TUNE THE WORLD - THE FLOWSTATE CONCEPT
The idea behind Flowstate was based on a video by Ayako Okamura in which she used filter resonance to “tune” field recordings to precise pitches. It was a nice trick, and seemed a fun way to introduce pitch to non-pitched sound. We used this technique for sound design in our Geosonics II instrument.

Soniccouture Releases Tonal Drums: The First Ever Tunable Acoustic Drum Kit VI

Built on the acclaimed Sun Drums engine, Tonal Drums combines all the velocity layers and articulations with unmatched control over tuning, expression and tone.

In recent years, drum tuning has undergone a renaissance. Devices like TuneBot and apps like iDrumTunePro have given drummers more precision and insight when tuning their drums. Youtube is filled with videos relating to drum tuning, and this has helped demystify it. And while it is certainly true that you do not need to tune your drums to notes to fit the key of your track, many people feel that doing this can give an extra musical edge to a production.

Thus, the idea to sample a full drum kit at multiple different tunings was born. Soniccouture Tonal Drums does exactly that - the result a painstaking recording session where each piece of the kit was carefully tuned to a note, sampled in detail with plenty of articulations + velocity layers, then retuned to the next note and the process repeated. Recorded at Rockfield Studios UK.

A beautiful & fascinating African instrument, the Kora is hard to classify. With 21 strings and a cow-hide resonator, it's a type of bridge harp, but with some lute or guitar DNA in the mix.

The kora is made from a gourd, which is cut in half and covered with cow hide. This forms the resonator of the instrument. There are 21 strings, suspended by a double notched bridge - 10 on one side, 11 on the other. This is typical of a double harp and it is classified as such. However, because the strings originate from a 'neck' and cross a bridge into a resonator, this also makes it a lute.

Soniccouture’s VST version is incredibly playable and versatile, featuring a MIDI pattern player for authentic accompaniment.

For our first string library, we thought we’d aim for something a little different from the many string libraries already on the market. The focus in THRENODY is on avant-garde string articulations, such as those you hear in late 20th century orchestral music or science fiction film soundtracks. Although we did a few standard articulations as well, this library is full of col legno clattering, clusters, various ‘clouds’ of activity, glissandi, etc.

THRENODY features a massive string section of 60 musicians (16-14-12-10-8). We used over 30 microphones in the hall, and these have been mixed down to three stereo channels: the main tree, the spot mics, and the ambience mics.

THRENODY features 26 different articulations sampled across the entire orchestral range, which can be layered with an XY controller to create entirely new orchestral shapes and movements.
