Altar 2 by Ritual Electronics - Demo and Overview

video upload by Stazma

"Today I'll be showing you the Altar 2, a very good sounding and looking analog 18dB/octave state variable discrete filter, made by Ritual Electronics in Marseille, France.

Because of it's look and the fact there's no filter in the Buchla & Tiptop Audio line Ive decided to use it in my 'Buchla Suitcase' for a recent two weeks modular class and everyone liked it there.

Have fun!

The Ritual Electronics Altar is a 3-pole 18db/oct state-variable filter with the ability to smoothly crossfade between filter types. The module's resonance has an attenuverter in it's CV input which allows for quick bumps in the resonance that can act as "accents" to liven up your patterns. Additionally the module's input gain can drive the filter core into distortion, and the ability to run two inputs into the filter allows you to push it even harder. This combined with the module's crossfading filter design give Altar multiple options for ever changing, yet still very rich timbres.

ALTAR II FEATURES

3-pole, 18dB/oct state-variable filter for Eurorack modular synthesizers
Redesigned discrete transistor core
Filter type can smoothly fade between Bandpass, Lowpass, and Highpass modes
Input gain stage drives into distortion
CV for filter type blend (Color), filter cutoff frequency, and resonance—each with dedicated attenuverters

Ambient Improvisation in Nature featuring ARP 2600 and Modular Synth

video upload by Bastian Benjamin

"Recently bought a power bank that is small yet powerful enough to keep my Modular and ARP 2600 running for 3 hours.

In this video, I recorded a small improvisation in a forest near my home. You can even see some horses in the background.

Although I think the lead melody sound is way too loud. I still decided to upload the video because I like the overall vibe a lot!

Sound sources:

Ritual Electronics Miasma: Testing diode variations on a drum-loop

video upload by cellrok

"With this module you get a few extra diodes and resistors to replace manually on the circuit board, without soldering. It changes the sound of the high-gain distortion and feedback. Sometimes subtle, somtimes extreme. Overall this module sounds great."

62HP Pingable Percussion Party Box - Super Synthesis

video by Perfect Circuit

"In this episode of the 62HP series, we’ve loaded up our Intellijel Palette case with a plethora of cool modules from Super Synthesis, alongside a few other key modules to build out a Pingable Percussion instrument. For our purposes, a 'ping' is a gate or trigger signal that will be used for things like triggering internal envelopes or resetting the phase of clock rates.

The centerpiece of this system is the PHRSR from Super Synthesis, a two-channel phrase recorder that captures knob movements in sequences up to 16 steps in length. One thing which makes this module unique is that the external clock input doesn’t override the internal clock, but rather it performs a hard sync reset that can be manipulated to create swing, syncopations, and other metric transformations. Also from Super Synthesis, we’re running dual 2OPFM modules for percussive FM sounds, the VCAR for CV controllable attack-release envelopes, and the ISO two-band DJ-style EQ.

We’ve also chosen a few multi-functional modules to give our compact Eurorack system a bit more versatility. The ever-flexible Ornament and Crime, malleable Pique from After Later Audio (based upon Peaks from Mutable Instruments), and the Milky Way multi-effects module by Endorphin.es help this little box pack a punch well above its weight. For sequencing, we’re relying upon the trusty SQ1 from Korg, and a special edition PO-133 Street Fighter Pocket Operator from Teenage Engineering processed by the Ritual Electronics Guillotine adds some additional sonic accompaniment.

Anima Ritual Electronics as dual VCO and overview curves with Pico LPG

Dziam Bass

"Hello Guys.
I recorded a small example with Anima from Ritual Electronics using two oscillators and his Curves flyby during the tune.
to this I added Pico LPG and Reverb from Black Hole DSP from Erica Synths .
Anima is Dual voltage controlled segments generator. AD / ASR envelope, LFO, Digital Oscillator and more
Anima draws its roots in the “west coast” analog function generators and updates them in the digital realm.
This take allows for extremely precise 1V/Oct tracking (10+ octaves) when in cycling mode, and for the control of the rising and falling segments (aka attack and decay) curves without affecting timing + a few more tricks.
The 1V/Oct input turns Anima into a very capable digital dual oscillator - when in cycle mode - with two types of frequency modulation and voltage controlled waveform crossfading. Cross patching is highly recommended for harsh mayhem synthesis!
The Curve parameter goes well beyond the usual Lin/Log control. It morphs smoothly between several curvatures (including the classic log, lin and exp) without affecting the rising and falling times.
For maximum versatility each channel of Anima has an output polarity switch, making it 0 to +8V in unipolar mode or -5 to 5V in bipolar mode, suitable for audio or bipolar CV generation."

Ritual Electronics Anima dual VCO - waves sound overview with Altar Filter

Dziam Bass

"Hello All.
today I have a small waves overview of Anima dual VCO from Ritual Electronics .

I reviewed some waves and pitch in the video so that you could see the power of this oscillator, in the second part I added a small sequence and also the Altar filter from Ritual .🔥🔥👌

Altar is a voltage controlled 3-pole, 18dB / octave state variable filter.

Altar The configuration of the filter can be smoothly crossfaded from BP to LP to HP. This unusual filter type arrangement brings out very nice harmonics and nuances. It is really suited to CV control. The CV input has an attenuverter. Resonance is under voltage control with attenuverter as well allowing for great timbre modulations. It is particularly useful to recreate accent patterns à la 303. There is a gain at Altar input to beef up your signal which then distort the filter core. The filter tracks 1V / oct for 4-5 octaves and can turn into a very sweet sine oscillator

Thanks for watching and have a nice day!

