Prophet-10 Jam I

video upload by verstaerker

"i got my Prophet-10 and so i started jamming around. As i have no intention to make traditional sounds with it i came up with this techno-jam wich started with this super-fat unison-detuned-lead sound.
The other elements of the track or done on the Syntakt, the polivoks.pro and the Macbeth Elements.
Sequencing was done on the Syntakt and Hapax."

Published on May 20, 2020 Caspar Hesselager

"The Macbeth Elements EL2 is sequenced by a Moon Modular 569 quad sequencer. Three sequence rows go to the invidual CV ins of the three oscillators and a fourth row (set to random with some gates turned off) goes to GATE in.
Output into T-rex Replicator analog tape delay into Eventide Space pedal.

Recorded to one stereo track.

"Amazing analog synth!! I bought this brand new direct from Ken Macbeth in 2019. I have listed it as excellent because it is practically new and has hardly been used. However, there is one very important issue I want to point out. The high Eb on the sensor type keyboard is intermittent. When I receive this EL2 from Ken, that sensor did not work. Then it started working one day, and then stopped again. All the other sensors function 100%. It's just that high Eb. I contacted Ken, and he said he would happily fix it if I sent it back to him. However, I decided to just keep it as is since I mostly played it through CV anyway and I didn't want to deal with shipping to Scotland after waiting for this synth to be built. Absolutely every other function is 100% and the synth is amazing. I would assume Ken would still fix this if you want it fixed. I just personally don't think it's worth it since you can control this synth more expressively through external CV. 3 of these sold on Reverb used for $6,000. I'm asking $5,500 or best offer due to the one sensor which I think is a fair deal."

"This last unit available bought directly from Ken Macbeth in November 2019 from private collection.

Description of synth from Sneiders Laden:
... the Black Elements features a classical, subtractive signal flow. A closer look then reveals some cool oddities like unconventional filter slopes, extensively equipped modulators, a band echo simulation and a spring reverb. The Elements EL-2 features a completely discrete circuit design. Its sound is creamy and fat at the same time. Thanks to NOS components, the instrument has a nice vintage vibe. Compared to its predecessor, the EL-2 offers some very useful additions. – Especially its three oscillators have been extended considerably.

The outstanding synth has 3 VCOs, a tape echo simulator, a filter/resonator combination, a spring reverb, and really large modulation potentiomenters. Also the sound is huge but what really stands out (optically) is the golden touch keyboard with quick response.
The Elements has a CV and gate input socklet pair, several CV inputs, e.g. for separate VCO control, filter cutoff and for the VCA. A spring reverb line in/out socket is installed as well.

EL2 Changes listed below.

MACBETH M5 Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer

"This is the Original M5 with the black & orange colour scheme, as used for the later version ARP 2600.

Note that whilst it looks like a later model Rev.3 ARP2600, the M5's sound is both Moog and Oberheim inspired.

[Update: note the lawsuit mentioned below never happened. There was contention over the filter but it never got to that.  via Wikipedia: "Early versions contained an imitation of Robert Moog's 4-pole 'ladder' VCF, later the subject of a threatened (though ultimately nonexistent) lawsuit"Also the epoxy covered modules were likely more for performance reasons. Not sure if it was to stabilize temperature and to isolate the modules. See the comments at the bottom of this post for more.]

The original ARP 2600 (Blue Meanie model) that many/most claim sounds best of the 2600's, stole the Moog filter design of course, hence epoxy sealed units, lawsuit, 4072 ARP filter redesign, etc... Plus, the M5 actually dwarfs the 2600 in overall height + size. This M5 is one of around 90 (I think) of the original versions that were hand made between 2005/6, so only 14-15 years old compared with over 40 for a 2600.

It has great build quality courtesy of Ken McBeth. No tiny slider tops or mini jack sockets to fiddle with... On a practical note you can get multiple (man sized) finger tips between the slider tops for patching/mixing/modulation purposes. A joy to play with as you can easily see all patch points, sources, destinations, signal flow, etc.

As regards stability & tuning, many older analogue synths had & still do have problems with these factors. This M5 tunes very accurately and holds tune throughout every session, nor is this dependent on whether it's hot or not - inside or out, as was the downside of many old analogue synths, though it's appreciated some do like such instability... I prefer to start off with known stability & increase detuning/instability if/when needed. There is even a stability pot on Osc#3 for dialing in that effect when required, except it's under your control and not at the mercy of other elements...

IMO the M5 is sonically much more powerful and versatile than the 2600, based on the dual filter type design alone.

MacBeth Elements 2 - rare black, only 30 made

"A rare opportunity is here

My knee surgeon did not want to be paid in gear, so ...

Here is a MacBeth Elements 2. One of only about 30 made in the black and gold styling.

For those of you that know, this is one of those special synths that sound unlike anything else on the planet.

For those of you that don't know, here's a quick feature rundown:
3 VCOs, a voltage-controlled LFO that can track and function as a 4th oscillator, Low pass filter that can be switched between 2 and 4 pole responses, two ADSR envelopes, extensive modulation section plus Ring Mod, Noise, and an external input, Spring reverb and vintage-sounding delay with feedback and modulation. A beautiful 37 note touch keyboard.

When Ken came up with the Elements 2 as a successor to the original silver Elements, he took the opportunity to add some often requested features. So, new to the Elements 2 is an additional sync switch that allows you to sync VCO 3 to VCO 2 (there already is a sync 2 to 1 switch), separate Enhance control for VCO 2 (kind of like a dedicated PWM for the square wave, but the Elements 2 has 2 of them instead of just one) so you can modulate the pulse width without tieing up the LFO.

Around the back is a huge bonus - separate outputs for the VCOs. If you've ever tried to change the pitch of a VCO in the middle of a complicated patch with lots of filtering, modulation, and effects, you know how challenging that can be at times. With the separate outs, simply run a cable from the VCO you need to a tuner and Bam!, you're done in seconds without having to tear down your patch."
