Base+Live basic

Published on Jun 20, 2013 lividTV·142 videos

"The Livid Base Remote Script for Ableton Live 8 and 9 transforms the Base into an incredibly versatile tool for mixing, making, and performing music. This video provides a simple introduction to the modes of the script, including Launch, Send, Device, and, most memorably, User. Conveniently captioned throughout, you can follow the mix and see how everything works.
This just scratches the surface of the modes. There's more to this script that we'll cover in future videos, and you can read all the details on our wiki: http://wiki.lividinstruments.com/wiki..."

Livid Base: Experimenting with Max for Live

Published on Jun 18, 2013 lividTV·142 videos

"We started some experiments with Max For Live step sequencers and the Livid Base. These are extremely rudimentary, but because they can be accessed with Device control, they are very powerful and easy to work with. Control of these step sequencers is as simple as pointing the controller to the device using the Base Remote Script for Ableton Live 9 in Device mode. One you navigate to a module, it acts as a "super device" handing off the pads and sliders to the Max for Live patch. While these little toys won't be a "final" product, we'll have something for you to play with soon!"

Base Polyphonic Aftertouch

Published on Jun 10, 2013 lividTV·138 videos

"This video demonstrates some of the wild possibilities with aftertouch and the Livid Base MIDI controller, including a novel way to integrate the iPhone with the Base. The 32 touch sensitive pads can output polyphonic aftertouch, so if your synth is great enough to use that (such as the Madrona Labs Aalto plugin), you've got some fantastic possibilities at your fingertips. Stay tuned: after the audio weirdness, there's a short explanation on how to quickly configure the Base using the online Editor.

Livid CNTRL:R + Eurorack Modular

Published on May 31, 2013 lividTV·135 videos

"Joseph Pailo and Peter Nyboer in an analog + digital frenzy. Livid CNTRL:R controls Ableton Live and digital effects and syncs analog sequencers. Joseph goes mad on the analog knobs and patching.
The music is a result of jam session where the CNTRL:R is sequencing a bass line with the SynthStepper M4L plug-in. Those notes go out to a USB-MIDI converter and provide notes and clock to Joseph's drum sequencer and oscillator. The CNTRL:R is also used to control a DrumSteppr for additional drum sounds and effects. Finally, the audio from the modular system is sent back into Live, for digital effects, controlled by Peter on the CNTRL:R. Latencies were not compensated, but appreciated for their disorienting repercussions.
This is cut in a pseudo-psycho-documentary style, mixing footage of Peter and Joseph playing, video and audio of Pailo explaining patches and motivations, and still photos from the session."

"The Elements MIDI modules provide a large variety of options with hands-on control and interactive feedback. Each module works with our Elements system and can be mixed and matched to create your own controller layout. Element modules come with the necessary ribbon cables.

The 16K Module contains sixteen rotary potentiometers.

Full overview of the Elements system

Introducing Livid Elements, the completely modular MIDI controller platform. Now you can finally create your own controller layout without any soldering, electronics, or complicated assembly required.

Element modules come in many different configurations and layouts so you can rearrange, replace, and mix modules, creating your own MIDI controller with ease. Each module connects to the Elements Brain for easy plug-and-play configuration and setup. Elements modules are housed in one of our custom eurorack cases for total plug-and-play integration. The standardized, modular format allows for an incredible amount of flexibility and expansion.

Elements is based around the eurorack format, a popular analog synth standard of modules and enclosure sizes so you can create your own customized setup. The threaded rails of the cases make it easy to connect and configure your controller by simply plugging the module into the Brain and fastening it to the rails. The Elements Configuration Utility lets you configure your layout and edit your MIDI settings. With a growing list of available modules (don’t forget: you can create your own Elements, too!) we’ve designed this system to grow with you and the community of people making modules for the Elements system. Our own DIY Omni boards are also compatible with the Elements system.

Whether you are recording, mixing, performing live, or need a unique setup for your show control, Elements gives you complete control over your system. Our Element modules provide a large variety of options with hands-on control and interactive feedback. If you’re mixing multitrack audio or performing visuals, Elements empowers you with your very own set of options to suit your needs. Mix and match modules, swap them out for different setups, and even create your own module designs. Elements gives you the flexibility of a modular system that can grow and change with your needs.

With a USB port, MIDI in and out jacks, and an optional 5v power supply, Elements is a massively flexible controller solution. Whether performing with Ableton Live, mixing visuals with Cell DNA, DJing with Traktor, or controlling your favorite analog gear, Elements provides a wide range of control possibilities.

