M-Z3R0 - DYSTOPIAN - circuit bent beat and drone sequencer

YouTube via manufacturedZ3R0
"This is a hinghon keyboard paired up with a casio VL1. The hinghon is hooked up to a sequencer which can be used to set 8 step patterns using the rotary selectors to assign different drums to each step. It has overdrive and pitch control. The driver for the sequencer also runs an LFO (lfo1) which can be routed to both the hinghon and the vl1. Good for syncing up the leads sounds from the vl to thew drum sequencer. There is a second lfo routed to the vl1 which allows you to set it's pitch modulation to free run. The sequencer driver also connects to a drone switch which when activated will switch on a note repeat on the hinghon. The vl 1 also has it's own pitch, lfo depth and drone distortion controls."

"Modifications, circuit bends and embedded circuitry:

Analogue resonant filter with high pass and low pass bands
Gain, resonance, low pass/high pass toggle and cutoff
A nice warm filter based on the synthacon.
Lot's of resonance and a unique character of it's own.

Digital 'death industrial' delay
Rate, noise, feedback, off/on toggle
This delay variant is based on the formula applied and the output of circuit bent delay pedals which have been sold in the past.
A versatile and if desired aggressive set up that can drift between ambience, echo and all out harsh noise wall and power electronics.

PSU - DC hum suppression circuitry
A regulated psu is now built into the machine.
This gives a stable and quiet power supply to both the keyboard and additional circuitry as well as
providing a quiet output and excellent noise floor.
Input voltage has been converted to 12V tip positive.

Control voltage input to filter cutoff
3.5mm socket. Allows you to hook the casio up to your cv enabled equipment to modulate the filter.
An example of this is shown in the first demo video.
The cv modulation is provided by a sequential circuits pro1 which is driven by one of my modified midi retrofitted DD7 drum machines.

Drone dostortion, drum boost and lofi keys raw bends
Three of four selected raw bends.
Drone distortion is a variable mod that acts as both a drone oscillator and a means to distort and shame both the keyboard and
percussive sounds of the pt-87.
Lofi keys knocks the edge off of the key sounds and brings them down to the preset percussion level, if you wish to record
phrases using both aspects. It stops the keyboards sounds which are inherently louder than the percussion from over powering the percussion,
Drum boost over drives the drum channel and turns the quaint casiotone percussive elements into much heavier
analogue drum and percussion sounds which work well with the added resonant filtering.

Master pitch control
The final raw circuit bend,
Gives a large global pitch range - demonstrated in the demo videos

Cnc machined aluminium panel work with black anodize and engraving

A compact keyboard giving access to a huge range of conventional synthesizer sounds through to harsh noise wall and power electronics.

The PT-87 is a mid sized 80's casio keyboard which bares a lot of resembelance to the classic VL tone.
The drum sounds and key tones can be shaped into squelchy analogue percussion and deep analogue wave forms which
take on the sound of vintage synths of the same era as they're passed through the resonant filter.
The effects chain opens up a glitch element which would otherwise be unavailable on the PT range of keyboards and
gives access to abstracts progression, data crash glitching, harsh noise wall and power electronics."

X1L3 - Circuit bent - Synth mod - Casio PT82 / PT87

"Back to where it all started.

No eye candy or wooden ends etc. I wanted substance over superficiality. As much as i enjoyed doing the larger machines and will probably do more when i think i've something signifigant to add again (like midi / adsr etc) i started to feel that the curious aspect of these little instruments that sparked my interest was getting lost in some kind of pseudo synthesizer territory to the point where i might as well have just moved on to total synth diy and ditched working on these little things. I've taken what i've learned along the way and what i can do now, miniaturised it all for purpose and put it to work with the fundamentals of the circuit bending that bought me to where i am and what i can do now. The charm and fun of a bespoke circuit bent keyboard but with a sound that stretches from vanilla to hell.

I wanted a compact machine which made space very limited. So i opted to ditch all the drum mute/distortion bends and keep just the pitch control bend which is so easily applied to these. Grunge bossa nova and disco get old fast. I wanted this to be something you could sample the hell out of for trashed up noise and quirky analogue hits and sounds. It's heart revolves around additional circuitry. An embedded psu/supressor to power the keyboard, filter and delay efficiently and of course the filter and delay themselves. It also has a CV input around the side that allows you to modulate the filter cutoff via other equipment. In this case a sequential circuits Pro 1 with note sequences programmed to send out cv patterns.

The intro to this video was made using samples from this machine and the sampler/fx processing of propellerheads reason. Probably most apparent as the intro peaks with the delay crash.

