MATRIXSYNTH Review and Overview of the Novation UltraNova - Envelopes, LFO’s & Modulation Matrix

You'll find the next installment of my Novation UltaNova review here. In this round, we take a look at the UltraNova's Envelopes, LFO’s, and Modulation Matrix. Note, the link will take you directly to the start of that section. If you want to start at the beginning of the review click here. This is a long review, so to make things easier on you, and me, it's going up in sections. Two more to go!

Patch Notes #23 - Quad Turing Machine Mode in Ornament & Crime

Published on Oct 14, 2016 Voltage Control Lab

"Testing the deeper functions in Quantermain mode in Ornament & Crime, the quad turing machine mode to be precise! This is an extremely useful and exciting module.

A clock coming from Make Noise Tempi, which is sequencing the 0-Coast. The 0-Coast is routed to the Mutable Instruments Warps for some delay through the Parasites alt firmware, and on to the Malekko Mix4.

Tempi is also clocking the Malekko Varigate 4. One channel is triggering the Slope section in the 0-Coast, which is not modulating the 0-Coast, but rather shaping the kick drum routing inside the Roland Scooper which is also routed on to the Mix4.

Another channel on the Varigate is routed to trigger the Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas. All 4 channels on the Ornament & Crime are modulating functions on the BI: pitch, decay, morph and fold. All 4 channels are triggered by Tempi at the TR1 input.

Make Noise René is also receiving clock from Tempi, sending it's QCV out to the DPO, and Xgate out to the Malekko ADLFO. The DPO final out is sent to the Optomix, and then out from the mix output to the Mix4. One channel on the ADLFO is routed to the Optomix channel to open LPG, another is controlling FM depth between the oscillators on the DPO.

The Roland System 1m is played live via the Qunexus keyboard, routed out through the Aux input on the Optomix.

"I performed this a the recent Bristol Synth Meet, but the camera memory ran out and I have redone it at home.
It's an idea me and Chris are working on and should turn into a full song at some point.

The midi sync is working well now, so the Circuit is sending midi clock to the moog, then the prophet to keep the beating LFO in time, then on to the TC electronics delay to keep the echos in beat."

Sharplines - Moog Sub 37, Prophet 6 & Novation Circuit

I performed this at the recent Bristol Synth Meet, but the camera memory ran out and I have redone it at home.

My singer Chris is working out some words for this so it should develop further.

This was fun playing live as playing the moog keyboard triggered the arpeg on the Moog and the strings on the Prophet, but playing the Prophet keyboard just played the strings, so flicking between the keys with each hand produced some pleasing changes.

I'm using a control pedal on the Prophet to open the filter. The wheel on the Moog does a LFO pitch shift of oscillator 2 with it in sync mode - lovely sound."

"Could spend an evening with the synth but it was an awesome night. Tried to pull out the most but there wasn`t much time. Every sound come form the System-8 own engine and the Jupiter-8 plug-out,, just some (VW2) limiting on all.

Enjoy,

Hunart©"

Note the listing states this was essentially a Prophet-600 with multitrack controls and it has SSM filters. That is not correct. It has the same synth engine as the Multi-Trak and it uses CEM filters. The Prophet-600 also had CEM filters. The only Sequential Circuits synth to have SSM filters was the Prophet-5 Rev 1 & 2. You can see a listing of what synths used what chips on Wikipedia here.

QU-Bit Electronix Rhythm Demo ft. Chord, Octone, & Expert Sleepers Disting

Published on Oct 14, 2016 Century Sound Labs

http://www.reverb.com/shop/centurysou...

"As you can see, Rhythm can be used for much more than just drums! In this patch, channels 1 and 2 of Rhythm are triggering Expert Sleepers Distings in Envelope VCA mode. The root and 7th notes from Chord are fed through these VCAs and sent on to a final L-1 Tube VCA mixer to be combined with the Chord module. The third output of Rhythm is triggering the CV input of the tube VCA, imparting a psuedo-kick sound to the mix.

The Octone on the left is sending 1v/oct CV to Chord. It is passively multiplied using the TipTop stackable cable to the Inversion CV input on Chord, causing a pleasing detune effect from the resultant loading.

The Octone on the right is synced to the first Octone, and is triggered at 1/8th the speed. It is sequencing the pattern selection for Rhythm, so every time the 8 chord phrase comes around, it selects another different pattern to play.

The mix is then sent into the Universal Audio Apollo 8 first through the Moog LPF to add some dirt with its drive function, then onto the Neve 1073 preamp and Studer A800 tape emulator for further thickening. It is then compressed using the Fairchild 660 to add some tube glue.

On Send A is the Cooper Time Cube delay and on Send B is the EMT 140 plate reverb.

In the mixdown, the track runs through the Steven Slate VCC in RCA Tube Console mode, then through the Manley Vari-Mu compressor and Massive Passive Mastering EQ. Finally, the mix is tapped off on 7.5ips with the Ampex ATR-102 emulator and lightly limited with the A.O.M. Invisible Limiter."
