DSI End of '08 Update - LinnDrum Update and New MoPho OS

via Dave Smith Instruments:
"December 24 , 2008—Those of you who are paying attention (and we know there are at least a few of you…) may have noticed a relationship between how often the site gets updated and how busy we are. In fact, you might even be able to speculate when we’re getting ready to release a new product by the general lack of activity here. The absence of recent updates can mainly be attributed to the annual distraction of preparation for the NAMM show. We won’t be showing or announcing any new products this year (unless you count Mopho, which continues to fly out the door and is still backordered), but it takes a lot of work to get ready anyway. If you’re coming to the show, please stop by booth 6948 and say hello.

And, since we’re talking about NAMM and new products, you might ask, “What’s happening with the LinnDrum II?” Dave and Roger have been hard at work on the new design of LinnDrum II and now have a better idea of the ship date, which we currently estimate to be during the third quarter of 2009. We wish we could ship sooner but there's still a lot of work to do and it's important to us that we get it right. As a result, we don’t anticipate showing it—in any form—at the NAMM show. Thanks so much for your patience. We think it will be worth the wait.

In Mopho news, there is a new version of the OS that squashes a few annoying bugs. Go to the Current OS page for details. Also, the Mopho Pro editor is now available. Additional features include patch librarian functionality, program genetics, phantom banks, and automation for the sequencer section. We are also pleased to announce that Soundtower is working on VST and AU support with a projected release sometime in Q1 of 2009.

2008 has been action-packed, but fun. The Prophet ’08 received numerous honors and that is extremely gratifying. Mopho has already racked up a couple, as well (though only one we can talk about right now…). And Future Music has had the Prophet as the #1 recommended hardware synth on their gear chart for several months running. (Mopho just appeared in the latest issue at #4!)

Last, but not least, the ranks of DSI employees have swelled by an astonishing 33% in 2008. That’s right: there are four of us now. Chris Hector (AKA “the new guy” and “the young guy”) has joined us as Audio Engineer. Chris has already proved his worth by filling some significant “knowledge gaps” at DSI. Welcome, Chris!

Thanks to all the faithful for your continued support and to all of you who have more recently taken the DSI plunge. We literally couldn’t do it without you. We hope you have as much fun with our instruments as we have making them. All of us at Dave Smith Instruments wish you a happy, healthy, and peaceful 2009."

VCF Low-Pass Filter Shootout - Korg Minilogue, DSI Mopho, Korg DSS-1

Published on Jul 2, 2016 CarillonAudioVid

"I wanted to get a slightly more scientific view of how the filters are compare on my three hardware analog synths.

I ran my Korg DSS-1 through its own filter first, then through the filter in the Korg Minilogue and then the Dave Smith Mopho.

Just by looking at the 3 tracks you can see how they compare.

For each filter I did a sweep. Durin the first few seconds you see a screenshot of all the clips. No EQ or volume correction has been added. Clips 1-4 for each track are sweeps at 0% resonance, 50% resonance, 75% resonance, and 100% resonance of the 24dB filter. Clip 5-8 for each track are sweeps at 0% resonance, 50% resonance, 75% resonance, and 100% resonance of the 12dB filter. You can see how some filters make the signal quieter, while others make the signal louder.

0:07 is the raw sound
0:12 Korg DSS-1 24dB filter sweeps
1:04 Korg DSS-1 12dB filter sweeps
2:01 Korg Minilogue 24dB filter sweeps
2:52 Korg Minilogue 12dB filter sweeps
3:49 Dave Smith 24dB filter sweeps
4:39 Dave Smith 12dB filter sweeps

My take is that the filters all have different qualities that make them unique. The DSS-1 isn't as resonant as the others and it gets quieter when the filter is applied, even with max resonance. The Minilogue gets a little bit dirty, doesn't seem to sweep as low in frequency, has less bass to it than others and the 12dB filter signal is a little "hotter" than the 24dB filter. The Mopho adds volume when in 24dB mode and the resonance is up, which is unlike the other two. It's resonance sweeps super low and is slightly more bass heavy. Watch the peak of the spectrum as it sweeps during the 24dB 100 resonance sweep. At 4:27 the peak is about +6dB, but it increases as it gets lower in frequency. At 4:32 it is about +18db, so it resonates more at low frequencies and is not quite linear across the spectrum. The Mopho 12dB filter has less character though.

