Using Jellysquasher to Add Dynamics

Published on Jul 11, 2017 intellijel

"While the Jellysquasher works great for smoothing and fattening dynamic material, it can also add life to static drum grooves and riffs. By sending rhythmic LFOs and Envelopes to its CV inputs notes or beats can be accented and made less predictable. This video offers a few examples of how this can be done.

Jellysquasher:
Analog coloring compressor module

100% analog signal path and sidechain feedforward compressor
Unique (log based RMS) detector
Output routed through a specially selected Edcor transformer with highly desirable saturation qualities.
Three carefully designed analog circuits to impose specific character on the output signal:
TUBE adds non-linear distortion providing second order harmonics
TAPE adds symmetrical distortion providing both even and odd harmonics
XFRM modifies the transformer feedback circuit, giving a boost to low bass content
All three color circuits can be engaged in any combination to react differently based on the input drive level and makeup gain
Sidechain routed through a voltage controllable SVF filter with LP, BP and HP modes. A trimmer on the PCB allows you to adjust Q. This filter can be used independently of the rest of the module.
External sidechain input allows triggering of the compressor with external sources.
Link IN/OUT allows two Jellysquashers to be chained together for stereo operation.
Full CV control of sidechain cutoff, threshold, ratio, attack time, release time, and makeup gain.
Wet/Dry control allows for “New York” style compression where there is a blend of the dry and compressed output signal.
LED bargraph with selectable display modes to view the signal level in VU or the gain reduction in dB.
Specifications:

Max input: +17dBv
Input impedance: 68k ohms
Output impedance: 100 ohms
Frequency response: 5Hz to 30KHz
Range of gain reduction: over 50dB
Threshold: -40dBv to +17dBv
Ratio: 1.3:1 to infinity
Attack: 200us to 200ms
Release: 50ms to 5sec
Makeup gain: 48dB

Intellijel SHIFTY & jellysquasher dub

Published on Mar 24, 2017 intellijel

"First taste of the Intellijel Shifty voice allocator / note hocketing module.
Metropolis sequence is being processed by Shifty to generate three voice controls. Voice #1 is an Atlantis through Springray, Voice #2 and 3 are Shapeshifters via Polaris filters. Background drums from Acidlab Miami. Everything running through the Intellijel Cylonix Rainmaker. Just a quick taste of making some interesting melodic stuff that is pseudo polyphonic."

"A little jam using the Acidlab Miami (TR-808 clone) being processed Springray reverb and then jellysquasher compressor module. Kick drum from Miami is split so that it is mixed in dry and also used to side chain. The chords come from Shapeshifter being processed by polaris, rainmaker, springray and then the jellysquasher too. Bass line is from the Atlantis being sequenced by Metropolis and slaved to the Miami accent out."

Intellijel cylonix rainmaker and jellysquasher processing some 808 drums

Published on Jan 27, 2016 intellijel

"Simple drum loop from the Acidlab Miami is first being processed by the Intellijel Jellysquasher (a coloring compressor) then into the Intellijel | Cylonix Rainmaker spectral delay processor.

The wet/dry is adjusted until %50 wet signal and then I play with the global pitch shifting and then assign one of the Aux controls to Grain size.
Towards the end I freeze the buffer to create a loop that I manipulate and then unfreeze it at the end to go back into realtime input processing."

Glare [Dub Techno]: Modular Synth - Analog Rytm - Juno 60 - MS20 Mini

Published on Feb 18, 2017 DesertFishHQ

"This session demonstrates the processing capabilities of the Intelligel Audio Interface II. The Juno 60 and MS20 are going through into the modular with ambient strings coming from MI Rings. Also using Makenoise Erb-Verb and an Intelligel Jellysquasher compressor. The compressor allows for some sidechaining to the kick from the Rytm. The Juno and MS20 are going through the Optomix to create the gated effect with some S/H on the Filter.

Kosmic Krell

Published on May 16, 2017 intellijel

"In this video we have created a short piece inspired by the Krell patch, a type of self generating music that takes its name from the music of the alien race featured in Forbidden Planet. The Krell patch uses random sources to generate melodies and gates, with higher notes using faster envelopes creating quick trills and slower bass swells.

In this case we are using a µScale to quantize the random notes into a Harmonic Minor scale. Delay and pitch shifting is being applied by Rainmaker, sidechain compression of every third step by Jellysquasher, and reverb from Springray.
Enjoy!

You can view a step by step demonstration of creating a Krell patch on a Buchla system here: https://vimeo.com/48466272" [posted here]

The most extreme delay effect in the world!?

Published on Nov 7, 2018 ANDREW HUANG / SUTURE SOUND

Third video is super nice.

Playlist:
The most extreme delay effect in the world!
Rain I | Andrew Huang
Generative sequence coming from Eloquencer - about half the notes are set to skip or slightly vary in pitch about half the time. The sequence plucks nRings (4-note polyphony, modulated/inharmonic string mode) which runs through Rainmaker for delay, Jellysquasher for compression, and Morgasmatron for a bit of low pass filtering in the outro. Towards the end I also fade Rainmaker gradually to full wet.

CV coming from Noise Tools' slew output (attenuated by Quad VCA), Pamela's New Workout, and Dual S&H, to modulate the delay time and nRings' "brite" and "damp". In hindsight I should have attenuated further because the delay signal's pitch gets a little too warbly at times.

Final output brought into Ableton to pass through a FabFilter Pro-R reverb and to add the rain recording.
Rain II | Andrew Huang
A variation on the patch I posted yesterday. I randomized Eloquencer's sequence, randomized Rainmaker's settings, changed nRings' to sympathetic strings mode and fine tuned some of its other parameters, and this whole other piece arrived in a matter of minutes.

Mother Gets A New Groove

Published on May 5, 2017 intellijel

"In this video we are playing with a Moog Mother-32 integrated with an intellijel system. The mother-32 is being sequenced by a Metropolis and modulated by various CV sources such as the Dixie and Quadra to create a wobbly bassline. A unison drone from a Shapeshifter creates a sort of background pad sound. We use some Springray spring reverb, Jellysquasher compression and delay pattern from the Rainmaker to create a more complex soundscape."
