Prairie Wires Modular (PWM) gives signal boost to Prairie-based experimental audio artists

Inaugural event 'Drone at the Global Market' brings experimental music spotlight to Brandon Manitoba

Brandon, Manitoba, Canada -- Prairie Wires Modular (PWM) is a new music and art organization created to shine a spotlight on emerging Prairie-based experimental artists with a focus on modular synthesis, experimental electronic music and sound art.

PWM’s inaugural event Drone at the Global Market on May 25, 2019 will fill downtown Brandon with some new and interesting sounds. Organized as part of International Drone Day celebrations, the event —beginning at 2:00pm at the Global Market (1215 Rosser Avenue)— will showcase local artists experimenting with drone music including Moon Shape Noise (modular synthesizer), Jeff Smith (guitar) and Abby-Jade (cello duo). The event is free, so bring a chair, blanket or yoga matt to relax and enjoy the drones. Attendees are also encouraged to participate in the Drone Jam at the end of the performances. Program and map information can be found at http://www.prairiewires.ca/droneday

“The recent resurgence in popularity of modular and semi-modular synthesis is exciting. It’s evident in large cities around the world, it’s all across the internet and in the air waves,” said Prairie Wires Modular founder Brendon Ehinger. “Prairie Wires Modular is bringing these synthesizer happenings to Brandon, first with Drone at the Global Market and then throughout the summer with even more local events planned. Great things are happening on the Canadian Prairies.”

Recognizing the unique intersection between art and experimental music that modular and semi-modular synthesis represents, Winnipeg expat, electronic musician and graphic designer Brendon Ehinger established PWM to promote and present artists, musicians and events in the Prairies. Based in Brandon, Manitoba, PWM is positioned to serve as a hub and meeting place for artists from across the prairies. Situated almost half way between Winnipeg, MB, and Regina, SK, and with an airport servicing direct flights between Brandon and Calgary, AB, Brandon is an accessible location and a logical centre for Prairie modular enthusiasts to congregate.

In addition to Drone at the Global Market on May 25, PWM has a two day Modular Meet-up planned for June 14-15 which will feature free concerts from regional artists, a public open house and modular synth show and tell, and more. Make Noise X-PAN Tricks: Dual Pannable VCA

Published on May 22, 2019 MAKEN0ISE

"The X-PAN is a powerful compact signal routing toolbox! There are many ways to patch it. Check out this and other upcoming 'X-PAN Tricks' for some ideas.

If you patch only one input of an X-PAN channel’s crossfader, it can be used as a pannable VCA. Here we'll do this on both channels and supplement the sound with some reverb in the Aux inputs."

Published on May 22, 2019 DivKidVideo

"Vaclav of BASTL Instruments is now performing as Toyota Vangelis (great name!) and his new instrument and module builds are serving him as a life performer with desktop units, vocals, CV/audio controlled lights and Eurorack modular synths. There's an update to the BASTL Skis, new mutes module, Thyme based looping and FX and some nice auto-tune vocoder vibe vocals from the live performance. After a quick run down of the new gear and the live set up we got a performance - ace!"

16 output CV & gate sequencer 'USTA' from Frap Tools // Superbooth 2019

Published on May 22, 2019 DivKidVideo

"USTA is the new sequencer from Frap Tools that offers 4 channels and 4 outputs per channel. Those 4 outputs are 2 CVs (definable pitch or unquantised voltage) and 2 gates (triggers, gates, ratchets etc). It looks like a simple interface for potential complex and musical patterns, chain patterns, variations, musical random with probability and variance control ... it looks great! Frap Tools call it the "voltage score" and with musical notation examples on the site I'm excited to see this unit out in the wild."

Korg Volca Modular with Pam's New Workout by ALM Busy Circuits

Published on May 22, 2019 BlankFor_ms

"The Pam's New Workout (a stellar modulation source module) is sending an LFO to the Volca Modular which is controlling wavefold and clock speed. The Volca's 2nd function generator is modulating the reverb level and length. Through the video I adjust the other parameters to explore the tonal possibilities of the Volca. Let me know your thoughts!"
