Yamaha Portasound PSS-580 FM keyboard demo - "Limes"

Published on Aug 4, 2019 Alfonse

Yamaha Portasound PSS-580 MusicStation keyboard (1989)
The PSS-580 is a relative of the 480, 680, and 780, with basically all the same chips and most of the same features in common. The 680/780 boast a couple more features, but the editable FM synthesizer parameters are common to all these keyboards, with control from the front panel of the keyboard over attack, decay, frequency, feedback and modulation for 2 operators.

All sounds you hear in the track were made using the PSS-580 and recorded to a DAW, where I added compression, EQ, reverb, delay and chorus as required. I sampled individual drum hits from the percussion section, to allow fresh beats to be built, rather than using the rhythms found on the PSS-580 itself.

The aim of these videos is to see what you can create using sounds from ageing home keyboards together with current production tools.

"It is working 100% and fully functional. Most of these turn up on ebay in terrible condition and usually missing some (if not all) of their slider caps. Look at the pics for its condition. I was shocked when I received it in such good shape and I have taken good care of it. Unfortunately I've run into financial trouble and have to let most of my beloved gear go in order to cover unexpected expenses. My loss is your gain. :-("

"This all plays OK, except each F” – which are slightly lowerin volume. In addition the 4 buttons to the Left hand side either remain on oroff – which can be annoying, as you either get the effects or not!"

"All working as it should apart from two minor but workable quirks. The volume slider if pushed to the left can cut out but this is easily remidied if you hold it to the right when moving it, or if you want to set and forget, stick a bit of card to the left of the knob. The other quirk is that the arp latch button can be temperamental when pressed but then it's an old synth and hasn't caused me any issues when playing it."

"If you're clicking you know how rare and desirable these synths are - the all-black Ninja edition of the Sidstation was the most limited production run. They go for a lot - there's currently another "Ninja" on Reverb for $1,886 (+ $125 shipping), so mine is priced to move at $400 less. Only 50 were ever made - unlikely never see another one of these for anything close to this price! Has blue LEDs and looks / sounds awesome.

The Sidstation is the guts of a Commodore 64 with an analog filter and custom software to bring out the power of the original, NOS chipset. Three syncable oscillators produce 8bit waveforms, with wavetables, ring modulation etc. Can make classic video game tones, but can do much more - has a much more raw and powerful sound than a standard analog synth.

Excellent condition sonically and cosmetically. Comes with original power supply, and you can download the manual from Elektron - who went on to make the MachineDrum, Analog Four, Digitakt etc., so they are still going strong."

"Not the finicky J-Wire model...
Nor the dreadful membrane version...

This lovely synth has been retrofitted with a NEW Fatar keybed, now it plays like a dream!

Very good condition, very few scratches and scuffs on this guy.

Plays/works great"

"This is a technique i've been using for awhile, it really helps when performing while improvising. Grab something you like, repeat it while you figure out something else that works well too."

"EarthQuaker debuted their first eurorack module, the Afterneath, at EarthQuaker Day 2019 and Richard was able to get one in a case and try it out with a pair of Voltage Labs. This is one of his first experiments. A nice lo-fi sequence to balance the party atmosphere of the event."

2019/07 - Sad Anime Jazz

Published on Aug 4, 2019 Stereoping

"A little composition exercise which leaded into sth. like an Anime soundtrack. Imagine a melancholic person sitting by the sea or gazing into a wide landscape in late summer. Simple setup: Kawai K4 (Guitar) and Roland JV-1080 (Piano & Horns). Drums from Alesis HR-16 and a midified Hammond AutoVario 64. Besides rare superimpositions of gear, the Video just contains the progressing FL Studio playlist digging through the midi-clips containing the notes being fired to the synths and drummachines. (In case you wonder... 2-4 notes were changed after recording the screencast) Enjoy :-)"
