Rhythm Studio Update 1.08 – TB-3 Mk. II In the Works

via Rhythm Studio

"We are putting the finishing touches on a greatly improved TB-3 synth.

We rebuilt the TB-3 from scratch starting from the original synth schematics and circuit diagrams. We created hundreds of samples of the original TB-303 hardware along with more samples from a modified version of the x0xb0x so that we could study every nuance and characteristic of the true sound.

It starts with the oscillator signal which at first seem like a very standard saw and square wave, but while traveling down the circuitry, get transformed into very frequency dependent shapes. From there the signal enters the filter which is special resonant 4-pole design with an 18dB frequency response.

The most difficult part was calibrating the complex interactions of knob controls. For example, on accented notes, high resonance values actually soften the filter envelope while accent affects both overall amplitude and cutoff frequency. Just subtle difference in knob positions can dramatically change the sound.

The TB-3 mk. II retains the original synth code, and we have added a simple switch to change the modeling engine. This provides you the choice of which version fits your particular song.

Please note that the new TB-3 mk. II is very processor heavy and may affect performance on older devices such as the iPhone 3G and that generation. Newer devices have no problem running it. In these cases, we recommend that you use only 1 instance of the TB-3 mk. II or use the original emulation to keep performance of the app at a maximum."

Analog Bite

Rhythm Wolf combines a drum machine, bass synthesizer, and step sequencer into one rugged device with a fierce, 100% analog signal path.

Take the beat off the leash with fully tweakable kick, snare, open and closed hi-hat, and accent percussion sounds. Use the oscillator with selectable waveforms – sawtooth/square wave – and analog filter to create bass sequences that squelch and growl. Gate Trigger In/Out, USB MIDI, and 5-pin MIDI In/Out enable Rhythm Wolf to join your inner-circle of vintage and modern gear to integrate with hardware synthesizers, sound modules, DAWs, and more.

Into the Wild

A 32-step standalone sequencer and six custom-calibrated MPC-style pads are onboard for extensive programming and finger drumming. Mute/solo, intro/fill and sequence A/B switches give you the space to roam with complete control over your beat.

Torn into Parts

Carve out the perfect drum textures with continuously variable volume and tuning for each part. The kick drum attack and decay are adjustable for transients that hang, bang, and crush. Snare and open hi-hat also feature decay controls for unique sound design while the adjustable accent percussion can be modulated to click, punch, knock, "shush" and more.

The Face of Bass

Make menacing basslines with a tweakable, onboard bass synth. Envelope, filter and waveform controls let you design low-end that goes from liquid-smooth to bone-crushing and everywhere in between. Filter Resonance and Cutoff add distinction and movement to live or studio performances, while the step-sequencer keys let you program parts across a 3-octave scale.

Trigger Happy

Rhythm Wolf mates with your collection of synths that support Gate Triggers to create exclusive sonic offspring. Use it with supported homebrew hardware, classics or modern machines and infuse Rhythm Wolf DNA into all of your creations.

Let it Howl

Get your hands dirty with a custom noise, grit and distortion effect completely unique to this breed of instrument. The Howl knob lets you mangle the music into all-new textures, transitions and progressions that snarl, bark and howl. Use it as an effect or a part of your signature sound that stands alone on the food chain.

50-year-old Rhythm Machine with Midi! & Joe Jackson's - Steppin' Out

Published on Dec 20, 2019

"My Roland TR-77 / Rhythm -77 is just back from surgery after it had a Unipulse midi kit installed.

Here's Tubbutec's page on it: https://tubbutec.de/unipulse/

Here's the other videos I mentioned:

Thanks for watching!"

Sampling Vintage Rhythm Machines [INCLUDES FREE SAMPLES]

Published on Sep 12, 2019 Alex Ball

"I love the sound of old analogue rhythm machines, but I always wanted to be able to program them like my drum machines. Without the knowledge or skill to modify them, I thought that maybe multi-sampling them would give me what I was after.

I’m over the moon with the results and I think that the Kontakt multi versions sound awesome. Hopefully you’ll have fun with them too!

Download: http://bit.ly/RhythmMachines

Bit of background: Although the earlier rhythm machines were intended to accompany lone musicians (mainly organists) and were controlled with start/stop footswitches, they do crop up in a few records.

