Buchla & Tiptop Audio Release Model 296 Programable Spectral Processor

See the dealers on the right for availability.

Via Tiptop Audio.

"Today we celebrate the official release of an important project we started 2 years ago: the remaking of Don Buchla’s mega module, the awesome Model 296 Programable Spectral Processor. It is now available for pre-orders at our dealers at $699. Shipping to the dealers from us will start November 30. The 296 was first introduced in 1978 and very few were ever made. Making a module of such complexity at a time when electronic schematics were drawn with pencils, with 48 filters that were most likely hand calculated is just incredible. The 70’s were a great era of exploration and proof of audio electronics scientific theories, but for Don Buchla it seems like it was always something beyond theory. The 296 might at first look like an equalizer, but Don had totally different ideas for it. He managed to pack into it a 16 band analog modular spectral processor, a cross band vocoder plus a massive amount of patch points to work with his synthesizer system.

We are very proud of this project, so much has gone into making it, and thanks to your strong support of the 200t project we are able to price it like a mass produced product. To learn more about the 296t please check out the user manual. As its name implies, the 296t is complex and worth spending the time reading the user manual.

Buchla TipTop + Strymon Starlab // More than just blipblops

video upload by Dexba

"I wanted to be more regular with the uploads, but it turned out life always gets in the middle. But here we are: the most analog waves coming from the Buchla by TipTop Audio lineup crashing against the digital Strymon Starlab shore.
The setup is comprised of a double 258t (oscillator), one of which is producing the chords you've heard at the beginning, while the other is on modulation duty.
The main interest of the patch was going into the Starlab already in stereo, so the two channels of the 257t are used as mixers between Left Osc + Sum and the other Right Osc + Sum, in order to have stereo bouncing around more as an accent, rather than being too abrupt, all of this controlled by the S/H coming from the other oscillator going into the 266t. The infamous 292t gets to work both as a summing mixer and a normal VCA.
The extra two voices you hear (the higher one and the very low one) are from the oscillators used for the S/H process, which I tuned to be useful twice too!
Hope you'll enjoy it! 🧡"

Update on Tiptop Audio ART & Buchla Modules

You might remember the new ART format eurorack modules and upcoming Model 207t and 296t announced by Tiptop Audio back in March here.

The following is an update on them and new 3-Tier Mantis Studio Brackets in white. Check with the delears on the right on availability.

"The summer is coming to an end and we have been very busy making lots of new 200t modules, ART modules, and more. So lets get started:

Buchla & Tiptop Audio - Model 207t Mixer/Preamplifier
We finally finished prototyping and beta testing of the 207t and are very happy with how nice both the mixing stage and the microphone preamplifier sound. Production has started and we plan to get the 207t release late November early December and will probably price it about $249.

Altar 2 by Ritual Electronics - Demo and Overview

video upload by Stazma

"Today I'll be showing you the Altar 2, a very good sounding and looking analog 18dB/octave state variable discrete filter, made by Ritual Electronics in Marseille, France.

Because of it's look and the fact there's no filter in the Buchla & Tiptop Audio line Ive decided to use it in my 'Buchla Suitcase' for a recent two weeks modular class and everyone liked it there.

Have fun!

00:00 Intro
01:02 Overview
07:29 Talking Filter Patch
09:51 Ping It!
14:07 Drum Machine processing w/ System80 880
19:01 Feedback patching & jam
22:29 End talk"

The Ritual Electronics Altar is a 3-pole 18db/oct state-variable filter with the ability to smoothly crossfade between filter types. The module's resonance has an attenuverter in it's CV input which allows for quick bumps in the resonance that can act as "accents" to liven up your patterns. Additionally the module's input gain can drive the filter core into distortion, and the ability to run two inputs into the filter allows you to push it even harder. This combined with the module's crossfading filter design give Altar multiple options for ever changing, yet still very rich timbres.

