Introducing Luna: A Lunetta style groovebox & eurorack synth module

video upload by mylarmelodies

Check with dealers on the right on pricing and availability.

"This is your official introduction to the Neutral Labs Luna - a new lunetta-style “groovebox” desktop & eurorack compatible synth. It’s patch programmable, letting you both create tones and rhythms from 5 oscillators (2 with step sequencers inside), logic and pattern generators, all at the same time. Three 'LPG's take the raw tones and let you gate and filter them. 13 effects in 2 blocks effect and shape sounds further.

Enormous thanks to Martin at Neutral Labs for commissioning me to make a vid of this. The world needs more shift registers. Note: I used my own red Tiptop Audio Stackcables in the video, but the desktop module comes with 12 braided patch cables."

What's a Lunetta synthesizer and why should you care? // LUNA from Neutral Labs

video upload by DivKid

"Join us for an exploration of what Lunetta Synthesizers are, what the new Luna from Neutral Labs is and why you should care.

The short answer is that it’s an interesting series of raw digital building blocks from a sonic sculptor (Stanley Lunetta) with lots of modern quality of life features that allow you to approach timbre as rhythm, rhythm as timbre then round that out with low pass gates and FX.

"Logic, Unbound. Meet Luna. The first serious Lunetta synthesizer.

Look beyond clean waveforms and predictable polyphony. Luna will take you back to a time when digital didn’t mean perfect. It meant raw. Inspired by the subterranean DIY culture of the 70s and 80s, Luna is a love letter to the Lunetta machines of old: Living, breathing organisms built from CMOS logic chips. But where those machines were fragile experiments, Luna is a weaponized instrument of sonic confusion.

The Nervous System Exposed. True to the Neutral Labs philosophy, we don’t believe in hiding the magic behind an opaque face plate. Luna features exposed CMOS inputs and outputs right on the front panel. You're not just patching cables, you are rewiring the brain of the synthesizer itself. Combine signals, bend logic, and physically intervene in the computation to create sounds that shouldn't exist.

Rhythm is Timbre. Timbre is Rhythm. In the world of Luna, there is no difference between a sequencer and an oscillator. The same digital pulse that drives a bass line can be accelerated into a screeching lead or folded into a metallic drone.

5 oscillators provide the raw material. A chaotic array of logic blocks (XOR, NOT, AND, shift registers, counters, multiplexer) will chew up those signals and spit out complex, evolving mathematical noise.

Taming the Digital Mess. Raw logic can be harsh. To turn this binary chaos into music, Luna feeds its digital soul through 3 organic low-pass gates. These analog circuits impart a natural decay and percussive punch to the madness, transforming mathematical errors into bongos, plucks, and thumping basslines.

Drench it in Atmosphere. Once you’ve constructed your signal, destroy it again. Luna comes equipped with a suite of effects — distortion, delay, reverb, chorus, bitcrusher, phaser and more — to smear your logic into a wash of ambient bliss or gritty industrial texture.

5 oscillators
logic gates (2 XOR, 2 NOT, 2 AND)
5 logic blocks (5-step ring counter,4-bit binary counter, 2 shift registers, 4-channel multiplexer)
3 touchpads that generate logic signals
3 channels for audio manipulation (low-pass gates with adjustable decay and switchable trigger mode, gain, tilt EQ)
13 audio effects that can be freely assigned to 2 effect slots running in series (drive, delay, reverb, 6 filter types, bitcrusher, phaser, chorus, comb filter)
CV control for effects and 2 oscillators
MIDI control over 2 oscillators, all 3 low-pass gates, and 3 logic outputs (MIDI TRS A socket)
2 sequencers with up to 64 steps, syncable to clock or MIDI
audio output is headphone compatible
available as a desktop synth or 42 HP Eurorack module (desktop version comes with a 12-pack of black/gold braided patch cables)
See more videos and photos on Instagram.

Note: For sustainability reasons, the desktop version does not come with a USB power supply, just a USB-A to USB-C cable. You will need a 5V supply, such as a phone charger, power bank or laptop.

Note: The desktop version has a Eurorack power header and can be placed into a Eurorack. The desktop case however has 5V USB power and no Eurorack rails, you cannot use it as a 42 HP rack without modifications."

"Scrooge is a sequenced malfunction generator, available as a 42 HP Eurorack module or semi-modular desktop synth. While you can convince it to deliver boomy kick drum sounds, clicky hi-hats or metallic snares, it would much rather be making glitchy artifacts, hollow crackles and horribly distorted growls. It contains a sophisticated and performance-oriented step sequencer with parameter locking and the possibility to control all steps across multiple tracks at once. Its 5 distinct and fully analog voices are made up of special circuits that work without dedicated power supplies, scrounging power from the sequencer control signals instead, which gives them an organic and unstable quality. As a bonus, it means you won’t have to power the unit itself if you sequence it from external gear.