The “Cha-Cha” preset from the TR-77 appears in Ultravox’s “Hiroshima Mon Amour” and it’s apparently the (rather processed) rhythm machine heard at the start of Squeeze’s “Take me I’m yours”. The seemingly popular “Cha-Cha” also appears at the start of Duran Duran’s “Girls on Film” albeit at a different pitch (perhaps done with tape speed).

The earlier version of the Rhythm 55B (the Rhythm 55) was also the very unit used by Joe Jackson on “Steppin’ Out”. In fact, he’s recently been bringing it out on tour with him: [below]

The Korg is a bit of a hanger on being released in 1982 given that 808s, LinnDrums and DMXs were out by then. The Roland CR-5000 and CR-8000 also snuck into the 80s, but they were really at the end of this kind of instrument that had its heyday in the late 60s and 70s.

Instruments used in this video:
Roland Rhythm 77 / TR-77 (1972)
Korg Rhythm 55B / KR-55B (1982)
Roland SH-1000 (1973)
Korg MS-20 (1978)
ARP Odyssey model 2813 (1975)
Roland Juno-6 (1982)"

Friend-Chip MrLab RhythmLab Modular Synthesizer-System

via this auction

details in Googlish:

"Music computer system. Historically, to document the development of the former German Synthi-scene, this is a very important and unique exhibit. It probably dates from the time of the Berlin School synth in the 70s.

Here was a complete music system in a professional Flightcase to a transportation unit, consisting of

1. Level:
modular synthesizer unit
The special synthesizer module in the upper part of the set:
This elaborate special Anferigung duo consists of a digital generator
with exact half-way voice and several envelope-formers such as filters.
These are the underlying Mr.LAB-linking system.

2. Level:
MR.LAB
computer sequencer unit.

3. Level:
RHYTHM LAB
Trans Poser
a drum sequencer trigger unit.
Right there is a button for immediate octave transpositions of
top generator unit, linked with the MR.LAB.

4. Level:
FC350 (RhythmLab extension of the individual outputs)
Cassette interface
In the bottom row left the digital DRUM module FRIENDSHIP.
It is with the RHYTHM LAB-driven and has individual outputs,
and a stereo-OUT with mixed field.
Right there is a cassette recorder for the UP / DOWN-LOAD the Trig / Tone data.

The Rhythm Lab Friend Chip first came to one device on the market, on the one hand the functions of traditional rhythm and other devices offered the old desire fulfilled, even rhythms freely invent them.

You could also still usual 32 programs and select any combination. There are Drumpart and percussion (both 12 cycles) separate presets, so that here a variety of combinations available. Over a foot switch or through a break-probe 1 may also 8 bars breaks are retrieved.

The computer now allows 32 bars free program. For rapid work to copy a preset to the "Bar On Program" to him after his own tastes change.

With another break switch 2 may break sequences are retrieved, breaks with as many bars in the sequence as they occur in music pieces, strung together.

Modern technology offers not only an imitation of the toms, bass drum, etc. but also shares the metallic sound of snare drum and cymbals.

In addition to the stereo out, there is a clock-out for synchronization with sequencers.

As an optional modification, a cassette interface offered to prepared programs on tape to store and quickly retrieve, and an extension with individual outputs for each instrument and the possibility of the amplitudes separately regulated. This is here with us.

Mr.Lab was a computer sequence of the new generation, in which one up to 2048 tones could save (in the 16th represents udn Triplets The 64 bars), and at a range of 4 octaves and individual design for each tone (filter, loudness, Sustain). A novel computer-linked keyboard melody and rhythm input. With only musical instruments (any programmer working with numerical codes deleted) Mr.Lab offers a previously unheard clarity and flexibility. This new approach then, and the extensive Composer software Mr.Lab recommended not only for quick, creative work in the studio and trouble-free use in life performances, but also as a composition, arrangement and notation help.
Rhythm: 2048 Steps, with three voltages, program, and four Gate Trigger! Input clock for clock the chip by Friend developed rhythm keyboard, any Tonlängen, triplets, all types of stroke, continuously variable, optical acoustic monitor

