EP1: Roland Juno-60 with VintageRack, AltiSpace, Classic FX, SpaceFields

video upload by Igor Vasiliev

"This is a series of short demos of my apps with different synths. How they can change the sound, make it brighter and more engaging or even drastically change it. I really like hardware synths, but these apps will work great with any soft synth on iOS or Mac, also as with a live instruments. So it will be a small series of holiday sound experiments!

VintageRack - Easy LoFi Vintage Vibe Effects

video upload by Igor Vasiliev

"VintageRack (iOS and macOS) is a minimalistic and convenient multi-effect application that contains modules realistically simulating notable retro gear from the early digital age with their natural lo-fi and warm aesthetics. "VintageRack is a minimalistic and convenient multi-effect application that contains modules realistically simulating notable retro gear from the early digital age with their natural lo-fi and warm aesthetics. Most of the effects in this application have been inspired and based on the principles of actual hardware from the 70s and 80s, which is great for giving the sound of any instrument the nostalgic and emotional mood of old recordings.

This application has a clean and intuitive user interface with a well-considered structure. All controls are located on the main screen, which is divided into seven slots for processing (effect) modules. The first slot contains the module for controlling the input, the last one is for controlling the output. Each of the five slots in between are designed to use one of the effect modules. The input signal passes from the first to the last slot and is then sent to the output.

Each slot has a Master Fader that controls the presence of the effect, and a Mute button that smoothly turns the effect on and off. These controls are available to be assigned to a MIDI controller, or to use as audio unit parameters regardless of the type of module in the slot. Also in each slot, there is a Parameters button that opens a panel of additional parameters for each module. Additional parameters of modules are kept to a minimum and represent the most suitable use cases.

The key idea behind application control is to first adjust the parameters of modules, and then use only the Master Fader to change the presence or depth of the effect and the Mute button to turn it on and off. Everything is geared towards fast and easy use.

Another great feature of VintageRack is the ability to set a lower bit depth of processed signal, typical for early digital devices, both for the entire path and for individual modules. As with these devices, this application simulates pre- and post-processing of the analog signal both before and after the digital circuits with the addition of companders, emphasis and filters, which makes the sound similar to the real devices.

Effect modules:

- Analog-style compressor.
- Three band equalizer typical for mixing consoles.
- Classic and reverse delays with modulation feature.
- Two modules of Chorus simulating two well known devices.
- Two modules of Flanger with different options and tones.
- Two modules of Phaser with various sound character.
- AutoWah with several filters based on envelope generator.
- Combined effect of Tremolo and Vibrato with separate rate.
- Ring modulator with additional modulation of carrier.
- Two types of Fuzz with modulated filters.
- Simulation of one of the early digital reverbs.
- Input slot contains Noise gate and Automatic gain control.
- Output slot contains tape-style saturation and three general types of tonestack.

VintageRack is a universal application for iOS and macOS. It can work on iPhone and iPad as well as Mac / MacBook with M1 chip (and later). VintageRack works on iPhone and iPad standalone, as an Audio Unit or Inter-App Audio module, and supports Audiobus and Ableton Link. On MacOS, VintageRack can works both as a standalone application and as an Audio unit (AUv3) with DAWs and audio unit hosts like Ableton Live, Logic Pro, GarageBand, MainStage, Cockos Reaper, Plogue Bidule, Hosting AU, and other hosts that support AUv3 plugins. All application features are available on iOS and macOS, including MIDI support (with a MIDI learn option) and audio unit parameters. VintageRack has a built-in detailed description of all parameters also available as PDF file on the application site."

SpaceFields - Space Ambient Machine

video upload by Igor Vasiliev

"Loop-based mangler effect for creating slowly changing rhythmic sound structures in a deep reverb space from any external signal. Great for experimenting and designing ambient and noise backgrounds with rhythmic elements."

via Motion Sound

"The principle of the application is quite simple. It is based on a loop recorder with two loops. When one loop is recorded, the second is played back. When the loop recording stops, there is a smooth transition between them. Three separate outputs can playback the recorded loop with different pitches (speeds), each with its own effects and two automation generators. The mix of these outputs is fed to the convolution reverb. The reverb is packed with a set of long and deep sound spaces that create a blurry and ambient sound.

But the main feature of this application is its well designed parameters that make it easy to experiment with a huge number of sound options using any source material from live instruments to synthesized sound. With just two parameters you can add complex rhythmic structures based on Euclidean rhythms, and easy-to-use automation generators with a randomize option to add variations to the sound, allowing you to modify parameters like an LFO or based on a given rhythm. The convolution reverb has advanced options with which you can change and extend the original reverb spaces.

This app has an easy-to-use user interface, where all the main controls are located on the single screen, and it is ready to use right out of the box, even without additional settings. And at the same time, you can easily change the parameters of the impulse responses from the built-in library to create your own sound.

Even using the randomization button, in almost every case, you will get interesting and various soundscapes and textures. With this option it is very easy to create the basis of new, unique presets, requiring only slight tweaks to some parameters to get impressive results.

