KORG Introduces the SQ-64 Polyphonic Sequencer

Korg

Playlist:

1. “Step Up” with the SQ-64 Polyphonic Sequencer
2. Korg’s SQ-64 Polyphonic Sequencer: A Brief Overview
3. KORG SQ-64 Review and full tutorial - leploop

"There's nothing that offers the combination of CV control, MIDI & Audio sync, and polyphonic multitrack sequencing that Korg’s SQ-64 does. Compact as it may be, it gives you three tracks, each with dedicated Pitch, Mod, and Gate output, plus a fourth Drum-Sub track with a total of 16 triggers; eight gates and eight over MIDI. Each of the 64 step buttons uses graduated LEDs to show you exactly what's going on in your track, and a crisp OLED screen gives you an at-a-glance look at details. It's all packed into a rugged aluminum case roughly an inch thick for durability and portability - every step of the way"

via KORG:

"The SQ-64 is an incredibly powerful and compact Polyphonic Step Sequencer with amazing hands-on intuitive controls and deep editing options to give you all the flexibility and sequencing power needed for all your musical projects. With its 64 step pad Matrix, Crystal clear OLED display, sturdy and elegant aluminium body, a wealth of connections and a variety of modes and features, the SQ-64 will become the central piece of your music studio providing total and seamless control over all your instruments so you can focus on what matters most; your music!

Despite its compact size, the SQ-64 has unparalleled connectivity and will allow you to easily control, connect and make the most of all your analog and digital gear. MIDI IN (x1) and OUT (x2), micro USB type B, Sync IN & OUT, 3 Melody tracks each with MODULATION, PITCH and GATE outputs and a DRUM track with 8 individual trigger outputs for controlling analog synths, Eurorack, and drum machines.

Each of the Melody tracks (x3) has 16 Patterns of up to 64 steps each, and the Drum track (x1) has 16 Sub-tracks also with up to 64 steps each, that can be played, chained and edited in a variety of ways.

Melody tracks and patterns can be edited in several modes (GATE, PITCH and MODULATION) so you can alter the information sent by your sequencer on each of these steps in many interesting ways.

The DRUM track outputs can be fine-tuned to match the polarity and voltage of your connected device(s). Its audio Sync In & Out connections will allow you to seamlessly control all your other Korg gear such as the volca synthesizer series, minilogue, monologue, minilogue xd, prologue and many others!

Whether you are into Analog synths, Eurorack semi-modular synths, Digital drum machines, or do everything on your DAW with digital plugins, the SQ-64 will give you instant and precise hands-on control of each and all of these.

The SQ-64 has 64 beautifully LED-lit Step button pads that not only let you see the whole picture at once, but also allow for super-fast and satisfactory editing with its encoder knobs and dedicated mode buttons that will simplify and speed up your workflow. Each step has graduated lighting; the higher the modulation value, the stronger the button lights up to give you a clear visual on what’s going on in the sequence.

The OLED Display is crystal clear, bright and visible from any angle, so you can have access to all the information you need no matter whether you are making music at home, in the studio or playing live!

The 3 melody tracks include a MODULATION output, so every step on your sequence can be creating complex modulations on your gear of choice, greatly expanding your options and possibilities for sound creation. It has never been easier to create polyphonic chords patterns, melodies, complex poly-rhythms and modulations on the fly and record them as data on each of the 64 project slots available.

REAL-TIME CONTROL

The SQ-64 won’t just allow you to create incredible sequences; it packs several features and modes that will let you edit on the fly and play any of your gear real-time.

The 64 pad Matrix can be also be used as a Keyboard, allowing for several layouts to be used for maximum flexibility (several scales can be assigned to any of these and a number of other parameters can be easily changed)

Introducing Crazy Chain! New approach to daisy chaining

Gaz Williams

New Crazy Chain from myVolts. They are running a promo for the day: "Buy any Ripcord and get one free Crazy Chain, add code CRAZYVOLTS at checkout, code's good to midnight 22nd October." Link: https://myvolts.co.uk

"What is myVolts Crazy Chain?

Did you ever want to power a number of synths and pedals, but find that your existing daisy chain cable just didn't cut it? Wrong size connectors, wrong size polarity, unused connectors, unsuitable cable lengths can all be a hassle you don't need when you just want to make music.