ARA-Serpens Modular/Anima and Altar Filter -Ritual Electronics

Dziam Bass

"Hello all.
The last two modules I have opened are the new ARA- sequential switch from Serpens Modular and Anima from Ritual Electronics.
I recorded a small patch with these modules when ARA is as a sequencer and Anima has dual digital VCO and EG and LFO, but I only used one VCO and the other I used envelope.
from another module I added lfo for decay and curves changes so from time to time they change in motion. I added Altar filter also from Ritual which adds character to Anima.
I added Drums from Pico Drums triggered via Pico TRIGG from Erica Synths.
I recommend checking these Serpens and Ritual modules because they give you a lot of possibilities and have great performance.
for me it is a lot of fun but also a lot of possibilities which I discover every time I exceed my thoughts on this module and come out great new sounds and sequences which normally I would not put together without the input of these modules when they go further than I can consciously do.
Thanks for ur time and watching and have a GREAT MODULAR day."

Altar filter-Ritual Electronics strong sounding filter two examples

Published on May 7, 2020 Dziam Bass

"Hi Everybody!
In this video I have some filtering with the Altar filter from Ritual Electronics
I also added the Dual LFO from nakedboards for modulation and in first exmple add Euro DDL delay from Eventide. but I wanted mainly show strong sound from this filter.
Altar is a voltage controlled 3-pole, 18dB / octave state variable filter.
so know it is really cool to use it. Altar also has a CV color thanks to which it has a different filter character and built-in attenuverter to reverse the modulation. in the second example I also used attenuverter.
it's best to just see what this filter can do in this demo.
Thanks for watching.. "

Ritual Electronics Altar SVF & Miasma Distortion Eurorack Modules

Published on Jun 28, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"We just started carrying Ritual Electronics modules and we made this bass sound with their Altar state variable filter and Miasma distortion. The Altar is a unique state variable filter in that it is an 18db/octave filter where most SVF filters are only 12db/octave. The Altar has continuously variable filter types and an input gain circuit that can overdrive the filter core for tons of dirty filter sounds.

The Miasma is a distortion with built in feedback routing that can lead to screaming self oscillation. When the Crime expander module is added to the Miasma you can use the rotary switches to select different combinations of diodes for different distortion types.

The drums in this video came from the Befaco Kickall and the WMD Crucible.

Ritual Electronics Altar // State variable Eurorack filter with lots of CV control

Published on Feb 13, 2019 DivKidVideo

"**TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW** I was pleased to see Ritual Electronics announce Altar after first enjoying Miasma and working with them on that demo (link below). Altar is a state variable filter that rather than switching between low, band and high pass modes allows you to vary and blend between them both with the knob AND with CV control. That's a fairly unique feature as you rarely see CV controlled filter types/states on modules. There's also CV over cut off frequency and resonance all with attenuverters and a second cut off control with the 1v/oct input. Finally there's a nice asymmetrically clipping gain stage on the input to push things that bit harder for filter burn and a bit of saturation.

Ritual Electronics - Miasma (distortion, feedback, thickener & bonkers!)

Published on Jul 27, 2018 DivKidVideo

Note there is a Halcyon Miasma as well. This is the first Ritual Electronics post on the site.

"TIMING INDEX BELOW! Here's the new Miasma from Ritual Electronics in Paris, France. It's a distortion and feedback device with a tonne of character from warm and clipped/compressed channel strip in vibe to all out chaos and screaming oscillation. There's a blend for parallel dry/wet processing, gain with CV input and attenuverter and feedback with CV input and attenuverter. You also get a feedback out and in so you can filter/effect and process the feedback path for more creative sound design. There's one rectification diode for the positive part of the wave and another for the negative and you can swap this out with no tools right on the back side of the module. So changing diodes/LEDs for different symmetrical or asymmetrical clipping is good fun too as you can change the whole flavour of the thing. It will do more subtle drive, but as soon as rectification kicks in and kind of snatches at your waves your into driven nasty town ... and it's lovely!

http://ritualelectronics.com

TIMING INDEX & LINKS

00:00 hello and previews of what's to come

01:02 Feature & control run down

01:59 303 style acid line - total destruction (when you want it) a big exploration of tones/colours and controls.

04:27 Processing drums - parallel mixing, channel strip style "colour" and intense saturation & noise.

06:48 Further examples - this is a Korg Volca Sample with chord hits, drums and synth hits.

08:12 Processing oscillator waves - using a triangle wave we take a look and listen to the waveshaping distortion and feedback.

10:21 Swapping out the components - how does the sound change and how do you do it?

12:23 Exploring and processing the feedback loop - first using the Make Noise & Soundhack Erbe Verb in the feedback loop.

13:55 Filters in the feedback loop - using the Joranalogue Filter 8 to low pass filter the feedback path.

14:30 Looking at pre or post VCF/VCA processing as well as the CV inputs for dynamic and expressive saturation."

"Miasma is a voltage controlled distortion with a feedback loop you can push to self oscillation for insane results. and interchangeable rectification diodes. giving you an unlimited amount of sound possibilities within one module.

Miasma feedback path feeds the distorted signal back in the input with no phase inversion, causing the module to self oscillate, even with no input. The feedback path can be opened to send it through different effects making Miasma perfect for complex feedback patches.
A blend knob allows Miasma to be used in a precise way, for more complex sound design.
The module's clipping diodes are mounted on a header making it easy to swap them and craft the sound you want. There module ships with six different diodes, from germanium to LEDs and you can experiment adding your own. The output level may vary depending on which diodes you use, this can be adjusted with the level trimmer on the front"
