IO-Lights – Light sensitive MIDI controller

instruments of things

"IO-Lights is a MIDI controller that controls MIDI CC or MIDI Note signals via environmental light. A high-resolution light sensor in the center of the product makes it possible. In addition, MIDI notes can also be sent to IO-Lights, which are then represented as light by the 12 LEDs on the device."

via Instruments of Things

"The instrument of lights – IO-Lights is a MIDI controller that controls MIDI CC or MIDI Note signals via environmental light. A high-resolution light sensor in the center of the product makes it possible. In addition, MIDI notes can also be sent to IO-Lights, which are then represented as light by the 12 LEDs on the device.

How to use IO-Lights?

IO-Lights is used as a common MIDI controller. Just connect it via USB to the music software of your choice and start controlling sounds with light. You want to connect IO-Lights to your hardware synthesizer? Then simply use an additional USB MIDI host (e.g. this). The internal MIDI configuration can be changed via MIDI SysEx in a web app, which we will present to you soon!

Light to MIDI:

In the center of IO-Lights is a high-resolution light sensor that measures brightness. Use your surrounding light or a light source of your choice and point it at IO-Lights to control your sound.

MIDI Modes:

MIDI Notes: Use IO-Lights to play notes via light. MIDI Control Change: Use IO-Lights to control parameters via light.

MIDI to Light:

IO-Lights can not only control MIDI signals, but also visualize MIDI notes by the 12 LEDs on the product UI. Therefore simply send MIDI notes to IO-Lights. This is where the magic happens: the resulting light also influences the MIDI signals that IO-Lights emit. This creates a generative sound-light interaction.

Random Light:

Let IO-Lights generate light randomly. This looks nice. And? – And also influences your sound parameters by the resulting change of luminosity."

2 x Circuit Bent Stylophones synced with a modular synthesizer system

Tasos Stamou

"Two stylophones linked to a modular synth system, receiving CV signals for pitch, filter."

via https://www.tasosstamou.com
This instrument is the result of years of research while intensively hacking the Stylophone into extreme levels of manipulation, towards the production of an analogue synthesizer.

The evolution of this research has concluded into this tiny beast which can be used in many different ways. Besides a very powerful noisy and melodic standalone synth keyboard and drone generator, the new generation is fully compatible to the modular synthesizers’ standards of controls.

The Stamouphone in capable of interacting with a eurorack modular synthesizer system as an extra synth voice, via accurate CV, VCF and gate voltage inputs.

Furthermore, It is equipped with its own very special 2-way filter.

Here is a list of all the hacks:
1. Extreme pitch control (really low range towards rhythmic patterns)
2. 2 x sustain switches, works as a synth voice
3. CV input
4. CV gain knob
5. Gate input
6. 2 way “Stamou” filter, with frequency and resolution knobs
7. 3 x contact point pins, sensible to the filter
8. VCF input
9. Amplified Output (modular synth volume level)

Stealaes Synamodec - Phase shifter with delay processor eurorack demo

Dziam Bass

This is the first Stealaes Synamodec post. New maker, new module.

"Hello all
today I have a demo of the Stealaes module from Synamodec, this is a phase shifter module with a built-in delay processor.
The module has quite a vintage character and that's why I showed it for production, like the 4/8/12 stage which saturates the signal with a nice phazer effect. For this fun with deph and rate so that you can hear the effect.
then delay for modulation, sometimes for reflections typically delay but mostly for delay modulation for the main modulation of the signal.
It's quite a simple demo in the case below, also only on the wave with VCO.
in this demo I used the VCO GR11 tag from Rebach and the AJH synth Gemini 2412 filter for full anal voice where Stealaes complements it with its vintage character.
for me it's a great module but now, when you order this module, you will get the MIx Divider module for free, so it's worth checking the Synamodec website.
It is worth noting that the module is handcrafted in a retro 70's style like the first modular modules and not on a printed pcb."

