Modern Sounds Pluto - Ambient Soundscapes

video uploads by The Pedalboard Orchestra

"A collection of long ambient tracks based on the Modern Sounds Pluto Semimodular Synthesizer and various effets pedal setups."

Playlist:

1. Modern Sounds Pluto Synthesizer – Ambient Demo & Sound Exploration
These are my first "ten minutes" (okay, the video turned out a few minutes longer πŸ˜‰) with the Modern Sounds Pluto semimodular synthesizer.
🎧Headphones recommended for the full sonic experience.

In this small setup Pluto is accompanied by three pedals, the Strymon El Capistan v1, the Chase Bliss/Goodhertz Lossy and the Eventide Space in ModEchoVerb algorithm, all in stereo.
Pluto, this tiny little box, is such a fascinating and inspiring instrument. You can get a million and more of sounds out of it.
I love how the filter of Lossy changes the overall mood of the sounds.

All sounds and video footage by The Pedalboard Orchestra.

Pluto's Moons (Album) by The Pedalboard Orchestra

Also see The Pedalboard Orchestra's demos of Modern Sounds Pluto Semimodular Synthesizer

"This album presents ten extended ambient soundscapes (approx. 150 minutes total), composed and recorded using the Modern Sounds Pluto semimodular synthesizer as the sole sound source. Pluto’s architecture—featuring five primary modulation engines named after Pluto’s moons (Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos and Hydra)—served as both a structural and conceptual framework during production.
Each track explores different interactions between these modulators, ranging from FM-based timbral shifts to complex CV-driven rhythmic deviations and slow-evolving modulation cycles.

Across the sessions, the wider effects chain underwent several iterations, incorporating various pedals for filtering, spatial processing, and granular-style textural shaping. However, two components remained consistent throughout:

Modern Sounds Pluto (core synthesis + modulation)

Eventide Space (primary reverb stage, used for long-tail ambient diffusion, shimmer variants, and modulated plate algorithms)

All material was captured as real-time, single-track, one-take recordings, with no overdubs or post-layering. Performance control relied heavily on Pluto’s internal modulation matrix, manual parameter riding, and dynamic interaction between the... more

Many thanks to the brilliant creators of synthesizers and effects pedals -
especially the teams at Modern Sounds, Chase Bliss, Old Blood Noise Endeavors, and Eventide Audio.
Without their innovations, this album would not have been possible.

Deep Analog Ambient Drone – Moog Mavis Soundscape (19 Minutes)

video upload by The Pedalboard Orchestra

"This calm and meditative ambient track is my first use of the Moog Mavis semimodular analog synthesizer.

This video is intended for deep listening and quiet immersion.
🎧 Headphones recommended for the full spatial experience.

The Mavis VCO plays itself as a drone, modified via the Mavis patch bay with LFO and Sample & Hold. Further modulation is provided by the Recovery Effects XCV pedal.
The Dark Star Pad Reverb from Old Blood Noise Endeavors calms it down even more,
before the sound is mangled by Hologram Electronics Microcosm in various stereo settings of the Warp algorithm.
The whole thing is pushed out in space by the Source Audio Ventris Dual Reverb, using the E-Dome and Offspring algorithm in parallel.
Patch cables: myVolts Halo.

Single take/single track recording, no overdubs.
Video footage and all sounds & noises by The Pedalboard Orchestra.

Realm of Light — Berlin School Ambient Journey (Typhon Synth, 25 min)

video upload by The Pedalboard Orchestra

"A 25-minute Berlin School–inspired ambient journey built around a sequenced analog synthesizer and evolving modulation.

Driven by the Dreadbox Typhon, the sound slowly unfolds through filter movement, envelopes, and layered effects processing—creating a deep, immersive soundscape that rewards focused listening.

A key element in shaping the modulation is the Chase Bliss Lossy, especially its filter, while additional textures and time-stretched layers are introduced using the Chase Bliss Mood Mk II (Slip Mode & Stretch Mode).

Signal Path:
Dreadbox Typhon → Chase Bliss Lossy (modulated via Moog Expression Pedal) → Old Blood Noise Endeavors Black Fountain Stereo → Chase Bliss Mood Mk II → Eventide Space

Melancholia — 6 BPM Ambient Meditation (Typhon + Parting)

video upload by The Pedalboard Orchestra

"Melancholia is a slow and meditative ambient journey built around an extremely reduced 6 BPM sequence. Subtle modulations, evolving textures and deep reverbs create a drifting, almost timeless atmosphere. Use headphones for full stereo immersion and take your time.

Created with the Dreadbox Typhon and a small chain of ambient effects.

Improvisation LXXVIII for Poly Evolver Keyboard

Published on Jul 2, 2017 Sacred Synthesis

Improvisation LXXIX for Poly Evolver Keyboard

Update: part LXXIX added above. From the same session as below (Improvisation LXXVIII for Poly Evolver Keyboard).

"The pipe organ is deservedly called the 'king of instruments'. I was a working Church organist for twenty years, and I treasure every minute of it. My main musical influence, then, is the magnificent tone of the king of instruments, with its principals, couplers, reeds, mixtures, and 32' posaune in the pedals. When I returned to synthesizer a number of years ago, the love for this sort of massive musical sound was simply transferred to another instrument; which I would call the 'queen of instruments'.

It would be an interesting study to explore the reasons behind a person's need to musically express themselves to such dramatic forms levels, but I'll leave that to the shrinks and my wife.

Regardless, I have found that Dave Smith's synthesizers provide a similar musical potency in their ability to create a large, full, and dignified tone that definitely resembles a pipe organ, or even an orchestra. This is the sound I'm always after when I improvise or compose.

This piece of music is Evolver from top to bottom. A four-voice Poly Evolver Keyboard provides a reed-type sound for an occasional soft but bright melody. A second eight-voice Poly Evolver Keyboard offers the main patch with an envelope modulated filter and a slow VCA attack. The modulation wheel is set to open the cut off frequency, which reaches such a level at the top as to make it sound like a bright string patch, but it's far more. This provides for the fuller dynamics, which are further supported by an equally full bass pedal setting on the Evolver Desktop. As I play, the pedal programs have to be adjusted to suit the musical moment. In this piece, I used three different bass programs.

Why am I making one Evolver recording after another, and what happened to the Prophet '08's? Since all the excitement these days is over the just released DSI Prophet Rev2, I thought I'd back away and focus instead on the now forgotten Evolvers. They, too, are magnificent musical instruments. When the commercial hype settles down, then I'll return to the other instruments.

Instrumentation:
DSI Poly Evolver Keyboard
DSI Poly Evolver Rack
DSI Evolver Desktop
Hammond XPK 200L Pedalboard

Effects:
Lexicon MX300

Performed live and recorded directly to a Tascam CD-RW900 Mk II.
