Dutch Modular Fest 2023 Set for This Saturday 2nd of September

via ThreeTom Modular

"This Saturday, 2nd of September, it’s time for Dutch Modular Fest 2023.

Come check out my new module 'Doppio' and be the first to actually own one. I’ll have a limited number of modules for sale during the market (before the online launch). I will also have a small number of assembled MS-22 modules for sale, and plenty of full DIY kits. While you’re at my booth, also check out my Mixing Flask prototype. Mixing Flask is my personal take on an exciting utility mixer, with soft clipping and +6dB of gain on each input (and lots of purdy lights!🤩)

I’m really looking forward to meeting you all (again)! 😘"

You can find event details at https://www.dutchmodularfest.com

SUPERBOOTH24 Set for May 16 - 18, 2024

Press Release follows:

Berlin, the 28th of August 2023

The SUPERBOOTH BERLIN is happy to announce the date for the next edition of Superbooth: SUPERBOOTH24 will be happening from the 16th to the 18th of May 2024 at FEZ-Berlin.

Pre-sale tickets for SB24 will be available from the first of November 2023. Brands and manufacturers that are interested in exhibiting at SB24 can already contact us. More information regarding SB24 will follow in the fall.

For the SUPERBOOTH BERLIN, even during the beginning of this year being able to securely plan for 2024 was not a given. Like many large-scale events and festivals, the Superbooth had faced substantial financial difficulties due to pandemic-related cancellations and restrictions. This year’s SB23 was the first Superbooth that could happen without restrictions since 2019, and its success was crucial in deciding the future of the event.

As such, the SUPERBOOTH BERLIN is belated to announce that SUPERBOOTH23 was a resounding success that was able to secure the continuation of the event. As the biggest and most successful Superbooth to date, SB23 trumped even the previous record year 2019 with over 250 exhibitors from all the world and over 9000 visitors and participants.

Even on social media, SUPERBOOTH23 was more present than ever, perhaps because of the event’s continued, but amplified focus on inclusivity and diversity in the electronic music technology industry, a direction that was welcomed enthusiastically by most of the Superbooth’s visitors and participants. With initiatives such as the “Minibooth” for children and adolescents, workshops for women and nonbinary people and a women’s quota in the performance booking, the SUPERBOOTH23 attempted to showcase a way towards a more open and inclusive future of electronic music-making.

The various musical performance stages gave the SB23 the character of a music festival, with a musical focus on special live performances that fall outside the reach of typical large-scale festival bookings. The new session stage brought new genres such as dub, reggae, and different forms of bass music to the event. In the evening hours, the ever-popular Strandbühne (beach stage) with its relaxed vibe and various catering offerings conjured an atmosphere that lived up to the energy of a proper music festival.

During SB23, attendees often remarked that there was a noticeable relaxed, perhaps even euphoric atmosphere that could be felt all across the event. The Superbooth’s unique concept of a “trade fair with the spirit of a festival” has once again proven itself as something unique within the world of electronic music.

For 2024, the SUPERBOOTH BERLIN will further build on the success of 2023 but of course also attempt to make the event even better, so that it can continue to live up to its status as the world’s biggest trade fair for electronic musical instruments. As such, the SUPERBOOTH BERLIN is open and thankful for feedback of any kind (e-mail: info@superbooth.com).

Fantasia Announces Discover Maywa Denki Event at 27th Edition, July 20-August 9

Press release follows:

Cool Kawaii Musical Toys From Japan!
Discover Maywa Denki and Otamatoons at Fantasia 2023

Montreal, Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival, North America’s largest and longest-lived genre film festival, is proud to welcome Japanese musical toy pop-culture company Maywa Denki and its co-founder Novmichi Tosa, as well as the world premiere of the Otamatoon short film series (co-produced by Maywa Denki and Slowcurve Co.) at its 2023 edition, July 20 – August 9!