Introducing the Hummingbird Triple Oscillator Bank

Patchwerks Seattle

Note this is the first Northwest Synthesizers post. You can find the Hummingbird here.

"In this video resident expert Nick Bigelow presents us with the new triple oscillator bank module called the Hummingbird by Northwest Synthesizers.

The Hummingbird is a three oscillator, 20HP Eurorack module that has a recognizable front panel layout with some familiar control features.

Hummingbird allows the creation of a Warm "FAT" sound that normally is not associated with a digital oscillator module.

There are three oscillator CV inputs for 1v/octave sources. All three oscillators can be controlled from a single CV input, or each one can be controlled separately. There is also a modulation CV input with a variable gain control. The modulation input always controls all three oscillators and can (via a toggle switch) either control the pitch of all 3 oscillators or can vary the waveform selection of all 3 oscillators.

Each oscillator has an octave adjust control which gives a range from two octaves below to two octaves above the control voltage input. Oscillators two and three also have a variable pitch adjustment with a range from 5 semitones down to 7 semitones up from the control voltage input, continuously variable with a clean "unison" center adjustment range to allow a quick return to "no pitch offset".

All three oscillators have a waveform adjustment control that allows selecting from triangle, to ramp (sawtooth), to square, to narrow pulse. The transition between waveforms is continuous to allow an almost infinite pallet of output waveforms.

Each oscillator has a separate output jack to allow for multiple routing destinations. Oscillator 1 has an additional "Sub" output which is a square wave one octave below Osc1's basic pitch. Also provided is a single "summed" oscillator output jack. This summed output always mixes equal amounts of Osc 1, 2 and 3 along with an adjustable amount of the Osc 1 Sub output.

Finegear's The Dust Collector

Finegear

New maker and new synth w/ built-in reverb & light sensors (see the side panel below).

"The Dust Collector is the first of the Arkive_Effects_ series, aiming to honor and expand upon the history of experimentation in music, shaking some of the dust that has settled on the 1970’s.

It contains 2 VC LFOs, 2 tape saturations, a spring reverb, a delay and a phaser. However, this is not your average multi-effect box, as each module has been analysed and tweaked to support your creative process.

And experiment you can: insert an effect in the delay’s feedback loop, add modulation to the phaser (as well as to pretty much every effect), poke the three springy insides hiding behind the removable cover… You can even go further inside with several moddable features directly on the PCB.

With the Dust Collector, you’ll uncover unique sounds and new uses for effects you thought you knew: gritty, springy, phased magic dust that sticks to the tape and transforms your sound into a living, kicking and breathing organism – not necessarily pretty, but alive & authentic."

Removable Spring tank cover
Remove it to scratch, hit, rub, place various objects on the springs to feed the storm (and your music)!

Introducing Modbap Modular Per4mer

Modbap Modular

Additional videos:

And the Press Release:

Modbap Modular enters Eurorack market with powerful Per4mer quad performance effects module inauguration

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: Eurorack modular synthesizers and instruments developer Modbap Modular by BeatPPL is proud to introduce Per4mer — perfectly portraying its inaugural offering as a 14HP quad performance effects Eurorack module inspired by beat-maker/DJ performance styles, and available to preorder — as of October 10…

The basic principle behind Per4mer is immediately apparent in its easy-to-follow front panel, packing a creative knockout punch in a compact (14HP) stereo effects-enabling Eurorack module form factor — feed in an audio input to then trigger on-the-fly effects, bringing DJ- style live improvisation to a modular environment. Effects can be triggered simultaneously or individually, where an inspiring effect palette combines to generate uniquely unconventional beats and melodies.

