Yamaha YC-30 and YC-45D insides and demo

YouTube Uploaded by sounddoctorin on Aug 18, 2011

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com gives details of YC-30 combo organ and demos it. We meant to get a YC-45D demo but ran out of time before Paul had to take it with him but there's a good demo at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkGZifhBFBc [below] of it's sounds and the great ring mod preset for the ribbon on that one. The 30 docs are dated 1969 as I recall and the 45D came out in '73 or thereabouts I believe. Always see the yamaha product history link on my page to remove doubt.. Amazing units for their day!"

Crumar Bit ones: SSM2044 (rare) and CEM3328, polysix 2044 exploration

YouTube via sounddoctorin | October 24, 2010

"Bob Weigel Of Sound Doctorin' (http://www.sounddoctorin.com) compares the two version of Crumar's 6 voice x2DCO polysynth the Bit One. A short production of SSM2044 units were made. This is number 27. The ssm2044 is explored with more easy on the polysix nearby. But some good comparisons of the two units are made side by side and thought we can't be certain as to the precision of the alignments I believe they sound very close to each other but we can hear the subtle differences if we listen carefully in places. Hopefully the discerning ear can tell the difference between potential variations in tuning and the actual qualities of the circuitry."

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com does two minute or so demos of these 70's string/bass machine in the case of the Multivox String and Bass MX-202... or String and Keyboard in case of the Elka Rhapsody 610. The smaller 490 is apparently a scaled down to string only version..I haven't played one but they are highly regarded also I hear."

Hohner Bass 2 and Bass 3 comparison

YouTube Uploaded by sounddoctorin on Jul 15, 2011

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com gets two great specimens of the Hohner Bass line side by side. I actually don't know if a bass 1 was released... I don't see any immediate information anyway searching. I've only prior worked on the Bass 3 I think. This is the first Bass 2 I've seen so I assume it's fairly rare."

Fender Starmaster Organ Part 1

YouTube via sounddoctorin
"Bob Weigel ( http://www.sounddoctorin.com ) endures a cold and shows a bit around the insides of one of the rarest organs on earth. Well certainly the rarest of the really cool ones I think :-). Porto built the machine for Fender and they apparently decided to abort production immediately with only 9 of them released I've heard. This site as well as combo organ heaven give a blip on it. http://www.audiomastermind.us/2005/08..."

KORG PE-2000 Vintage Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

This one is from the synth tech sounddoctorin.

"The PE2000 was created in 1976 as I recall and has the one of the most definitive phaser effects of the era I think working with preset sounds through EQ and A-R envelope. And three oscillator divide down with all it's analog glory. :-) This one has been reconditioned to perfect shape and I play it in 'a few of my favorite strings' video on the sounddoctorin youtube channel [see this post] for a sound demo. As you can see the cosmetics of the keyboard is marvelous. The case has it's wear and tear but nothing too bad. Probably could get some of the same type material and use a good adhesive to hold it in the little missing strip you see there. But I figured it's just part of the vibe on this one and at least the parts that matter usually are awesome. ALSO note that only the middle latch works. The outer ones could be replaced by common latches if someone thought that important for more secure xport but didn't seem a priority to me. I have too many string machines and need to bail out some of the expenses from repairing vehicles including an old '73 wagoneer we're using for prospecting that was sold to me 'ready to drive' with a cam that had flat lobes. lol. Doing some gold prospecting this summer. What fun! Hopefully on the trail of something good here but haven't been showing my face around youtube or ebay as much as a result. WATCH FOR MORE AUCTIONS though including some classic combo organs and synths! And sub my youtube channel as hopefully I'll have a lot more synth repair vids etc. up there soon along with our prospecting exploits :-).."

Inside the Korg Polysix. Analog synths with Storage

YouTube via sounddoctorin. via Nusonica.
"Bob Weigel of http://sounddoctorin.com goes over the layout of some of the more significant components in the Korg Polysix, a synthesizer which sold around 22,000 units produced from 1981 to 1983 or thereabouts. Korg simplified and cut cost in many ways on these units but they stand as one of the few fully analog (with a discrete VCO for each voice if not two) polyphonic synthesizers ever mass produced along with the Prophet 5/10, the Oberheim OBX, OBXa, and OB8, which had BOTH memory and full editing from the panel without toggling through menus etc. Later a MIDI retrofit was also introduced bringing this unit and a rather nice one I hear. Hopefully I can get mine working that I just purchased broken :-). That unit is not shown in this demo though. The MIDI board lays over the top of the CPU's and a connector actually goes into the cpu sockets and the cpu's set on the new MIDI retro board."

