Roland Introduces the D-05 - Boutique Version of the Roland D-50

Published on Sep 9, 2017 RolandChannel

It may not have all the sliders of the concept module posted here, but it does have the engine. An interesting side note is that this is Roland's first synth to feature their "newly developed Digital Circuit Behavior (DCB)". The second video explains what this is. It is interesting. I always assumed digital was digital and easily ported. I do know that DACs (digital to analog converters) can have an impact on the sound you hear from a synth, and one of the reasons why many prefer the sound of the original DX7 vs. newer hardware. Nord/Clavia also advertised their new DACs on the Nord Lead 2 allowing for a cleaner sound if I remember correctly. All that said, it is interesting to think that Roland took time to work on their DCB technology to get a sound closer to the original, vs. just porting the digital engine. I'm looking forward to A/B tests with the original.

Roland D-05 Boutique Linear Synthesizer Sound Module - Overview and Demo

Published on Sep 9, 2017 Musician's Friend

And the press release:

"New Roland Boutique module recreation of the renowned D-50 Linear Synthesizer from the 1980s

Los Angeles, CA, September 9, 2017 — Roland announces the D-05 Linear Synthesizer, the latest addition to the growing Roland Boutique electronic instrument lineup. The D-05 is a compact reproduction of Roland’s D-50 Linear Synthesizer from the late 1980s, one of the most influential synthesizers ever produced. Combining the newly developed Digital Circuit Behavior (DCB) sound generator with the actual samples used in the original instrument, the D-05 delivers the D-50’s iconic, highly recognizable sounds with complete authenticity, backed by all the modern conveniences of the compact and affordable Roland Boutique module format.

Released in 1987, the D-50 was Roland’s very first all-digital synthesizer. Powered by the revolutionary Linear Arithmetic (LA) Synthesis engine, the instrument’s unique mix of sampled attacks and synthesized sustaining waveforms – plus built-in chorus, reverb/delay, and EQ for studio-quality polish – made it a must-have synth for musicians around the world. The D-50’s bold new sounds and beautifully crafted presets inspired artists everywhere and quite literally dominated the popular music, film soundtracks, and commercial jingles of the era. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this giant in the history of synthesis, Roland presents an inspiring recreation that brings the genuine D-50 experience to the music creators of today and beyond.

At the D-05’s core lies the first synthesizer with Roland’s DCB technology. Paired with the exact PCM attack and loop samples that were so vital to the D-50 sound, the D-05 precisely recreates every tonal nuance in stunning detail. The user interface is totally authentic as well, with the familiar D-50 panel layout and many direct-access controls. Even the all-important D-50 joystick is included, allowing users to smoothly morph between different mixes of Upper and Lower Tones in real time.

The D-05 also includes many modern enhancements not available with the original D-50. The 64-step polyphonic sequencer is ideal for performance and music creation and offers the ability to sequence shuffle and gate timing along with tempo and patch changes. There’s also a built-in arpeggiator for adding movement to the D-05’s already evocative LA Synthesis sounds.

Like all Roland Boutique modules, the D-05 is extremely portable, runs on USB bus power or batteries, and functions as a USB audio/MIDI interface for performing and producing with a computer. It also includes a built-in speaker for monitoring the sound in mobile situations. When mounted in the optional K-25m Keyboard Unit, the D-05 can be used as a compact, all-in-one synth with 25 velocity-sensitive keys."

New Dtronics DT-01 Controller for the Roland Boutique D-05, D-50, & D-550

A knob box for your Roland D-05, D-50, & D-550. On a personal note, I recently picked up a D-05 and was thinking about selling it due to the deep menu diving. That and there is no central editing per patch. The D-05 and D-50 are kind of like four synths in one - two "Partials" with an "Upper" and "Lower" voice each for a total of four sources that you edit independently. There is no central filter, no central envelopes, etc., so you are stuck menu diving to edit each part. Think of it like each oscillator having it's own full set of synth parameters - powerful, but a true pain to edit.  Yes you can get the hang of it, but there is no way to avoid the number of additional steps it takes to get to parameters.  This controller appears to solve that problem. It comes in at 299 euro which currently equates to about 339 USD. For those on a budget, Coffeeshopped makes an editor for Patch Base on the iPad.

Details via Dtronics:

"Dtronics DT-01 for Roland Boutique D-05/D-50/D-550

Roland Boutique D-05 Walkthrough with Legowelt

Published on Sep 11, 2017 RolandChannel

"In this video, producer Legowelt takes a closer look at some of the unique features of the new Roland Boutique D-05 Linear Synthesizer.

The D-05 includes many modern enhancements not available with the original D-50. The 64-step polyphonic sequencer is ideal for performance and music creation, and offers the ability to sequence shuffle and gate timing along with tempo and patch changes. You can create, save and recall up to 64 patterns. There’s also a built-in arpeggiator for adding movement to the D-05’s already evocative LA Synthesis sounds.

Plus, the D-05 features all of the sounds from the complete D-50 Sound Library featured in the rare D-50 Memory Cards. There are six Preset Banks and eight User banks for a combined total of nearly 900 sounds! All instantly available at the press of a button.