Crazy Chain is a flexible, mix and match cable solution to let you power your gear just the way you want to. Choose tip: You choose which DC power tip size each Crazy Chain connector has, so you can plug, for example, a Korg Volca (1.7mm inner diameter / 4.7mm outer diameter) in the same chain as a Boss guitar pedal (2.1mm inner diameter / 5.5mm outer diameter). Mix and match tips to suit exactly your devices.

Change polarity: You can change polarity from positive to negative as you go along the chain, you can even change it back! Polarity change is identified by an orange DC input, so whenever power passes through this connection, it will change polarity. Make sure to check your instrument specification to ensure it receives the correct polarity. Chain devices: Crazy Chain lets you power only the devices you want to power, whether that's 3 devices or 12 devices. This means no more looking for extra connectors to suit your specific setup, and no more hanging dog-leg connectors adding noise into your audio.

The right lengths: Choose from 3 different cable lengths to suit your setups."

Soundmanufacture Modular Sequencer - overview / how to start

Soundmanufacture

"This Video shows the basics how modular sequencer works.

0:11 the eight sequencers
0:25 the (internal) Outputs
0:44 patching
2:15 using different channels
2:50 Scales & Scale Correction
3:06 using the modifiers
5:05 random actions and switching things

Thank you!

download at http://www.soundmanufacture.net"

Modular Sequencer is a Max for Live Step Sequencer for Ableton Live 10.
The Modular Sequencer is a very flexible Sequencer, where you can patch every module with any other.

You can create Sequences from concrete & repetitive to totally endless & random.
The eight Sequencers can run in Sync or every single Sequencer can with it's own speed. Four of the eight sequencers are Trigger Sequencers to Trigger or to switch actions. The other four Sequencers can send out Values and Triggers (thru the Threshold)

The Value Sequencers can be assigned free to control the:
• Notes
• Velocity
• Ocatve
• Lenght.
of every of the four Outputs.

On every Output you'll find a Scale Correction, where you are able to create Sequences that always fit into the selected Scale or you can also learn Scales from the MIDI Input.

It also works Hand in Hand with the Chord-O-Mat 3.1 Device (the Update will be available soon) That means the Sequencer can be set up that it will have always the same Scale like Chord-O-Mat. If you change the Scale in Chord-O-Mat the Sequencer will select the same scale & vice versa.

It's also possible, that an Output of the Sequencer can follow the Chordprogression of Chord-O-Mat.

features of modular sequencer

• All Trigger Signals can be routed free from every Output to every Input thru the Patch-chords.
• create Polyphonic Sequences
• 4 internal Outputs where you can assign the Sequencers to the Note, Velocity, Octave & Length
• Scale Correction in every of the four Outputs
• Scaleable GUI from 80% to 140%
• Modulation Section, where you have up to 8 Modulators to invert a signal, probability & filter Triggersteps,
• 4 locical operators, where you can combine the Value of two sequences."

Roland Introduces WM-1 And WM-1D Wireless Midi Products

The PR via Roland:

"Easy-to-Use Products Provide Low-Latency Wireless MIDI Communication Between Electronic Musical Instruments, MIDI Hardware, Computers, and iOS Devices

Los Angeles, CA, September 25, 2020 — Roland announces the WM-1 Wireless MIDI Adaptor and WM-1D Wireless MIDI Dongle, two innovative new products that bring the convenience of wireless MIDI to modern music creators. Easy to set up and use, the WM-1 and WM-1D provide wireless MIDI communication between multiple devices, including keyboards, drum machines, and other MIDI hardware, Mac and Windows computers, and iOS mobile devices. In addition to MIDI note data, users can send MIDI sync for tempo, effects, LFOs, loops, and more—all without connecting a single cable.

For today’s musicians and producers, there are many situations where wireless MIDI is a real problem solver. It can provide a clean, mobile setup with just a MIDI keyboard and a laptop, iPhone, or iPad, or eliminate a long cable run from a favorite MIDI controller to a DAW. And in live performance situations, wireless MIDI provides smoother workflow and reduced setup time. Once users have had the unencumbered experience of Roland wireless MIDI, they'll never want to go back.

The WM-1 connects to MIDI hardware devices with standard 5-pin MIDI I/O, while the WM-1D connects to computers and iOS devices via USB. Standard mode provides low-latency MIDI communication between up to four total devices. Fast mode reduces latency to 3 ms—better than the internal speed of many hardware devices—providing ultra-fast communication between two WM units for timing-critical applications.

