Africa by Toto on Musical Tesla Coils

Franzoli Electronics

"For those who did not understand what is going on this video, here's a brief explanation: The main loud music really comes from the tesla coil sparks. They are literally playing the music due to the programmed phase, pulse width and firing frequency! So, there are no speakers, no audio / video special effects. It looks even better in person and sounds almost the same, just without the beat / percussion backing track.

I hope you all enjoy this version where I worked for musical tesla coils!"

MIDIfied Tesla Coils

Published on Sep 19, 2018 Jason Hotchkiss

"Just about ready with 'Tesla Organ' for Fort Process sound art festival this weekend in Newhaven, UK https://fortprocess.co.uk/

This is a quick test with a MIDI file of Bach's Toccata & Fugue in Dm

Two solid state coils based on Steve Wards design with connected secondaries, floating ground and independant feedback antennae. Running at c.100VAC.

MIDI file played from a PC into a PIC microcontroller which generates 2 voices of square wave audio, optically linked to the SSTC drivers"

Tesla coils controlled by Stylophone!

Published on Sep 19, 2018 Jason Hotchkiss

"My MIDI controlled Tesla coils controlled by my Stylophone MIDI controller... it had to happen!

All sound is from the coil and it does sound more musical IRL (excluding my playing) but the crackling of the arcing does drown out the notes when recorded on my camera"

DRUM PAD PLUGGED UP TO A 2000 VOLT JACOBS LADDER

Published on Feb 19, 2017 LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER

"It had to be done! wiring up a 2000 Volt Jacobs Ladder to a drum pad to make it musical!

kind of sounds like a special effects crash or something. but With ADDED SPARKS.

Built from a microwave. and some tinfoil. its definately a bit of a hack. and tends to overheat and smoke! wait for the end to see the fireworks.

completely live. on a home built Modular synth... the drum pads on the top trigger kick and snare. and 2 completely seperate synth voices for each of the 2 synth notes. these go into an arduino powered beat recorder. so only had to play the riff once and it automatically records it and re plays it, planning on doing a how to of that soon for people who want to build one. ran out of drum pads so used 2 toy drums with piezo mics glues onto them. there is a footswitch too which turns on an extra channel which the bass goes through an electro harmonix POG and some distortion for extra dynamic bits.

middle part is just a delay that one of the toy drum pads was going through. the great thing with the pt2399 delay is it stops working if the voltage goes too low. so the extreme end of the knob twist just shuts down the delay, making it great to turn on and off quickly and easily.

The Jacobs ladder was just mic'd up. tried keeping it as far away from the modular as possible to isolate the awesome sound it makes. but inevitably theres some bleed from the noise drum pads."

3 Tesla Coils, Robotic Drums and Bass

3 Tesla Coils, Robotic Drums and Bass from K X on Vimeo.

"This is an experimental drum 'n bass piece written for 3 Tesla coils, a robotic drum kit and robotic bass guitar.

The leads are performed by a Plasmasonic Dual Resonance Solid State Tesla Coil (DRSSTC), and the accompanying parts by 2 microBrute DRSSTCs. The Tesla coils are controlled by the Chime Red musical Tesla coil control system created by Josh Bailey and James McVay.

The bass part is played by the Mechbass robotic bass guitar which was created by James McVay and Jim Murphy.

All sounds were recorded directly from the instruments with microphones in the space shown, with no added tracks.

Big thanks to the above-mentioned people for all of their hard work, and to Victoria University of Wellington for facilitating the creation of this work."

Published on Feb 3, 2013

"This is just a test setup to show the functionality of my DRSSTC midi controller when connected to a keyboard. This box directly controls the musical coils via a fiber optic link.

I have it connected to a pair of speakers for this demo so I didn't have to setup all the coil stuff.

Forgive my crappy playing, I'm an engineer after all!"

Musical Tesla Coil - Midi Interrupter Kit

Published on Mar 4, 2013 thegeekgroup·477 videos

"http://www.thegeekgroup.org - Chris and Paul solder the components onto the circuit board for our Mini Musical Tesla Coil Kit. Watch step-by-step as the interrupter board comes together. The board is then demonstrated on TGG's mini Tesla Coil.

They are $50 a piece in our store: http://thegeekgroup.org/store/kits/te...

Our Solid State Tesla Coil Interrupter has been designed to be fully arduino compatible. We worked very hard to make it fully polytonal, which means it can play chords of up to 12 notes simultaneously (assuming a 75MHz processor is used). The board is linked via a fibre optic cable to the SSTC. Music is interpreted via a MIDI input that can be generated via any instrument or even directly from a PC. Or any number of midi files can be played directly from an SD card using the onboard micro SD reader. A button on the board is used to skip to the next file on the card. Two LEDs indicate the various states the board is in.

This whole project is fully Open Source. Several software examples are provided via a CC+BY+NC license.

Haken Continuum Meets Tesla - Risky Business, Moog, The Cars Let's Go

Tesla Coil Music - Island at the Center of the World - Part II: The Strangers

YouTube via marksmartus2 | January 22, 2011 | 0 likes, 0 dislikes

"Recorded live in Urbana, Illinois on March 7, 2008. This outdoor concert was part of a student-run open house for the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois. Tesla coils were used to create musical pitches via a control system designed by university student Steve Ward. Two coils were used. The right coil is playing a prerecorded Midi track, acting as the bass, and the left one is performed live as a lead sound via the Continuum fingerboard. In spite of the frigid temperatures (4 degrees Fahrenheit, 26 mph winds), the concert was well attended and was voted the most popular event of the open house.

This is the second part of a prog-rock piece by Mark Smart about the history of Easter Island."

"The fret board is 72 optically isolated switches. The fret board, instead of frets has 6 brass contacts per fret. When the string is pushed down to the contact, it makes a connection.

From there the signal is optically isolated, to protect from EMF and sent to a micro controller thats only job is to priority encode the fretboard, and keep tabs on which string is pushed down to each fret.

So priority encoding means this basically: if you are playing the 6th string on the 12th fret, then the computer ignores if say the 11th and 10th frets are pressed on that string also, since the 12th fret needs to take priority - just like a real guitar..."

YouTube via wshsbro — May 23, 2010 — "ArcAttack employs a unique DJ set up of their own creation to generate an 'electrifying' audio visual performance. The HVDJ pumps music through a PA system while two specially designed DRSSTC's (Dual-Resonant Solid State Tesla Coils) act as separate synchronized instruments.
