Prototype Controller from Bob Moog

via the Bob Moog Foundation blog on the upcoming Museum Exhibit, Waves of Inspiration. The Legacy of Moog. See the link for more. Keith Emerson will be performing.

"The exhibit will also include many artifacts from other private collections including the Moog Modular prototype previously owned by Herb Deutsch, a full Moog Modular IIIC and a working and extremely rare Eaton-Moog Multi-Touch Sensitive Keyboard loaned by avant garde opera composer John Eaton. Of particular note, Keith Emerson’s (Emerson, Lake and Palmer) custom built “Monster Moog” synthesizer will be displayed for the first month of the exhibition along with notes and schematics from Bob’s archives regarding the instrument." Note I gave this post the DIY label, just to make the point that it all starts with DIY. Click on the image.

Update: the following official newsletter came in from the Bob Moog Foundation on the event. I thought I would capture it here for the archives.

See the pictures.

The Museum of Making Music, a division of the NAMM Foundation, is a small museum located 35 miles north of San Diego. The museum is dedicated to the exploration of the multifaceted history of the American music products industry from its beginnings in the 1890s to today. The Bob Moog Foundation has been planning this exhibit over a year and a half ago with the museum’s Executive Director, Carolyn Grant and Curator, Tatiana Sezinenko. Moog historian Brian Kehew has been involved as the consultant for the exhibit and is responsible for introducing the two parties at Winter NAMM 2008.

Here at the Foundation we regard Bob’s archives as a fascinating testament to history, innovation, and a lifetime of perseverance. Since retrieving the archives from unstable storage conditions in January of 2006, we have worked to preserve and protect this priceless collection that traces the 50 year career of a dedicated pioneer. With this exhibit, we are delighted to be sharing an extensive part of the archives with the public for the first time.

A special thanks to Carolyn Grant and Tatiana Sezinenko for their generous energy and thoughtful attention to telling a rich, fascinating story with an emphasis on accurately portraying Bob Moog as the toolmaker he so often described himself to be while giving careful consideration to the many people who make up the Moog Legacy. Thanks also to Brian Kehew who has worked (and will be working over the next six weeks!) tirelessly to help bring this exhibit to fruition. Finally, our deepest thanks to Douglas Babb, who made the trek from Indiana to North Carolina five times (on his own dime) to help us sort out and understand Bob’s archives.

We encourage all of you who are in the San Diego area to attend this unique exhibit. It will be an excellent opportunity to share in the life and work of Bob Moog – and for all you gearheads out there, it will be a chance to see many rare, if not one-of-a-kind pieces. Come share in the legacy that continues to inspire!

Continue to check our blog and the museum’s website for updates.

MSA Remote + VDMX + Ableton Live

MSA Remote + VDMX + Ableton Live from Memo Akten on Vimeo.

"MSA Remote is a remote control application for iPhone & iPod Touch that sends OSC messages over the wifi network. This allows you to control any OSC supporting applications such as Max/MSP/Jitter, PureData, Reaktor, VDMX, vvvv, Resolume, Quartz Composer etc.

In this video, OSCulator is routing the OSC (& TUIO) messages coming from MSA Remote to midi and forwarding to Ableton Live and VDMX simultaneously. Nothing is done in post, the same signal is controlling both audio and video.

At the beginning of the video you can see the polyphonic velocity sensitive keys in action (yes, the harder you hit the keys, the louder the sound - works equally well when the iphone is laid on a table), and later on the faders, triggers and multitouch tuio-pad.

You can see MSA Remote controlling a Java fluid simulation at vimeo.com/3975324

There is a slight lag in the video feed so apologies for that.

Should be in the app store soon.

miniMusic Pianofly

Pianofly Intro

YouTube via LintLabs

"miniMusic releases the innovative Pianofly for iPhone and iPod Touch

San Francisco, Calif., May 4th, 2009 - miniMusic has released Pianofly, a music synthesizer and piano keyboard for Apple's iPhone platform. Pianofly includes never before seen features like a scrolling, multi-touch keyboard. Sound is generated by an powerful FM synthesizer, with an elegant interface allowing anyone to create and edit instrument sounds easily. Make quick adjustments while performing, altering sounds on the fly!

The first feature you notice in Pianofly is the keyboard. Other piano applications for the iPhone generally show just one octave of keys, then use tiny arrow buttons to shift up or down an octave. Hogwash. That's the kind of piano you'd use with a mouse! The keyboard in Pianofly moves with you, scrolling as you play; let your fingers fly up and down the full 88 key piano! This is how on-screen pianos always wanted to work, but didn't know how.

