AUREX DIVA CTRL for the Novation Launch Control XL

via Kickstarter

"FINALLY MAKING THE CONNECTION

I like hardware synths. I love turning knobs, pushing buttons, and flicking faders when creating sounds. However, I also love all the software synths that are available now, especially because of very convincing analog sounding softsynths such as U-He Diva.

I've always felt the connection between software plugins and hardware controllers was missing something. When controlling hardware synthesizers, you get a great user interface, with clear labelling and tactile control over every parameter. MIDI controllers however, often present you with an uninspiring interface with mismatching colours, incorrect text or inaccurate labels. More importantly, they often can't handle more advanced functions like modulation assignment, interactive LED feedback or multi-button control over one single function. I also forget which knob I midi mapped to which function and so on ... I didn't connect with them like I do with hardware - until now.

This is exactly why I developed the aurex DIVA CTRL bundle. This bundle makes the Novation LaunchControl XL function as the ultimate MIDI controller for for U-He's Diva software synthesizer. I built a custom MIDI template (using advanced programming with BOME) that translates every Launch Control XL's MIDI message into all kinds of relevant MIDI data for Diva, offering much more possibilities than the original Launch Control XL's functions. In addition, I designed a hardware cover that fits on top of the Launch Control XL and has all these new features printed. This bundle comes with everything included (midi software, presets and a hard cover) to get you started right away.

Spherical Sound Society - Opera Rotas Experimental FM Drum Machine

ZElTGElST

"First demo of the machine. Please excuse the poor direct audio. I will be uploading quality captures to soundcloud in the coming days.

Live it sounds crisp, crystal clear aun unique beyond words.

I have written an experiemtal synth/drummachine around the Megadrive FM audio chip. The firmware is in progress. The machine creates patters at the fly that you can mangle and tweak with mostly all the FM parameters in real time.

Its plenty of beautiful electronic landscapes, rythms and techno mayhem.

The unit has a midi in port, so you can play it with a keyboard too (this firmware is to be implemented, if any)

Some units and PCBs will be available to sell in the coming weeks at my tindie store:

https://www.tindie.com/stores/jc2046/"

"OPERA ROTAS is a mutant, generative drum machine. It's built around a Yamaha OPL2 FM audio chip, a close cousin of the Sega Genesis / Megadrive consoles.

At the core, it has a real Yamaha OPL2 audio chip and live sounds bonkers. Brutal, it's all body weight while being crystal clear and punchy. Really the videos don't do aural justice but it serves to get an idea. There will be decent audio demos coming to my Soundcloud soon.

The firmware is a work in progress. One branch of the firmware consists of attaching a midi keyboard to it and converting it into a fully fledged polyphonic synth.

The project will go open source at some point. I just ask for people to not do commercial PCBs of it, as I sell it here. If you get one PCB or kit you can ask for the source code to tweak it if you will.

It comes in 4 flavours:

Built unit. Ready to plug and play.
Full kit. Everything you need to build one. You need to solder it. Beginners level.
Basic kit. The PCB plus a programmed SMT32 microcontroller. You source the rest of the components.
PCB alone. You source all the components, program the chip, and run it."

PREVIEW: Timetosser - restructure patterns live! (kickstarter)

Dave Mech

"Here's the kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

I only had the time to play with it for a few hours because it's one of the few prototypes currently available, but I already had a lot of fun using it. I would love to experiment more with it in my liveset. Trying different things like using it on a synth track only to restructure melodies from an arpeggiator for instance.
Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with this project. It's a local project from Utrecht that I want to support and I think is a cool idea. It would be great to have around as an additional performance tool. :)"

"Timetosser enables you to playfully reorder any kind of musical input in real-time. The power is at your fingertips to instantly add variety to your tracks and loops. Just connect any audio source and you're good to go!

Cereal Instruments THUMP // Vactrol Based LPG & VCA with distortion (Eurorack module)

Note this is the first Cereal Instruments post on the site.

"'thump' is a versatile vactrol LPG & VCA with distortion. 'Thump' allows you to send two signals through a gritty vactrol amp with low pass gate modes & plenty of gain pre & post distortion."

It's also available as a DIY kit. The following is the build video:

And an overview by DivKid:

DivKidVideo

"Here’s the new THUMP Eurorack module from Cereal Instruments. It’s a 6HP Vactrol based LPG / VCA with added distortion and character. A rotary switch let’s you select VCA mode and 3 increasingly steep filtering options. There’s two inputs with a crossfader, CV input for the gate level and a make up gain control. It distorts and adds a quirky character easily but backing off amp CV and gain lets you clean things up.

