New Hachi Step Sequencer for Novation Launchpad Pro + More

Hachi Step Sequencer Controlling a TT-303

Published on Dec 24, 2016 Mike Perkowitz

"Hachi runs on a Novation Launchpad Pro [+more, see below] and includes multiple sequencers. This video shows the step sequencer controlling a TT-303.

Each of the 8 columns is a step, and the note can be modified by octave (orange), velocity (green), slide (gray), tie (dark blue), repeat (pink), and so on.

For more info, see: https://github.com/perkowitz/issho"

"Hachi

A multi-function midi sequencer that runs on a Novation Launchpad Pro and a headless computer like a Raspberry Pi. Hachi is written in Java, and so can run on a Pi (tested), a Mac (tested), and many other platforms (untested), with or without keyboard and monitor.

Hachi (= 'eight' in Japanese) can run up to 8 'modules' at a time. Available modules include several midi sequencers, a paint/animation toy, and a sequencer-controller that lets you coordinate your sequencers. Hachi is a generalized version of this simpler sequencer that I wrote for the original Launchpad. That basic sequencer runs as one module in Hachi."

Side Note: Mike Perkowitz is the admin of the AH (Analog Heaven) mailing list, which I believe is the longest running synthesizer mailing list.

MidiSizer MidiGAL w/ MidiPAL v1.4 firmware

via this auction

Not sure when the MidiGAL was released, but this appears to be the first time it has been featured here on the site.

Details via the listing:

"MidiSizer MidiGAL, hand built with love by Pete Kvitek and running MidiPAL v1.4 firmware.

It includes 19 different MIDI 'apps', ranging from MIDI debugging or routing utilities to compositional tools like arpeggiators, scale, midi delay, and pattern generators.

Although this MidiGAL is running Mutable Instruments firmware, there is a number of other firmware variants that were developed specifically for MidiGAL.

I think you can flash your own firmware if you know what you're doing.

Product page for MidiGAL is here - midisizer.com/midigal/
MidiPAL firmware info: mutable-instruments.net/midipal

The unit is in a clear acrylic case and ships with the power supply pictured in the listing."

Last pic below is minus the case via the midisizer website which has the following details on the MidiGAL:

"Although MidiGAL can run Mutable Instruments MIDIpal firmware, there is a number of other firmware variants that were developed specifically for MidiGAL:

MidiClk — MIDI clock tester/generator
MidiArp — advanced MIDI arpeggiator
MidiSeq — polyphonic MIDI step sequencer
MidiGAL differences from MIDIpal

While MidiGAL hardware is almost identical to the original MIDIpal, there are some minor differences:

8×2 LCD (MIDIpal uses 8×1)
tactile switch (MIDIpal has no switch)
external EEPROM (MIDIpal has no external EEPROM)
4 x I/O ports (MIDIpal has 8 of them)"

Division 6 Business Card Sequencer

via Division 6.

How cool is that? A business card that is actually functional. I love it when manufactures do this. Analogue Solutions had a circuit board business card as well. If you know of others, feel free to leave a comment.

Details, including how to get your own, via Division 6:

"Boards for this fun little sequencer, which can also be used as a tiny keyboard, were handed out to everybody who attended Knobcon 2016. If you're wondering what to do with your board, or want to get one of your very own, you've come to the right place.

Connections, From Left to Right

Power In: 7-15VDC, tip positive (Don't reverse it or it will get mad). Just find a voltage source on your synth somewhere. If the notes being played by the sequencer seem flat, the power supply you have chosen may be dropping too much under load. If you can't or don't want to use your synth to power the sequencer, you can use a 9V Battery or AC power supply.
Clock In: 0-5V is ideal, but going outside that range won't hurt it. Step will advance on rising edge.

CV Out: 1 volt/octave, C=1V/2V/3V. Connect to the CV in on your oscillator (or filter or whatever)

Gate Out: On=+5V. Plug this into your VCA, EG, etc. Gate timing follows the clock when the sequencer is running, buttons when in Ready mode, and stays on while programming.

Operation

Push Run to start playing a sequence. The true green Run LED will light to tell you that you are in Run mode. Push it again to Pause. The sequencer steps can be programmed while paused.

Push reset to stop the sequence, go to step 1, and enter Ready mode. The blue step LED will blink to let you know that you are in Ready mode. This means that when you press Run again, the sequencer will play step 1 on the next clock pulse instead of skipping it and going to step 2.

