Realistic Concertmate 660 (aka Casio CT360) keyboard demo - "Blue Edge"

Published on Oct 18, 2019 Alfonse

"Realistic Concertmate 660 (aka Casio CT360) keyboard (1988)

All sounds you hear in the track were made using the Concertmate 660 and run through various single effects pedals (TC Electronic Sub Up octaver for adding some depth to bass notes, the very synth-friendly Yamaha SDS CH-10MII chorus pedal, and the Boss DD7 digital delay). Parts were recorded to a DAW, where I added compression, EQ, and reverb as required. I sampled individual drum hits from slowed-down rhythms, to allow fresh beats to be built, rather than using the rhythms found on the 660 itself.

The aim of these videos is to see what you can create using sounds from ageing home keyboards together with current production tools. This one was a challenge, in all honesty, as the sounds are generally a bit thin and dull, but there was something about that Violin patch that felt right for a synthwave-inspired track...

"This is a live Performance of 'Old Light' composed by Dave Valdez with visuals by Ellie Pritts, it is performed by Dave, Ellie and Zachary Paul. We filmed this performance on 10/9/2019 at Substrate Gallery where Ellie Pritts' show Spectral Horizon was opening.

Ellie Pritts was playing her Cello through an Old Blood Noise Endeavors Dark Star V2. Zachary Paul was playing his violin through a Strymon Volante and Red Panda Particle 2. Dave Valdez was using a Chase Bliss Mood with his tape loops.

Qu-Bit Electronix Prism

"We check out the Prism multidimensional signal-processing module from Qu-Bit Electronix, with an assist from Big Merp.

0:04 Introduction
0:38 Basic functionality with steady-state Sputnik Dual Oscillator as input
2:15 Demo with Dual Oscillator controlled by Make Noise Rene Sequencer
3:31 Using Arturia MicroFreak as source
4:14 Clock mode (synchronizing delay times to external clock)
5:00 Using MicroFreak pressure as CV control from Prism decimation function
5:10 Big Merp crashes the party

'Prism is a multidimensional signal processor that creates a framework for the spectral metamorphosis of any input signal. This stereo audio buffer can be navigated through on 3 axes, each of which provides a different sonic journey through its array of time based controls.

The X and Z planes are home to a flexible delay line capable of long clocked delays, slapback echo, or comb filtered vocoder-esque timbres. On the Y axis is the decimate control. This sets the audio fidelity of the buffer by manipulating the sample rate and bit depth of the output. A state variable filter with configurable low pass, high pass, and band pass outputs can be enabled at the beginning or end of the signal chain providing yet another dimension of spectral transformation. And thanks to its digital architecture, the current buffer contents can be locked in place with the Freeze control, creating glitch and beat repeat effects which can be synced to an external clock source.'

The Day of the Dead Vult Giveaway

Published on Oct 18, 2019 Omri Cohen

"Vultari and Boomstick are 2 new modules from Vult, an oscillator, and a filter. Celebrating their release and the upcoming Day of the Dead, Vult and I are doing another giveaway :) Here are all of the details:

- Build a patch in VCV Rack using Vultari as the only sound source and Boomstick as the only filter. Both are from Vult and both are available for free here - https://vcvrack.com/plugins.html#vult...
- You can use any module you like, free or commercial, virtual or hardware, as long as it's not used as a sound source (no noise, no samples, no other oscillators), and as long as it's not used as a filter (no EQ modules also). If you're not sure if a module is a filter or a sound source, feel free to write to me and ask.
- Record a video of the patch, for example with the VCV recorder module, and upload the video to YouTube.
- Send the link to dotdvult19@gmail.com
- Today is Friday, the 18th of October, and the deadline for submissions is Thursday, October 31st.
- Only one submission per person.
- The winner will get all of the Vult commercial collections. Here's more about Vult - https://modlfo.github.io/VultModules/
- Feel free to build a patch in any genre/style you want.
- If you're not sure about something, please ask.
- Good luck and have fun!

"Following in the tradition of Evolution and Morpheus, LINNAEUS represents yet another Dave Rossum innovation in filter technology.

LINNAEUS is a stereo state variable filter that provides the unique ability to linearly modulate its resonant frequency through zero into negative frequency, while maintaining stability. With extensive voltage control of nearly every parameter, Linnaeus lets you manipulate the filter’s natural response curve in new ways, to create both subtle and dramatic timbral effects. And with a “one-knob-per-parameter” interface, LINNAEUS inspires sonic creativity that invites (and rewards) real-time interaction.

LINNAEUS’s cutoff/resonant frequency is exponentially voltage controllable from sub-audio to ultrasonic frequencies, while its resonant gain (Q) is exponentially voltage controllable from 0dB to greater than 60dB.

LINNAEUS’s channel output response characteristics are independently and continuously variable from Lowpass, through Bandpass, Highpass and Notch, to Low and High Shelving characteristics. Voltage control of the response characteristics are independently selectable for each of the two channels.

The linear thru-zero modulation is provided by an integrated modulation oscillator and/or an External Linear FM modulation input.

The voltage-controllable modulation oscillator can track the filter’s exponential frequency or operate independently. The modulation oscillator’s output waveform is continuously variable from Off through Sine, Triangle, and Sawtooth, to Square. The modulation oscillator output is summed with the external linear FM input and applied to the modulation index VCA, which controls the linear thru-zero modulation index from zero to 8X. The modulation index is, of course, also voltage controllable.

What’s with the egg?

Late in the beta testing process, our good friend and tester, Chris Meyer, raised the possibility of alternative behavior that would let LINNAEUS function as a self-contained (i.e., no input required) stereo oscillator and/or FM percussion voice with some really powerful timbral capabilities.

While we were initially hesitant to try to shoehorn the new functions into the existing interface, once Dave had prototyped them, it was clear to us all that they were just too cool not to include. So we’ve provided them in the form of alternate firmware accessed by pressing and holding the Egg button.

LINNAEUS is 16HP wide and 25mm deep.

Power requirements (max): 155mA +12V, 36mA -12V. Reverse polarity protected."