I think i've got it right and i think this is something different and diverse within the realm. But i suppose like most things it's a matter of taste as to if you like this particular flavour or not :)"

X1L3 - Circuit bent - synth mod - Yamaha PSS130

Published on May 15, 2013 manufacturedZ3R0·91 videos

"Demonic and dark. Or just shoegaze and noise? As with most of my machines it's geared up to do a bit of everything in the noise realm. Glitching with the delay, atmospheres, being a basic retro analogue synth, an external input for feeding what ever you like into the fx chain (shown nicely with an awful cassette i picked up at a car boot sale played backwards from a four track at 20.00 onward) Showing a bit of what it can do in a few takes. Some melodic, some just delving into dischord. Just demo of how strange it can sound when the different oscillator sources are mixed and the lfo's are routed to various combinations of destinations. It reminds me a lot in eclectic sound and the way it behaves of a modular synth. Except obviously it's hard wired. The delay is noisy at slow rates but as with most pt2399 based digital delays it fattens up and sounds warm at higher speeds. The plus side being it works as a cool glitch generator as well as a warm echo. Skip to 20 minutes in for an improv death industrial/quake 1 flavoured set.

I'm taking on commissions again now so if you want one pm me and i'll get back to you."

Filter, delay and distortion with an LFO.

Trying it out on some percussion to good effect. Reminds me a lot of the kind of sound you get out of the ohmboyz ohmicide plugin :)

Made with a mix of thru hole and smd pcbs of my own design. A lot of potential inside a small box.

More vids to follow with some other gear and both inputs putting it to the test.."

It's been upgraded since part one with some processor glitching and a drone switch.

Not quite a s pleasant to listen to as i just wanted to mess with the lfo and delay in the harsher side of what it can do.

I guess you'll either understand or you won't ;)"

X1L3 - circuit bent - synth mod - Yamaha SH-10 keytar

Published on Jul 31, 2013 manufacturedZ3R0·100 videos

X1L3 on eBay (RSS)

"Nice set of mods on a Keytar sent to me for a commission make over.

The filter cutoff is located on the neck for playability. Because i couldn't see what i was filming i just guessed where to stand and it ends up out of shot for a lot of the video.
The video starts out with the keytar played over the top of a backing track. The track is a remake of an old commodore 64 game sound track by Rob Hubbard. Always loved the tune and thought it would be fun to do something with it as a demo of a modified instrument.
After the Hubbard tune finishes it's into the noise of cataclysm, with some delay washes, drone, death industrial style noise and glitching.
Rather than apply as many unplayable circuit bends as possible i looked around for the few that don't brick the machine and force you to switch it off and leave it playable when deactivated. Less is more as it were. I then added a drone switch, master pitch control and two additional fx circuits. The synthacon resonant filter and a digital delay."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent 'NOTHINGSTAR' synthesizer

via this auction

"Fitted with pitch control, distortion, M-Z3R0 death industrial delay circuit with filter, rate and feedback controls, pitch LFO with rate and depth control and atari punk console square wave oscillator.

Modified to the extreme, this beast can kick out an unlimited amount of glitching, noise and mayhem.

it has loads of internal sounds which can be mashed up with the embedded circuitry i've added as well as merged with the APC square wave for dual oscillator tones.

I've used one of these for some time to create hundreds of drum samples and bizarre incidental sounds.

This is a machine you'll have a lot of time for whenever you require something a bit crazy to drop into your tracks. You could pull off an entire power electronics set using this machine alone.

Don't be fooled by it's cute appearance. Make no mistake, these things are beasts :)"

X1L3 - Circuit bent Yamaha DD-10 - R2 - evolving glitch percussion

Published on Feb 4, 2017 manufacturedZ3R0

"Updated version of the circuit bent DD10.

Sequenced via MIDI from propellerhead reason.

It can also be synced to midi clock if you want to program patterns and run them internally.

Replacing the original distortion found in the older works with a 'ruiner' hybrid ring modulator / distortion which gives it greater command of and a more dynamic range within the bizzare. Under pinned with a Korg monopoly drone, microwave pad and sid chip arpeggio. Shifting form clean to increasingly damaged as the set runs.

Adhereing to a formula of creating machines that are capable of hitting extremes but at the same time maintaining a very high degree of control. Once mastered they're fluid and capable and unique instruments. Perfect for those with a liking for experimentation, blured boundaries and none linear workings.

