YAMAHA CS60 ANALOG POLYPHONIC SYNTHESIZER

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This listing is for a YAMAHA CS60 8voice analog polyphonic synthesizer in excellent cosmetic and working condition. The CS60 is built into its own case and comes with its original lid. The enamel surface of the front panel is in excellent shape but with approximately half a dozen small (pinhead size) flakes missing. There are several minor scuffs on the Tolex of the lid, but the surface is unbroken and intact. The original legs and vinyl carrying bag (both in excellent condition) are included. The Instruction manual, service manual, foot switch pedal and foot controller(expression pedal) are all included. This is a complete Yamaha CS60 with ALL the accessories!

The Yamaha CS60 8 voice analog poly synth is the smaller version of the all-time classic CS80. And even though it is somewhat "scaled down" compared to its legendary big brother, the CS60 is nevertheless one of the most expressive and intuitive synths ever made. It's basically one channel of the 2 channel CS80, and it still includes most of the key signature features that place Yamaha's polyphonic CS-series in a class of its own. "CS" stands for"control synthesizer" - and the real-time control on offer here is indeed nothing short of stunning: the aftertouch/pressure sensitivity of the keyboard is unrivaled even today and controls either VCO (LFO amount - vibrato), VCF (LFO amount - wah wah), VCF(filter frequency) or VCA (loudness), or all of the above at the same time!

Then there's Yamaha's famous PWM (pulse width modulation) and the fantastic ring modulator with the possibility of fading the dry and effect signal in and out, as well as processing external signals via the external input, two excellent filters, HPF and LPF in serial, both with their own resonance, a great sounding LFO with various waveforms (again including "external signal"), a brilliant portamento and glissando feature, a dual-concentric pitch bend and a massive ribbon controller for extreme pitch bending a la Vangelis' "Bladerunner" and, and, and...

Sonically, too, the CS60 covers a very similar territory, with many sounds nigh-on identical to its larger cousin, while being a lot more reliable and easier to service. Last but not least, with CS80prices going through the roof, the CS60 can still be had for a fraction of the price. 8 discreet voices of vintage analog technology and all the real time control you could ask for - the YAMAHA CS60 is a very desirable and highly inspirational musical instrument with tons of character.

All keys, knobs, sliders and buttons work perfectly, move smoothly and do exactly what they're supposed to do. The same goes for the keyboard aftertouch/pressure sensitivity and all other functions. TheCS60 is perfectly in tune and remains very stable. The ribbon controller is practically pristine: no signs of wear or tear, the felt is still raised and it tracks perfectly along the entire range.

The CS60 is large and heavy, it weighs over 100 pounds, I estimate shipping to be approximately $300-$350 to anywhere in the 48 continental United States..."

YAMAHA CS60 For Sale

"A very rare opportunity to own a fully working Yamaha CS60. More portable than the CS80 and more expressive than the CS50, the CS60 is the ideal way to get those amazing Blade Runner/Chariots of Fire sounds which Vangelis created on the CS80. Other CS80 fans include Eddie Jobson who created fantastic layered textures and leads for "UK" and other bands, and Klaus Schulze.

The CS60 is eight-note polyphonic, fully analogue with variable resonance filters and has a velocity and aftertouch sensitive keyboard. Aftertouch can bring in vibrato, tremolo and filter opening just like on the CS80. Also as on the CS80, the CS60 has a fantastic voltage controlled ring modulator which creates huge clanging bell-like and metallic sounds - these are all over the 'Blade Runner' soundtrack and the music of Klaus Schulze - and a pitch strip which bends notes down to the sub-audio region..."

Yamaha CS60 Vintage Analog Synth

Some pics of the inside below.

"The CS series sounds amazing and very different from other vintage synths—certainly the greatest Japanese analog poly synths of all time. Even though its brother the CS80 is more highly prized, the CS60 has the same voice and packs nearly all the same functions in a big but not huge package.

This CS60 is in excellent+ condition inside and out. All functions were recently tested and everything checks out: all knobs work and sound incredible including the ribbon-controller, ring modulator and aftertouch.

There is a knick in the wood on the back panel about 1/8" and a few small scuffs to the tolex, but overall superb condition for it's age. This CS60 hasn't been moved much and has had a pampered life in a studio. Comes with cover and original Yamaha dust cloth. No legs. Weighs 46kg (102 lbs). Original US 3-prong cord(120v)."

Yamaha SY-2

Click here for shots via this auction.

Check out the details. They claim the SY-2 is the only alternative that has the GX-1 filters. The GX-1 was as you know, the predecessor to the mighty CS80. I was under the impression the CS80 and CS60 had the same filters as the GX-1. The auction details do mention the CS60, so the seller is clearly aware of the CS60. Can anyone out there confirm if the filters on the CS60, CS80, GX1 and SY-2 are different or the same? Note the SY-2 was Yamaha's first synth according to the auction details pulled for this post.