Visit any variety store or musical instrument shop in Japan, and it’s likely that you’ll find a rack devoted to a novelty toy synthesizer called the Otamatone, a strange device with a small but dedicated global fan base. Coming in a variety of sizes, the simple electronic musical instrument with the appearance of a cartoon eighth note, first issued in 2010, is the best known of the many creations of Maywa Denki. The Tokyo-based company reconciles high art and lowbrow commerce, democratizing creativity while legitimizing silly fun as a noble pursuit.

At the heart of Maywa Denki is its co-founder, inventor, musician, artist, and entrepreneur Novmichi Tosa. On the cultural map, he could be situated somewhere between Devo and Blue Man Group, Harry Partch and Alexander Calder, and Akihiro Yokoi and Aki Maita (inventors of the Tamagotchi). His latest project, with his Maywa Denki colleagues and anime development firm Slowcurve Co., is the OTAMATOON series of short, wordless video vignettes, using MIDI and animatronics to bring the Otamatone and its assortment of associated kawaii noisemakers to life.

Not only is Fantasia proudly presenting the world premieres of the first five OTAMATOONS, which will pop up before various feature films in our schedule, the festival is welcoming Tosa-san himself for DISCOVER MAYWA DENKI, a free artist talk/workshop event. It’s an introduction to Maywa Denki’s history, an encounter with its most popular products in action, an unveiling of the OTAMATOON series, and a chance to meet Tosa-san in person, as well as purchase Maywa Denki items rarely seen in North America!

Discover Maywa Denki event (free admission):

Friday, July 28, 7 p.m.

Live Hardware Electronic Music featuring SKYGAS and rocketmermaid

video upload by Patchwerks

"Showroom Sessions are a great chance to enjoy live music from our incredibly talented community and link up with friends old and new in a casual environment, connecting over a shared love of electronic music and all its devices.

𝙎𝙆𝙔𝙂𝘼𝙎 is the new moniker of Seattle's Ian Price, known as the figure behind the unhinged Bonkers parties of the Northwest and the Pleasure Boat Records label, after years spent building gear and changing direction. Under this new pseudonym, the debut SkyGas album is the sound of a seasoned musician walking away from modern production and back into primordial sound. The result is a perpetual horizon machine focused on themes of joy, solitude, and impermanence, described as “new age with abrasions.”

Julia Davis (aka RocketMermaid) has been tinkering with musical oddities for 25 years, using everything from tracking programs from the demoscene to banging pipes against the walls of an Indiana basement. Since relocating to Seattle, she's fallen in love with modular synthesis and has incorporated it into her works, ranging from airy ambient to crushing industrial.

OMBIENT: Live!@EMEAPP (4/22/23)

video upload by EMEAPP

"This was a fun night. On April 22, 2023 we held our first video shoot in our live studio space with an audience in attendance with Ombient and Electric Diamond on the bill.

Ombient (Mike Hunter) was the opening performer on the bill and in the space of 30 minutes, he took the entire room on an electronic sonic journey complete with custom projections by PYXL8R. Armed with his custom Synthesizers.com modular system, Koma Elektronik Komplex Sequencer, Rhodes Chroma, Oberheim Matrix-6, ARP 2600 re-issue and a slew of effects, Ombient's performance was ultimately a swirling, constantly evolving set reminiscent of artists such as Tangerine Dream and Ashra.

A big thank you to Ombient (Mike Hunter), PXYL8R (Ken Palmer) Electric Diamon (Stuart Diamond, Don Slepian and Karen Bentley Pollick) and to all of our volunteers for helping to make this night a well-oiled and enjoyable experience for all.

You can find us at www.emeapp.org where we invite you to join us as a member."

Happy Knobbing Modular Synthesizer Meeting Fischbach 2023

video upload by Wein Glas

"This is a short tour showing the modular systems that were arranged on the Happy Knobbing 2023 in Fischbach!

The HK2023 was not only "Gearporn" or "Synthporn". It was more like "Love, Peace and Happiness" far away from a bigger city!

But much more imprtant: It was about meeting friends, talking, drinking, eating, making noises, music, techno, ...