Then you notice the sounds. Eight pages full of customizable instrument icons. Just tap one and start playing. Want to design your own instrument timbre? Of course you do; double tap on an icon and the editor is revealed. You actually see the waves and adjust their lengths to set frequencies and change waveforms. Rewire the nodes for modulation. Double tap on a node and edit its ADSR envelope for smooth amplitude changes: give it a hard, fast attack or fade it in slowly, rising gently on the breeze. Don't forget to use any photo or image to make the perfect icon for your new instrument.

Pianofly can make a huge variety of sounds. You can play them alone, or jam with a song from your music library. A great way for DJs to add cool effects over their playlist or for students to practice. Come out of your musical cocoon; make music anywhere with Pianofly in your pocket.

Planned improvements include multi-track recording and additional wave types and effects like reverb or flange to design even more elaborate sounds. The sky is the limit for Pianofly (are you getting all of these puns?).

COST AND AVAILABILITY
Pianofly is available now from the App Store at an introductory price of only $1.99 USD. After the introductory period, the normal price will be $2.99 or higher as additional features are added.

ABOUT MINIMUSIC
Pianofly is the first iPhone product from miniMusic, which has been developing award winning, mobile music software for the Palm OS since 1999. Over the years miniMusic built an entire suite of music tools for the Palm platform including: notation and pattern sequencing, MIDI playback and mixing, sound design, MIDI control surfaces, wave sampling and editing, and educational titles for sight reading and ear training.

miniMusic is already working on several new titles building on the Pianofly foundation; their second product for iPhone will be available this summer, with several more titles by the end of the year. Lint Labs has also been launched as the non-music wing of miniMusic, currently offering an innovative drawing program for the iPhone called "No.2" (like a No.2 pencil... that's "HB pencil" in some countries). We used No.2 to draw some of the sound icons in Pianofly!

Visit www.miniMusic.com for more information, video demonstrations, and documentation."

Update: The press release:
"Smule™ Launches Leaf Trombone World Stage

First Massively Multi-player, Musical Game for the iPhone and iPod touch

Menlo Park, Calif. – April 15, 2009 – SonicMule, Inc. (Smule), a premier developer of interactive sonic applications for the iPhone platform, announced today the availability of Leaf Trombone World Stage, the world’s first massively multi-player musical game for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Smule, the company behind Ocarina and Sonic Lighter, presented a sneak peek of the Leaf Trombone World Stage at Apple’s iPhone 3.0 event last month. As the name suggests, anyone can perform a tune on the Leaf Trombone before a global audience. A player can also request a panel of self-appointed judges, randomly selected from anywhere in the world, providing an instant critique of the performance, using a combination of emoticons and text. Judges can reward a performance or veto it mid-note.

The World Stage will separate the Music Gods from the Wannabes. “People can play at home, alone, as badly as they want. It’s like singing in the shower. Where’s the challenge? The thrill?” asks Smule CTO and co-founder Dr. Ge Wang. “We are inviting people to abandon their egos and put it all out there, before a global audience and a potentially merciless tribunal.”

Inspired by traditional Chinese leaf instruments, Smule’s Leaf Trombone is ideally suited to both the iPhone and iPod touch platform. Users move the slide up and down to change pitch, and, with iPhones, blow into the microphone to create sound. Leaf Trombone ships with a group of songs already loaded, so users can immediately begin learning how to play the instrument. A music box provides accompaniment, and floating leaves show beginners where to place the slide to achieve the correct note. Once users have mastered a song, they’re ready to perform on the World Stage.

“Leaf Trombone was developed to unleash people’s creativity and their inner rock star.” said Wang. “Now, with the Leaf Trombone, anyone can perform on the World Stage.”

Kawai K5000s

via this auction

"The K5000 was Kawai's top of the line music workstation digital synthesizer when it was released back in 1996. It's a bold and elegantly designed synth with a large LCD display, realtime controls and incredible sounds! The look and functionality is rivals the competition from the time...the Korg Trinity and Kurzweil K2500.
Programming sounds with the K5000 can be a breeze (once you learn how) although it has over 1,000 parameters per patch! That's plenty to play with. It combines additive synthesis and PCM sampled waveforms for you to layer and combine to design a whole range of sounds. Plenty of LFO modulation, filters and envelope controls allow you to shape and morph your sounds further. On-board multi-effects add the final touch of life to your sounds.
Once you've created some sounds, there's the on-board sequencer (K5000W only) for creating songs or loading Standard Midi File sequences (via disk-drive). It has a 40,000 note capacity and 40 tracks. Real-time record and step-edit modes are available and the sequencer is pretty straight forward.
The K5000S (this auction item) adds 12 dedicated knobs for hands-on control of filter, LFO and envelope parameters. There are 4 user-definable knobs and 2 assignable switches. The K5000S also has a 40-pattern arpeggiator on-board with 8 user-definable patterns too!

