of the master tempo. Layer multiple Rhythm Generators on top of each other to create complex polyrhythms and discover inspiring new patterns and styles. Delve into Subharmonicon’s dual Envelope Generators, Moog Ladder Filter, and analog VCA to call up dynamic articulations ranging from lush pads and blurred edges to percussive plosives and ritualistic rhythms.

Although no patching is required to start creating, exploring Subharmonicon’s modular patchbay unlocks worlds of possibilities as you make novel connections and plug into new ideas. The 32-point 3.5mm patchbay can be patched into itself, expanding Subharmonicon’s onboard capabilities, or interfaced with Mother-32, DFAM, and other external Eurorack-compatible gear (MIDI Type A adapter included for DIN to 3.5mm MIDI input). Use as a standalone synth with included +12V DC power supply or simply remove the front panel to install into any Eurorack system.
The Moog Subharmonicon is a versatile analog labyrinth of subharmonically derived synthesis and polyrhythmic sound, equally suited for losing oneself and simultaneously finding oneself."

Moog Subharmonicon Semi-Modular Synthesizer Sounds (with DFAM)

Published on May 11, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"The Moog Subharmonicon has been anticipated since it was the synth built during the 2018 Moogfest Engineering Workshop. It is finally here as a production synth with a few upgrades from the Moogfest version. This production version has midi, a built in quantizer, more envelope controls and a slightly different sequencer section.

The Subharmonicon is built around divider circuits. There are two VCOs that each have two dividers that output frequencies between the base frequency 1/1, an octave below 1/2, an octave and a fifth below 1/3, two octaves below 1/4, two octaves and a fourth below 1/5, all the way down to four octaves below 1/16. The two oscillators and the four subdivisions can be mixed together into six note chords that span multiple octaves, the oscillators then of course go through a Moog ladder filter. There are a pair of envelopes for the VCA and VCF.

The sequencing also works with subdivisions of the tempo clock, there are four dividers that divided the master clock from 1/1 to 1/16 in integer divisions. These four dividers can trigger the envelopes and clock the two four step sequencers. The sequencers can then modulate the pitch of the two main VCOs, or select which divisions the subdividers are set to. Since the Subharmonicon is semi-modular its has a patch bay where different signal and control routing setups can be experimented with. The patch bay also makes connecting the Subharmonicon to a Mother 32, DFAM, or any other semi-modular or eurorack synth easy.

In this video we showed a combination of the Subharmonicon by itself as well as with a DFAM for percussion and with a Cooper FX Outward V2. The sidechain style patch at 5:09 uses a Ritual Electronics Anima Function generator to create the sidechain envelope and the Subharmonicon is going through a Tiptop Echoz delay module.

Moog Subharmonicon Reviewed and Explained

Published on May 23, 2018 loopop

"The Subharmonicon is a lovely, interesting and different synth from Moog. Only around 100 were hand soldered and built at Moogfest's 2018 Engineering Workshop, and there's no information currently about whether it will be released commercially.

Even though availability is scarce, I decided to put together a review of this instrument, because the way it works is such a breath of fresh air when it comes to sound generation and sequencing. Also, one would hope that Moog will eventually mass produce the Subharmonicon, as they did for most, but not all past Engineer Workshop projects, like the DFAM and Werkstatt.

This review includes an interview with Steve Dunnington from Moog, who led the Subharmonicon project. Steve talks about the vintage synthesizers (Trautonium and Rhythmicon) and composition theory (Schillinger system) that inspired this synth.

So what makes the Subharmonicon special? Two main things. First, it has six (!) oscillators. These are sawtooth oscillators, a tribute to the original Trautonium. There are two main oscillators and each has two sawtooth sub oscillators, which can follow its main frequency at subharmonic intervals – divisions of anywhere between 1 and 15.

The second thing that makes it special is its sequencers. Each of the two oscillator groups has a sequencer dedicated to it. Initially, it may seem these sequencers are limited because they only have 4 steps each. However, the Subharmonicon sequencers aren't designed to just be played in a regular step-by-step fashion. Rather, their cadence is powered by up to 4 tempo sub-dividers, also based on the principle of subharmonics. This rhythmic core produces sequences far longer than 4 steps, repeating and skipping notes in very interesting and surprising ways. Each of the two sequencers can be configured to control either the pitch of its main VCO (and sub oscillators) or just modulate the subharmonic divisions – thus generating different chords on a per step basis.

In addition to new elements above the Subharmonicon contains controls we're used to seeing in Mother-32 and DFAM: a resonant low pass filter, AD envelopes for the VCA and filter, and a 32-jack patch bay with access to many of the internal controls."

SyllixMusic Patch From Scratch

Playlist:

1. Patch from Scratch: Modular Ambient on the Moog Subharmonicon and Mother 32
Welcome to Episode one of Patch from Scratch featuring the Moog Subharmonicon and Moog Mother 32! In this video I create an ambient patch (who would have thought?) with helpful on-screen text along the way. In the future I may explore live narration. We'll see.
2. Patch from Scratch 2: Modular Ambient - Moog Subharmonicon and Mother 32
Welcome to Episode Two of Patch from Scratch featuring the Moog Subharmonicon and Moog Mother 32! In this video I create yet another ambient patch with helpful on-screen text along the way.