WM units can communicate with each other, and with MIDI music apps on an iOS device and Mac computer in Standard mode via Bluetooth MIDI. The WM-1D is ideal for Windows computers, which don’t have Bluetooth MIDI support built in. Users of Mac computers and iOS devices can also use the WM-1D to gain the benefits of Fast mode. (USB connection with iOS devices requires the appropriate Apple adaptor.)

Availability & Pricing
The WM-1 will be available for $69.99 and the WM-1D will be available for $79.99 in October 2020."

Hypercube VST: Reduce 100+ Synth Parameters to Just 3

Novel Insight Software

https://www.novelinsight.fi

Here is an interesting program in via Novel Insight Software. In short it uses artificial intelligence to pick from all available parameters in creating a three new parameter. The three act as macro controls for the parameters selected and they can change over time. One of the thing that makes the Yamaha DX-200 and the newer Reface DX are the macro controls allowing you to morph multiple FM parameters at the same time. And of course there's the macro knob on the Yamaha MODX series.

The following is what Novel Insight Software had to say about the software:

"We have been developing a new (still beta) software which makes it easier to find new sounds from VST synths. (Novel Insight Hypercube VST).

The freeware software uses machine learning to analyze presets and reduces the number of parameters to three making it easier to find new sounds. Currently VST2 plugins are supported.

The algorithms start from a random starting points so the results are a bit different everytime parameters are calculated, especially when there are no large number of presets available (machine learning methods require large amount of data and typically the number of presets are only in hundreds meaning the results depend on a random starting points).

Software is also quite slow on laptops, it can take 10 minutes or hours to calculate parameter reduction for a single VST instrument. I’m developing GPU acceleration which should speed up calculations significantly."

And via their website where you can find the download and a few demos: https://www.novelinsight.fi

"Hypercube VST is a parameter reducer plugin for VST2 instruments. It reduces the number of synthesizer/effect parameters to just three (3) which makes it easier to find new sounds than changing 100+ parameters that may be available through the normal user interface.

In order to to do parameter reduction a VST module must have roughly more presets of good instruments/effects than there are synthesizer parameters. The existing good presets are used to find "three dimensional space of good sounds", which can be then explored by using only three parameters: X, Y and Z.

Hypercube VST currently supports only 64bit VST2 modules. Support of 64bit VST3 instruments is planned in future releases. This software requires 64bit Windows 10 (earlier versions not tested) and 64bit Java (plugin generator user interface).

Hypercube VST is free to use (freeware) but closed source."

SOMA Lab ORNAMENT-8 Organismic Sequencer

ORNAMENT-8 organismic sequencer. Demo (SOMA Lab)

"An experimental analog modular sequencer based on a completely new principle of synthesis of behaviour."

ORNAMENT-8 self developing composition (demo by SOMA Lab)

Vlad Kreimer

"Example of generative self-developing composition"

ORNAMENT-8 example of performance. (demo by SOMA laboratory)

via SOMA Lab

"ORNAMENT can be controlled via Eurorack-compatible Control Voltage. The output of ORNAMENT is also standard CV signals that can control LYRA-8, PULSAR-23, Eurorack systems and any equipment that can receive CV, including non-audio ones such as lighting setups or electromechanical installations. For controlling LYRA-8 we developed a special adapter for easy connection to the LYRA sensors while also preserving the ability to play it normally with your fingers.

The adapter attaches to LYRA’s surface using magnets which make installation easy and safe. ORNAMENT, as an organismic sequencer, complements LYRA’s organismic synthesis nature, making them a perfect pair.

ORNAMENT-8 is based on a completely new principle of synthesis of behaviour. Instead of a vertical structure with a tempo generator on top and some memory for storing sequenced events, we have a dynamic equilibrium inside a horizontal structure without any memory, just an infinite “now” that generates the next moment of behaviour. In certain key aspects, it resembles a neural network where there is no difference between “processor” and “memory”, where functions are blurred and all structures are very flexible. Because the ORNAMENT is fully modular, you can connect any number of ORNAMENTs into a single network, creating very complex multi-dimensional structures with the same complex behaviour. For those with philosophical inclinations, ORNAMENT is a playground the size of a box of chocolates where you can study fundamental laws of life and society, going beyond linear logical thinking.