ALTAR II FEATURES

3-pole, 18dB/oct state-variable filter for Eurorack modular synthesizers
Redesigned discrete transistor core
Filter type can smoothly fade between Bandpass, Lowpass, and Highpass modes
Input gain stage drives into distortion
CV for filter type blend (Color), filter cutoff frequency, and resonance—each with dedicated attenuverters

Electronic Music by Allen Strange

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"What you don't know does not exist. Without the efforts of MakeNoise and Jason Nolan most of us would not be aware of Allan's book and I would not be able to hold it in my hands and film it. I had no idea Allen Strange used to work and perform with Don Buchla in the Electronic Weasel Ensemble, where Pat Strange played the violin. Instead of alien sounds, they made 'eastcoast' music. We may need stop thinking in synthesis coasts. The book is a bit academic by nature, simply because the modular could only be found at the manufacturers, the university and a privileged group of musicians. So it's a bit like going back to college, and it may not be an easy book for people like me - who never went to college in the first place. This book is a bit out of my league, but I'll definitely revisit it for a few episodes, maybe learn a few new things and share it. It's a goldmine of electronic music knowledge, but it's only valuable if it can be applied. The book makes frequent mentions of classic Buchla 200 series modules. Thanks to TipTop and Buchla, we can enjoy them as if they were made yesterday.

Tiptop Audio & Buchla - Fake Delay & Bouncing Ball

video upload by Stazma

"Hello there!
Today I'll share with you a classic modular synth patch that I really enjoy using, it's also a great exercise to get a feel for how VCA's and envelopes can work together. It's actualy just one of the many ways you can patch this, wich will use any sound source (258t here) with the 281t, 257t and 292t as the main building blocks (you can of course patch this with similar modules). I like it in the Buchla contect as you can play with 292t modes and get different sounds this way.
Anyway, I hope this will be helpful. Have fun."

Buchla/Tiptop Audio 292T Quad Lopass Gate

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Welcome to Episode 06 of my Buchla/Tiptop 200 series video series. This time, we'll focus on the 292T Quad Lopass gate, the essential part of the system that brings everything together and defines the classic Buchla sound. Since the vintage 1960's Vactec Vactrols have become very rare (and expensive) TipTop had no choice but to make their own. And they did an AMAZING job."

Triglav 208 Timbre first Jam with Buchla & Tiptop Audio modules

video upload by Stazma

"Triglav Modular has been kind enought to send me on of their brand new '208 Timbre' module to try out, so I can make some demo videos for you all.
Here is my very first patch with it. It does sound damn good!"

via Triglav

"The 208 Timbre is a faithful recreation of the wavefolder from the later version of the Stored Program Sound Source Model 208.
Two additional trimmers were added to enable calibrating input and output levels to match any Eurorack oscillator."

Instruō Lúbadh & Cš-L // Tape Looper as a Glitch Ambient Machine

video upload by Dexba

"This video follows the live stream from two days ago!
A single voice from the Instruo Cs-L is being fed four different sequences coming from the TipTop Buchla 245t, passing through the two mixers of the 257t, being once again mixed into the Instruo [1]f before entering the Instruo Harmonàig. A touch of reverb coming from the Strymon Starlab, and the recording stereo into the Lubadh, using both the decks.
Tape emulation is cranked up, as the input volume, to get all the tape flavour even while passing through, and after a good amount of recording, you will hear the modulations ready to mangle the tape, overlaying some glitchy madness to the otherwise relatively calm background.
I hope you'll enjoy it! 🧡"

245t and SQ-1 Tips & Tricks - Buchla & Tiptop Audio

"More infos & affiliate links in the description // Support on Patreon to get samples from this session: https://www.patreon.com/join/stazma

Analog sequencers are not only for notes, in fact the 245t shines more at automating parameters of your synth patch in my opinion. I'll show you how I like to use it with an SQ-1 taking care of the melody part."

Top 3 Favorite Modulation Sources Picked by Our Pals Omri Cohen, Stazma, and The Unperson.

video upload by Perfect Circuit

"Modulation is one of the most important aspects of a modular synthesizer: it's what makes your sounds move and change over time. It's the way that you take control of your sounds. It's the way you bring sounds to life.

So picking the right modulation sources for your music is critical—but there are a LOAD of options out there. We reached out to a few of our friends to hear what THEIR favorite modulation sources are, and how they use them in their music...and this video is what they had to say.

The gear from the video:

Stazma's pick—Tiptop Buchla 266t: https://www.perfectcircuit.com/tiptop...
The Unperson's pick—Make Noise Maths: https://www.perfectcircuit.com/make-n...
