Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 and Poly Sequencer

images via this auction via AH:
"This Prophet 5, ser.#5049, was purchased directly from Sequential Circuits and has lived its whole life in a non-smoking professional recording studio environment in the SF bay area, under the protection of the original owner. Save for one or two nicks in the wood paneling, this instrument is in perfect condition. The MIDI option was installed by a Sequential design engineer. The original protective plastic facing is still intact. The hardshell case was custom built for it at the time of purchase. It too is in new condition. The rare, companion Sequential Poly-Sequencer works only with the P-5, and only when MIDI is disabled (via a switch on the back panel). Original manuals for both P5 and Poly-Sequencer are included, both in pristine condition. hear it here: http://www.tapewarm.com/Litwin_att94C.mp3 all done only with the P5 and poly-sequencer!! pretty cool, huh!!"

And a noodle:

"first thirty seconds, exp. fm input at about ~8:00
second thirty seconds, exp. fm input increased gradually to full
last thirty seconds, back to ~8:00
patch:
SoC (top row) modules triggered by lfo (second row)
0 triggered by SoC, fm input from an LFO
4 outputs of 0 (colored cables, sine triangle and two ramps) sent to VC mixer (bottom) controlled by Morph controller (bottom) so each waveform alternately takes prominence over time in the mix."

Bad Shipping

via daddio of tapewarm:

"I received this in the mail today. And this is after I pulled the dent out some. Inside are my 2 new Doepfer modules, A149-1 and A149-2, the Source of Uncertainty Suite. Thankfully the shipper had wrapped the modules in bubble wrap and filled the box with styro peanuts so no damage was sustained. Had they been packed with wrinkled up newspaper as is too often the case, I doubt they would have survived the impact." "you might consider this as a public service announcement."

Matris Terra Ultionis

If you have been following this site over the past couple of months you should be familiar with the work of Richard Lainhart and Todd Barton (vgermuse). You will recall the Buchla 200e compositions from Richard posted here and the Akai EVI compositions from Todd posted here. You might also recall daddio of Tapewarm from these posts.

After hearing the brilliant compositions by Richard and Todd, Daddio contacted them about creating a new composition featuring theirs. They gave him the ok and Matris Terra Ultionis is the result. You can listen it here.

part one features:
metaliton, buchla2Crop, eviExtended, and buchlaStormBirds.
mixed with my WarStorm samples and an old waterphone recording

part two:
Thonk and SlowEvolution
w/more WarStorm samples and Launch

part three:
Orchestra of the Damned, SpaceMetal, buchlaDemo2, buchlaDrumSolo, eviSerge and eviSerge2
yet more from Warstorm (lol) and my My Hydrogen Gas Tank

Regarding the sources of the compositions:
"Thonk and Orchestra of the Damned are from Richard.
200e/Haken continuum

WarStorm, Launch and My Hydrogen Gas Tank are my compositions.
I used a Doepfer modular, twin Kaoss pads and a waterphone along with a boatload of samples.

All other files are Todd's: metaliton, buchla2Crop, eviExtended, and buchlaStormBirds, SpaceMetal, buchlaDemo2, buchlaDrumSolo, eviSerge and eviSerge2.
evi, buchla, serge"

Vintage ARP 2600 Synthesizer **RARE** - $4800

"I have a vintage Arp 2600 that I'm looking to get sell. It was previously owned by Roger Waters, and is now in the Thievery Corporation (ESL) studios. Its in great condition, but currently taking up too much space in the studio. It is complete with the matching cases, and we are having it serviced right now to ensure that everything is working properly before being sold. If you would like to see pictures, please let me know! We can even provide the receipt for the work as soon as its done.

I have seen ARPs in worse condition sell on ebay for $4,500+, Considering the history and the condition of this particular ARP, we would like to make sure we are getting what it's worth."

via this Craigslist post.

We haven't had a poll in a while, so why not...

Update: click here for some images of the unit courtesy of daddio of tapewarm who contacted the seller.

Udpate: and a response from the seller:
"I completely understand that you would like more proof, but it was meant more as a point of interest rather than the only selling point. The current owner has had it for years, and really has no way of proving that Roger Waters owned it, it was just a little bit of interesting history on this particular ARP. I can however, prove that it is in Thievery Corporation studios."

Peter Zinovieff & EMS

"Electronic Music Studios (London) Ltd. was formed in 1969 by Dr. Peter Zinovieff to market innovative ideas arising from his private studio and interest in musical applications of computers. Over the next ten years many seminal products were released and many talented designers worked for the company. EMS had its own peculiar brand of British eccentricity which could be both endearing and annoying, but should be viewed in the context of true pioneering. It is easy to copy and follow others, but not to think up new ideas in the first place and EMS had no shortage of originality. The EMS influence was significant and can be traced into many contemporary products." Click here for the full article including more images. The MOOG Strikes Bach

One of the many MOOG albums following Switched on Bach.

via daddio of tapewarm.

Update via Suit & Tie Guy in the comments:
"that's Hans Wurman. apparently he made a follow-up album which was never released.

there were alot of records which "followed" S-OB, but as far as quality goes the only two that come close are this one and Switched-On Nashville.

S-ON is quite interesting as there's some Tomita-like vocal synthesis on "Folsum Prison Blues" which blows my mind ever time i drop the needle on that cut. if you ever come across it, digitally or on vinyl, don't hesitate to grab it.

apparenlty John Mitchell claimed to feel The Moog Strikes Bach was either peer or superior to S-OB. if you check the Synthesizers.com Yahoo! group archive you should find some posts regarding this."

San Fransisco's Wave Organ

"At the eastern edge of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, a tiny spit of land juts into the bay. If you walk out to the end, you can see San Francisco's skyline on one side and the Golden Gate Bridge on the other.

The view alone is worth a journey, but the little peninsula offers more than scenery. It's also the home of a San Francisco wonder, the Wave Organ."

"And the sound? It's like listening to the world's largest sea shell. It's like distant drums, muffled cymbals, quiet thunder. The variety is endless, and the sounds of the pipes are punctuated by the cries of gulls and the barks of sea lions. The sounds of ships' horns drift across the bay, and little waves slap against the stones."

Electronic Music 101

via daddio:

"Your old classified post reminded me of a 'document' I saved from my college days. Circa 1972, this was handed out in my Electronic Music 101 class at U.M.B.C. (University of Maryland Baltimore County) taught by Felix Powell. Textbook for the class was Allen Strange's Electronic Music (which I still have), the one with the purple graphic on the cover. Our studio consisted of a Moog series III with the sequencer complement, a pair of suitcase Synthi's, a Teac four track w/SOS and a pair of Revox half track A77's (yes, we did 'fripper' them ;-).

Thought you and your readers might get a kick out of it.

btw,
These tunes were made in that studio:
01_Alma.mp3 (my first ever piece - no pun intended - lol)
02_DOM.mp3 ('vocals' added in '99) [not safe for work]

peace bro,

Briand, Daddio and Metasonix

Via brian comnes:
"he [daddio] and I recorded a TM3 VCO into a TM6 filter and then into series of Moogerfoogers....we really like what the Murf did to the metasonix things, (melodic drums?) we also used the Moog Analog delay external looped into the Murf while receiving TM-2 sound bursts gated by a Korg ER-1 ...we were also getting CV from a CP251 to liven things up a bit. We also ran the TM3, no envelope, just sweeping CVs for pitch into a Moog Freqbox and couldn't get much out interesting by themselves, but when gated by the ER-1 it made for some tasty drum hits"