melody: four octaves, input directly playable on Melody keyboard, a visual indicator in the keys assigned to the rhythm is displayed, fast, smooth Correct LOUDNESS, filter, sustain: to be assigned to the displayed tone, dynamics, accents, accurate Tonlängen, optical monitor, continuously variable multi-trigger: four from the melody tracks are independent trigger for controlling an electronic drum, etc. available, 64 free programmable cycles

tempo: digitally adjustable, four-digit display, seconds to milliseconds

At the Trans Poser, I can actually say very little, except that a button is missing a button. He has a 20-key keyboard (quasi 1 1 / 2 octaves), as well as octave up / down. Interesting find here the Porta Mentor Egler, possibly to Transpose to perform smoothly.

The cassette device appears at first glance a little suspect, so far it seems from a hi-fi unit seems to come, but if it's because its purpose ...

About modular synthesizer unit I could find no information, whether by friend-chip comes from. The push-button recall. It is a modular system consisting of 2 VCOs, PWM, VCF, VCA, Trigger, ADSR and LFO that has a separate bar with standard jacks patched."

Circuit Rhythm with Sequential Take 5 - Trovarsi Connects

video upload by Novation

"We've partnered with our sibling brands, @SequentialLLC and @FocusriteTV, to give you the chance to refresh your studio set up. We’ve put together a powerful synth recording bundle, that includes a Circuit Rhythm and the Sequential Take 5 - that'll have you creating unique beats, striking leads and warm pads, in a hassle-free workflow.

Sign up here before Nov 7th for your chance to win! - https://www.sequential.com/win-a-synt...

In this video, @Trovarsi demonstrates how the Circuit Rhythm and the Take 5 can be used together to make a complete musical arrangement and performance. She's sending MIDI from the Circuit Rhythm to the Take 5 to sync their clocks. Trovarsi records a chord progression into the step sequencer, using ties and timed steps to lengthen the progression to 8 bars. The audio from the Take 5 is running into the Circuit Rhythm, allowing end of chain effects to be utilized for all the audio, as well freeing up her hands to perform and experiment with the filters, distortion, and delays on both machines.

Circuit Rhythm's stereo/mono inputs make it easy to sample sounds directly to the groovebox for quick sequencing and sample mangling fun. After sampling, you can quickly get into creative mode and make a sequence out of the samples as well as use some of the Grid Fxs for performance fun!

It's easy to create packs and download your samples from Circuit Rhythm too. Simply connect your Circuit Rhythm to the computer and go to Components. https://components.novationmusic.com/"

Exploring the Elka Rhythm Machine

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"There wasn't really a decent video out there so we thought we'd plug in our Elka Rhythm Machine and make one. We have two of these in the studio at the moment but one is awaiting repairs, otherwise we would have made a comparison of the two.
Following the Drummer One, the Elka Rhythm Machine is almost the same in layout and functionality, with individual volumes for each drum sound.
But where the Drummer One is smooth and punchy, the Rhythm Machine offers lovely harsh, noise generated drum sounds and some different variation rhythm patterns.
The machine only lets you engage one pattern at a time, and the "secret" drum rhythm mentioned in a few places online, - the pattern playing when no rhythm is engaged - is the Shake pattern :)
At the end of the video we compare the Rhythm Machine to the Drummer One so one can really hear the differences and similarities.
We think both machines are great, and as we mention in the video, the Drummer Ones differ quite a bit from one machine to another, so we already decided to compare two Drummer Ones as well - coming soon so keep an eye out for that."

New Synths & Effects Coming to Pulse Code Inc's Rhythm Studio

via Pulse Code

"As hinted at by our new app icon, we are adding another subtractive monosynth in the classic Moog style.

It will be a 2 oscillator synth with oscillator sync and ring modulation. The oscillators themselves will be modeled, so it isn’t going to have perfect waveforms, but will look and sound more like real hardware.

The new synth will also have a 24db resonant ladder filter and full ADSR envelopes for both filter and amp.

Besides the new synth, we have 4 more effects:

E.Q.
Phaser
Auto Filter
Amp Distortion

All of the work above has either been completely coded, or is almost done, so we can gaurantee that it will make the next major update."
