[caknobs] RhythmProducer FR-15's instructions (with CMU-810 FaderBoard)

YouTube Uploaded by Caknobs on Dec 30, 2011

"ACE TONE(日本ハモンド)が1975年に発売したリズムボックス『RhythmProducer〔FR-15〕』を使って作ったシステムです。音声アウトをサンプリングして使うのではなく、FR-15本体をスタートさせることでシステムを同期させて動かしたいという狙いがあって構築したものです。音声アウト出力を3分割し、分割した音声アウトによってRoland SBX-80などをSyncさせています。
Today's main machine is "ACE TONE RhythmProducer〔FR-15〕". This RhythmBox was born in 1975. This time, I made the system, without sampling FR-15's sound.

Pics of the inside below.

"This is a listing for the ACE TONE FR-15. In addition to the presets similar to the FR-6, this unit allows you to program one of the five sounds—Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Cymbal, Claves, or Conga—using 8-step or 16-step sequences. It has been tested and works perfectly. The voltage has been modified to 117V. The appearance shows some wear and scuffing, but there are no major damages. I have uploaded a demonstration video on YouTube, so please be sure to check it out."

"Ace Tone FR-15 programmable drum machine. Debuting 3 years before the Roland CR78, this is a unique rhythm machine with an interesting programming method.

These instruments come from Olev Muska and were used for recording and touring his unique Estonian Techno Folk music. All were bought brand new by him and can be heard on his 7 inch and albums."

"This FR-15 has a built-in button sequencer.

In addition to the 10 basic rhythms, up to 2 of the 5 sounds (BassDrum, SnareDrum, Cymbal, Claves, and Conga) can be played together using the 8-step button sequencer.

As the name 'RHYTHM PRODUCER' suggests, this is a point of difference from ordinary rhythm boxes.

The sound is different from Roland and Korg, and has a charming analog rhythm sound.

Made in Japan, this is a rare piece of equipment that is hard to find.

The following maintenance has been done.

Replaced a defective electrolytic capacitor in the tempo circuit.

POT cleaning and switch cleaning"

"This is a demo video for a 1967 era Ace Tone (basically Roland before they called themselves Roland) Rhythm Ace FR-1. This video features direct recording (D.I.) as well as a voice-over by myself. The unit itself is electronically quiet, but you will hear my laptop's fan noise in the video that got into my voice-over mic. This was the world's first transistorized drum machine and this one is in very-good condition..."

See the demo here.

"One-of-a-kind drum machine. It"s a rhythm unit ripped from a 70s farfisa spinet organ and built in a custom case (trying to remain faithful to the original look). Classic analog drum sounds like the ones you get out of the many boxes of that area (Roland TR77, Ace Tone FR-1 FR-2 FR-8, Hammond Auto Vari etc etc)

15 rhythms, controls for tempo, volume and balance Mono jack output and running on 12v DC (power supply is not provided. It works with any 12v DC positive center power suppl)."

You can find a video of one posted here.

This one was spotted and sent in via M Me.

"Very rare vintage drum machine made buy the company that went on to become Roland

In perfect condition looks unused in its original box.

Working perfectly great sounding and a little bit more versatile than the preset rhythm units of this era.

This is a Japanese voltage unit but I can supply a step down transformer if required."

Tubbutec Introduces UniPulse Universal MIDI Interface for Vintage Drum Machines

Rhythm Ace FR-3 midi (Tubbutec UniPulse demo)

Published on Apr 5, 2016 tubbutec

"Ace Tone Rhythm Ace FR-3 midi triggered with full velocity control via Tubbutec UniPulse. UniPulse is an universal midi interface for drum machines."

"uniPulse – universal drum machine midi interface

Main features

Highly customizable, compatible to almost any drum machine
16 pulse outputs
Full velocity sensitivity
5 different pulse shapes
Outputs positive and/or negative pulses up to 12V/-12V
Voltage and length can be mapped to velocity, controller or CV-input
4 Digital outputs for gates and clocks
Up to 21 simultaneous clock outputs with different midi dividers
Analog output with various functions
Potentiometer / CV input to control length or voltage of pulses
Internal clock multiplier for DIN sync
Easy to use configuration app with preset database for common drum machines
Very small, fits in most drum machines
Various midi socket configurations
Runs off a single supply voltage between +15 and +25V, generates negative voltage internally

Some features in more detail

PULSE SHAPES
Various pulse shapes can be selected for each output: Rectangular, Triangular, Decay, Gaussian and Open Rect. The latter is similar to the rectangular pulse, with the exception, that instead of returning to zero volts, it goes into a high impedance state. This allows it to make use of the characteristics of an existing pulse shaping network, such as an RC network built into the drum machine.
The pulse shapes have different sonic characteristics, experimenting which suits best is recommended. The Gaussian pulse for example contains less higher harmonics and can be used to simulate drums hit by a felt headed mallet.pulseshapes

CLOCK AND SYNC GATES
The analogue output and the four digital outputs can be configured to act as sync clocks and gates. This allows it to sync the drum machine to the midi clock. Clock dividers and polarity are adjustable in order to achieve compatibility with all drum machines. Clocks speeds between 48PPQN (din-sync 48) and 1PPQN (one pulse per quarter note) are possible.
By using the 16 pulse outputs, the uniPulse can output up to 21 different clocks simultaneously.tempo-small

CONFIGURATION PROGRAM
The uniPulse configuration program, available for windows and OSX, uses midi sysex to configure the uniPulse. We are constantly working on expanding a database of presets for common drum machines.
For each channel, you can select pulse shapes, polarity, length, midi channels, note numbers and mappings. For sync outputs clock dividers can be chosen.

A velocity sensitive test button an be used to instantly listen and refine your configuration, and thus choose what sounds best for your particular drum machine and taste."

Moby's Drum Machines For Sale

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

You can find them on Reverb here.

Don't miss the video here.

Update: some pics and details captured. I made the mistake of trying to capture them all and then realized how many were listed. :) I ended up switching to the more esoteric models. Quite a few have never been featured here on MATRIXSYNTH before. What's a little bit interesting, is only two new labels were needed, one for Domino and one for Side-Kick-Er. All other brands have been featured before. See the labels at the bottom of this post. Side note: Blogger limits the number of characters to 200 for labels, so I wasn't able to capture them all for this post. You can always search for the brand names featured for more. I assume most do this anyway. The labels are more for maintenance and for finding posts that may not feature brand names in descriptions.