Per4mer puts a Doppler-style DELAY, lush REVERB, GLITCH (beat repeat), and TAPE STOP effects easily at anyone’s fingertips for triggering via four dedicated translucent mini-arcade buttons — buttons that can be manually operated or triggered from the four external gate inputs. Each effect has a set of four effects parameters that can be controlled using the four (FX 1, FX 2, FX 3, and FX 4) rotary knobs or by the four CV (control voltage) inputs. COMP (compression) with SIDE CHAIN input and COLOR processing effects are also available, along with CLOCK input and TAP tempo options. Obviously, external side chain and clock can be connected to interface with other modular and electronic music gear.

“Per4mer acts like a bridge between hip-hop and Eurorack.” So says Modbap Modular Designer and Founder Corry Banks. As a writer, emcee, producer, hip-hop artist (Phashara), and IT pro, he should surely know! “It packs in concepts familiar to lo-fi and beat-making circles, but it brings something fresh to Eurorack,” continues Corry Banks, before adding: “I think Per4mer will be a great entry point to modular synthesis for the modular-curious beat-maker — throw it into a small pod and use it like a standalone performance effects unit or rack it up with other modules to liven things up a bit.”

But best of all, Per4mer’s four performance effects — influencing its notable nomenclature, clearly — can be momentarily engaged or latched individually or simultaneously. Each effect has four tweak-able parameters associated with the four rotary knobs, duly designed for facilitating live improvisation with endless one-off, on-the-fly sounds and rhythmic dynamics. All audio inputs (INPUT L and INPUT R) are provided as mono connections, paired for stereo. Subsequently, Per4mer not only delivers a series of excellent effects and sound design possibilities, but it also allows the creative, classic, tried-and-tested techniques used by beat-makers and DJs to be applied to the wonderful world of Eurorack modular, especially enhanced by manual performance.

Digging deeper, the compressor allows for control over four compression (Threshold, Ratio, Attack, and Release) parameters via the four rotary knobs. Catering perfectly to those users craving the classic ducking sound of side chaining, the compressor also features selectable side chain detection that allows side chain activation via ‘sidechain input’, ‘audio input’, ‘clock input’, or ‘tap tempo’.

The COLOR processor features four color presets bringing texture and character to the signal path, pre effects — namely, Classic (12-bit), LoFi (8-bit), Saturation, and Wax (vinyl simulation). Such presets can be used in combination with the performance effects and compressor for a more characterful result. Reasons Corry Banks, eventually ending on a high note: “The COLOR processor is the special sauce built into Per4mer. It adds so much mojo and attitude. I lose time just enjoying processing audio through it and creating soundscapes to sample. Per4mer is a dope sound design tool as much as it is a dope performance effects module!”

Per4mer is now available to preorder at a retail price of $399.00 USD directly from Modbap Modular’s online Shop (https://modbap.com/shop/) and expected to start shipping in November 2020.

Noise Lab - Eurorack Modules from Stockholm

SchneidersLaden

"Noise Lab is a newly founded synthesizer company based in Stockholm, Sweden. They are starting with six modules forming an interesting synthesizer voice with lots of tricks up its sleeve. Besides the standard modules VCO, VCF, VCA Noise Lab also offers a
spectral mixer a very versatile Wave Shaper and a super-fast envelope. Here is a short overview about the new Noise Lab products.

Prime Mover is an advanced and versatile Voltage Controlled Oscillator based on the renowned 3340 chip. Four primary sound outputs generates Saw, Triangle, Pulse and Sine while individual wave shapers, one for each waveform, expands the sonic possibilities even further.

The Wrinkler consists of a primary wavefolder circuit and a secondary “creaser”, both controllable via knobs and CV. Generally wave folders only work with low harmonic content such as Sine or Triangle waves but this one comes with circuitry which can fold and wrinkle ANY waveform you feed into it, including square waves!

The Beautifier is a flexible OTA based filter, featuring a lowpass/bandpass switch and a selectable slope of 24db and 12dB.

Augmentor features two independent amplifiers with linear response, can also be employed as a signal splitter and works great to create ring-modulator sounds as well with CV control over both audio and CV signals.