Basically 12dB Minilogue is my favorite "dirty" sound, the DSS-1 12dB is my favorite "clean" filter for pads and mid-range sounds, 24dB Mopho is my favorite for bass type sounds."

ACID Test: Dave Smith Mopho VSTi

YouTube via inbetweenmovements — May 29, 2010 — "with the MOPHO VSTi it is really possible to get out every sound from this great analog synth!
The Vsti is free: http://code.google.com/p/ctrlr/downlo...
It`s there for windows and OSX!
I was really waiting for that VSTi because MIDI Implementation of MOPHO is not working with every controller, the MOPHO knobs are crappy and now I can finally use the APC 40 to control mopho

I recommend headphones to hear the analog quality of this demo"

Totally 80s Jam - Mopho SE - JU-06 - JX-03 - JP-08 - Minilogue - Simmons SDS8 - Roland MKS7

Published on Jun 12, 2016 Earmonkey Music

"I swear this Mopho SE bass will split your face open,.....I did the cover of Living On Video and I loved how the Mopho SE bass sounded so much that I wanted to just do an original jam. Trans-X is better than this....but this was still pretty fun. All synth is played live on this one but the Mopho SE bass which is being sequenced by the Ensoniq EPS16+ (for the most part...I do play it live briefly in the middle). The Beatstep Pro acts as the master clock for the Ensoniq. The Simmons SDS8 really fattens up the TR707 drums. And that Mopho Bass...."

DSI Mopho Presets Bank 3 in Stereo Part 1

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"Here are all the presets from bank 3, the first half anyway, of the fantastic new Dave Smith Instruments MoPho. The MoPho is synced up with an Elektron Machinedrum via MIDI and a drumbeat is being fed into the MoPho's external audio in. Depending on the patch, the external input level is turned up or down. There are some really great patches and starting points in there. It's got great chiptune stuff, fatty basses and leads and some really fun percussion potential."

Dave Smith Instruments Tetra

via Dave Smith Instruments
"•Affordable, fully programmable poly synth with a 100% analog signal path.
•Classic, real analog sound—including legendary Curtis analog low-pass filter.
•Four-part multitimbral capability with four separate outputs.
•Combo Mode for huge unison patches, stacked sequences, and "modular-style" poly sounds.
•Expandable: poly chain with other Tetras, Prophet '08, and Mopho for expanded polyphony
•Just 7.9" x 5" (20.07 cm x 12.7 cm).
•Free editor for Mac OS and Windows.
Overview
Tetra is our next-generation analog poly synth. Tetra takes the award-winning sound and features of Mopho, multiplies them by four, and packs them in a box less than half an inch larger!

Tetra has multiple personalities. It is a four-voice, analog poly synth, a sort of “mini Prophet.” It's a four-part, multitimbral synth with separate outputs, essentially four Mophos in one very compact box. And it’s a voice expander for other Tetras or the Prophet ’08.

Outside the Box
Physically, Tetra is similar to Mopho, with four assignable parameter controls per program and a row of controls dedicated to the most commonly used performance parameters. All of the parameters can be accessed from the front panel and Tetra is fully programmable. A free, downloadable editor is available for Mac OS and Windows to facilitate more comprehensive tweaking.

Most of the rotary controls are detented encoders, but Cutoff and Resonance are potentiometers, allowing full sweeps with a single turn. The Push It button is a manual trigger to play notes and latch sequences on without the need for a MIDI controller.

Audio is output in mono, stereo, or per voice, via the four audio output jacks. There is also a headphone out. MIDI communication is by standard MIDI in and out jacks or USB. Poly Chain Out is a special, dedicated MIDI output to chain multiple instruments for increased polyphony.

