LudoWic is an artist and producer of electronic music. The field he works in is the transitional area of music, art and design, in which he experiments
with modern technology in combination with old vintage techniques and gear.
LudoWic was invited by D-Sound for an artist-in-residence at Theatre "Kunstmin" located in Dordrecht the Netherlands. He asked video-artist Roel Weerdenburg to join him during this residency.
Since graduating from the Utrecht School of the Arts, Roel Weerdenburg has focused on building audiovisual installations. These installations are mainly aimed at the re-use, modification and upcycling of old electronic video equipment.
Using feedback loops, noise generators, tube televisions and vintage analog synthesizers, LudoWic and Roel created a world in which they balance between control and surrender.

1. A Demonstration Of Oskar Sala's Mixtur-Trautonium Formant Filters

A demonstration of the mixtur-trautonium's formant filters. The filter was originally designed by Freidrich Trautwein as vacuum tube (or rohrentechnik) technology in 1930, at the very beginnings of subtractive synthesis.( I mistakenly referred to subharmonic synthesis in my closing remarks) The filters here are version of the design from the halbeiter, or semiconductor mixtur trautonium dating from around 1989 and were made by Trautoniks. Doepfer - Trautonium System

video upload by NOISEBUG

"Available on Noisebug.net and Reverb."

via NOISEBUG Reverb

Note auction links are affiliate links.
See the site's privacy policy for more info. Inspired by the Trautonium invented by Friedrich Trautwein in the 1930's and most well known from Alfred Hitchcock's movie The Birds, this miniature version of the Trautonium gives you the full vibe of what it may have felt like to play the actual instrument back then.

The focus of the entire system is the Doepfer A-104 Trautonium Formant Filter. It is made of four parallel resonance filters, each filter can be switched to low pass or band pass or off. Frequency, resonance and level are controlled for each filter separately and are summed to the final output to create formant vowel like tones.

To give you the most true experience of the original Trautonium we added the Doepfer A-198 Ribbon Controller for expressive touch control of pitch and volume. This allows for free flowing pitch adjustments commonly found in acoustic instruments, like the cello, violin and other world stringed instruments.

The Doepfer A-115 Audio Divider gives you octave down divisions from the original pitch to add a classic organ type feel to the over sound, but once filtered through the A-104 you can start to get in the cello territory like mentioned above.

Modules included in this system

- A-198 Ribbon Controller
- A-110-2 VCO
- A-115 Audio Divider
- A-180-1 Multiple
- A-145 LFO
- A-104 Trautonium Formant Filter
- A-131 Exponential VCA
- Tendrils Cables (2 packs of 6)
- Tendrils Mutant Cables (2 cables)

Housed in a 4ms POD64X.

This system includes a 4ms 45W power brick.

Doepfer A-104 Trautonium Filter

via this auction

"A-104 is a fourfold formant filter as used in the Mixtur Trautonium by Oskar Sala. It is made of four parallel resonance filters, each filter can be switched to low pass or band pass or off. Frequency, resonance and level are controlled for each filter separately (no voltage control). The frequency range for the filters is about 50Hz...5kHz. The filter audio inputs are very sensitive so that distortion may intentionally be used to create new sounds - if desired. The A-104 is a versatile module for sound modification. In the first place it is used for reproduction of resonances (e.g. the vocal-like effects known from the Trautonium). In combination with the subharmonic generator A-113, the Trautonium Manual A-198 and some other A-100 modules one obtains a Trautonium replica."

A Pre-Synthesizer-Era Synthesizer - The Mixtur Trautonium

flickr By jochenWolters

"More than thirty years before Bob Moog conceived of the synthesizer as we know it today, Friedrich Trautwein developed his Trautonium, a highly complex, monophonic electronic musical instrument.

The pitch is "selected" via a string that is pressed against a metal bar and, in essence, works like a ribbon controller.

Although you may not be familiar with this fascinating "pre-synth", chances are that you've already heard some of the sounds it is capable of producing: The bird sounds in Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 movie, "The Birds", were created by Trautonium virtuoso, Oscar Sala.

Jürgen Hiller has been building and repairing Trautoniums for more than twenty years. The one you see above is being custom-built for a customer and includes an unusual percussive module labeled "Schlagwerk" (German for "drum mechanism")."

See the Trautonium label below for more.

