Teenage Engineering Eurorack, POM-400 Matrix Kits & Talking to Aliens with a Steiner Masters Touch

Talking to Aliens video upload by Dave Vondle

This is a bit of a triple post. Dave Vondle of http://matrix.vondle.com wrote in to let me know the final 9 units of the Ghielmetti Pin Matrix Kit for the Teenage Engineering POM-400, previously posted here, have been completed. It's featured in the video above and in a post by Teenage Engineering on converting their Pocket Operator Modules (POM) to eurorack.

That said, first the description for the video above:

"Figured out how to communicate to extraterrestrial organisms.

The Calmset 3 connected to my brain is generating the frequencies - and the Masters Touch is taking breath, bite, and touch into the Teenage Engineering POM-400 (with my matrix kit attached). Breath controls the amplitude and bite/touch modify filter parameters. This all runs through the VOCU tape echo."

See here for some additional posts featuring the Masters Touch including pics. You can also find some info on Patchman Music here.

Second, info on the final batch of Matrix Kits from http://matrix.vondle.com:

"Over a year ago I created a bolt-on kit to turn a Teenage Engineering Pocket Modular 400 into a matrix synth like the EMS Synthi. Instead of using cables to patch outputs from one module into inputs of another, you use the supplied pins to connect a row (output) to the corresponding column (input).

I have completed the final batch of 9 kits, as the manufacturer of the matrices recently went out of business. Teenage engineering just wrote a blog post featuring the kit, so I figured it would be a good time to get these last kits out there.

More info about the kit:

The matrix itself was made in Switzerland by the established patchbay company, Ghielmetti, and the kit simply bolts onto the back of the POM-400 modules with the supplied hardware - there is no soldering required. Once bolted on, it enables you to make 100% of all the patches you could otherwise make using cables, with the added benefit of having virtually no restrictions on the number of available outputs and inputs for each module. Patch cables can still be used in conjunction with the matrix for interfacing the system with external modules and running sound out from the device.

I thought you folks might be interested! For more details and to place an order go to matrix.vondle.com

Bonus Video - Here’s me when I patched a Steiner Master’s Voice into the POM-400, with the kit installed:" [above]

Third: eurorack conversions for Teenage Engineering's Pocket Operator Modules (and euro racking Pocket Operators):

via Teenage Engineering: eurorack is a very common system format when it comes to modular synths. there are tons of modules and manufacturers on the market and the pocket operator modular series is eurorack compatible. this means any POM system can be used together with any other module, from any other brand. while the pocket rack format is slightly smaller than eurorack, you only need some minor tweaks to fit your pocket operator modules in your eurorack system.

here are a few ways to 'eurorackify' your pocket operator modulars and pocket operators, plus a bonus mod to really expand the capabilities of your POM-400.

eurorack front panels for POM
the two companies malm.audio and jklmnt have joined forces and created custom eurorack front panels for the complete range of modules available in the pocket operator modular POM-400 and POM-170. pick your favorite module and mount that in your existing eurorack system, or create a complete replica of an entire system. the various panels range from 6 hp width, up to 18 hp.

power adapters
they've also made a convenient power adapter that easily converts the power connector from pocket rack to eurorack. no soldering is required and everything above is available through the oddvolt webstore.

pokit for POM-16 by grayscale
the company grayscale makes modules and stylish eurorack front panels for a lot of products. their pokit is a eurorack conversion kit for the POM-16 keyboard. the front panel has a matte black finish and is 42 hp wide. the kit even comes with matching gray official knobs. this is a great option for enabling your system with the 4-channel sequencer, arpeggiator and keyboard that is the POM-16.

pocket operators and eurorack
the usually hand-held regular pocket operators can also be used in a eurorack system. this could for instance be a great way to create a portable and powerful grab-and-go live performance instrument, or to have pocket operators tightly and neatly integrated into your studio setup. here are two examples of how to mount pocket operators in a eurorack case.

Ghielmetti Pin Matrix Kit for the Teenage Engineering POM-400

via matrix.vondle.com

"A bolt-on kit to turn your Teenage Engineering Pocket Modular 400 into a matrix synth like the revered EMS Synthi. Instead of using cables to patch outputs of one module into inputs of another, you use the supplied pins to connect a row (output) to the corresponding column (input).

The matrix itself is made in Switzerland by Ghielmetti, the original manufacturer of the pin matrices on the EMS Synthi, EMS VCS3, ETI International 4600 and the Maplin 5600.

The kit simply bolts onto the back of the POM-400 modules with the supplied hardware - there is no soldering required.

This device is not a synthesizer, the people uses it to put inside analog synthesizer modules, like VCF, VCA, VCO, Envelope, Sequencer etc. It seems like a a EMS SYNTHI, thats why is so sought after."

SYNTHESIZER MAGAZIN Sets up for Musikmesse 2012

You'll find a few more pics on sequencer.de. The write-up is in German, but you can find a Goglish version here.