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent yamaha pss-9

YouTube Uploaded by manufacturedZ3R0 on Dec 4, 2011
M-Z3R0 on eBay (RSS)

"Firstly, i have no idea why the video has uploaded twice!?
The full sequence is 20 minutes long not 41....

A superb machine for bizarre sounds and fx for sampling, along with wall noise, power electronics/death industrial drone, ambience or just sounding like an analogue synth.

As with most of my modified keyboards it has a very 'organic' and evolving feel to it. The potential for different sounds every time you pick this thing up is huge. The intro to this video, except for the drum samples was made entirely from samples taken from my own diy equipment and manipulated in sound forge and reason/record....

The audio of the footage is un-processed. What you hear is solely produced with the keyboard. Rough around the edges but when sampled or polished with some production elements can sound very interesting."

M-Z3R0 - Circuit bent - ULTRA PSS30

YouTube Uploaded by manufacturedZ3R0 on Dec 14, 2011
M-Z3R0 on eBay (RSS)

"Yamaha PSS30 built for mechanical cabaret (www dot mechanicalcabaret dot com)

Mods include:

PT2399 ;death industrial' delay circuit with rate, feedback and white noise filter

LTC1799 pitch mod with 555 square wave lfo

Low pass/high pass selectable resonant filter with gain, resonance and cutoff. The gain can be overdriven for some good filtered distortions on basses and cutoff modulation on drum patterns.

Thre damage control parameters (drone/overdrive/bit crusher))

Silent power supply: Filters out the 50/60hz hum associated with cheap wall wart mains adapters making for an excellent signal to noise ratio and a very smooth filter response.

I used the pss's in built sequencer to record the bassline on the first section of the video. It's simple but effective and can hold a suprising number of notes. Witht he pitch swept low the processor runs at a fraction of it's original speed meaning it can run for ages. It leaves free the two noto poliphony of the keyboard while playing the recorded line and also allows you to select a seperate sound to that being played by the sequencer."

X1L3 - circuit bent - synth mod - Roland TR 505

Published on May 22, 2013 manufacturedZ3R0·92 videos

"Cauldron born! Another dirge disco relic of the 80's risen from it's grave to do what it does best in the hell of the living. Juicy analogue filter mods on a retro 80's machine. Even if the glitch switches weren't fitted it would still sound good. The filter/delay combination i favour works nicely with drum machines and the tr505 is a fine example.

Upon completion the psu pcb had a few free terminals left so i decided to liven up under the front panel with a series of leds that shift through the RGB spectrum. So i guess as well as a nice drum machine it's also a moody lamp in a dark place for when you just want to lay back and and drift for a while."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent - ULTRA SA-8

YouTube Uploaded by manufacturedZ3R0 on Jan 2, 2012
M-Z3R0 on eBay (RSS)

"A circuit bent casio SA8 with many modifications:

Starting off with melody and a little lfo applied to the pads to good effect. Then degenerating into distorted rhythms, a few minutes of respite with some nice lfo pads and high feedback delay, then into an all out wall noise delay crash with a little lo-fi cover of a NIN number to finish off :)

K-Filter: fully analogue resonant low pass/high pass filter:
Gain.
Resosnance.
Cutoff.
HP/LP.
Lfo depth.

Death industrial crash delay:
Rate
White noise filter
Feedback

Damage control
(stock SA distortion and pseudo filter mods found on most modified casios)

Pitch modification

Lfo routed to filter cutoff and pitch

Deep crash

Dc hum elimination circuitry:
Silences the hum associated with cheap power packs. A necessity when using high gain circuits such as the resonant filter.

Altered to serve as a multi purpose synth/noise generator.

The video drags a little here and there. It was a hard machine to play a full bass/rhythm/melody style set on as unlike something like the pss30 it has no mini sequencer to record notes to jam to with. Ideally we'd have three hands for this kind of thing :)"

X1L3 - PERSUADATRON - FM radio eurorack module

Published on Mar 30, 2018 manufacturedZ3R0

"A simple demo following a dark power electronics theme. Using persuadatron to listen to a brain dead local radio station and pass it through clouds to generate the incidentals and background scene of the track.

Basically it's an FM radio with digtal controls. You can manually adjust the volume, station and mute it or you can trigger these with the gate inputs. It has an auto scan function which will scan it's entire frequency range and save all the stations it finds. Or if you prefer you can scan for them yourself.

The track is nothing more than the radio station fed into clouds and then manually manipulated with that modules controls. Made as an example of how cool a radio is for raw material more than anything else. The whole abysmal advertising breaks and template pop music package gets the treatment to awesome effect here. Backed by a drone and some strings."