Every detail of the original has been carefully crafted from the Structure graphics on the panel, to the joystick for editing and tone mixing. This attention has carried through to the implementation of the same PCM samples and 16-voice polyphony as the original D-50"

"Swagger" with Roland Boutique D-05, SH-01a, TR-08, JU-06, JX-03, and JP-08

Published on Oct 21, 2017

"'Swagger' with Roland Boutique D-05, SH-01a, TR-08, JU-06, JX-03, and JP-08
Well, I just bought the Roland D-05 and added it to my boutique collection. In this tune, I wanted to feature some Roland Boutique synthesizers. Here's how I created the song. First I programmed the TR-08 drum patterns and fills. Next I loaded up a sequence into the SH-01a. I had the TR-08 trigger the SH-01a's sequencer for the BASS line. Next I added a harmony with the D-05 on an arp type patch. Then I had the JU-06 pluck a string part. The D-05 also played Digital Native patch for some extra ear candy. The JX-03 provided the string swells and the JP-08 was used for the solos. It's really nice to have the D-05 join the boutiques. I'm surprise how well they all sound. Thanks for listening. Please share, subscribe, and leave feedback. Take care, Sam."

Roland D-05 - My D-50 Pad Sounds, some old, some new (dry/no fx)

Published on Jan 13, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"This is a partial remake of my old D-50 Pads & Strings video, after importing the patches I create for it into the D-05. There are also some new sounds from 7:25 created in the D-05 using the free Chrome editor. It sounds a little brighter than my old D-50, most probably due to the cleaner audio output. Apparently there's a function on the D-05 to mimic the noisy output of the original, but I think I'll pass... thanks...
No external effects were used, so all you can hear is D-05."

Live coding: Roland D-05 and the Empress Zoia

Published on Apr 12, 2020 Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) live codes the Roland D-05 using ORCA while processing the audio with the Empress Zoia. ORCA is an esoteric programming language used for creating sequencers live, it is the perfect companion to the Roland D-05's sounds and fun to use joystick. The Empress Zoia spices up the legendary synthesizer with it's creative, customizable, modern, and modular mono or stereo effects.

From Roland:
'Released in 1987, the Roland D-50 Linear Synthesizer is easily one of the most influential keyboards ever made. This revolutionary instrument helped define the sound of the late ‘80s with its instantly recognizable mix of sampled attacks and synthesized sustaining waveforms, plus built-in chorus, reverb, and EQ. It’s the basis of classic tracks in a wide range of genres including synth pop, new wave, new jack, and R&B, and can be heard in countless film scores of the era. With the Roland D-05, you get the iconic sound and dedicated control of the D-50 in a modern device that perfectly recreates the legendary synth down to its finest details.'

Order Roland D-05 here:
https://bit.ly/roland_d05

From Empress:
'The ZOIA is basically a modular synthesizer in pedal form. Instead of being a delay effect or tremolo, the ZOIA provides the modules necessary to build a delay or tremolo from the ground up. But since you're the one building it, you can make it do whatever you want. With the ZOIA you can build your own custom effects, synthesizers, midi controllers, and virtual pedal boards. And to make life a little easier, we've created modules for all your standard guitar effects. So for instance, if you want a phaser, you can just plop down a phaser. You don't have to break out the textbooks to learn that they're built out of all-pass filters. (Of course, if you're a nerd like us, you can use the ZOIA to build them out of all-pass filters).'

Roland D-05 & an old D-50 patch revisited

Published on Aug 13, 2018 DreamsOfWires

"This won't be of interest to everyone, musically or otherwise, and I tend not to go into personal details in my video descriptions, but for this one I'll make an exception: In 2011 I owned an original D-50 for a while, and some of the patches I created for it are among my earliest videos on this channel. I'd not long discovered that my father, who I lived with, had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was only 60. It was the night before what I knew would be his final birthday and I had a blank birthday card in front of me. I thought 'what can I possibly write to a dying man?' I was too distraught to write anything. Then, for whatever reason, I switched on the D-50 and tinkered around on a patch I'd just created for it. I found the result comforting somehow, so I recorded it right there. I then uploaded a video containing that recording shortly after, and it's remained on my channel ever since.

It's quite unremarkable as a piece of music, and I never told the story behind it to anyone until now, but it's of personal value to me, and this channel has become much more personal to me since that time, both in the music I make for it, and because of the words of support and encouragement I've received on here over the last few years, so I feel able to share it. From innocent beginnings this channel has gradually become much more than I'd imagined it would.

When the D-05 was released I immediately thought of my old D-50 patches, which I'd backed up to a sysex file, and wanted to revisit them, along with this recording. I used the D-50 Librarian app on a PC back in the day, which also works with the D-05 and allowed me to upload these old patches to it. I'll make some more videos with the instrument soon I expect.

Location video is of Long Beach, CA and some other beach/pier south of LA.
Recorded into AUM on an iPad. No external effects, just pure D-05."

Legowelt Artist Patches for Roland Boutique D-05 Linear Synthesizer

Published on Oct 15, 2017 RolandChannel

"Legowelt, a.k.a Danny Wolfers, is a one-of-a-kind synthesist who has created his own musical path that does not align with genres nor tradition. All Legowelt productions are filled with head-turning moments only capable through his wizardry of all things synthesizer.

We had the pleasure of sharing with him the Roland Boutique D-05 Linear Synthesizer - a compact reproduction of the Roland D-50 from the late 1980s, one of the most influential synthesizers ever produced.

In a matter of days, Legowelt had created a bank of 64 Artist Patches that could only come from his unique, creative space. This bank is a mix of punchy, percussive patches (suited to the D-05 in-built sequencer and arpeggiator) with dreamy, ambient pads to suit anything from deep techno to lo-fi hip-hop.

These patches have been made available for free for all Roland Boutique D-05 users. Click on the link below to download and add to your own sounds."
