Seuential Circuits TOM with Tauntek TOM16 extansion

video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"The Sequential TOM was already a great drum machine at the time it was released, with a lot of nice features, especially regarding MIDI implementation. You could play, record, synchronise the machine over MIDI and adjust sample direction, volume, pitch and pan of every sample either on the device or over MIDI, in real time and for every step ! That gives you lots of possible variations. Not many drum machines could could achive that at the time.

And now thanx to another amazing engineering by Tauntek you can have 16 kits in the instrument at all time, without the need to switch cartridges. And even more important: you can swap the internal kit samples as well as the cartridge ones, enabling for any combination of 2 kits you wish. This is impossible with cartridges or other upgrade available, and only possible thanx to Tauntek firmware. And that makes a huge difference. Note that you can only have 15 sounds at hand not 16. The 8th pad from the cartridge layer is always a trigger out message and won't trigger a sound, even if the loade kit has 8 sounds.

You can even make your own kits if you have access to an Eprom programmer.
Check Tauntek dedicated page for more info (http://www.tauntek.com/TOM16cart.htm)
This unit also had its RAM maxed out, expanding the internal 8k to 32k and thus bringing the stock 2,300 notes capacity to a whopping 10,400. And believe me you run very quickly out of memory if you make some complex patterns with different variations.

So here is the demo, i didn't make patterns demos for each of the 16 kits but you'll get the idea, and I didn't go too deep into external MIDI playing/programming but bare in mind you can record instrument tuning pitch, volume, pan and sample direction (reverse) for every instrument on every step.

Here is the timeline:
00:00 stock kit patterns
02:28 TR808 kit patterns
03:56 TR909 kit patterns
05:08 TR606 kit patterns
06:25 CR78 kit patterns
07:17 sound preview of all the kits included in the box
11:18 quick realtime patterns programming using external pads

list of the kits included in the TOM16:

Oberheim Matrix 6 - Tauntek 2.15 upgraded OS SN 7623278

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"24 hour sale - Upgraded Matrix 6

Fully functional and relatively clean Matrix 6. It's fully upgraded with the Tauntek 2.15 OS upgrade, and also includes the stock 2.13 EPROM should you want to revert to stock (I don't know why you would as Tauntek provides only benefits, but some people like things stock). The keyboard is level and every key works smoothly, with velocity sensing. Every button on the keypad also works, although the '0' button requires a firm press. It sounds fat and gorgeous, like an Oberheim should.

The Matrix 6 was just given a a brand new battery and thorough testing of all functions by Synapse Audio here in Portland. Tim couldn't find one thing wrong with it and says the new battery should last for more than a decade. This is as close to a worry-free vintage 80s synth as you can get these days. There are some scratches on the bottom and a few bits of rust on the metal, as you can see in the pictures, but it's very clean for a model of this vintage.

The Tauntek OS upgrade means that you can control it via a dedicated hardware interface such as the Stereoping or indeed any programmable MIDI controller. Filter sweeps will now sound like a knob being swept on an analog synth rather than a stepped, intermittent mess as with the original OS.

In addition to installing the upgraded OS, I've switched the levers to perform like you'd expect, which means reversing their direction in the menu setting, and set the interface to fast mode so you can cycle through presets and programming options using the arrow buttons rather than having to type in each parameter ever time you want to switch. You can still type in the number if you want, but cycling through filter or envelope functions using the arrow buttons is much faster.

The factory presets have been restored after the new battery install, and I've just tweaked a few of the key presets to reduce the long release tails that cut into polyphony when changing chords (it is 6 notes, after all). Programming isn't difficult using fast mode, although it requires incrementing and decrementing buttons rather than twisting knobs."

