Extremely Rare Vintage Maxon Mariner MX-2 Keyboard Synthesizer

This one in via electraumatisme.

So how rare? I've never seen or come across one in the ten years of running MATRIXSYNTH. This appears to be the first Maxon Mariner MX-2 post on the site out of 128,070 posts on the site including this one to date. Tracking everything synth seven days a week, it's a super rare treat coming across a vintage synthesizer you've never seen before. If anyone knows more about the Mariner feel free to leave a comment. There are 14 previous Maxon posts mainly for their drum synth and effects.

The Mariner appears to have the following sections:

- Tune
- Tone Source with two oscillators
- Noise Source
- Modulator Section with one LFO and four destinations
- Resonant Filter with ENV modulation and Pitch knob
- ADSR, Transpose, Source Select, Bender Select & Portamento controls to the left of the keyboard

The description from the listing follows in French followed by a Googlish translation to English.

via the seller: "The drum sounds are triggered via the inputs on the left side of the device. I used the individual outputs of a Roland drum machine as my trigger source. You can use each channel independently, or trigger them at the same time for more complex layered sounds.

I find the DS200 works best for boomy kicks and space drum toms, but I've also been able to coax hi hat and bell-ish sounds out of it by using both channels pitched up and detuned.

This vintage drum synth is still in great shape and would certainly make an excellent addition to your classic instrument collection."

"A pretty rare electronic drum module from Maxon (circa late 70's / early 80's). Same as the Tama DS200, which was the branded version for the US.

This is a Japanese unit (100V), which is why it is badged Maxon, that will work in the US. However, please note that a step up voltage converter is highly recommended to prolong the life of the electronics especially if you're not using a regulated power conditioner. For example, if you plug this directly into the wall, your household voltage can fluctuate anywhere from 110-130 V. At the high end, that's driving the unit 30% over recommended voltage.

It's in nice overall shape for a vintage module with some wear (scratches and marks, more so on the top, sides, and edges). See pics for the cosmetic details.

The sounds are analog triggered (drum pads, gate/trigger signals, audio) and the characteristics of the signal can affect the envelope of the drum sound.

There's a wide range of space drum type sounds that can be dialed in with a wide pitch range down to sub bass and you can get some booming and thumping kick drum sounds similar to an 808 or 909 with the right settings."

Maxon PH-350 Rotary Phaser

"Like all the Maxon Vintage Series models, the PH-350 Rotary Phaser was designed to offer an extremely versatile effect unit that provides consistent, low-noise, transparent operation. The PH-350's features were selected after careful study of other phasing units in order to provide as varied and useful a tone palette as possible. Likewise, certain functions and features were disregarded in order to keep performance intuitive and trouble-free.

Like the CP101 and AF-9, the PH-350 circuit uses CdS Photocouplers to achieve its unique voice. While extremely popular in the 1970s, Photocoupler's have generally been abandoned in modern circuits due to their high cost, large size, and wide tolerance ranges. However, their resulting tone simply cannot be replicated using other components a truly liquid, vowel-like, three-dimensional phasing effect that is only compounded by the PH-350's multiple control parameters. To maximize performance, the PH-350's Photocouplers are matched for the smoothest phase shifting possible.

In addition to the standard Rate and Depth controls to vary speed and intensity of the phasing effect, the PH-350 also features switchable four, six, and ten stage phasing. As the phasing stages increase, the effect becomes more dramatic as focus is placed on the upper register harmonics. By changing the amount of phasing stages the PH-350 can emulate a wide variety of phase shifters, from classic units of the 1970's all the way to modern-day models.

Like the CS-550, the PH-350's third rotary control is its secret weapon. The PH-350's Feedback control features a center-detent at 12 o'clock which allows for both positive-phase and negative-phase feedback. Positive-phase feedback works in the standard way to increase the peak points of the phase signal as the control is turned clockwise. Negative-phase feedback works by "breaking" the peak points of the phase signal and "dephasing" the original signal. The resulting reversed-phase signal is delayed slightly from the original, creating a dramatic "scooped" effect unique to the PH-350. The Feedback control is calibrated to reach self-oscillation at either extreme, yielding a further array of bizarre oscillation effects.

Lastly, the PH-350's stereo outputs allow panning of the effect between two amplifiers or channels. The PH-350's ultra-wide frequency response and low noise allow it to process line level signals as well as standard instrument signals.

Ideal for the studio, essential for live performance, the PH-350 Rotary Phaser supplies a virtually unlimited array of classic and modern phasing effects.

"This is a Maxon DS-200 analog drum synthesizer which is a re-branded Tama DS-200. It looks and sounds exactly the same.
It was made in the late 70's, before Tama came out with the Techstar series. It sounds much warmer than the techstar in my opinion.(I personally still own both units).
Wonderful device for beeps, blips, disco hits and other strange space sounds...

The Maxon DS200 drum synthesizer has two oscillators that can be triggered via ¼” audio jacks mounted on the front of the unit.

Parameters that can be controlled are Sensitivity, Tune, Sweep Time, Sweep Range, Decay and output Level and arange of synthesized percussion can be created and customized.
Oscillators can be switched on or off via a front mounted switch, As well as the option for a foot pedal via ¼” jack.

The unit is a 100V unit but I will include a 110-130V to 100V converter. (see photo)

Please note - for countries with 220V-230V voltage, you'll need to use a 220V - 100V step down voltage converter (can be found in any electronics store)."