The loop recorder can be started and stopped manually or by input signal, can use fixed length or overwrite the loop while recording, and has the option for crossfade between the end and the beginning of the loop. All this makes it convenient for live use as well as when processing recorded material. As an extended option, you can use a special mode in which the application works as a direct effect, without the loop recorder.

SpaceFields works on iPhone and iPad standalone, as an Audio Unit or Inter-App Audio module, and supports Audiobus and Ableton Link. It supports external control of parameters through MIDI (with a midi learn option) and in Audio Unit mode has a built-in, detailed description of all parameters."

Korg Electribe with SoundSaw app

video upload by Igor Vasiliev

"This video shows the sound processing of the drum machine Korg Electribe by the SoundSaw app, without additional effects and processing. It gives the specific lofi sound with a lot of overdrive and saturation. The SoundSaw app is great for processing the sound of drum machines. As one component and the mix.

SoundSaw is a complex sound processing app with easy-to-use controls designed to distort the sound of musical instruments or voice, and give the sound the aesthetics and atmosphere of noise, lo-fi, chiptune and experimental music scene.

Depending on the settings, it can add light distortion and saturation to the sound for a more natural and lively sound, or drastically change the sound and make it as loud and harsh as possible, full of all kinds of harmonics, crackles and rattles. The settings of this app provide great opportunities for experiments with sound destruction.

The SoundSaw works on iPhone and iPad standalone and as Audio Unit with external parameters, and is also compatible with Ineter-app Audio hosts and Audiobus."

SoundSaw - The Art Of Sound Destruction (presets demo)

video upload by Igor Vasiliev

New iOS app from Igor Vasiliev who brought us SynthScaper, SynthScaper LE, FiedScaper, Classic FX, BeatCutter, and SoundScaper.

"SoundSaw is a complex sound processing app with easy-to-use controls designed to distort the sound of musical instruments or voice, and give the sound the aesthetics and atmosphere of noise, lo-fi, chiptune and experimental music scene."

The settings of this app provide great opportunities for experiments with sound destruction.

All controls are located on a single screen, grouped by function into six sections with a plain way of signal path from the first section "Input" to the last section "Output". The chain of individual effects in this app is designed in such a way as to get the most interesting result for any parameter values in the widest possible range.

App features:

- Simulates different types of signal processing electronic circuits and their typical harmonic saturation and noise (static and dynamic).
- The Maximizer keeps the maximum signal level for more noticeable distortions and feedback effects, and has a mode for hold the maximum volume when the input signal decays.
- The Overload effect works like an electronic circuit when the signal is much higher than the maximum allowable level and oversaturated the signal various kinds of harmonics.
- The Decimator and Bitcrusher effects produce very noticeable digital artifacts typical of cheap devices with simple DACs / ADCs, and add various kinds of crackles and rattles.
- The Feedback effect is similar to acoustic feedback, but more controllable, with the resonant frequency varying in accordance with the harmonics of the input signal.
- The 4-pole filter controlled by the envelope generator can be used after distortion effects. Filter types: Low pass, High pass, Band pass and Notch.
- The envelope generator is controlled by the input signal and can generate a single cycle of envelope, repeat cycles or work continuously.
- At the output there is a filter that can cut the high or low range of the original signal and mix it with the processed signal."

Classical chaos

video by Igor Vasiliev

"Main piano theme created by Rauf Kasimov using the iGrand Piano app.

Chaotic textures were created using the BeatCutter app on iPad with external sound card Focusrite Scarlett 6i6. BeatCutter can use up to four input channels to fill the matrix of samples and construct abstract rhythmic structures from fragments of the original sound.

The four sound sources for this app were synths - Moog Slim phatty thru TC Helicon Voice works, Clavia Nord Lead 3 with Doepher Dark Time sequencer thru Roland SDE-2000, Korg MS2000, Roland Juno-60 thru Eventide Harmonizer H949. All of these synth also were recorded directly and mixed with BeatCutter output. Outputs from all instruments and the BeatCutter app were recorded on a Tascam 38 and then mixed. Reverbs AKG ADR68K, Yamaha REV7 were used for mixing.

BeatCutter is an experimental multi-channel app for slicing and recombining sound based on rhythm. In the center of the app is a matrix of sample cells with smoothly reconfigurable recording, playback and control busses. This app is best for those who would like to experiment with large audio files or live instruments, creating chaotic constructions and patterns from sliced rhythm-driven samples."

BeatCutter - Feedback demo

video by Igor Vasiliev

Audio comes in at 1:37.

"The feedback mode is one of the most interesting features of the BeatCutter app. This is not like analog feedback when positive loop gain occurs at some more or less stable resonant frequency. It looks more like fractals when the next level is similar to the whole structure, but in this case with constantly changes. We can say that it works like a sound structure that evolves and changes itself. This is an incredible ability to create perfect sound abstractions, unrelated to any external samples or signals and it opens up a huge potential for experimentation and inspiration.