Update via Tomoroh Hidari on Facebook: "I had the pleasure to work on a replica of a mixtur trautonium built for the Technisches Museum Vienna, together with a friend. it's an amazing instrument! here's a (free download) album we did on it (and laptops) in '08: http://alien.mur.at/ujvary/jetztzeit.html"

Leploop Lumanoise V2 Desktop Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Lumanoise v2 from Leploop Synthesizers contains one square oscillator, one 12bit sawtooth oscillator, and two trautonium-like sub oscillators. It was inspired by the Oskar Sala Trautonium instrument - the predecessor to the synthesizer- invented in the 1930's. The TMaster trautonium oscillator and it's two suboscillators are controlled by a Light Dependent Resistor. The other oscillators pitches are also controlled by Light Dependent Resistors with their volumes variable with a knob. The oscillators are then fed into a -12dB resonant low pass filter, which is controlled by another Light Dependent Resisitor. Works great with a flash light!

Features

Square, Saw, and Trautonium-style Oscillators
Light Dependent Resistor Control
Switches from High to Low frequency for each Oscillator
-12dB resonant low pass filter
Volume controls of each oscillator"

Doepfer A-126-2 Frequency Shifter and Trautonium

video upload by Vykaar Tones

"First try out of the new A-126-2 Frequency Shifter on the output of my ribbon controlled Trautonium. Signal route in to A-138n mixer is A-111 VCO2 sine output, A110 sawtooth, A110 square wave to A-163 VDIV frequency divider and A-118 white noise. Output of A-138n goes to A-104 Trautonium Formant Filter and from that to A-131 VCA controlled by pressure CV from A-198 Trautonium Ribbon Controller. The A-126-2 audio in comes from the VCA and the output goes to mixer with reverb and delays. Random CV from A-118 is occasionally added to control the pitch of the A126-2 oscillator."

Peter Pichler - Mixturtrautonium - lecture & concert @SUPERBOOTH19

Published on May 17, 2019 Superbooth Official

"A voyage to the moon"

Peter Pichler is at present the only musician worldwide who is playing the Mixturtrautonium live. The instrument is Oskar Sala´s further development of Friedrich Trautwein’s Trautonium. First presented in 1930, the Trautonium is the predecessor of the synthesizer. A wider public became aware of the Mixturtrautonium through Oskar Sala´s soundtrack-work for Hitchcocks „The Birds“.

At Superbooth19 Peter Pichler played a live-score of the documentary „ A Voyage To The Moon“ from director Manfred Durniok and Oskar Sala.

In 1974 Durniok was provided with raw film material from different NASA-Moonshots and created a unique documentary with almost unknown space-filmsequences together with Oskar Sala. Sala was scoring solely with his Mixturtrautonium.

Oskar Sala - Zeilgalerie in Frankfurt, 1993

YouTube via djaiyo.

via rustyanalog Don't miss this bit of synth history.

"From christian moeller's website, www.christian-moeller.com

Sala, a pioneer of electronic music played his Trautonium, an early electronic musical instrument invented in Berlin in 1930.
For this live performance, his concert was displayed as a gigantic video projection above the urban flow. The metal façade of the Zeilgalerie was turned into a giant TV screen in the public space."
This one originally posted at 7:19 PM, 3/2. Moving on top for a bit. Don't miss this.
See the Trautonium label directly below for more.

Update via Rick Jelliffe:
"The thing is that Sala extended the Trautonium (a playing device) with his own synthesis system: subharmonic synthesis. It is a Mixturtrautonium!

This allows much more chord-like notes to be created, with four subharmonics. So while he can only play one note at a time on the lower manual, that note goes to four subharmonic generators. He can select different sets of subharmonics (/12, /13, /14 etc) with a knee controller, if necessary. Because these can be written down, it allowed him to set up patches and replay compositions much more quickly than later modular VC systems.

The subharmonic system favours some kinds of chords (dim 7s for example), which explains some aspects of his compositions.

I have made a free VST using subharmonic synthesis that is available on the WWW. Like Sala's it has a frequency shifter, reverb and some resonators, and can switch between sets of subharmonics. The Neumixturtrautonium VST is available from lots of places on the web, and it has a sound of its own.

I believe Doepfer have a subharmonic module too, as may some other people.

Cheers
Rick Jelliffe"