Native Instruments Introduces MASCHINE JAM

Published on Sep 8, 2016 Native Instruments

"Berlin, September 8, 2016 – Native Instruments today announced MASCHINE JAM – the modern production and performance system created for fluid, intuitive track sketching and the latest member of the MASCHINE family. MASCHINE JAM offers versatile workflow designed to swiftly capture and develop creative ideas using tactile step sequencing and touch-sensitive performance controls for the latest MASCHINE 2 software. Advancing the same seamless hardware-software integration found throughout the world of MASCHINE, MASCHINE JAM not only enhances music production with existing MASCHINE hardware, but also with DAWs, NKS-ready plug-ins, and the KOMPLETE range of software and hardware. MASCHINE JAM will be available at the NI Online Shop and at retailers worldwide starting September 29, 2016.

“Inspiration has always been the most energizing, yet transient moment in the creative process,” says Mate Galic, CTO of Native Instruments. “MASCHINE JAM narrows the gap between idea and execution and introduces an innovative piece of hardware that draws from the power of software in a deeply integrated way. It will stimulate more creative experimentation, drive quick results and deliver the flow of a truly tactile digital instrument for advanced track building and performance”.

MASCHINE JAM offers a unique set of hardware features that reinforces the creative process. Its workflow centers on an 8x8 multicolor click-pad matrix where producers and performers can experiment with arrangement possibilities using patterns and scenes. In Step Mode, the matrix becomes a powerful multi-track step-sequencer for one, four, or eight sounds simultaneously. In Pad Mode, sounds are entered in real time, while Piano Roll Mode makes step-sequencing melodies in a wide variety of available scales possible. When the Variation Engine is enabled, inspirational beats and melodies are randomly generated based on customizable values and then modified on the matrix. A built-in humanizer adds natural rhythmic fluctuations to programmed sequences.

MASCHINE JAM’s eight dual-touch Smart Strips feature an impressive set of functions unlocked with the free MASCHINE 2.5 software update. All-new Perform FX map one of several effects to JAM’s touch strips. Each strip responds to simultaneous finger gestures to alter the motion, space, and dynamics of sounds in real time. The Smart Strips each feature multi-color LED meters to monitor the level of the assigned function, and can be used to alter macros, key instrument parameters, and even play melodies and chords with the unique Notes function. A powerful Lock function stores parameter snapshots that can revert back to their original settings or morph between multiple lock states.

MASCHINE JAM includes a substantial repertoire of sound from MASCHINE 2 software and the KOMPLETE 11 SELECT* instruments and effects bundle - including NI's legendary synths MASSIVE and MONARK - so producers can start creating right out of the box. Along with the powerful MASCHINE Drum Synth modules, version 2.5 of the acclaimed MASCHINE software features a revised 9 GB library updated with all-new sounds and macro controls.

MASCHINE JAM not only boasts united workflow across included sounds and instruments, but also creates a workflow complementary to existing MASCHINE hardware. In addition to seamless browsing through the advanced tag-based MASCHINE and KOMPLETE sound libraries, full support for NKS-ready plug-ins makes native in-app browsing for third party software possible. MASCHINE JAM integrates seamlessly within any DAWs as a plug-in, and provides extensive DAW control as a dedicated controller in MIDI mode. A template for Ableton Live is included. It can also be custom-mapped to control any other MIDI capable software.

To mark the release of MASCHINE JAM, Native Instruments is offering MASCHINE 2 software owners the choice of two MASCHINE Expansions from an eligible 20** – free with registration of MASCHINE JAM. The introductory offer runs until December 31, 2016.

MASCHINE JAM will be available for $399 / 399 € / ¥ 49,800 / £319 / AU$ 549 at the NI Online Shop and at local retailers on September 29, 2016.
Preorder is also available.

The free MASCHINE Expansions introductory offer is only available at the NI Online Shop until December 31, 2016 for existing MASCHINE 2 software owners after registration of MASCHINE JAM hardware.

New Endangered Audio Research Spectravibe Analog Multi-Effects Unit

Spectravibe Korg Minilogue Demo

Published on Jul 25, 2016 Endangered Audio Research Video

"The Spectravibe is an analog multi-effects unit made by hand in America by Endangered Audio Research using only the finest through-hole components.

Here is a demo of the prototype Spectravibe modulating a Korg Minilogue.

Only a few discounted pre-orders remain at the Century Sound Labs Reverb store - find them at www.reverb.com/shop/centurysoundlabs

If you miss out on the discounted pre-order, you'll have to pay full retail price and may face some delay in getting your unit as demand is already very high."

Details via Endangered Audio Research

"The Endangered Audio Research Spectravibe is an all-analog multi-effect pedal that is about to become your pedalboard's new secret weapon. Based off the retired Gristleizer stompbox, the Spectravibe is a new evolution in modulation and distortion that is destined to become the pulsating heart of your rig.