ORNAMENT-8 was designed by Vadim Minkin, the new creative mind who recently joined SOMA laboratory. ORNAMENT is intended to be the first in a line of SOMA sequencers developing new principles of behaviour generation and control."

Tauntek Rhodes Chroma Dual Channel Board Tester

via Tauntek

"I have been thinking for several years that I would like to design a test fixture for Chroma voice boards, to allow stand-alone testing with easy access to the circuitry. Initially I was planning to have the tester automatically run through a number of tests and give an overall pass/fail result. But I decided it would be better to offer tests that would be helpful in evaluating a board, and let the user make the decisions. In addition to the tests, I implemented a full manual mode, with control over all parameters. The tester requires +/- 12.0 volts DC, well regulated as these voltages power the voice board. Current limiting would be nice, if possible. The tester and voice board together draw less than 150 mA from either supply.

"Bastl is more than excited to announce the Midilooper! Rather than being a sequencer, it is a device inspired by audio looper style workflow with a really fast, performative, single gesture interface.
Looping is a blazing fast way of music making and looping in the control signal domain is a key feature that allows for all remaining parameters of your device to be tweaked and modulated on top of the looped sequence... or MIDI CC looped!

Midilooper has been in development for over 3 years and several iterations of the control interface and connectivity have been extensively tested within the context of a live performance. It has the ability to bring a live setup or a studio to new life and make you explore your gear in a refreshing, hands–on manner.
Midilooper can be synchronised to MIDI or analog clock and it can also run on its own (tap tempo/free running). It has 3 voices that can each be assigned to a different MIDI channel, allowing it to control and loop 3 individual units of gear. Each voice can be individually recorded, muted, overdubbed, or cleared.

Midilooper also offers some basic processing of the recorded information: transposition, velocity locking and shifting, quantisation, shuffle, humanisation (random variations of velocity), adjusting the length of the loop, or doubling and halving of playback speed.

In addition, it features CV and trigger inputs for seamless integration with modular synths: reset, retrigger, velocity, and transpose. It can also be controlled with foot pedals.

iConnectivity Introduces mioXC - Worlds First USB C MIDI Interface

via iConnectivity

"We're proud to bring you our latest MIDI interface, the mioXC. mioXC is the world's first USB Type-C MIDI interface.

We designed mioXC around the latest connectivity standards demanded by modern musicians; all in a pocket-sized, super affordable package.

A Pocket Powerhouse
Tiny in size and price, yet big on connectivity, mioXC is a pocket-sized powerhouse!

mioXC is a fuss-free and simple 1 in 1 out, 16 channel USB-MIDI interface you can use to connect your MIDI compatible gear.

Whether you have a controller keyboard, synthesizer, drum machine or whatever; mioXC lets you connect them to your Mac, PC, iOS, or Android computing device.

What Makes mioXC Unique?

Even the most basic tasks need to be done right; it’s surprising how many of our competitors interfaces get it wrong. We engineered mioXC, from the ground up to, to be the interface we’d want to use ourselves.

Modern USB Connectivity - Equipped with both USB Type-C and USB Type-A connectivity, mioXC lets you enjoy easy connectivity with most modern computing devices.

Driver Compatibility - Interfaces that use their own drivers have to be updated all the time, or they stop working properly. Likewise some designs were USB Class-Compliant years ago, but today they aren't anymore. We engineer our drivers to today's strict guidelines, and keep them updated, to ensure compatibility for years to come.

MIDI Management - Our interfaces deliver MIDI reliably no matter what. When the MIDI data-stream gets heavy, our interfaces plough on where other interfaces choke.

Rock-Solid Electrical Design - Some MIDI interfaces introduce noise, or worse, crash your system. You’ll never get that from an iConnectivity interface.

Performance Optimized - A MIDI interface that works too slowly is useless. mioXC uses a powerful 32-bit ARM Cortex processor, ensuring dense MIDI and SysEx streams are managed with ease.

The iConnectivity Advantage: iConnectivity’s name on your interface means we took the time to do it right, whether it's our simple 1 x 1 models to our uniquely sophisticated high-end interfaces."

Novation Circuit Pan Automation

Waveformer

"This video demonstrates pan automation on the Novation Circuit using the Circuit Bender web application available at https://www.waveformer.net/circuitben....

