Panoptigan Celeste Improvisation

Published on Sep 27, 2019

"A short improvisation using the Panoptigan and the Optigan Celeste disc.

The Panoptigan is a modern instrument designed by Quilter Labs to play Optigan, Orchestron and Panoptigan discs.
Just out of the frame the left, the keys on the MIDI keyboard control the loops that would have been on the "chord buttons" of the Optigan.

On the right side of the keyboard, the keys control the "special effect" buttons of the Optigan. There are also keys that control start/stop of the disc, and forward/reverse. In between is Orchestron cello.

I start the piece with the disc playing backwards, then switch to forwards.

No external audio processing added (though the Panoptigan has some great built-in effects).

"I borrowed my wife's soprano ukulele for this one! There are several uke samples - heavily Octatrack-mangled - over loops cooked in Logic Pro mainly from Omnisphere. Drum samples also constructed in Logic."

Processing Drum Machines with a 70s Boss KM-60 Mixer

Published on Sep 27, 2019 Alex Ball

"A little spin through a Boss KM-60 from 1979. Like many pieces from this era, people have subsequently found uses for them that weren’t what they were originally intended for.

In the case of the KM-60, it’s since found a second life as a device for processing and mangling drums, which I’m demonstrating here.

I particularly liked what it did to a TR-707 with a TB-303 in tow.

Apologies for the voice sound quality in places, I was experimenting with a lapel mic for the first time and inadvertently had a setting on it that added an extreme (and horrible) digital compressor/limiter. I couldn’t be bothered to re-record the entire thing all over again, so it is what it is. Sorry.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the demo and thanks for watching."

Erica Synths EMS SYNTHI Inspired SYNTRX

"Since its beginnings Erica Synths has promoted experimental electronic music and has developed instruments that enable musicians to explore it.

When it comes to standalone instruments, we think, one of most encouraging instruments in experimental music was Synthi AKS, so we teamed up with engineers from Riga Technical University to develop a synthesizer with a user interface inspired by Synthi AKS.

SYNTRX [sintrex] is developed from scratch all analogue synthesizer (no part of schematics is cloned from Synthi AKS) with digitally controlled patch matrix. Unlike most of patch matrixes around, that mechanically connect signals, our 16x16 matrix utilizes 32 (!!!) 8 channel analogue switch ICs AS16M1 (made in Latvia, Alfa RPAR) and is a mixer/buffered multiple with 3 level attenuation (gain 1, 0,6 and 0,3) in connection points. It has 256 patch memory, automatic patch switching in performance mode or via MIDI messages.

SYNTRX has 3 highly accurate VCOs that track great over 8 octaves, noise generator with “colour” filter, resonant VCF, ring modulator, spring reverb, looping envelope generator, joystick controller, input amplifier with adjustable gain for microphone to line level signals, 3 VCAs, output signal filter, analogue CV/audio signal level indicator and built in speakers. Extra features, not found on Synthi AKS, are Sample & Hold circuit with individual clock, octave switch for VCO1, synchronization of VCO2, AD mode on the envelope generator, as well as MIDI that accepts CV, Gate, Modulation wheel messages and program change messages for the matrix control. The SYNTRX comes in aluminium enclosure with ash tree side panels.

We believe, it will inspire users to explore the space and travel to previously undiscovered audible realms.

Limited run of SYNTRX will be available at the end of 2019 priced at 2500EUR (VAT excluded) .