Four synth-centric booths are called out. The EMC booth including gear from Moog, Schmidt, Radikal Technologies, and John Bowen Synth Design with the Solaris. You might remember the EMC booth showcasing The Schmidt at NAMM 2012 in my uber post here. Radikal had their own booth at NAMM. Buchla 200e is at the SM Pro booth in Hall 5.1, and Ghielmetti (Airbourne / Martin Hollinger) with his AVS04 is in in Hall. BTW, if you haven't seen the AVS04, it's pretty incredible. Click on the Airbourne label below and check out previous posts (don't miss these pics). It's a custom modular by Martin Hollinger of the Synthorama synth museum in Switzerland.

Steckmatrix "Studio Synthesizer" Modular Format Analog Synthesizer

via this auction

Googlish translation (note some modules are faulty):
"The construction with the Ghielmetti matrix is similar to the EMS Synthi A / Vostok

The "Studio Synthesizer" (his name in the documents) was built in the early 1980s for a music institute. His then the price was a good 5-digit range. It was built based on the format module system, which were, according to the designer and builder of some of the modules nor modified. This is now due to space and light overhaul of need (and lack of detailed electronic and time budget) as possible to a collector, analog synth lovers and / or music-electronics hobbyist sale. (... Ok to the highest bidder ...)

It consists of three modules ("Keyboard / Matrix", "Links: VCOs / LFOs, Right: VCF / ADSRs" and a solid metal frame with castors.

He is very elegant in the different parts and dismantled the frame, the modules and the frame are visible to Langen "handle" screws (left of the big picture) is connected.

Also inside the synthesizer is very loving, clean and professionally built.

The (most likely) complete the design, modification and construction documents are supplied in a DIN A4 Ordener. For example, there are even invoices, data sheets used chips, many clean-hands design drawings and even films for the exposure time while platinum production.

Airböurne Synthesizer System

flickr set by Brättli Airböurne
(click for more)

You might remember the Airböurne from this post on my visit to Synthorama. Be sure to click on the Airböurne and Synthorama labels below for more.

Update you can see a video of the Airböurne modular here minus the sequencer. You can actually see the blank panel case of the sequencer at the start of the video.

New to the system is the Airböurne Sequencer AMS-496.

Update: Martin from Synthorama wrote in with more details. The Airböurne Synthesizer System will be shown at the Musikmesse at the Ghielmetti booth in hall 8, row H, booth 14. Martin will be there throughout the show. The following is some more detail on the sequencer:

"The sequencer has 4 independent tracks with up to 96 notes. You can place plugs in four different colours, corresponding to the four tracks. It is possible to place notes over 5 octaves. Every track you can also transpose 2 octaves down and 2 octaves up, so you have 9 octaves in total.

In the brown rows you can place white plugs if you want a gliding effect between the notes. You can choose every note of every track.

The red rows for Skip and Stop are not implemented yet. The red Repeat row allows to set an end of a melody, from where the sequencer repeats the melody.

The green Duration rows allow calibrated note lengths for every column. If you wish to have different note length at the same column for the tracks you must use the green Gate Hold rows for combining the note lengths.

The blue Volume rows allow to change the volume of every note of every track in 9 different levels. The blue Pan rows allow to define on which channel the notes will sound. You have the possibility to choose left, right, mono and random pan, for every note and every track. There are built in four independent pseudo random generators.

The white pitch rows are splittable in up to three independent sections. Here you can place up to three melodies. For every section you can define how many repeats (1 to 64) they have to run. So you can create small songs with three sections.

The internal beat generator counts from 20 bpm up to 300 bpm and the frequency you can alter with an external control voltage. With an externel quarter note clock the sequencer synchronizes in the limits between 10 bpm and 400 bpm. Later it will be possible to synchronize it via Midi clock (not implemented yet).

At rear you have the possibility to use the Pitch-CV, the Gate and the Trigger Outputs for every analogue synthesizer which uses 1 V/octave. The volume and pan signals are not available for analog synths because they are digital coded for the Airböurne Synth AVS-04 only.

On the exhibited model not all ist working perfectly.

Actually these malfunctions are known:
The bottom row (lowest C) of the pitch panel reacts not in the same column at the other rows.
The functions skip + and skip - are not working properly.
Sometimes some notes disappear or have the wrong pitch or note length. This is a timing error in one of the FPGAs.
The number of pitch plugs you can place on one row is limited, dependent of track, to 3 to 12 plugs.
The LSB digit of the internal beat generator will be only updated if the sequencer is in Repeat Mode :-) This is a real nice software bug in one of the micro controllers."

Pin Patch Matrix

via this auction
auction details:
"The possibilities are endless with these patch matrices. They are much smaller versions of those found on the VCS 3, Synthi, and Vostok synthesizers. I haven't been able to locate the manufacturer's name on theses guys.

They would be great for circuit bending the smaller synths and toys
or maybe you could mount all four in a square, cover that with a "master" face panel, and spread out the pin nputs to create a Synthi sized matrix and give yourself more finger room.

I have four of these in perfect shape.

Each matrix ships with 10 gold-plated pins."

Looks like a Ghielmetti patch matrix.
