Podcast 292: Ross Healy (VICMOD)

Published on Sep 8, 2019 20Objects

"I think I've seen the handle VICMOD bouncing around the internet forever. I've also been listening to the music of Cray for a while, too. But only recently did I actually put 2 and 2 together to realize that this was the same person!

I've always like the Cray music for its breadth and honesty - it really sounded like a person's inner voice, rather than whatever a synth might naturally produce. And in talking with him, it is clear that this is his primary objective: heartfelt improvisation and sound design.

From his earliest work with a janky 486 computer to his current obsession with Omnisphere (with Buchla, Serge and Eurorack in-between), Ross has exercised almost any machine you can imagine. The result is a person that is looking to be surprised by his environment - and is constantly searching for those surprises.

After our chat, Ross was apparently spurred into digging into the archives, and has release the following for the listeners:

You can also check out the whole VICMOD label catalog here:

And, as Ross himself says, check out his work on discogs.com to dig into more of his past:

Enjoy!"

Resonant - Featured Artist Series (Cray - Ross Healy)

Published on Apr 26, 2017 brassmonkey

Love the analogy to painting at the very end. It's an interesting concept - reproducing set tracks vs. exploration.

"We caught up with Ross Healy (Cray) in the first of our short interviews featuring the artists who are performing at our next Resonant show on the 7th May 2017 in Melbourne, Australia.

Mungo d0 Karplus n' Comb Patch

Mungo Enterprises d0 Karplus-Strong Published on May 5, 2013 MungoEnterprises

"At today's Vicmod meet John from Mungo patched up some string synthesis type sounds combining Karplus Strong techniques AND Comb Filtering on each channel of the same d0 delay unit (with lots of feedback on each incorporated in with m0 mixer modules). The patch evolved further to include dub wobble filter modulation and distortion with the f0 filter module but I did something wrong with the camera and that bit didn't record... sorry :("

Sample and Reverb

YouTube via macbethsynthesizers | December 20, 2010 |

"Well here is a vid of me playing with a projected 5U Mk1 MacBeth Voltage Controlled Spring Reverberation module that will also feature Voltage Controlled Stereo Panning. I came across a lovely patch this morning using Sample and Hold from my analogue keyboard controller. It has two LFOs- I took a direct output from LFO 2 - S&H- and fed the control signal into the VC input of the spring reverb. So! I thought I'd record this stuff!
We have two Mk1 VCOs going into the Mk1 Filter 'A'- and they go into the VC Reverb. I'm also playing a Mk1 Oscillator 'B' into a Mk1 Filter 'B'- that is doing the bass stuff. There is my Korg CX-3 doing the organ stuff. All sounds abit strange..........but I hope you enjoy! Ken M"