Eurorack Modules by TomaTekAudio

Update: demos posted here.

TomaTekAudio is a new maker from Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

You'll find their modules available at their Etsy shop here.

Details on the first three follow.

Tomatek-Audio MMVCF.

a High-end AS3320 based 12dB-per-Octave multi-mode filter module. With separate outputs for Low-Pass, Notch, Band-Pass and High-Pass. Based on the design of the OBx-A filter, but with several tweaks and improvements.

Featuring:

- CV control over Filter-Cutoff and Resonance, with a fixed V/Oct input, switchable attenuation/attenuversion on the FM-input and attenuation on the Resonance CV input.

- Self-Oscillation with accurate temperature compensated V/Oct tracking over approximately 6 octaves, which allows for a very nice playable sine wave.

- Input gain control with a soft-clipping circuit that kicks in at around the 12o'clock setting, with typical eurorack levels. Allowing for clean tones till unity-gain and soft-clipping and eventually hard-clipping the filter front-end at higher gain settings. When used in conjunction with a VCA before the filter, this will allow for a nice range of extra tones.

- Makes use of high quality parts where applicable (Wima Polypropylene capacitors for timing, Nichicon Bi-polar audio capacitors for ac-coupling, Panasonic and Nichicon electrolytics, Texas Instruments Audio-Grade Opamps and of course ALFA AS3320 filter chip).

- 8HP width.

- current draw: +12V 25ma, -12V 25ma, +5V 0ma.

- Skiff friendly at 35mm deep."

Tomatek-Audio Matrix-4x2.

a 4 input 2 output dc-coupled mixer, capable of mixing audio and/or cv sources. The Matrix 4x2 has several uses, including but not limited to: attenuation, inversion, dc-offset, dual cv-mixer, stereo audio-mixer, audio-mixer with effects send/return

Featuring:

- Switchable attenuversion/attenuation per output channel.

- Switchable dc-offset on input 4: +5V / off / -5V, allows for mixing in dc-offsets..

- Bi-polar led on each output channel for signal visualisation.

- Expansion headers on the back allows for chaining multiple Matrix-4x2 modules. This makes it possible to expand either the inputs and/or the outputs.

- Makes use of high quality parts where applicable (Panasonic and Nichicon electrolytics and Texas Instruments Audio-Grade Opamps).

- Skiff friendly!

TomaTek-Audio MULT

New ElectroTechnique TSynth - DIY Teensy Synth

ElectroTechnique

Note this is the first post to feature ElectroTechnique.

"TSynth is a DIY synth based on the Teensy 3.6 MCU board. It is six voice polyphonic with two oscillators and very comprehensive control and options. Patch saving and recall, three MIDI in options and USB digital audio. It is open source and the PCB and front panel are now available to buy on Tindie. The intention was that the cost of parts to build this synth are around $99 and it should be a serious instrument. There are many features and full details are on https://electrotechnique.cc

All sounds are directly from TSynth with built-in stereo chorus - Youtube tends to muffle the sound, the bass will go very low. I'm hoping that end users will produce better demos and contribute to the code."

Specs via ElectroTechnique:

Oscillators

Six voice polyphony (last note priority), two oscillators per voice, detunable with +/- 2 octaves range, Sine/ Sample & Hold (like tuned noise)/ Square/ Sawtooth/ Ramp/ PWM/ Var Triangle/ User waveforms and level
Pulse Width/ Var Triangle can be set for each oscillator with PWM by dedicated LFO or from the filter envelope
Pink or white noise level
Dedicated LFO for pitch mod (can be retriggered by note on), Sine/ Triangle/ Sawtooth/ Ramp/ Square/ S&H waveforms
Pitch can be modulated by filter envelope (+/-)
XOR ‘Ring Mod’ (creates lots of harmonics with certain waveforms)
Unison with all twelve oscillators detunable from each other
Polyphonic Glide with variable time

Filter
State variable 12dB filter (SVF) with continuous mix between LP and HP (provides notch filter) and BP
Cutoff freq and resonance

Cutoff can be modulated by dedicated ADSR envelope (+/-), dedicated LFO
LFO has same waveforms as pitch LFO (can be retriggered by note on) and rate can be set to match MIDI clock (tempo) with variable time division (1,3/4,1/2,1/4,1/8…)

Amplifier
Dedicated ADSR envelope
Volume for DAC output
Effect amount and mix - currently for stereo ensemble chorus rate and mix but could be set up to allow choices in programmer

Programmer
160x80 IPS colour display
Encoder with button for data entry, Back button for menu navigation
Save and Recall buttons for storing patches, holding Recall initialises the current patch to match the panel controls. Holding the Save button takes you into a patch deletion page.
The programmer makes the synth very flexible with future possibilities for changing User waveforms, alternative filters, alternative effects with further parameter settings.

