Livecoding the Elektron Analog 4MKII with ORCΛ

EZBOT

I love the Analog 4MKII. It sounds amazing and has awesome performance features. It works works wonderfully with ORCA despite it only having 4 tracks to work with. Fortunately multi-mapping is relatively easy to do and allows you to play drums and in this example chords as well.

Ambient Melodies ~ 32 Channel Shift Register in ORCΛ

EZBOT

"I spent a few days tinkering in ORCA until I felt I had perfected the shift register with help from Echophon. This is an ambient piece using four eight channel shift-registers. Each shift register stack is controlling a value: NOTE, OCTAVE, VELOCITY, and GATE LENGTH.

Orca is an esoteric programming language designed to quickly create procedural sequencers, in which every letter of the alphabet is an operation, where lowercase letters operate on bang, uppercase letters operate each frame.

This application is not a synthesizer, but a flexible livecoding environment capable of sending MIDI, OSC & UDP to your audio/visual interfaces, like Ableton, Renoise, VCV Rack or SuperCollider.

Live coding the Elektron Digitone with ORCΛ

EZBOT

"In this video I finally test out the multi-map feature on the Digitone. What this allows you to do is to set different "sounds" to specific notes or note ranges. I used this feature for the drums. I also spent a great deal of time making the bass synth sound as close to an analog saw as I could - what is cool about this is that I can morph the bass line from an "analog" sound to a very digital FM sound quickly, this is something you really can't do on an analog synth easily if at all.

Live coding the Digitakt with ORCΛ

EZBOT

"In this video I use ORCA to sequence the Elektron Digitakt! The melodic sounds are single cycle wave forms and the chords are Sequential Rev 2 sampled into the Digitakt. Drums are stocks sounds that I have tweaked to fit the composition. Regarding ORCA, the bass/detuned leads are sequenced by a scale sequencer with a random gate generator, drums are using a random gate generator, and the plucks are sequenced by a random arp generator. Those are my naming conventions strictly to describe the actions ORCA is producing. Want to know how I did it? Join my Patreon for behind the scenes video's with explanations.

Live coding the Model:Cycles with ORCΛ

Published on May 26, 2020 EZBOT

"This live coding session was really something special. I think the Model:Cycles and ORCA are the best companions I have found so far. The way control all works with 6 different synth engines is just unbelievably fun with ORCA running the show."

Orca - random looping MIDI sequencer by B.Logic

Published on May 11, 2020
Random Loops is a random looping sequencer that lets you have very flexible control over the probability a sequence will change, possible scale/notes, possible octave ranges, velocity, note length and midi channel/note on off values.
Controlling the digitakt/tone with it here.
here is the patch code for one. also, directions below
EDIT: I updated the code, it now has a central place to set number of steps and clock multiplier:

Get the code, and some variations of it here, directions included in txt file:

Live coding: Roland D-05 and the Empress Zoia

Published on Apr 12, 2020 Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) live codes the Roland D-05 using ORCA while processing the audio with the Empress Zoia. ORCA is an esoteric programming language used for creating sequencers live, it is the perfect companion to the Roland D-05's sounds and fun to use joystick. The Empress Zoia spices up the legendary synthesizer with it's creative, customizable, modern, and modular mono or stereo effects.

From Roland:
'Released in 1987, the Roland D-50 Linear Synthesizer is easily one of the most influential keyboards ever made. This revolutionary instrument helped define the sound of the late ‘80s with its instantly recognizable mix of sampled attacks and synthesized sustaining waveforms, plus built-in chorus, reverb, and EQ. It’s the basis of classic tracks in a wide range of genres including synth pop, new wave, new jack, and R&B, and can be heard in countless film scores of the era. With the Roland D-05, you get the iconic sound and dedicated control of the D-50 in a modern device that perfectly recreates the legendary synth down to its finest details.'

Order Roland D-05 here:
https://bit.ly/roland_d05

From Empress:
'The ZOIA is basically a modular synthesizer in pedal form. Instead of being a delay effect or tremolo, the ZOIA provides the modules necessary to build a delay or tremolo from the ground up. But since you're the one building it, you can make it do whatever you want. With the ZOIA you can build your own custom effects, synthesizers, midi controllers, and virtual pedal boards. And to make life a little easier, we've created modules for all your standard guitar effects. So for instance, if you want a phaser, you can just plop down a phaser. You don't have to break out the textbooks to learn that they're built out of all-pass filters. (Of course, if you're a nerd like us, you can use the ZOIA to build them out of all-pass filters).'

ORCA Visual Programming Language Developed by a Couple on a Sailboat

Published on Jan 15, 2019 Allieway Audio

"Get ORCA for free here: https://100r.co/pages/orca.html - if you like it, make sure to donate to it's lovely creators :)

Heya! I'm still working on my doubleknot+mosstone vid, but I wanted to make a quick informal video on this cool software in the meantime - it's pretty impromptu and not the best audio quality but I hope you still enjoy it!

Let me know what you think in the comments and maybe I can do a series of videos exploring ORCA a little bit further and making some complete songs :)

By the way, I didn't mention it in this video, but the couple who developed this software live in a studio on a sailboat, where they develop cool open source tools for artist! How rad is that?? :0

Correction, by the way: ORCA uses Base 36 numbers, not 36-Bit, and l was thinking of UDP, not OSC (though it also has OSC capabilities)."

"Orca is not a synth, but a livecoding environment to write procedural sequencers. In other words, Orca is meant to control other applications such as a DAW (Ableton, Renoise, VCV Rack, etc.), or an audio server such as SuperCollider.

Each letter of the alphabet is an operation, lowercase letters operate on bang(*), uppercase letters operate each frame. Bangs can be generated by various operations, such as E colliding with a 0, see the bang.orca example.

Operators

A add: Outputs the sum of inputs.
B bool: Bangs if input is not empty, or 0.
C clock: Outputs a constant value based on the runtime frame.
D delay: Bangs on a fraction of the runtime frame.
E east: Moves eastward, or bangs.
F if: Bangs if both inputs are equal.
G generator: Writes distant operators with offset.
H halt: Stops southward operators from operating.
I increment: Increments southward operator.
J jumper: Outputs the northward operator.
K konkat: Outputs multiple variables.
L loop: Loops a number of eastward operators.
M modulo: Outputs the modulo of input.
N north: Moves Northward, or bangs.
O offset: Reads a distant operator with offset.
P push: Writes an eastward operator with offset.
Q query: Reads distant operators with offset.
R random: Outputs a random value.
S south: Moves southward, or bangs.
T track: Reads an eastward operator with offset.
U uturn: Reverses movement of inputs.
V variable: Reads and write globally available variables.
W west: Moves westward, or bangs.
X teleport: Writes a distant operator with offset.
Y jymper: Outputs the westward operator.
Z zoom: Moves eastwardly, respawns west on collision.
* bang: Bangs neighboring operators.
# comment: Comments a line, or characters until the next hash.
: midi: Sends a MIDI note.
^ cc: Sends a MIDI CC value.
; udp: Sends a UDP message.
= osc: Sends a OSC message."