Features
# Polyphony - 32 voices
# Oscillators - Digital Additive Synthesis plus PCM samples; Harmonics: 64 per source; Waveforms: 689 (123 synth, 341 GM, 225 drums)
# Effects - 4 effects algorithms with 32 different effects
# Filter - 128-band formant filter, 24dB/oct low-pass and high-pass
# LFO - 2 (one for formant filter, one can be freely routed to other destinations)
# VCA - 1 ASDR per part, with key scale and velocity
# Sequencer/Arpeg - Sequencer: 40 tracks, 40,000 note capacity
# Arpeggiator: 40 patterns, 8 user
# Keyboard - 61 Keys with velocity and aftertouch
# Memory - 200 patches, 64 performances"

VX-64 Vocal Strip is a seven-stage processor designed specifically for shaping and sculpting incredible sounding vocal tracks. Each of the VX-64's stages have been fine-tuned to be vocal-specific, taking the work out of dialing in an entire chain of vocal processors. The VX-64 features a new Cakewalk technology that employs phase-coherent, multi-band saturation to avoid unwanted distortion; unique filtering to avoid harsh artifacts at extreme high and low frequencies; and an auto-leveling circuit that prevents the tube saturation from sounding too harsh when high gain transients are processed by it. VX-64 also employs a new de-essing algorithm designed with Cakewalk's LP64 linear phase effect filtering technology to remove sibilance without creating any frequency smearing.

Processing stages include:

* Input — simulates a tube pre amp
* De-esser — removes sibilance without smearing
* Compander — vocal compressor with an expander to reduce unwanted background noise
* Tube EQ — for adding character ranging from subtle warmth to intense heat to the vocal
* Doubler — advanced doubling effect providing the quality of actual re-tracking
* Delay — preset delays useful for vocal tracks with tempo sync
* Output — provide saturation control with a built in soft-clipping filter
* Order of processor stages is user definable with click & drag reordering

Channel Tools — provides easy and powerful control over individual placement of the left and right channels anywhere in the stereo field. Ideal for adjusting L/R channel placement, gain, pan/width, and phase; also provides a widening or narrowing effect to stereo recordings through adjustments to mid-side gain.

Boost 11 Peak Limiter — gives your tracks radio-ready punch through transparent peak limiting and volume maximization without additional coloring of the source material. Boost 11 employs a "look-ahead" limiter and PDR (Program Dependent Release) to provide professional results with a simple interface.

Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3 LE — built on the latest award-winning guitar amp modeler from Native Instruments; 3 amps and cabinets, 11 effects, tuner, metronome, and over 50 presets.

Dimension LE — a streamlined version of the acclaimed Dimension Pro instrument from Cakewalk. Dimension LE features over 400 sound programs, ranging from bass, organ, and electric piano samples to cutting-edge synth sounds, rhythmic grooves, and a special edition of Garritan Pocket Orchestra.

Rapture LE — is a special version of the award winning Rapture wavetable synthesizer. It includes over 200 programs and hundreds of oscillator shapes. Rapture LE is perfect for performing the modern synthesized sounds igniting today's pop, dance, and electronic music.

Cakewalk Studio Instruments — a collection of four virtual instruments that provide a fast and easy way to create backing tracks using a photo-realistic, interactive user interface. Instruments include a Drum Kit, Bass Guitar, Electric Piano, and String Section.

SONAR VS digital recording software (PC only) — a special entry level DAW based on the powerful SONAR 8 audio engine but offering a streamlined user interface.

MolamurV2 Lemur Interface for Molar VSTi

MolamurV2 Lemur Interface for Molar VSTi from barnone on Vimeo.
"This shows a new Lemurized multitouch interface I've been working on for the Molar VSTi Monome plugin created by Steve Duda. This uses a special Lemurized build of Molar that is available from Steve's website. You can find links at monome.org and jazzmutant.com.

If you are interested in using other Monome applications besides Molar on the Lemur, please check out MonemurV2 on the jazzmutant site which is a general emulation of the monome for the Lemur and can be used with any applications created for the monome."
