Sequential Prophet VS Synthesizer - eDrumming with Bidule

Published on Mar 7, 2017 BecauseDrumGeek

This is the legendary Sequential Circuits Prophet VS Digital Vector Synthesizer from 1986! added to an e-drum-setup.

This video is meant to show you that it is possible to integrate melody play from a hardware synth (or of course any soft-synth) into your e-drumming by playing only 1 zone (e.g. the bow of a cymbal pad) for each programmed cycle of notes/accords (no matter how many notes in one cycle!...).

A second melody is triggered by a second zone (e.g. the edge of a cymbal pad). It doesn't matter where you have stopped: hiitting the other zone will always launch the first note of the other cycle.

A third zone is meant to stop and reset it all.

Forget about using samples in a sampler tool. Triggering a synthesizer directly is so much more comfortable!!!

And please don't think that it is easy to handle a synth with drum pads: every new hit has to replace the note before...

So you'll need a wizard:
Plogue's Bidule makes it possible!!!

Patchblocks Programmable Mini Synth Modules on Kickstarter

A bit like KORG LittleBits meets Nord Modular, Pure Data & Plogue Bidule.

via Kickstarter

"Software patching goes hardware! Create your own modular synthesiser by programming Patchblocks with our software editor.

Program your own synthesiser modules

We are proud to present Patchblocks, a modular synthesiser and signal processing system where you decide what the hardware does. You want a filter module? Turn your Patchblock into one! You want a crazy sounding bassline synth with built-in arppegiator? Make it so! We provide you with an empty canvas, your imagination fills it."

"How does it work?

All you need is a Patchblock, a Mac or Windows PC and our free software. The software allows you to program your hardware module the way you want. This is done in a so called “visual programming language”, in other words, you don't have to go into 100% geek mode and write code to make it happen. Visual programming is easy, you choose from a variety of low level sound processing elements and combine their functions by connecting them with virtual cables – a bit like a modular synthesiser, but in software. Your library of software modules includes signal generators and processors (e.g. oscillators, filters, delays etc.), signal routing options and even modules for algorithmic composition. Our editor lets you emulate how your patch will sound and once you’re happy with it you can upload it to your Patchblock hardware simply by connecting it via USB. Once programmed you can unplug the Patchblock and jam away."

"What can I do with them?

A lot, it's really up to you. Plug some of your other gear in and use them as a sound processor if you want. Make an awesome noise box that produces pure digital filth. Let them play a concerto of chaos based algorithmic sequences. But also don't forget to think outside the box! Because you can combine several Patchblocks, you can make them work together. One Patchblock could for example generate an LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) that you plug into another block to modulate processes that happen in there. Or you can create a chain of audio effects and processes. You can do this analogue style, by connecting them with audio cables, or via a digital connection, by clicking the Patchblocks together directly. Or even both!"

See Kickstarter for more including some audio demos.

Multi-sequence #3 (Plogue Bidule + Elektrostudio ODsay VSTi (x3) + Audacity)

YouTube Published on May 10, 2012 by GruithuisenCityMan

"This is not some Cubase stuff or something else of the same kind. This is three virtual step-sequencers i have built with Plogue Bidule synchro at different tempos and transposing one and each other in a complex manner. The result sounds a bit like algorithmic music though it's not. By the way, i didn't play one single note of that track. Sequencers are my friends and i did just let them play.

The result sounds a bit like algorithmic music though it's not. It sounds a bit like Europe Endless's Kraftwerk too. I deeply do love Kraftwerk's music but that was not at all made on purpose. Anyway, i keep it like that. By the way, i didn't play one single note of that track. Sequencers are my friends and i did just let them play.

Interview with Portal 2's Mike Morasky

Full interview on the Plogue website here. The interview covers some of the synth used with a focus on ChipSounds.

"Honestly, I probably used every chip available in chipsounds at one point or another. The only thing I purposefully avoided (after testing of course) was anything that actually sounded clearly like 8bit game sounds or game music. I was looking at those patches as if Aperture had actually sourced all these cheap chips as the voice boxes for the puzzle mechanisms in the test chambers. Although I tried writing some game style chiptunes, it really broke the immersive nature of the game and I ended up avoiding it."

"A unique characteristic of Portal 2′s soundtrack, apart from its sonic grandness, is that it’s generated in real time by an adaptive music system that react to the player’s actions. This dynamic music was also designed as a reward for successfully completing puzzles inside the game."

An unstable kind of path (Analogue Solutions Telemark on it's own and patched)

YouTube Uploaded by GruithuisenCityMan on Feb 15, 2012

"For this improvised track, only an Analogue Solutions Telemark on it's own and patched has been used. Plogue Bidule did just provide some delay effect and Audacity did just help to add a bit of Doppler based stereo effect. That's all. I didn't tweak in any way the Telemark during the recording. All the sonic changes came from the patch i used (which is exactly the one showed in the slide movie)."