And it became more international. So we are not just a German (and Swiss) Synth Meet anymore.

The soundtrack was made with a small 4U system you can see at the end of the video by Soundfreak (the triple EMS oscillator), Synthomas (281 and 292 quad resonant lowpass gate), Eardrill pendulum Ratchet and Kilpatrick K4816.

Thanks to Tommy and all others!"

The Seventh Wave Festival of Electronic Music - Number 11 Coming to the UK, October 2023

A brief history of The Seventh Wave Festival of Electronic Music

video upload by The Seventh Wave

Wolfgang Flür (Ex-Kraftwerk) + Banco de Gaia + Nathan Fake + Pye Corner Audio + GLOK [Andy Bell - Oasis/Ride]

The Seventh Wave
Festival of Electronic Music: Number Eleven

A member of Kraftwerk during the group’s golden era, Wolfgang Flür was the band’s electronic percussionist from 1973 to 1987.

The Seventh Wave’s Eleventh Electronic Music Festival starts its journey at the iconic The Water Rats venue in London before setting sail to The Castle & Falcon (one of the most exciting venues in Birmingham) where it will be delivering a plethora of electronic delights over three nights.

In October of 2023 the eleventh ‘The Seventh Wave Festival of Electronic Music’ takes place across four days. For a relatively small festival The Seventh Wave continues to get some of the biggest names in electronic music.

This time around you can feast your eyes (and ears!) on some of the most cutting edge artists in electronic music today.

On Thursday’s and Friday’s events Wolfgang Flür will be the main attraction, with sterling support coming from Peter Duggal (who collaborates with Wolfgang in addition to being an outstanding performer in his own right). Birmingham also has Graham Chapman-Fox who brings his post-utopian electronic music project (Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan) to the second city for the first time.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Wolfgang Flür became the third member of Kraftwerk in 1973. He was a member of the group from their international breakthrough with the album Autobahn (1974) and remained as they experimented with proto techno on albums such as Trans-Europe Express (1977) and Computer World (1981). This is a very rare opportunity to see Wolfgang Flür live. Even better still, the Birmingham show has the added bonus of a talk/Q&A with the opportunity for 50 lucky people to be given the chance to listen to tales of Kraftwerk in an intimate bar room setting before the gig starts in earnest.

On Saturday evening, it is in effect a double headlining performance. Banco de Gaia’s debut LP 'Maya' received a Mercury Music Prize nomination and Nathan Fake’s interest in electronic music came from acts like Aphex Twin & Orbital but he takes those influences as a starting point and has moved them on and added to them exponentially.

Last but not least, the Sunday evening is another double headlining show. Pye Corner Audio (a highly respected and regarded British electronic music project by Martin Jenkins) performs after Andy Bell of RIDE and OASIS who is taking his electronic project (GLOK) for a spin this October.

All artists will be accompanied by ‘visuals’ and a special mention goes to Innerstrings (who works with Ulrich Schnauss among other) and he will be providing ‘live visuals’ for GLOK.

Tickets can be purchased for the individual paid events from Skiddle at

https://www.skiddle.com/groups/theseventhwave/

Live at the New England Synth Fest

video upload by Jeremy Parker

"My good friend and musical collaborator, @cowboybenalman @TheEntireRobot , invited me to join him at the Spring 2023 New England Synth Festival, where we performed a live set. This was my first time performing at a synthesizer festival, so it was a great opportunity to get to know and participate in the local synth community. It was held in Burlington, MA and included a slew of other performers, lectures and workshops throughout the day. Thank you @newenglandsynthfest for having us, and thanks to the visual synth artists Vidumami and Allison Tanenhaus who provided the video backdrop for our set.

I used my @ArturiaOfficial Polybrute, @KorgOfficial Minikorg 700fs and the Elektron Analog Rytm MKII. Ben used various gear, including the @MoogMusicInc Sirin, Arturia Keystep 37, @EricaSynths Perkons HD-01, among other things.