Click the image to see the presets. Anyone know what Hawaiian Guitar sounds like? Considering the Wersi Bass Synth had a Hawaii Effect that you can see in the video in this previous post, I'm guessing Hawaii was in during the 70s. If so it's interesting how the popular culture at the time makes it's way into the design aspects of a given synth. Groovebox anyone? That is over isn't it?

Details:
"This is the only alternative to gets the classic GX-1 filters without paying 50000$. I'm telling you, you'll never heard something like that. The sound is unique, personnal and organic. It looks like a preset synth, but it's definately not! Think of the presets as your waveforms...

Here's some specs :
- 28 'presets'
- 37 keys keyboard with aftertouch (VERY sensible and expressive, exactly like a CS-60, I did the A-B test because I own one...)
- 1 VCO (It seems that one some preset, there's a second sine VCO after the VCF, as you find on a CS-60 and CS-80)
- 2 analog resonant filters, 1 LPF and 1 HPF
- 1 VCA envelope ADSR
- 1 VCF envelope (called 'Tone Bend' on this synth) ADS Written ATTACK TIME, INTENSITY and DECAY TIME, this envelope is inverted on some presets
- Pulse width
- Portamento
- 4 Octave transposition
- Vibrato control(LFO) : Speed and Depth
- Foot controller assignments : VCF (Wahwah) and Volume
- Aftertouch assignements : Vib Depth, VCF (Wah-wah) and Volume.
- Sensitivity knobs for aftertouch and Pedal"

"Hello,up for auction is a Vintage Yamaha CS60 Synthesizer. This synth works fine , sounds excellent and is in great condition with normal wear for it's age. The legs and foot controller are not included.

This belongs to the business partner of the late Tim Smith who was the Western Regional Tech Rep for Sequential Circuits , Arp, Moog also contributing to the famous Vintage Synthesizers book and articles in Keyboard Magazine. Tim was an expert at repairing all kinds of synthesizers and electronics and over the years amassed quite a bit of stuff. Most of his collection has disappeared except for a few items I've come across that will be available for sale this week."

"Unbelievable original 1970s Yamaha CS60 Synth in truly stunning original condition. This is one of the nicest I have ever seen for sale. I have owned a few of these, and this is by far the nicest. It really is a synth of legends! It is in full working order, and we have videos of it working for anyone interested. Comes complete with the original stands and even the original pedal. I have not seen another with this sort of originality before. Cosmetically in stunning condition. This really would be an amazing addition to any studio or collection. It was originally purchased from Music Ground in the 1970s, as you can see, prior to them losing their way. They clearly sold incredible gear! You'll not be disappointed. Please check out the pictures below as they form part of our description."

"Unbelievable original 1970s Yamaha CS60 Synth. This was imported into the UK very early on in their production and was only the second one in the UK. It was imported by Mark Stevens of Mankind, who famously used this on Top of the Pops in 1978 to play Dr. Who. He can be seen playing this exact synth on their recording that day. It has been in his possession ever since and we recently had the opportunity to purchase this off of the friend who received it upon his death. It really is a synth of legends! It is in full working order, and we have videos of it working for anyone interested. When we received it it was quite dirty so we've given it a wipe down but have left the tape on the front for provenance. The exterior case is good condition with a few marks throughout. This really would be an amazing addition to any studio or collection."

YAMAHA CS-50

via this auction

Note the CS50 does not have the ribbon controller or preset patch panel of the CS60. The synth engine of the CS50 and CS60 is half a CS80. A CS80 allows you to layer the two engines or rather two patches. Here's a funny analogy that may be blasphemy to some. It's similar to the Roland GAiA. :) With the GAiA you layer four synth engines, with the CS80 you layer two. See this post for some pics for the following: If you look at the patch selections there are two rows. You select one patch from each. If you look at the panel there are two rows, you edit the upper patch selected with the top row and the bottom with the bottom. If you look at the user patch panel you will see four rows equating four user presets that can be saved, the first two can be selected in the top row of patch buttons, and the bottom two on the bottom (see this pic). Note you aren't saving presets to any memory, you literally set each slider and leave it where you want. If you look at the CS50 and a CS60 you will see they consist of one row or engine of the CS80s two. The CS60 adds mono aftertouch, the preset patch panel, and the ribbon controller. The CS80 adds the second synth engine and poly aftertouch. Note there is a mod that allows you to layer a single patch on the CS60 and I'm assuming CS50 to go from an 8 voice single patch to a 4 voice layered patch. If anyone has more info on this mod, let me know. [Difference between the CS50, CS60 and CS80]

Yamaha CS60 Polyphonic Synthesizer

"This Yamaha CS 60 is in perfect functional condition and comes complete with the travel case lid, an original stand and Yamaha carrying bag for the stand. The tolex is in nice shape with no evidence of brittleness or flaking common with 35 year old synths. The buckles, clasps, and edge protectors are still shiny as is the stand with no evidence of rust or pitting. All knobs and slider pots are static free and slide very freely. The ribbon controller is perfect- no bumpiness or ruptured springs underneath. The aftertouch is extremely responsive just like it was in 1977. Many CS 60/80s that are sold without stands have bottom damage to the tolex and grates. The bottom of this unit is in great shape as evidenced by the photo. Many CS 60s were organ donors for the older brother, the CS 80. This is not the case with this synth. It was very well cared for and maintained and is is perfect tune. It was never gigged. Consequently, it does not suffer from road rash...

