FARFISA POLYCHROME - vintage synthesizer / string machine HQ sound demo

YouTube via AnalogAudio1

"This video shows the Farfisa Polychrome played with a Roland DEP-5 FX processor for delay effects.

The Farfisa Polychrome from 1979 is one of the rarest Farfisa keyboards. It is a flexible string synthesizer / string ensemble with a very characterful, musical sound.

It has a PERCUSSIVE section, a STRING section, a ENSEMBLE section and a VOCAL CHORUS section. The most sections have VCF cutoff / resonance controls. It has a great phaser (with SPEED, EMPHASIS and TREMOLO controls), a noise generator, single outputs, an external input jack (for external signals, which can be treated with the Polychrome's chorus and phaser) and a lot more... It even has aftertouch! And it's fully polyphonic, too..."

"To be given to good hands with a heavy heart: FARFISA Polychrome, ultra rare ensemble synth with legendary analogue vocal chorus section. The unit needs indeed some love and care (fader crackle etc.), but apart from that all sections work fine and sound great! 220V."

"Today we take a look at the Crumar Multiman-S, an Italian string synthesizer from 1977.

We also look at the concept of a string synthesizer in general; an instrument that served as a stop gap, but that forged its own identity due the distinctive sound and the records they were used in.

Originally conceived by Ken Freeman, others saw the impending gold rush and got their instruments out. When I say there was a 'string synth heyday', I'm not exaggerating. Here's a list of just some of them:

The Forgotten Synthesizers Of Marche Region

video upload by HAINBACH

Update: you can find additional posts featuring The Museo Del Synth Marchigiano here.

"The Marche Region in Italy was home to a thriving industry of music instrument production from the 1950s to the mid-90s. Tens of thousands of people made organs, accordions and small runs of synthesizers that were like nothing else in the world. Much production closed in the 90s, leaving only a few companies around, and many people lost their jobs. The history of Marche synths was not talked about, too bitter were the memories. The Museo Del Synth Marchigiano aims to change that - a motley crew of synth lovers work together to get the story about this special time in music instrument history out.

I was invited to play a show at Acusmatic Festival in Ancona and visit the collection before. I was overwhelmed by the amazing sounds these machines made, so I captured them on tape and for use in my performance. I also just had to film every synth I could get my hand for you to enjoy. You will find instruments by Siel, Elka, Elgan, Farfisa, Crumar, CRB and more here.

YAMAHA SK30 String Machine 1979 | HD DEMO

Published on Apr 2, 2018 AnalogAudio1

"(c) 2018 by AnalogAudio1

Synthesizer Demo of the analog synthesizer/string machine YAMAHA SK-30. I played it along with Lexicon MPX500 (reverb) and Korg SDD-3000 (delay).

Yamaha's SK-series are string machines with additional sections (poly-synth, mono-synth, brass, organ, depending on the model). The SK30 was the flagship (the SK50 was just a double manual version of the SK30). It has "ORGAN", "STRING", "POLY-SYNTH" and "MONO-SYNTH" sections, they all are mixable. The Poly-Synth section has a nice analog filter (but only one for all voices - finally it's a string synth, not 100% a synthesizer). In a certain footage/waveform, it even has a highpass filter engaged. The keyboard has aftertouch, which is assignable to LFO intensity or filter cutoff (similar to Yamaha SY-1/2 or Roland SH-2000).

A nice layer-string machine! It's a big beast, it competed with ARP Quadra, Korg Trident, Crumar Multiman, Farfisa Soundmaker and Farfisa Polychrome."

Eurorack phasers - two new additions

video upload by John Schussler

"Two new phasers have arrived. The G-Storm Electro Polychrome is from the Italian Farfisa synth/organ from the 1970s. The Nonlinear Circuits Encephalo Adjuster is from, near as I can tell, a wide orbit outside Jupiter.

Very different in character, but both with lots of great sounds.

Envelope is Zadar, sequence is from Stochastic IG, and VCO is a Patching Panda Operat (saw wave).

00:00 Intro
00:20 Polychrome
08:20 Encephalo Adjuster"

You can find additional details on the G-Storm Electro Polychrome here. This is the first post to feature the Nonlinear Circuits Encephalo Adjuster. Details and pics follow.

"This module is a 24 stage phase shifter using LDRs in a black box. It is a little more complex to build than usual but most of the build is repetitious and not so difficult. I have added plenty of pics in this guide to help with the build.

Probably the unusual feature is the positive and negative feedback path. Feedback is 0 when the Regen pot is in the middle, turn it to the left for negative feedback, to the right for positive, or use CV to do the job for you. It will self-oscillate at the extremes.

It is probably obvious at this point that I have a thing for phasers. 24 stages are somewhat ridiculous but I wanted to try it and the result is a very nice smooth phaser with some angry bits when you push it. The name comes from a mind control device that appears in a few AE Van Vogt novels, I have been itching to use it for years.

The trimpot on the top PCB sets the operating range for the Phase pot. Set it to remove any dead zones at the extremes.

Black/gold panels are available for this module.