This patch is similar to my first Patch from Scratch where I make use of the Assign (step random) output on the Mother 32. I'm really having fun making patches with it so I thought I would make another similar one. I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to patching, so hopefully I continue to improve as I continue to make these videos! Either way, I hope you enjoy it!
3. Patch from Scratch 3: Modular Ambient Wind Chimes - Moog Subharmonicon, Mother 32
Welcome to episode 3 of Patch from Scratch! Today we begin our modular journey entirely from scratch starting with the Subharmonicon and then moving on to the Moog Mother 32. I end up making what I called Analog Wind Chimes - a sparse, random dance of plucked melody between the two synths. Adding some delay from Logic Pro and Valhalla Supermassive helps put the icing on top.

Moog Subharmonicon and Matriarch in a Jam :: [Synth Recipe #74]

syncworm

"Ingredients:
– Moog Subharmonicon
– Moog Matriarch
– Elektron Digitakt

– Empress Reverb

So, what's goig on here?
Digitakt is the master clock and provides drums and some samples. It feeds the midi clock into the Matriarch which has programmed in two sequences (I'm alternating between them during this recipe). It plays mostly chords in a simple sequence. Matriarch and Subharmonicon are synced via CV clock. Subharmonicon runs its own sequencer providing steady bass and some plucking sounds on top. Both Subharmonicon's VCO's are CV controlled by the Matriarch, so a key pressed on the Matriarch changes the pitch of both of the Sub's VCO's keeping everything in tune.

And that's all! Enjoy! :)"

Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Subharmonicon. 50 Combo Patches. + Samples. Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for a semi-modular system, Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Subharmonicon.
It is a collection of 50 patches that include basses, drums/percussion, leads, plucks, stabs/chords, generative-style patterns. There is a wide range of sound colors inside the pack: massive and gentle, aggressive and soft, bright and dull, harmonic and dissonant tones, straight and polymetric rhythms.

🔮 Get the soundset: https://bit.ly/3x756yg

Highlights:
✅ high level of interconnection of the synths
✅ thoroughly set parameters
✅ detailed notes for patches full of tips and tricks
✅ audio examples in 3 versions: DFAM only, Subharmonicon only, both together
✅ to recreate these patches you need up to 12 patch cords
✅ one of my hardest work ever, I spent up to 2 hours for each patch
✅ FREE BONUS: 150 samples with Scale and BPM (75-126 BPM), Wav 24/44100

The main point of the soundset is the high level of interconnection, not just syncing the two synths with independent timbres (individual patches for DFAM and Subharmonicon are also available on my website). In this patchbook the timbres of the synths are soldered and can’t exist separately:
🔸 they modulate each other with Envelopes
🔸 a sequence from one synth may change parameters on the other one
🔸 triggers interaction, clock/rhythm, run/stop modulations break predictable patterns
🔸 audio signals from VCOs may be used as modulation sources to create harmonies/intervals or 🔸 crazy experimental inharmonic tones

At the same time, they play different and clear roles, it’s not a sound mess, but two synths working in close cooperation.

💽 Also, there’s a separate folder with WAV samples with the same timbres, with Scale and BPM information. You may use them inside a sampler or DAW if you want 100% same sound as in the examples. Slice them for one-shots or loops, this is a great material for further editing and processing.

The soundset is presented in the form of PDF-Document. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters worth tweaking during the playback, how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn lots of things about the synth and discover its true depth.

Each patch has audio examples, they help to understand how a patch is supposed to sound. Audio examples for a patch are presented in three variants: DFAM only, Subharmonicon only, and both together.

Synth trick: How mimic a Subharmonicon with Maths by Make Noise

Published on Jun 19, 2018 loopop

"The Moog Subharmonicon is a lovely instrument that unfortunately, as of June 2018, isn't available other than the 100 attendees that built it at the 2018 Moogfest Engineering Workshop.

What's unique about the Subharmonicon is its ability to take a core oscillator and generate sub oscillators at special sub-harmonic frequencies, which can produce harmonically pleasing results. It also has the ability to subdivide a tempo clock and the result is a poly-rhythmic clock that creates interesting patterns, when combined with other sequences clocked at different sub-divisions.

Maths by Make Noise however, is one of the most popular eurorack modules, and it turns out you can mimic the unique oscillator sub-harmonic and tempo subdivisions of the Subharmonicon with it.

The result is that one Maths unit can take a core oscillator generate two additional sub-harmonic oscillators at a broad range of sub-harmonic frequencies. Ditto for tempo subdivisions.

This clip shows you how."

Moog Modular Ambient - Subharmonicon and Mother 32

SyllixMusic

"Hello! Here's another ambient synth performance on the Subharmonicon and Mother 32. This time the focus is around a more plucked sound from the Subharmonicon with the Mother 32 sequenced overtop. The LFO rate on the Mother 32 is being controlled by the sequencer of the subharmonicon, so you get some cool varying modulation."
