Exploring Apps 01 // Patterning Singing Bowl Experiment

Published on Oct 23, 2017 Computing.Sound

"The 'Patterning : Drum Machine' iOS app by Olympia Noise Co. sequencing singing bowl samples and a bit of tweaking.

The samples where recorded with a Zoom H5 and the XY capsule that came with it.

I really like the app.
Sadly it isn't available on Windows or Android."

Dave Smith Instruments In the Spotlight with the Mopho X4 and Fabian Almazan

You'll find the full interview at Dave Smith Instruments here.

"Recently nominated for a Grammy for his work on Terence Blanchard’s Breathless, pianist and composer Fabian Almazan found his musical roots as a child in his homeland of Havana where he first became involved in the classical piano tradition. When his parents could not afford to pay for private piano lessons and having migrated to Miami, Florida, pianist Conchita Betancourt was gracious enough to impart free lessons. Thanks to Mrs. Betancourt’s exceeding generosity, Fabian was able to audition for the New World School of the Arts High School in Miami where he studied from 1998 to 2002. In 2002 Fabian was selected for the piano chair in the National 2002 Grammy High School Jazz Combo. The following year, Almazan attended the newly up and running Brubeck Institute fellowship program based in northern California where he studied with Mark Levine and performed with Dave Brubeck and Christian McBride. In 2003, Fabian moved to New York City to study with Kenny Barron at the Manhattan School of Music..."

Malekko Heavy Industry - Gate Delay

Published on Oct 23, 2017 DivKidVideo

"Here's the fantastic Gate Delay from the lovely people at Malekko Heavy Industry. This is a totally awesome and exciting module that I imagine many looked at and thought it wasn't for them as a more utilitarian piece of kit. But it can be incredibly musical. With options for input normalising or normalising of outputs to create rhythmic musical canon effects with your gates and options for tying gate delay times to the clock or going unquantized it really is ace and incredibly fast to get things moving in interesting ways. It's a lovely pairing for the Varigate and/or Voltage Block but of course works entirely independent as seen here.

00:26 Overview / features
- all modes
- timing settings
- ins and outs
- musical canons
- quantised / unquantised delays

02:50 Patch 1 "splitting melodies"
- simple sequences turned "pseudo two voice"
- unquantised gate delays
- CV inputs (knobs become attenuators)

05:49 Patch 2 "customs flams / drum placement"
- mode 2 normalising inputs
- time mode 2 "unquantised but clocked to 1 bar in length"
- placing beats anywhere in the bar
- customs flams between percussion
- bursts from the mix output

10:17 Patch 3 "cascading chord tones"
- mode 3 cascading outs to ins
- musical "canon" in the rhythm
- quantised delay placement (time mode 3)
- breaking the normalising"

3 Modules #28: Maths, Clouds, Ripples

Published on Oct 23, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"Turn off the lights and get ready for some sedate dark ambient tones! I love this slow, pulsating movement, and the warm, heavy thud of Ripples' sine sub. I also like the effect of modulating Clouds' dry/wet blend here: it serves a dual purpose as a VCA for the bass notes and a sort of side-chain compression for the granular sounds.

Note: this recording contains a very wide range of frequencies, from very low bass to piercingly high treble. I recommend using good headphones or full-range speakers to hear it all.

Patch notes:
I'm using Ripples as an oscillator (with some occasional self-FM for richer harmonics) and feeding little snippets of sound into Clouds' buffer, which stays frozen most of the time here. I then tune Ripples to a nice bass frequency and leave the rest up to the modulation that's controlling Clouds.

Maths channel 4 (slow, looping envelope) is controlling Clouds' position, density and blend, which is the dry/wet mix in this case. This is set up so that the wet mix will quickly drop, letting Ripples' bass tone through, and then slowly drift back up to 100% wet while the density gets sparser (moving from counter clockwise towards noon setting) and the position moves forward through the frozen buffer.

Maths channel 1 (quicker looping envelope) is modulating Clouds' texture and size parameter, to create some interesting movements and sonic artefacts.

Occasionally I'll manually change Clouds' pitch setting for variation. I also load different buffers throughout the recording – both by unfreezing and recording new sound from Ripples, and by loading stored buffers from Clouds' memory. Actually, one of those recorded buffers contained something I'd stored forever ago, and I have a feeling it's sampled from Rings, but it sounded so pleasant I couldn't resist using it anyway. The other buffers contain only sounds from Ripples, that I recorded while setting up the patch.

Thanks for watching!"