Korg Delta electronic and cosmetic repairs

YouTube via sounddoctorin | February 16, 2011 |

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com shows the insides of a Korg Delta and explains the overview of operation, and plays a few sounds to give a feel for this great synth. The delta is all knobs and sliders. And a joystick that can both be set for a bend amount and filter modulation amount on the x axis. The y is modulation up and noise mod down. Made in 1979 along with the Lambda and Sigma. Lambda is a fully polyphonic machine with simpler controls but 3X the oscillators and dividers! Both are great to have around! The sigma is a monosynth with a very useful performance interface. I'll try to cover these in another video soon!"

Siel Orchestra II; differences in the OR400 and Sequential Circuits Prelude versions

YouTube via sounddoctorin
"Bob Weigel of Sound Doctorin' ( http://www.sounddoctorin.com) compares these two divide down combo synths of the early 80's. They are primarily just different cosmetically. But it turns out there is a fairly major surprise in that the SCI machine has normal polyphonic release on the strings, whereas the Siel OR400 'mutes' the strings when a new chord or note is hit without fingers on the previously established chord/note. Useful in a mix. But distracting when listened to alone when you are trying to get a flowing overlay of notes. I cut out the section where I talked about the volume controls delivering different levels at the points I had them set also. I guess I never checked to see if the SCI unit just had hotter output or of it's a different taper slider come to think of it. Oh well. Not a major factor anyway. But there is a difference there. And the EQ's as I noted are very different in their levels. The OR400... you have to set them all very high to get levels similar to the un-eq'd sound where the Prelude this is not the case. There may be a trimmer for that. Not sure. I'll look into it someday maybe. I don't have the service manual for these...just the Orchestra 1 I believe."

Yamaha CS-15D Demo

YouTube via sounddoctorin
"Bob Weigel of http://sounddoctorin.com (incredible tech resource page included) demonstrates the somewhat rare Yamaha CS-15D two vco analog monosynth. This machine mixes a vco dedicated to preset voicings with one that can be presets or the knobs. (manual). Great sounding classic CS series machine with the standard chips used in the other great ones, but more useful in performance with some great presets."

Korg Micro-Preset monophonic synthesizer

YouTube via sounddoctorin
"Bob Weigel of Sound Doctorin' http://www.sounddoctorin.com (see the newly reorganized synth technical resource!) demonstrates the Micro-preset from 1977 or thereabouts. This one has a few non-original knobs but most are original. It was a wreck when it came in. Now it's awesome. I think it'd be great with a keytar apparatus. I should seriously mod a pitch bend neck into it. The sounds are sweet! It uses two Korg 35 filters, one for the left three buttons which allow use of the 'traveller' filter slider and one for the right three. The large knob is a footage selector but also causes on some of the buttons there to be variations. For example two of them on the 2nd button are pink and white noise. And there are various presets with different filter networks in the signal path to create a particularly nice Bassoon and other great tones. The buttons are generally a percussive synth with preset attack and variable release/decay on the first button from 32' to 2'. The short 32 key keyboard needs that :-). And the second button as I said has two noise settings but the other three are 32' 8' and 2' as I recall. Then the third button is brass from Tuba to high trumpet. Fourth button covers strings sounds, fifth woodwinds and sixth sax type sounds though none of them sound very saxy to me. Good sounds though. The winds strings and brass are more useful to me though and the synthe sounds. Very great machine to cover most of what you can get out of the early korgs plus some unique voicings in an often less expensive package."

Siel DK600 tech talk; a tough nut to crack

Published on Apr 24, 2014 sounddoctorin·188 videos

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com gives a tech overview of The Siel DK600 aka Opera 6 aka Kiwi. This synth has some fantastic attributes if you can get one working reliably. I've found some problems besides the common battery spill which just requires a lot of socket/chip changing, trace repair and cleanup usually. The voltage on 5V supply can drift too low and particularly hitting notes hard the s+h cells for key voltage will bleed back onto the power supply through the analog switch 4051's. This creates a phantom lfo strangeness when you hit keys hard. Anyway you may find yourself in a labor of love on these and hopefully this video helps some people. Always check the website for more tech tips, parts etc.

The architecture is somewhat similar to the polymoog except with only 6 voices instead of fully polyphonic in that it uses analog VCO's driving a divide down network. In the Polymoog the frequencies are hard wired of course like an organ but in the siel they are assigned to synth channels by the computer like any polysynth. Watch the demo video showing more of the sounds layered with the Expander module! (A Dk600 with only volume and tune knobs that are analog controls for the vco's)"