In Trem mode, the Spectravibe acts like a tremolo and adjustable overdrive. Two wave shapes are provided: triangle and saw cover the most useful modulation needs. The frequency of the LFO ranges from 4 seconds to well into the audio band - much wider than any typical tremolo. Use the Depth knob to go from a slight warble to a total stutter, and use the Bias control to adjust the FET tube-style distortion. The Gain knob takes your tone from clean and subtle to in-your-face overdrive. In Trem mode, the Blend knob acts like an adjustable high-end air frequency booster. The two expression pedal controls for Speed and Depth allow you to keep

In Vibe mode, the Spectravibe is like vibrato or a Leslie simulator. The unique lush filter has an extended range that brings out the best of your bass, guitar, and keys. Use it on a send while mixing as a "secret weapon" EQ. Go from sweet and shimmery to a bubbly underwater sci-fi filter with the Depth knob, which controls the amount of frequency modulation. The Bias changes the filters center frequency and the Gain allows you to overdrive the filter. The Blend control will add back unfiltered signal that is essential for nailing a watery rotary speaker effect.

In both modes, you can bypass the internal LFO an inject your own modulation source. Use LFOs or envelopes from synthesizers for even more wild and unique effects.

The Spectravibe can be used purely as a versatile distortion box. Turning the Depth all the way down cuts off the modulation completely. The Bias, Gain, and Filter Mix can all be adjusted sans-tremolo for a wide palette of dirty tones. Add that to the high-level amp-driving output provided by the internal 18-volt circuitry, you can use the Level knob to rope in your guitar's preamp into your sound even more.

To use the Spectravibe as a Ring Modulator, set it to Trem mode and turn the frequency of the oscillator into the audio range. The Depth, Bias, Gain, and Blend knobs all interact in a way that make other Ring Mods seem stiff and unmusical. Plug in an expression pedal and you can control the pitch of the oscillator mid-solo. You can even use the Mod input to sync the Ring Mod with a synthesizer.

Great guitarists know about the parked wah tone trick - that is, using a wah-wah pedal as a band-selectable frequency controller. To do this with the Spectravibe, turn the Depth knob all the way down and sweep the Bias until you dial in the perfect tone. Turn the Blend knob all the way to the left to highlight the frequency band you want to boost. Once you've found it, start turning the Blend knob up to mix back in your original signal. Finally, use the Gain control to adjust the grittiness of the filter and the Level control for overall boost to get the perfect amount of bark. It's a tone tweaker's dream!

The Spectravibe runs off a normal 9-volt DC pedal adapter, but the circuitry inside boosts the voltage to +/- 9 DC for a total 18 volts. This is big: no special, expensive, and bulky adapters to keep track of, tons of headroom, and lots of gain. In fact, the Spectravibe has so much gain that you can use it as an interface between your guitar and a modular synthesizer. The switching supply Endangered Audio Research custom-designed for this pedal produces no audible whine that you'd find in cheap adapters. This means you can use any standard tip negative 9 volt supply!

With the versatility and analog tone this pedal provides, the Spectravibe will become the single most important pedal on your board - so important that you'll probably want two!"

Introducing the Onde Magnétique OM-1 Cassette Synthesizer

Published on Jul 5, 2016 Scott Campbell

http://www.ondemagnetique.com

"The OM-1 Cassette Synthesizer is an analog musical instrument built around the concept that when a continuous tone/note is recorded to tape, its pitch will change as the tape's playback speed is increased or decreased. Individual notes are playable via the 8 buttons (keys), each with a tuning knob directly above it. The volume of the notes can be articulated by using the pressure sensitive volume control - the harder its pressed, the louder the note. A three position switch controls attack/release response of the audio output - Short, Medium, and Long. CV/Gate inputs allow control over the cassette's pitch and volume from a linear (non-quantized) voltage sequencer."

Defective Records Software Releases "DSX Hack" - Oberheim DSX Sequencer Editor for Mack & Windows

via Defective Records

"After an altogether too long development cycle, I'm happy to report that 'DSX Hack' is now available!

Available for both Mac and Windows, DSX Hack lets you program your Oberheim DSX sequencer without the need for a connected Oberheim synth, a previous limitation. Instead, you now program it using MIDI files and the software, which creates audio "squelch" that programs the DSX via its cassette input.

What's awesome about the DSX is that it has EIGHT pairs of CV/Gate outputs on the back, which the sequencer info can be routed to…. That's a whole lot of CV control in one box!

I'm indebted to the group of beta testers who helped me (many of whom are on this list), as well as to Marcus Ryle (CEO of Line 6 and the DSX's original designer), Paul White (Electrongate and former Oberheim), and Tom Oberheim himself (he pointed me to Marcus).

More info, video, demo version, etc… available on the site:

New Yamaha EMX Powered Mixers

Not a synth, but you can definitely plug your synths into them. Thought some of you might be interested and Yamaha is a valued supporter of MATRIXSYNTH.