Kawai SX-240 Polyphonic SYNTHESIZER w/ TAUNTEK OS & built in SEQUENCER

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Excellent overall condition, this enhanced Kawai SX240 synth (with Tauntek) looks much newer than a ~35 year old classic! Made in Hammamatsu, Japan in 1986.Tauntek O/S allows Sysex patch transfers/dumps and MIDI CC, so you can use a MIDI control surface (like Novation Remote SL) for multi-parameter editing. (The 1-at-a-time parameter editing is a big limitation of the original factory O/S.)Just recently professionally cleaned and serviced, including deep cleaning of keybed. All 8 voices work, 24 total OSC. Super creamy, silky SSM2044 filters! All keys, pitch bender, LEDs, and tact switches function, 100% ready for studio or field use! This SX240 is also upgraded with:1) latest Tauntek O/S, so MIDI SYSEX & CC capable.2) a CR2032 coin cell battery holder, no more dumb soldered Lithium batteries! Now it's just an easy-to-replace LiR2032 lithium battery going forward."

"The Tauntek 2.15 custom OS offers almost too many improvements to list here. I highly recommend checking out a Tauntek’s web page on Matrix 6 Firmware. Not only is his new OS vastly more responsive to MIDI commands, it adds several new features and brings the MIDI compatibility to modern standards. A donation from your purchase price goes to Tauntek for the recognition of his hard work"

Kawai SX-240 with full MIDI CC!

Published on Mar 25, 2017 Sean Ober

"Thanks to the fine folks at tauntek.com, this minty Kawai SX-240 now responds to MIDI CC. Burned a couple new firmware EPROMs, removed about 8 screws, swapped the chips and done! Such an easy, rewarding mod.

Early stages of this available firmware but damn-near complete... hat's off to tauntek.com This is one of only a few SX-240's in the world, this powerful ;o) Shoot, only about 1000 of these boards might have been made and many, many of those died due to battery leaks. Talk about a rare bird.

I also would like to thank Jordan from Cuff Lynx for selling me this bad boy! Thanks and Save The Wave... SynthWave that is!!!"

OSCAR SYNTHESIZER - FITTING THE TAUNTEK MIDI BOARD AND OPERATING SYSTEM

video by Mindburner

"The OSCar is a fabulous monosynth designed and built by Chris Huggett. My machine had been plagued with issues from day one. A major problem was the highly unreliable start up. The synth would not 'boot' and many power off/on cycles were needed to get it to work.

TAUNTEK have a new MIDI PCB and Operating System with may new features. I hoped this may fix my synth and make it useable aging. Here I detail my install of one of the first version of the Firmware.

The PCB needs to be built but many of the parts are readily found.

More details can be found at TAUNTEK
Special thanks to the folks on the OSCar freelists group.

Video for information only. A qualified synth tech is always recommended for synth repair."

Tauntek Firmware Update for the AKAI AX80 Synthesizer

This one in via MATRIXSYNTH reader Tim:

"Akai AX80 owners out there might fins this interesting — I’ve been involved with beta testing a firmware upgrade for the Akai AX80, which adds a number of features.

You gain the ability to save and load your patches via MIDI, as gain CC/SYSEX abilities. There are some other nice upgrades in there, like having a live VCF cutoff control, the ability to toggle the LFO to free running from triggered, and having the current patch number displayed when saving. I even managed be able to edit every parameter at the same time via MIDI CC! The filter control is definitely steppy, but oddly enough, it seems a lot smoother when modulated via MIDI CC.

The site with the info is here: http://tauntek.com/AX80.htm

If you can flash your own EPROMs, then it’s a free upgrade, or you can order the chip, which is pretty cheap ($30) and simple to swap out."

Tauntek also did CC upgrade mods for the Sequential Circuits Max & Multi-Trak.

New Upgrade for the Sequential Circuits Multi-Trak Adds MIDI CC & More

SCI Sequential Multitrak - Midi CC Firmware upgrade

Published on Mar 10, 2014 LeonDigz·19 videos

Update: two additional notes:
- CC's also work when the unit is in the "Stack"/Split mode, as well as when it is in midi mode 4 (multitimbral).
- MIDI CC receive only.

