Sent my way via Robert who had the following to say about it:
"Now I've read through the manual and am impressed. The Tenori-on looks more useful than most of us thought it would be. It's not THE ULTIMATE SEQUENCER, but I don't think anyone expected it to be. It has better sequencer specs than I thought it would and some interesting UI implementations that other sequencers would have a hard time duplicating. I think the demo mp3s they've posted so far don't do justice to the possibilities of the Tenori-on. The big disappointment is the onboard sounds are just a rompler selection and don't appear editable. But the RM1x is this way, great sequencer with boring sounds. I always thought of it as a sketchpad where I would replace all the sounds with my own once I worked out the song. The Tenori-ON looks the same way.

I can think of a bunch of features I'd like to see on the sequencer, but maybe those will come via a software update.

Is it worth 500 pounds? It's really going to depend on the end user.
Some people already compose in the way the Tenori is laid out and they'll probably jump right on it. Is it worth $500? If Yamaha can sell it for $500 they'll sell DX-7 quantities.

A feature not previously mentioned that may really tip the scales for some is the 'Interior mode' where you can set up your Tenori to be a fancy clock that plays songs. Really. I'm not making that up. That's the feature that says 'I'm Japanese-designed!'"

New Orange Yamaha Tenori-On

No word on pricing. Specs aside from physical aspects appear to be the same.

'To coincide with the unveiling of the new model Yamaha have also confirmed a free forthcoming firmware update for current TENORI-ON customers. Following a range of user comments Yamaha are currently in the process of creating a new operating system which is expected to be available from January 2010.The update will address a number of areas including the synching of TENORI-ON to external DAW applications and offer an improved MIDI sync implementation.'"

"This song has been created by me using the Yamaha Tenori-On. I used the Tenori to create the layers (patterns) using score mode and random mode. A total of 8 different layers have been created. Once the layers were created, I used the Tenori to control the Yamaha Motif ES Rack to produce the sounds (8 parts). Obviously, the Motif ES Rack can produce much better sounds than the Tenori's internal sound processor.

"Getting the Tenori-On and Roland TB-303 Bass Line synth to sync up wasn't easy. The Tenori-On is driving the MIDI clock (through a MIDI/sync converter box), but it drifts slightly out of sync every time you switch between Modes or Blocks, or input new notes. Plus, because the Tenori-On's sequencer only seems to start and stop in place, there's no way to set it to start at the beginning of the measure except to carefully stop it right on the one. Hopefully a firmware update will make syncing the Tenori-On with other MIDI gear over MIDI clock easier in the future.

I thought the 4 parts of the TI Snow would be limiting but the sounds can be so big it is a challenge to try and be simple. The Tenori On is in "Advanced" mode so i wasn't locked into score mode for the first 4 layers which was useful on my Nord Modular G2 (which i am also uploading)."

Tenori-On iPad MIDI Output & Sync Demo

"This video tutorial shows off some of the MIDI output functionality of Yamaha's Tenori-On (TNR-i) iOS App.

You can use the Tenori-On App to sequence external hardware and software, like synthesizers or DAWs. I'm showing a MFB Nanozwerg, a MFB 522 Drum Machine and a MicroKorg in this video, as well as Ableton Live. Each Tenori-On layer corresponds to a MIDI channel, so you could output up to 16 different sequences at the same time. Apart form regular step-sequencer score layers, there are also random layers, bounce layers and more, to mix your sequences up a bit.

I'm using the Apple Camera Connection Kit and a USB-to-MIDI Cable to connect the iPad to Ableton Live. Other DAWs and CoreMIDI compatible interfaces like the Alesis I/O Dock, Line6 MIDI-Mobilizer II or the iRig MIDI should work as well.

The iPad 1 in this video runs iOS 5.0.1.

mine seems to be working ok, no overheating, i have 35 gigs in the next 3 months over europe using the tenori-on and i cant at this moment sent this unit to be checked, my live set depends a lot on the tenori-on, i hope dont fail, fingers crossed.