These new models:

- Incorporate powerful new professional features as well as an updated look and interface

- Provide better performance and ease of use than ever before

- Appeal to a wide range of users and a wide range of applications — bands and mobile DJ performances in small- to mid-sized events, worship, nightclub, retail business installations, etc."

The official press release:

"Yamaha EMX Series Compact Powered Mixers Deliver Powerful Performance, Greater Portability and Updated Look

BUENA PARK, Calif. (June 23, 2016) – Yamaha today unveiled the latest models in the company’s popular EMX series powered mixer lineup, which incorporate powerful new professional features as well as an updated look and interface.
Since its debut 30 years ago, the EMX Series has earned its stellar reputation by providing users having little or no live sound reinforcement experience with a compact, reliable, versatile and easy-to-use mixer requiring minimum setup and connections. Yamaha is the best-selling line of powered mixers in the U.S.

Like their predecessors, each of the new models – the EMX2, EMX5 and EMX7 – seamlessly integrates a mixer, power amplifiers and digital effects into a single chassis, requiring only speakers and microphones to realize a fully functioning sound system.

The EMX2, EMX5 and EMX7 all feature Class-D power amps delivering 500, 630 and 710 Watts respectively of power, offering lightweight, yet powerful sound reinforcement options for bands and mobile DJ performances in small- to mid-sized events, as well as for worship, nightclub or retail business applications.

All models include legendary Yamaha SPX effects for hall, plate, room and echo reverbs. The EMX2 and the EMX5 include an updated 1-Knob Master EQ™ sound contour control to easily adjust the overall sound frequency balance. The EMX7 features a flex-type graphic equalizer (Flex9GEQ) that allows the user to select up to nine bands out of a total of 31 for fine tuning±15 dB.

A new Feedback Suppressor incorporating proprietary Yamaha digital technology instantly eliminates annoying feedback with the single push of a button.

Inspired by the Yamaha STAGEPAS 600i Portable PA System, the entry level 10-input EMX2 features 500 Watts (2 x 250 Watts) of amplification, four high quality microphone pre-amps and three stereo line inputs. This model is surprisingly compact (14.8” x 5.8” x 8.7”), making it easy to fit along with speakers in the trunk of a small car.
Moving up the line, the EMX5 and EMX7 each offer 12 input channels and can output to 630 Watts and 710 Watts respectively. Users can connect up to eight microphones or line-level devices, such as keyboards and CD players and portable MP3 players.

The EMX5 and EMX7 are housed in an impact-resistant, powder-coated metal chassis for a robust, yet extremely portable design that allows for convenient operation on either a tabletop or in a rack (rack mount brackets available separately). Large handles on the front and back of the body serve double duty, making the mixers easy to lift while protecting knobs and terminals on the surface of the chassis from impact or pressure.

While these mixers are capable of higher than expected sound pressure levels (SPL), they actually consume less power than previous models with more compact form factors.

'The Yamaha EMX Series has a proven track record of excellence, offering a winning combination of great sound, affordability and portability,” said Nithin Cherian, marketing manager, Pro Audio division, Yamaha Corporation of America. “Each of these new models provide better performance and ease of use than ever before, and will appeal to a wide range of users in a wide range of applications.'

All three models feature Phantom Power to allow the user to plug in condenser microphones for higher audio quality and better frequency range. For even greater flexibility, input 4 on the mixers features a high-impedance input for acoustic guitar or bass without the need for external processing.

And because each of the EMX Series models incorporates the amplifiers, users can easily connect passive speakers or add a Yamaha DXS Series Powered sub-woofer via a single connection, for configuring a PA system that requires a more prominent bass performance.

Pricing and Availability
The EMX2, EMX5 and EMX7 will ship in August; price to be determined.

Arcano MIDI Controller Board Kickstarter Campaign

This one in via Skot Wiedmann of the Hyve Touch synthesizer and Motus Mavis.

You'll find the Kickstarter campaign here.

"The Arcano MIDI Controller Board is an AVR-microcontroller-based device that allows makers and musicians to easily create their own custom MIDI controllers by simply connecting pushbutton switches, such as those used in arcade games. The device connects to a synthesizer via a MIDI cable or a computer via a USB MIDI interface cable. The small form factor and mounting holes make it easy to embed the Arcano MIDI Controller Board in just about any custom MIDI controller project.

The Arcano MIDI Controller Board features 13 note inputs, two octave-control inputs, and a reset input. Input button states are polled 4000 times per second for ultra-low-latency MIDI output. MIDI data is output via a standard MIDI DIN connector, and power is supplied through a mini USB connector.

No programming is required. Each Arcano MIDI Controller Board includes a programmed microcontroller. The device's software has been refined through more than 20 iterations. The latest version features a conventional note-on/note-off mode and three latch modes, which are great for triggering drum samples and loops.
