Hatsuyume - Nymphes + Noodlebox (Jamuary 2022)

"I read somewhere recently that in Japanese, Hatsuyume is the first dream of the new year, and that the outcome of that will bring you corresponding fortune or disfortune. I quite liked that idea, and so called the first 'jam' I did of 2022 after that.

I wanted to put together something using a couple of my latest acquisitions, the Dreadbox Nymphes, and the Sixty Four Pixels Noodlebox. I bought both of these from Signal Sounds back in December. To be honest, I only really discovered the Noodlebox thanks to Signal Sounds. They are my favourite synth shop, very nice people, and local to me in Glasgow. I personally recommend them if you're in the market for new gear. https://www.signalsounds.com/

Dreadbox Nymphes - 6 Voice analog Sonic LAB Review

"Dreadbox Nymphes was unveiled at Superbooth in September and is now heading out to customers and retailers, which is no mean feat given the difficulty in the component supply chain. The Nymphes is a synth built to be available and to a budget. Even so, a 6 voice (VCO) analog poly at £500 is a pretty impressive achievement.

Roland JX-08 vs JX-8P | There will be blood...

"Can the new Roland JX-08 Boutique replace the classic JX-8P synthesizer?
More polyphony, more memory, a sequencer, arpeggiator and more. Is this enough for the 08 to beat the classic? Can the sound match up?

The JX-08 has no Sysex abilities, so it cannot import patches nor be used as a controller for the 8P. It cannot do Unison detune, so forget those extra fat patches. The envelopes are very different, and the filter does not sound the same.
You can dial in different effects settings, including parameters to mimic the classic 8P chorus, but again it's not enough to make the 08 sound good enough in my opinion.

I've taken all my custom made patches for the 8P and programmed them into the 08 and I've taken all parameters into consideration when doing this, but since so much of the sound engine of the 08 sounds so different, it's impossible to get any exact match for a lot of sounds. Some are easier than others, while some sound very different even if the settings match up, if you know what I mean.
The demo track uses these patches. They're on both machines and are triggered over MIDI. All external reverb is applied the same to both machines. I use only chorus from the 8P and 08 respectively, set up to match. The PG-8X has the 8Ps sysex loaded into it.

Another big annoyance of the JX-08 is there's no way to power this except over USB. This is a big mistake as it means ground hum and noise you'll have to use Di-boxes to get a clean recording signal. Not all of us love USB, I hate USB myself and want as little of this as possible.

1969 R.A. Moog 1p Modular Synthesizer System

"This modular system is synthesizer history!! It came from a local university that sold it in auction. It looks to be well taken care of, and dust was really the only thing to clean up. These Moog cabinets were made in 1969, as can be seen on the back of the modules, that was written in by hand. Due to the painted markings on the front of one of the lids, and the pasted paper on the inside of another lid, I have to believe that this was once Gershon Kingsley's system, or at least it was in his studio in New York. I cannot confirm nor deny the truth of that assumption, but super cool! I put a picture up from a New York Times article about him. In any case, there are no cables of any kind. And I know the power supply should be rebuilt before anything. This could be a perfectly working modular system, or it may need some work. By the looks of it, it shouldn't be too far off from rocking. I am not a technician though. There is a green switch missing, a hinge connector is missing on one lid, and both handles are missing from the tops of the cabinets. All can be seen in the pictures."

Why This Rare Soviet Drum Machine Still Kicks in 2022

"When I first saw the Formanta UDM, also know as Rokton, I was intrigued - a Simmons-like drum synthesizer with cheesy preset rhythms? Add to that the typical Soviet "they make tanks here too" look and I knew I had to explore it. I was surprised by how bleepy and klonky it sounded once I turned of the preset drums. It has the energy of early Warp and Rephlex records, with a dusty and dry tone that yet goes low. The integrated rhythms became suddenly amazing, as I programmed the sounds to be different. I never heard a tango like that from a preset.

Sadly, I could not learn much about the history of this machine. There are just a few pages on it out there, so I hope this video can be start for more information. For me, I set the goal to visit all the Soviet production sites, once the world is traversable again, and find out more. Drop any info you have below, I am very curious to learn more and apologize for any factual errors I might have made."