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

The Novation Circuit is connected by USB to my laptop running the Chrome web browser. The Circuit Bender web application listens to the incoming MIDI messages from the macro controls for Synth 1 and Synth 2 on the Novation Circuit and sends the MIDI messages for synth and drum panning back to the Circuit.

Since macro controls can be recorded and played back by the Circuit, it is possible to achieve pan automation on the Circuit using the Circuit Bender web application. This web application will only work in the Chrome and the Opera web browser, since they support Web MIDI.

This is a hack with some limitations, but it works for me, and I had a lot of fun creating it. Enjoy! And let me know about your experience with this in the comments :-).

Gear:
- Novation Circuit
- Laptop running the Chrome web browser
- Korg Mini Kaoss Pad 2S (for recording)

Connections:
- Circuit connected to the laptop using USB
- Circuit audio - KP2S (for recording)"

New Stereoping PolyChainer MIDI Polyphony Tool

Stereoping 2020/07 PolyChainer product demo by Stereoping

"The PolyChainer is a little Midi tool enabling 12 note polyphony with two Matrix 1000 or 6/6R while being edited from a Stereoping Synth Programmer. The M1000 manual calls this GROUP mode, every second incoming note is passed to another Matrix connected to the first one's MIDI OUT. Unfortunately the 1st matrix destroys parameter change SysEx on the way, making the 2nd one not editable anymore. Apart from the fact the Matrix 6/6R does not offer a group mode at all.

Now the PolyChainer overcomes these problems, it builds up it's own GROUP mode not using the M1000's built in. This allows editing of both connected Matrix (even M6), switching between LAYER mode for stacking programs or CHAIN mode for double polyphony. A 2nd switch determines to which MIDI OUT the parameter edits are going to be sent - while leaving the note's paths untouched. Sounds complicated, right? This video demoes several situations like editing from the Programmer with 1 and 2 Matrix, without and (of course) with PolyChainer in LAYER and CHAIN mode, editing one or the other Matrix or both. If you have no clue what this is all about this is perfctly ok. It simply means you do NOT need this product. I hope you like the video nevertheless, at least you'll hear some nice Matrix sounds including the "Stereo/detuning trick". The two Matrix are hard paned to left and right - largest happiness level is reached by using headphones.

Ratcheteer - Semi-Automatic MIDI Pattern Generator

midierror

"The Ratcheteer is a semi-automatic MIDI pattern generator for performing instead of programming notes. https://gumroad.com/l/ratcheteer

The RATCHETEER is designed to generate hi-hat - or any MIDI note - patterns easily, saving you the time consuming task of making repetitive MIDI edits! It works in sync with Ableton Live's transport with options for numerous time divisions and the ability to be performed using external MIDI controllers. Hurrah!

Assign a MIDI Note to ratchet, set the velocity and choose from 5 types of time division to hear the note re-triggered from a steady pace to rapid fire mayhem. Select from all time divisions combined, triplets, whole notes, dotted notes and free (unclocked).

Turn the knob to make the ratchet faster or slower and set it to 0 to stop all notes. The device will output your MIDI notes which can be recorded as clips and stored in your track.

Use the MIDI Map function to change the ratchet using MIDI controller movements, from knobs, faders, mod wheels or pitchbend. You can also automate it in the track, but why the heck would you do that?!

Send ratcheted MIDI notes to VSTs, Drum Racks or external MIDI Hardware using Ableton's extensive MIDI routings. Say goodbye to meticulous MIDI finessing and start performing hi-octane hi-hat patterns!

This is Version 1.0 and I am going to implement speed changes from MIDI notes, as requested by some users.

Please Note: Ableton Live 10 Suite is required to run this device.

I cannot offer refunds on software downloads, so please ask any questions you have before buying."

PREVIEW: Timetosser - restructure patterns live! (kickstarter)

Dave Mech

"Here's the kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

I only had the time to play with it for a few hours because it's one of the few prototypes currently available, but I already had a lot of fun using it. I would love to experiment more with it in my liveset. Trying different things like using it on a synth track only to restructure melodies from an arpeggiator for instance.
Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with this project. It's a local project from Utrecht that I want to support and I think is a cool idea. It would be great to have around as an additional performance tool. :)"