Under the Hood
The voice architecture is based on the Prophet '08, but with the addition of a sub-octave generator for each oscillator and a fully programmable feedback loop for each voice. That breaks down to two DCOs, a resonant low-pass filter, three DADSR envelope generators, four LFOS, deep modulation routing, an arpeggiator, and a 16 x 4 analog-style step sequencer per voice. Feedback is capable of producing effects ranging from mild distortion to fairly extreme harmonic instability. (That's a good thing.) The possibilities are nearly endless. And the audio signal path is 100% analog.

Tetra a la Mode
In Program Mode, Tetra is a four-voice, polyphonic synthesizer with four banks of 128 programs. As with the Prophet '08, each program contains two layers—each layer is essentially a separate patch—that can be used to create keyboard splits or stacked sounds. Banks 1 and 2 are the Prophet '08 factory programs; banks 3 and 4 are a combination of Mopho and new programs.

In Combo Mode, a different program can be assigned to each of the four voices. Combos can be used for mammoth unison patches or for triggering up to four different 16 x 4 sequences—each with its own program—simultaneously. Combos can also be used to create "modular-style" polyphonic patches, where each voice plays a different program, with a slight variation on the same sound or even a drastically different sound.

In Multi Mode, Tetra becomes a multitimbral sound module capable of playing four monophonic parts on four MIDI channels, with separate outputs for each voice. Coupled with a MIDI sequencer and DAW, Tetra can play complex arrangements or analog drum parts with each part individually processed and recorded to its own track.

This One Goes to 12...and 16
Up to four Tetras can be poly chained for eight, twelve, or sixteen voices total. When used with a Prophet '08, up to two Tetras can be poly chained for a maximum of sixteen voices. In addition, the Prophet's front panel controls map directly to almost all of Tetra's parameters, so the Prophet acts as a programmer and control surface. And a Mopho can be connected to Tetra's Poly Chain Out for five-voice operation."

dsi mopho demo #5 & elektron machinedrum

YouTube via jakomaron — May 26, 2010 — "Mopho multi preset technic. (Shaolin technic)

The Elektron Machinedrum drives the Mopho (I use a mid machine with different pgm change on each note) and it play the drums too (TR606 samples). There's no computer in the party.

The big muff is on the mopho and the machinedrum.

I swap from classic to extended mode on the machinedrum :

- in extended mode it play the midi notes and the pgm change for the mophos.

- in classic mode the parameters setting is lost, no more midi pgm change is transmited to the mopho.

I even mess with the mophos preset during the play.
I use some echoes of the boss RE-20 (space echo).
And I use some reverb echoes of the yamaha 01v.

Peace love unity and have it fun.

Dave Smith Instruments Retires their First Synth, the Evolver, the Mopho Series, and the Tetra

It's hard to believe it, but Dave Smith is retiring the Evolver, his first new hardware synth under the DSI brand, along with the Mopho series and the Tetra. The discontinuation of the Evolver marks the end of an era. I'm actually the proud owner of Evolver SN #132! I remember the excitement when Dave Smith re-entered the hardware synthesizer scene with the Evolver. It offered four oscillators, two digital with waveforms from the classic Sequential Circuits Prophet-VS, two analog, Curtis analog filters, effects, and four sequencers that could drive each oscillator separately as well as a multitude of destinations. It was, and still is, an incredibly powerful synthesizer. I snatched mine when it was first released.

via Dave Smith Instruments:

"We’re retiring some of our much-loved but mature products — namely, Mopho, Mopho Keyboard, Mopho Keyboard SE, Tetra, and Evolver. While each of these instruments is something of a classic in its own right, and each has found its place in countless studio recordings and stage performances, a time comes when every good synth deserves its place in the great electronic retirement community in the sky.

If you ever wanted to add any of these highly-regarded instruments to your arsenal, get them now before they’re gone. Find a DSI dealer here or contact sales@davesmithinstruments.com."

As always be sure to check with the dealers on the right!

E-Ther + Mopho (my first track made with a theremin)

video upload by Musical Miscellany (Poorness Studios)

"I recently posted an unboxing video of this MIDI theremin [posted here] so I decided to pair it with my Mopho and create a track. NOTE: I put all the patch bank/numbers on the screen. However, I have the Mopho Keyboard patches loaded on my Mopho module so they may be slightly different than a factory Mopho."
