Moog & Tron End Titles Cover

"This is a keyboard cover of Tron Legacy's original soundtrack by Daft Punk. Everything was played and recorded with the Moog Little Phatty Stage II.

The SYNTHWAY address is for my brazilian blog... only in portuguese. :)

The first part was a bit difficult to sync with the video, but I guess you can imagine that! I played the thing 2 times in a row while recording the MIDI file (with a little bit of quantize to keep the thing like an arpeggio).

The knob tweaking part is showing a nice feature of the Little Phatty, named Pot Map. I'm changing 3 parameters of the filter in realtime... the modulation knob (not seen) is for the EG Amount, oscillator knob for resonance and the filter knob for cutoff.

Third part, playing the melody while changing the OSC2 pitch, to get that nice OSC Sync effect. Nothing really special... added a very smooth delay in that lead, from EHX Deluxe Memory Boy.

Fourth part, playing the melody in a different way, while using the modulation wheel for controlling filter cutoff, getting that nice wah-wah sound. This part is using the internal LP arpeggio for playing the high-pitched pattern. A little touch of delay in both synth lines.

Didn't record it in video, but the deep bass and drum sounds were made with the LP. Everything was recorded thru Scarlett 2i2 in Logic Pro 9.

Demo Boss DC-2W + Nord Lead A1 [NO TALKING]

"Just some random improvisations and tweaking sounds coupled with the marvelous DC-2 Waza from Boss. Up to 7 minutes I was using it in SDD-320 mode, and after that a bit of the original DC-2 mode. I go swtiching all the modes (1-2-3-4 and combinations of them) progressively throughout the whole demo."

"On the same day I've used both pedals (CE-2W and DC-2W) and the Nord A1. The only real difference is that the DC-2W is true stereo, meaning that I could record a single stereo track. For the CE-2W you get one side with the effect, the other without, so the best way to combine its own sound is to pan a bit of each track (in this case, one is 12R the other 12L).

It is a marvelous pedal, with a more subtle CE-2 mode, a medium CE-1 mode, and a vibrato option, that coupled with synthesizers sounds great.

Improvising with Animoog and Little Phatty. The setup is quite simple, and the result is what you hear. It was a very cool experience, and thought it would be nice to share. I could've explored the filter capabilities a little better, but I just didn't want to.

During the video I use the Little Phatty sort like a bass, with the LOW KEY PRIORITY.

Minitaur soul on Sub Phatty?

"Showing some Minitaur inspired sounds on the Sub Phatty while testing some new camera angles. See full description to understand what's going on.

On the first few minutes I'm just showing some Minitaur inspired sounds. After that, I'm tweaking the Sub Phatty with the limitations of the Minitaur. The presets also share these limitations:
- 2 OSC, saw or square, with VCO reset, 1 octave limit between OSC
- 1 VCF, not using MULTIDRIVE
- 2 ADSR, with shared time for DR
- 1 LFO with triangle wave (not used)

My impression is that the Sub Phatty is capable of delivering some very nice Minitaur sounds when VCO reset is on. The thing just sounds heavy.

Some observations:
- Sometimes I'm tweaking out of the Minitaur possibilities, but I'm skipping these results (you'll see pretty clearly).
- From what I've read, the oscillators on the Sub can sound close to the Minitaur ones, and from my experience, using the volume of up to 9 give better results.
- I'm eventually using OSC2 just to give some harmonics to OSC1 (low volume), but you can still hear some of that detune magic happening.
- Things start to get out of Minitaur's comfort zone when too much resonance is added (not that it isn't capable of doing that....).
- Unfortunately I dont have a Minitaur so I can compare both. I have a Little Phatty though, so if you want to hear something specific, please share on the comments.

V Synth GT - Saying Goodbye #3

Luke's Theme on a Minimoog Voyager + EHX Cathedral

"I was just having fun with the Voyager and started to play this melody out of nowhere... had to share with you. This is one of my favorite themes on any movie, simply beautiful music.

This is very simple, just the main melodic line of the theme with some ethereal reverb on the top.

The sound is a simple brassy patch with a LOT of reverb, which was inspired by Moog's new Grandmother synthesizer. The reverb is an EHX Cathedral, with a spring reverb, low feedback, high reverb time, 40% blend."

A Phatty Duel - Sub Phatty vs Little Phatty

"This is a non scientific video comparing these awesome synths.

For lack of more time with both, I couldn't actually compare several things that I find needed (such as two oscillator added) and what one could do and the other couldn't (and it goes both ways, even with the Sub being the feature-rich one).

I just sold my Sub Phatty because I didn't have room for it anymore after moving. I loved it! I even have my name on Moog's official website for some patches I developed for the Editor (IC folder).

I hope you enjoy what I could compare in the time I had at my disposal. It was made on the fly without any sort of "scripting" and I do get lost/forget stuff along the way. Not comparing the detuning on both was a big mistake for example. Even so, I still think that it gives an idea of the differences between them.

Be nice on your comments, I'm not trying to say one is better than the other - the Little Phatty is the single instrument I'll never sell. It was a great gift from my mother, and I'll never part with it.

"Playing with combined presets in a MULTI setting. 3 voices for each sound... one is a constant beating bell-like sound, with interesting modulations, and the other is a plain lush pad sound.

My second day with the little beast and I just wanted to share why I'm so happy with it! Beautiful sounds out of this little machine!

Out of curiosity, this is a 6xSMR4 Ambika being controlled by Animoog for iPad. I can't really show any playing skills with those tiny "keys", but you can hear how it sounds, and that's what really matters.

My girlfriend was responsible for filming this (and also the next video!)..."

Sounds of Ambika - No 2

"Again, showing a MULTI on the Ambika, controlled by Animoog. It's simply an incredible synth with lots of tonal possibilities and an amazing analog filter to go along with the digital wavetables on the osc section.

This time I'm using 3 layers: 1 with a 4-voice pad; 2 mono synth with an arpeggiated up pattern; 3 a monosynth with another arpeggio up&down pattern, available only on some keys. The sounds are more basic, but shows the other kind of sounds this amazing thing can make. I'm just scratching the surface since it's my second day with it! :)

Don't mind my playing skills with the iPad... I'm originally a piano guy and the tiny "keys" on the screen makes it difficult for me to play (I could make the keys bigger, but I would miss the range I wanted to play on).

6xSMR4 filter on this Ambika! It was build for me by Laurentide Synth Works BTW..."

Ambika and TRON - Derezzed Cover

"Mutable Instruments Ambika + Genome MIDI Sequencer

This is a cover for TRON: Legacy Derezzed by Daft Punk. Using the iPad as a MIDI sequencer for MI Ambika.

In this video you can see a very nice aspect of the Ambika: it can act as 6 monosynths at the same time, recording each synth voice with a different MIDI channel, which is what I did for this video. As you can see, you're able to tweak several parameters from different section within the same page (Performance Page).

I'm tweaking the following parameters:
First row - osc1 para / osc2 para / osc2 pitch / bitcrush amount
Second row - filter cutoff / filter resonance / 2 others not used

"My third attempt on this beautiful music, with my favorite instrument. It isn't perfect, but shows how beautifully synthesizers can be used as a mean to play classical music. I think I could do it better, but since I won't have much time to practice and perfect it, this is good enough.

The patch is as you can see on the synth, a single oscillator, with the correct envelopes, gentle modulation.