This is pretty incredible news. The SCI Multi-Trak offered a velocity sensitive keyboard which the Six-Trak lacked, however the Six-Trak supported MIDI CC which allowed you to use external controllers to edit its parameters. The Multi-Trak lacked CC so you could only edit it directly. This upgrade will finally bring MIDI CC support to the Multi-Trak and the CCs will match the Six-Trak with the addition of a few extra parameters only found on the Multi-Trak. If you have both synths and/or a TaunTek upgraded Max, you should be able to edit them at the same time which should be interesting for layering and editing patches. You'll also be able to do some decent A/B tests between the synths set to the same parameters.

Video Description and link to more details:

"I've been working with Bob Grieb to beta test & provide feedback on a firmware upgrade for the SCI multitrack. The Upgrade accomplishes the following;

-Midi CC parameter control for all parameter matching the Six-Trak & Max.
-Midi CC control has been code optimized for better performance.
-Additional 4 midi cc parameters LFO, VCA & VCF velocity sensitivity amount + a special request to unlock the multiplier on the VCO envelope.
-VCO envelope now has a multiplier via cc#43 to achieve 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x & 16x original depth allowing for more diverse percussive (synth drum) & sfx type patches.
-Two sets of factory patches are now embedded in ROM and can be loaded holding down a button on power up.

More information can be found at;

http://www.tauntek.com/SCIMultitrak.htm

This project was built upon development of a SCI Max upgrade Bob Grieb and I also worked on which gives this oft looked over lil' brother of the Multitrak & Sixtrak a new lease on life. http://www.tauntek.com/SCIMax.htm

Thanks + Congrats to Mr. Grieb for making a fantasy reality for many Multitrak owners.

p9

*P.S mind you ears/speakers, this synth noodling uses a lot of the cross-mod feature of the CEM3394."

Roland Jupiter 6 With Tauntek Mod SN 280707

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"- Outstanding cosmetic condition

- All functions work ( see embedded YouTube video for a quick playthrough )

- Includes Tauntek Mod, which offers loads of new features:

1) MIDI Sysex patch and patch preset save and restore - saves or restores entire tone RAM (all 48 patches and 31 patch presets) in one operation (tape save/load works as before)

2) MIDI CC parameter changes are now supported. Separate control of upper and lower voices in split mode for most parameters. (No CC's are transmitted)

Maximum rate for CC reception is two per 19 mSec period, which is approximately 105 CC's per second. If CC's are sent faster than this, some will be dropped.

3) Non-volatile storage of MIDI channel and user settings

4) User settings for the following:

a) Mod wheel CC destination can be any one of the following:

VCO mod by LFO1 amount
VCF cutoff mod by LFO1 amount
VCA mod by LFO1 amount
LFO1 rate
XMOD manual amount
Pulse width
VCF cutoff
VCF resonance
b) Arp can be clocked by MIDI instead of internal clock, with five divider settings

Can be configured to require Start/Stop, or just free-run

c) Factory patches and patch presets can be read from the EPROM instead of user patches in RAM.

(User patches are not changed)

d) "All notes off" MIDI messages sent by original code every time the last key was released can be disabled.

5) Arpeggiator "Down then up" mode has been changed to a random arpeggiator mode.

6) VCO waveform buttons now toggle, making it easier to enable multiple ones. They can all be turned off.

7) VCO sync can now be set to "both ways" although this doesn't seem particularly useful

As noted above, MIDI CC reception is now supported for controlling patch parameters."

How to POLYCHAIN The Oberheim Matrix 1000 + Install the MASSIVE Tauntek 1.2 firmware upgrade!!!

video upload by Vintage Synthesizer Solutions

Note the Matrix-1000 has 1000 presets, but only the first 200 are user programmable.

"The Oberheim Matrix 1000 has been around since 1988, but did you know that it can be polychained with up to 5 other units?!? This is not a simple MIDI In/Thru setup... One unit must set as the master and then distributes the incoming note data evenly between itself and each of the slaves. Matrix 6 and 6Rs can join the party too, but only as slave units.

We also demonstrate how to upgrade these units with the @Tauntek 1.20 OS upgrade. Add in a @Kiwitechnics patch editor and you've got a monster vintage analog synthesizer. Enjoy our quick demonstration of 3 x Matrix 1000s: 18 voices & 36 DCOs of creamy Oberheim goodness..."