One-off MDMAFX Dual Uglyface Custom Fuzz Distortion Noise Synth tabletop pedal

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"One-off MDMAFX Dual Uglyface Custom Fuzz Distortion Noise tabletop pedal. This is a very odd dual distortion pedal that I had made by MDMAFX several years ago. It’s based on their Uglyface fuzz design but doubled everything with extra switches and 4 LFO’s! Designed for tabletop use. Gotten sounds out of it that I’ve never heard before, strange metallic oscillations and grindy high harmonics. I don’t even know how everything works, it was a highly experimental build. Some cosmetic wear from smoke-free studio usage. Takes a standard Boss 9v power supply."

Ghielmetti Pin Matrix Kit for the Teenage Engineering POM-400

via matrix.vondle.com

"A bolt-on kit to turn your Teenage Engineering Pocket Modular 400 into a matrix synth like the revered EMS Synthi. Instead of using cables to patch outputs of one module into inputs of another, you use the supplied pins to connect a row (output) to the corresponding column (input).

The matrix itself is made in Switzerland by Ghielmetti, the original manufacturer of the pin matrices on the EMS Synthi, EMS VCS3, ETI International 4600 and the Maplin 5600.

The kit simply bolts onto the back of the POM-400 modules with the supplied hardware - there is no soldering required. Once bolted on, it enables you to make 100% of all the patches you could otherwise make using cables, with the added benefit of having virtually no restrictions on the number of available outputs and inputs for each module. Patch cables can still be used in conjunction with the matrix for interfacing the system with external modules and running sound out from the device.

For more details and to place an order go to matrix.vondle.com"

Eurorack polyphony in 52 HP (single filter)

Published on May 24, 2020 joeSeggiola

"My personal take on polyphony in Eurorack. Recorded in spring 2020.
DIY MIDI to 4x CV/gate interface: https://github.com/joeSeggiola/arduin...
MI Stages custom firmware: https://github.com/joeSeggiola/eurora...

Patch notes, from left to right:

- A DIY MIDI interface (link above) allocates notes polyphonically from the keyboard into four channels of CV/gate. The additional top-most gate output is a combined OR.
- CVs are sent to Chord v2 in Unison Poly Mode: each oscillator is controlled independently by its own 1V/oct input.
- Gates are sent to Stages, which runs a custom firmware (link above) that generates five identical envelopes.
- Veils uses four of these envelopes to drive one VCA for each of the four voices coming from Chord's individual outputs.
- WMD SSF Pole-Zero filters the final mix from Veils; its cutoff is modulated using the fifth envelope from Stages, the one triggered by the OR-gate signal.

[ 0:00 ] Overview, simple melody
[ 1:13 ] Filtered chords
[ 2:04 ] Overlapping arpeggios
[ 3:44 ] Wavetables exploration

I'm not claiming this is the way to get polyphony in Eurorack, I'm just sharing the result of my latest DIY and coding projects."

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #91: MEGA MIDI - Song 1

Published on May 23, 2020 Christian's Sonic Spaces

I believe tis is the first post to feature the MEGA MIDI by Aidan Lawrence.

"This is the first song with the MEGA MIDI by Aidan Lawrence. It's an FM synthesizer based on either the YM2612 yamaha chip (used here and in SEGA Genesis / Megadrive home consoles and various SEGA arcade game systems, including the Mega-Play, System 18, and System 32) or the cleaner sounding YM3438 chip without the crossover distortion in the output. Both sound chips has six channels with four operators per channel.

In contradiction to the Kasser DAFM Synth you can't program the sounds but just load via SD card opm-file game sounds from the SEGA Genesis / Megadrive games (currently more than 9500 opm-files available). The game music composers did a great job to programming the best out of the 4 OP FM synth. So it's a lot of fun to dive through all the game sounds.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
MEGA MIDI - DigiTech Obscura - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."