Contourist is a general purpose Envelope Generator with three outputs (one inverted ) and three time ranges. From short and snappy (50 msec) to several minutes long contour curves.

The Fourcaster is a unique 4-channel analog crossfader a.k.a. interpolating scanner. Once you start working with it, you'll soon discover how you can create very complex sounds simply by fading between sources.

In this video we'll have a look at the whole product line by Noise Lab and have the chance to hear the modules in a musical context."

Sempervirens | Felt Instruments Blisko, Strymon Magneto

r beny

"Sempervirens - always flourishing or vigorous. (of plants) evergreen

Sound on sound performance with Felt Instruments Blisko and Strymon Magneto. Inspired by the recent forest fires here in California, specifically the sempervirens sequoias, which manage to flourish even in fire.

Felt Instruments makes beautiful virtual instruments in VST format. Here I am using their newest suite of instruments named Blisko, which incorporates Viola, Violin, and Cello recorded and modified in interesting ways. They are MPE compatible and that adds an extra layer of expressiveness. It feels like you are playing an actual physical instrument, as opposed to the normal multi-sample experience.

I am using my iPad as a screen for my computer to show the VST. The Analog Heat is acting as an audio interface for my computer, so I can send the audio from the VSTs to my eurorack. I use Strymon Magneto to make sound on sound loops and then feed that into Clouds in looping delay mode. The bass is from the Moog Subharmonicon.

Apologies for the lower than usual video quality. I didn't realize I wasn't shooting in 4k and this ended up being the best take. Sometimes you just have to let things be."

New Syntaxis Micromodular Starter Set

Krzychu1995

"!!! Available immediatelly at http://syntaxis.com.pl !!!
Today I have something very special to show. In this video you can see and hear synth made from Syntaxis Micromodular set. Instrument is assembled from basic set of micromodules (uVCO, uVCF, uVCA, uLFO and uADSR), but it sounds quite versatile. User is able to assemble synthesizer on it's own, in modular way, but much cheaper and without necessity of use dedicated multipliers - breadboard does it already! Usually building subassemblies of synths on breadboard makes circuit unreliable in longer term. But with Micromodules it works like it was soldered together - you can assemble you own synth, get plywood, drill holes for potentiometers, screw them in place and carry your own synth around for gigs."

"This is a set of components for building a basic but complete analog synthesizer on a breadboard. Although it might not have professional look, you will be surprised with its professional sound.

The set includes:

μPSU·112·A
μVCO·3340·A
μVCF·3320·LP4·A
μVCA·3360·LIN·A

Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP

O.Z. Hall

"This is a demo of the Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP module from Zebra Synth (ZebraSynth.net). The module features an ADSR envelope generator, a VCA on the right half of the module. These functions remain the same with all of the different "Modes". The functionality of the left half of the module changes from mode to mode. The modes are VCO, VCF, Digital Delay, Reverb, Dual Resonator.

This is video covers the Digital Delay mode. The delay time is max 2 seconds. There is also a modulation input to modulate the delay time from an external control voltage."

Quick Intro the History of Analog Synthesizers on Digituria & Their Upcoming Software Synth

Supporting member, Digituria wrote in to let us know of a blog post they put up on the history of analog synthesizers. They are also working on a new soft synth named MATRIX DUDE of all things. No affiliation with me or the site.

The following is some info on the upcoming synth. You can download a beta and try it for yourself on their website here.

OSCILLATORS
Two wavetable analog emulation that reproduce the same harmonics as the classical Model-D square and triangle, while keeping the sharpness of a digital sawtooth. The inverse sawtooth and note-sync allows you to combine both oscillators to recreate a PWM.

FILTER
The synth includes a faithful recreation of the 4 poles 24db "ladder" filter to carve the sound. In addition to the cutoff and resonance there's an extra "spacing" parameter to move the cutoff frequency between the stereo channels.