5 distinct analog voices
device can work passively without a power supply if sequenced from external gear
each voice can be routed to either of 2 main outputs (headphone compatible)
individual voice outputs
individual voice CV inputs that respond well to audio signals
2 modulation tracks, individually routable to voices
2 modulation CV inputs
onboard step sequencer
parameter locking per step
"control all" mode (change parameters for several steps and tracks at once), great for interactive playing
arbitrary step length per track (up to 64 steps)
generative algorithm builds random variations on patterns (available while performing), or creates random patterns from scratch
pattern chaining (up to 32 patterns)
stores up to 128 patterns in 16 banks
microtiming
CV slew limiter per track
can sequence external gear
sync output
sync and reset inputs
MIDI input (TRS type A)"

Ambient sounds of outer space | Neutral Labs Pip & Nijel, Blue Marvin, Deckard's Voice | (20 min)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!
I made a 20-minute soundscape video that sounds like the 70s and 80s depiction of music from outer space. Everything is coming out of the Blue Marvin's stereo output, as I don't have any VCAs. Here is the list of modules I used and how they play into the function of the piece:
- Neutral Labs Pip (Clock and CV output)
- Instruō Harmonàig (Quantizer (random melody generator in A Phrygian))
- Instruō/Divkid øchd (overall modulation to a bunch of parameters around the patch)
- Black Corporation Deckard's Voice (Main oscillator on the eurorack side)
- Serge by Random*Source Variable Q VCF (Filter to which Deckard'd Voice is connected (VC F and VC Q parameters modulated by øchd))
- Neutral Labs Nijel (Drive effect for Oscillator 3 in Blue Marvin 2600's Sine Wave, the amount is modulated by øchd's slowest LFO)
- Behringer Blue Marvin 2600 ( 1st and third oscillators, various modulations and internal spring reverb)

In Ableton, I have Valhalla Shimmer on, Other Desert Cities by Audio Damage, and some light EQ and compression.

Neutral Labs Elmyra 2 - Drone Synthesizer // Demo, Tutorial and Opinions

video upload by Dexba

"SUBTITLES AVAILABLE (in many languages!) I've had the lucky chance to be able to check out the Elmyra 2, by Neutral Labs. It has a very interesting approach to performance and sound building: it looks easy, but it can get way deeper than you think. After playing with it for a long while, I decided to offer you a tour of its functions, plus my (unrequested) opinions, all in this desktop configuration. Since the video was getting pretty long already, even by just covering the basic functions, I decided to keep the eurorack approach for a later time, also because that would have prompted me to give even more (unrequested) opinions, and the possible combinations of modules would have been endless (except for the mandatory huge reverb!). In this video, I used the very good reverb on the Dirtywave M8 Tracker, which was very handy because of its 3.5mm jack and the capability of isolating just the active channel on the cable. I hope you'll find the video useful, in its "overview" part, and I hope the "opinion" part could spark some constructive debate."

DIY Build #3: Neutral Labs MEG Eurorack Waveshaper

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

Thanks for watching!
The Neutral Labs MEG kit finally arrived from Thonk from the UK and I was able to find some time and build it. It took me an hour and 47 minutes, and I captured the whole build but managed to condense the video down to 35 minutes. It has some skips and time-lapses, and some hair... I know, I am still getting used to shooting in this format, so I was getting close to the module a few times. Sorry about this. I will pay more attention in the future.

Introducing Elmyra - a DIY drone synthesizer by Neutral Labs

Published on Mar 21, 2020 nyppy

"This is just a quick demo of my Elmyra prototype. You can easily build this synth yourself. I will share the schematics, PCB and code in a few days. A video detailing all the features is also coming up. Just watch this space or drop me a message.

This is obviously inspired by the Soma Lyra-8, which I love, but it's not a clone at all.

Reverb provided by Eventide Space. Next video will have the dry sound as well. The Elmyra delay can get pretty reverb-y on its own.

Ambient doom with the Neutral Labs Elmyra 2 and Walrus Sloër

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

Neutral Labs sent over the Elmyra 2 for free. I was interested to try it because it has some of the spirit and playfulness of the Lyra 8, but much more control over pitch. It's also geared toward overdriven, saturated sounds, which is where my head is at these days. All of that was cool and amazing about the Elmyra, but I particularly fell in love with the sequencer, having four independent sequencer lines with differing lengths for the four voices.

I'll probably never use this thing's wavetables, but the basic oscillator sounds are nice. The filter options are fantastic. I really love the circuit-bending-style chips that change the drive option. And having oscillators that tune to semi-tones? Incredible. I wish all eurorack did that.

Anyway, along with the Walrus Sloër (doing some heavy lifting on pitched reverb), this was an unexpected song that came together quickly thanks to the extensive sequencer. I look forward to pairing this synth with some other simple devices and making some more ambient doom.

Walrus Sloër - pitched reverb

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Neutral Labs Nijel Distortion

video upload by John Schussler

"I really liked Neutral Labs' first module: Scrat. It's a filter plus distortion in 8hp. But y'know, maybe you have lots of filters and only want the distortion bit, so to the rescue comes Nijel: just 4hp, but using the same sound cards as Scrat (the cards are called "Nuts"), and with plenty of attitude.

So as soon as I heard of Nijel's existence I jumped at the chance to build one (it's a super easy build...all the SMD components are already on the PCB, you just do pots and jacks for the most part). Many thanks to Martin at Neutral Labs for getting me in early.

Nermal Eurorack modulated destructive distortion module by Neutral Labs

video by nyppy

Neutral Labs Nermal Eurorack modulated destructive distortion Eurorack module demo

video by nyppy

Prototpy demo posted here

via Neutral Labs

Nermal is a destructive distortion Eurorack module that has some unique sonic qualities. There are 3 levels of distortion ranging from subtle saturation to utter destruction. An integrated modulator can switch or even blend between these modes, with the modulation frequency going well into the audio range, in which case, interesting harmonics and artefacts can be created on top of the incoming audio. Nermal rewards experimentation and unexpected sweetspots can often be discovered along the way. In addition to the onboard modulator, there are external modulation options via control voltages (CV) for the most commonly used parameters. LFOs and envelopes work great, but audio signals are accepted as well and make for the most interesting patches.

Nermal is available from May 2021 as a full DIY kit from retailers. It's fairly easy to complete, with a moderate component count and no SMD or other tricky parts.
