Todd Barton Transmissions II
at The Dance Space in Ashland, OR

"Saturday, October 17 8pm.

Studio A.B and Control Voltage Therapy present an evening of multimedia / interdisciplinary performance by Todd Barton and Bruce Bayard, with special guests Lawson Inada, Damon Honeycutt, and Christine Williams. Buchla Music Easels, video projections, movement, poetry, and voice come together in a creative melting pot. Each artist brings their own responses to a single abstract concept, that of the conveyance of ideas and information. They then create the evening's performance in the moment without rehearsal or prepared script beyond general agreement of sections relating to emphasis on word, movement, imagery or all at once. The collaboration produces an intriguing, surprising concordance.

Left to right: Todd Barton, Bruce Bayard, Damon Honeycutt, Lawson Indada, Christine Williams.

Lawson served as Poet Laureate of Oregon and has won numerous book awards including the Oregon Book Award, and the American Book award. Damon is currently pursuing an MFA in Music Composition at The Vermont College of Fine Arts. He has traveled extensively worldwide and has preformed with Pilobolus Dance Company. Christine is a classically trained singer and actor, and has performed at Barbican Centre in London, the Growtowski Institute in Poland, and eight seasons at OSF. She is currently developing her own form of solo music theatre. Todd was composer at Oregon Shakespeare Festival for over forty years and is now creative consultant to Buchla Electronic Music Instruments. Bruce is a self-taught visual artist and video designer. Together, Todd and Bruce form the music performance duo Control Voltage Therapy.

Todd Barton Live with Buchla - Saturday, Nov. 3 Ashland, OR

one oscillator improv from todd barton on Vimeo.

"Dear Friends,

This Saturday, Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. at the DanceSpace 280 East Hersey Street in Ashland, Oregon I will be performing a solo analog synthesizer concert on a Buchla Electric Music Box.

I’ll be creating sounds from various tone generating modules then folding, unfolding, sculpting, twisting, caressing and distorting them into one long, free-wheeling improvisation.

And my pal, digital artist Bruce Bayard will be unfolding a collage of video images gathered from this past week. Hope you can join us.

Another way of looking at this sonic experience is that I will be creating an new electronic musical instrument which I will listen to and quickly learn its charaterictics/personality in order to learn to play it. I will then perform this new instrument and record it onto a track of my looper pedal at which point I will connect different modules together to create yet another new instrument, learn it, perform it, loop it . . . and so the process continues. . .

Like folding a square piece of paper into unusual and surprising shapes, think of this evening as sonic origami. Hope to see you there! All best wishes, Todd

Here’s a very rough sample of this process [embed above]

Here's more information:
First Saturday Concert Series

TBA stands for Time-Based Art, or To Be Announced. With the first series complete, Todd and I are now moving into the next phase of monthly concert presentations. These performances will consist of various experiments in the audio and visual world. The next First Saturday concert is November 3, 8pm at the DanceSpace in Ashland. Todd Barton will compose an electronic score in the moment, using the Buchla synthesizer with a setting (patch) that creates a wonderfully expressive sound. I am putting together some video clips that I hope will find some resonant synchronization with Todd's music.

Tickets are $5 at the door.

Buchla Video Tutorials by Todd Barton

00 Buchla Mind Introduction from todd barton on Vimeo.

You can find the full set of 26 videos in this series on Vimeo here.  Per Todd Barton:

"These instructional videos were created for a course I co-taught with Prof. Robert Coburn this past autumn (2015) at the University of the Pacific. The focus is on the main Buchla 200 series modules in their system housed at the new Analog/Digital Studio.

Though the focus is on the older Buchla 200 modules almost all of the information, tips & tricks are applicable to the newer 200e series. I will be adding more 200e tutorials to this collection in the coming months.

My deep thanks to Prof. Coburn and the enthusiastic and talented students of this first class: http://www.analogital19.com

Also a big thank you to my friend and colleague, Bruce Bayard, who patiently taped and editied this entire video series. http://brucebayard.com/

'The videos have been great! I've gone through them all and will continue to review them for quite a while I am sure.'

Schneider Concert Featuring Todd Barton, Bruce Bayard & Michael Vannice

via MATRIXSYNTH Member, Todd Barton:

"Dear Friends,

Please join us: Friday, July 24 at Noon. Free and open to the public.

Our special guest is Michael Vannice, whose playing is influenced by experimental music, free jazz, and avant-garde classical music. He will be playing a Eurorack modular synthesis system with a WX-5 wind controller. Todd and I [Bruce Bayard] will both be playing Buchla Electronic Easels.

While this music is electronic in nature, it is not computer music. The instruments are analog synthesizers, and in the case of the two Easels, each has a hard-wired circuit board designed by Todd that creates a very expressive setting we use as our starting point. It allows us to modulate the sound with touch, and it also adds random elements into the mix. It becomes a very interactive process between musician and instrument. In a similar way, Michael uses a wind controller to trigger and modify sound events through breath.

The spacial and acoustical characteristics of the Schneider Museum make for a unique listening experience. A speaker is placed in each of the four galleries, and sound can be directed to each discreetly. In this way, space plays a huge compositional role in the creation of the music.

hope to see you there!!

all best wishes, Todd"

Todd Barton and Bruce Bayard Easel Duet at Schneider Museum, SOU Ashaland

Pic in via Brian Comnes

"Todd Barton and Bruce Bayard Easel Duet at Schneider Museum, SOU Ashaland. Bruce's Easel is actually a Russian Clone [I'm guessing it is a Roman Filippov Easel clone]. And the bigger Buchla to the right of Todd was used mostly for spatial movement in a quadrophonic set up. They will do this every month here for the next few months."

The performances happen the first Friday of the month. You'll find details posted here.

Todd Barton Butoh for Easels

via Todd Barton

"I'm proud to announce the premiere performance of my new piece, Butoh for Easels. On Friday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. at the Schneider Museum of Art on the campus of Southern Oregon University I will be joined by three amazing synthesists: Bruce Bayard, Eden Mononym and Adam Scramstad to perform this piece for 4 Buchla Music Easels (analog synthesizers) in quadraphonic sound space. This is part of our ongoing series: Quadraphonic: Space and Metaphor Not since the 1970’s group, The Electric Weasel Ensemble spearheaded by Don Buchla and Allen Strange, have this many Music Easels been seen and heard in a single performance space. This new composition was created for the reverberant acoustic of the Schneider Museum coupled with a quadraphonic surround-sound system. This will be a unique sonic experience! I know many of you on this list are from out of town and won't be able to be here, but I hope to have good video and audio of the performance available. If you are in town I encourage you to make it -- there is nothing like quadraphonic sound LIVE! Also, there will be exciting solo performances by Eden, Bruce and Adam!

all best wishes,
Todd"