In addition to our own Elements module offerings, we’ve created a Hardware Development Kit (HDK) for other companies, artists, and designers looking to create and share their own modules. Our system allows buttons, rotary potentiometers, fader, pressure sensitive pads, leds, encoders, sensors, and other analog devices to be connected through Livid and third party modules.

Cases

Our Elements cases come in multiple sizes, giving you the flexibility you need to mix and match modules. These cases are crafted in our Austin, Texas facility with strong aluminum and hand finished mahogany end caps. We’ve designed them with standard Eurorack sizing, which allows them to work with many existing Eurorack analog synth gear. An optional power supply panel can also be ordered to replace the MIDI ports panel to accommodate analog synth power supplies. These cases also have removable backs for easy access to your modules."

Custom Livid Waldorf MicroWave 1 & 2 Midi Controller

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Unfinished prototype Livid Elements Midi controller project. Excellent Condition Skiff 80 Bundle, 64 knob Midi Controller. One of a kind custom designed Waldorf Microwave 1 or 2 face panel templates. Needs to be programmed.

Software can be downloaded at Livid Instruments for free. Must have an understanding of Sysex midi language. I can't give support for this, please look at software first and make sure it's within your learning curve.

I never got around to programming this and no longer own a Waldorf MW 1 or 2. Parameters are same on either MW1 or MW2 but Sysex language may have differences, I don't know so you'll need to have your own midi implementation chart for whichever synth you wish to program this too. Doesn't have to be Waldorf, this can be programmed to any midi synths or other midi equipment, for any parameters you wish. Removable photo-card face templates (No adhesive was applied. these cards are being held on under knobs, doesn't affect knob turning). Templates have crudely cut holes, (not visible with knobs on), template fit and finish not perfect. Was experimenting with colors so some knobs have not so legible labels. USB powered, does not require power cord.

Low starting Bid, this bundle consists of (priced separately) Elements Skiff 80 Case (249 new) and four 16K Element modules (119 each new). So this is a great buy even if you don't happen to own a Waldorf. Customize this to your favorite Midi gear!!!"

Malekko analog modules in Livid Elements rack

Malekko analog modules in Livid Elements rack from Livid Instruments on Vimeo.

"We recently added a full row of mostly Malekko modules (http://www.malekkoheavyindustry.com) to a Livid Elements rack. Here's a bit of warmup, recorded from the output of an old-school Bose 501 speaker. There's also a Blue Lantern filter in the mix. This is just a prelude to a complete hybrid digital/analog setup that will merge the best of both worlds for a succubus of synthesis."

Austin I/O Synth Meet Update

For those of you attending SXSW this year, don't miss the Austin I/O Synth Meet on Friday March 15. The following is in via the official Austin I/O Synth Meet Facebook page.

"We're excited to announce that several manufacturers will be showing their wares at our Synth Meet on Friday the 15th. Including FUTURE-RETRO REVOLUTION, Super Synthesis, Delptronics and Livid Instruments!!!!!

To make things a little more interesting, we asked the artists from East Side Glass Studio to set up their gear too.
Ever seen the glass blowing process? ...pretty incredible

Just received word that legendary Austin Synthesist Rick Reed will be gracing our event with his presence!

About: (From Austin Museum of Digital Art)
"Rick Reed (born 1957) has been creating audio compositions since the early 80's. His works are intuitive studies of electricity, frequency fluctuations, and improvised "on the fly" solutions to symmetry problems in electronic sound. Since 2005, he has centered his live work on using a vintage EMS Synthi A synthesizer processed with various effects devices to create complex macromal drones with a surface of aesthetic elegance and beauty.

Reed, currently based in Austin, Texas, has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Recently, he appeared in 2009 at the UK's prestigious Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in ensemble alongside Keith Rowe and former Austinite Bill Thompson. His music has been used by filmmaker Ken Jacobs in three of his experiential films, Spiral Nebula, Mountaineer Spinning, and Capitalism: Child Labor (which won the grand prize at 2006's Curtas Vila de Conde film festival in Portugal, Spain). He also appeared live with Jacobs at Lincoln Center during the "Views From the Avant Garde" portion of 2007's New York Film Festival.

Reed's audio works are available from the labels Elevator Bath, Ecstatic Peace, Pale Disc Japan, Bremsstrahlung Recordings and Beta Lactam Ring. A new double LP record will be released by Elevator Bath in early 2011, which should coincide with a short tour of the east coast."

Our friends at FRIENDS OF SOUND RECORDS will be selling vinyl from their shop at the meet so bring your pocketbooks!"