Polyphony- 8 voices
61 pressure sensitive keys
Oscillators- 1 per voice with saw, sine, and PWM and white noise wave sources. The Pulse wave has its own LFO for speed control
VCF- has LP and HP filters with AADSR envelope control and depth control
VCA- has AADSR envelope control and volume level control
LFO- sine, square, noise, saw, and inv saw waveshapes
Ribbon controller- one octave up and goes sub audio on way down
Aftertouch control- OSC, VCF, VCA, depth
Ring Modulator- depth, speed, attack, delay
Separate resonance and brilliance control for each preset and lower and higher octaves on keyboard
Transpose- two octaves up , two down
13 presets/ 1 user
Portamento, Glissando, and Sustain control
Gross and Fine tune control( all voices)

Yamaha CS60

"The CS60 is an 8-voice analog polysynth, and is a scaled-down version of the mighty CS80. Each voice is a single VCO with a sub-oscillator, and a resonant LP/HP filter with its own ADSR envelope. There are 12 presets, and one user program. A ribbon controller for pitch mods, assignable aftertouch from the keys, and a ring modulator are great features of this 61-note synth.

This particular CS60 is being sold on behalf of John 'King Gizmo' King of the Dust Brothers, and is in very nice condition and fully functional. The Syntaur team did some minor repairs, and rebuilt the ribbon controller. The lid, the legs, and the legs carrying case are all included. Because of the size, weight, and value of this instrument, it is being offered for local pickup only. (Or we can possibly arrange for in-person delivery.)"

Yamaha CS-60 8-Voice Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Fully functional Yamaha CS60 synth. It has just been fully serviced by Retrolinear in the Philadelphia area. Retrolinear knows CS60s very well - they routinely service them for clients, including a few touring musicians who are still using them (Page McConnell of Phish being one of his clients). I have attached the invoice showing details of the work.

Functionally - Every slider, switch, the ribbon controller, and especially important, the aftertouch all work flawlessly. All voices function and are in tune.

Cosmetically - My CS60 is in excellent shape. The silkscreen is near perfect and the entire control panel has only like 2 very small chips and one scrape mark from a fader cap digging into the panel (pictured). The two chips are just above the keybed so don't take away from the cleanliness of the control panel (one is pictured). The tolex on the case is original and in very good condition - again, excellent considering its age.

Overall - This synth was never abused. It spent most of its life in the home of a musician - it was never toured.

The original tolexed hard cover and removable music stand are included - the stand attaches to the inside of the lid. I do not have the original legs. The CS-60 gets you most of the CS-80 sound at a fraction of the cost. The aftertouch truly adds to the expressiveness of the synth."

"The most expressive and fun to play synth I’ve ever laid hands on, the Yamaha CS60. You know what this is if you’ve come this far. This one is in stellar condition. Was serviced a few years ago and everything is fully functional. Everything feels like new when playing it. I had previously bought a Deckards dream and Hydrasynth thinking it may be a more modern version of this and the keys, ribbon, integration and connection to the sound production and especially the sonic depth and intricacy all were not even close. It’s literally the difference between an LED and a candle. This thing glows and warms."

Yamaha CS60 1977 Vintage Analog Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Yamaha CS-60 Rare 1977 Vintage Analog Synthesizer.

This is the most amazing synthesizer I’ve ever had and I hate to have to get rid of it.

This instrument is in really good condition due to the maintenance I’ve done to it over the years which Is

I Completely rebuilt the power supply and replaced every electrolytic capacitor in the instrument along with many other capacitor types which is close to 1000 capacitors. Also, I replaced all the CMOS chips and started replacing some of the voice card potentiometers. I documented all of the restoration done to the instrument and will give you that pictures and information, if you like.

There are a few things I haven’t got around to yet which are replace the pitch ribbon spring:100-200$ cost.

Replace IG 151 LFO chip for the ring modulator: 75-150$ cost and: replace the rest of the scratchy potentiometers on the voice boards 50-150$ cost but, the instrument works fine. The Only problem I ever have is it occasionally gets some static from a few bad potentiometers but after it warms up it’a fine.

Here is videos of made with the instrument." [posted here]
