Happy Cinco De Wiardo?

This one popped up on the Wiard list via doc.

"Hi All

if nobody else is gonna mention it... i will...

By his account....
On 5 May 1999 a guy in Milwaukee decided that he'd pick up where his mentors left off in Analog synthesizer design, and he began operations as the "Wiard Synthesizer Company"
That was a full decade ago!
It seems like yesterday that i was on his porch with my trade-in Aries wonder why a fellow would wear a fez like that so early on a Saturday morning. i left with a 'the filter', a sequantizer, and a silver paneled envelator in my backseat and a unquenchable hunger for more.
Happy Anniversary Wiard! and many happy returns
Viva los Wiardos!
-doc"

BTW, Happy Cinco De Mayo folks!

Update: Hey! Wait a second! I'm seeing the site up on Feb 06 of 1998 on the Web Archives. Oh well, leave it to the Wiardos. jk :) Anyone out their know the actual date and/or year Wiard formed?

Update via doc on the Wiard list: "Hi Matrix
Like most temporal milestones.
ie: the discovery of 'America', Groundhog's day, Christmas, & National Frozen Potato Week.
The 5 May anniversary of Wiard is more a matter of convention than documentary evidence.

My own journal records this on 19 Nov 1998:
"looks like some guy up in Milwaukee got to the moon first with voltage controlled filter mode without using a crossfader, chk it out"

So there must have been something on the air before May '99.

But Grant has always celebrated Cinco de Mayo as the day that Wiard "began operations".... usually with a BBQ. But then, folks in Milwaukee don't need much of an excuse to get outside for a little R&R in May because that's just about when the glaciers recede enough to find the grill again (and the lawnmower)

i'm pretty sure Mike Firman got the first production Wiard...if that's so.... Mike? when did Grant build that for ya? (or maybe it was a 'beta')

They still haven't decided when Easter is either!!!!
;'>

-doc"

May 5th must be when it all crystallized and there was not turning back. :)

WIARD ANALOG MODULAR SYNTHESIZER

images via this auction
"This system consists of a Woggle Bug Module, a Classic VCO Module, a Borg Filter Module and a Dual Envelator Module housed in a portable & storable wooden enclosure that has two power supplies which fit neatly into a door in the rear of the case (each power supply has a 6.5 foot cord). The front cover of the case was designed with extra space to store patch cords in, and for transporting the system with the synthesizer patched. The wooden enclosure and power supplies are unique & custom built by Grant Richter. This one-of-a-kind system was designed by Grant Richter to specifically supply a lifetime of endless sonic exploration in a self contained unit with a small footprint. The entire modular with cover attached measures a mere 12" x 13" x 14". The unfathomably deep architecture of the modules in this system, coupled with the very portable build of the system, place it in the ranks of legendary portable systems like the EMS Sythi and the Buchla Music box. This is the very unit displayed on the front page of the Wiard synthesizer website (it's the one in the wooden box, Grant added the handle on top after taking the picture). Richter had this to say about this system 'This is a custom system and I won't be making any more of them'.

*PLEASE NOTE* This system may consist of four modules, but the WIARD Synthesizer is NOT a "normal" modular synthesizer. It is much more powerful. The Woggle Bug module alone has the equivalent functionality of 18 electrical modules! Each Wiard module has the functionality of numerous modules, it would take a very large modular system to do what this very compact system is capable of and even then it probably wouldn't have the audiophile-type sound quality that these WIARD modules produce!

On top of all that, the WIARD system is a work of visual art. In an effort to encourage experimentation and exploration of this instrument, the visual elements of the WIARD synthesizer were created by a design team of professional artists and students who researched a visual appearance that is equally welcoming to all genders and ages. This is a highly uncommon musical instrument."
You can find more info on the individual modules on the Wiard website.

Wiard Experimental Track

You can find the track on Mark Griffiths Music

"I have now completed a short experimental piece “I had lost my friend (No way out)”. I was trying out Native Instrument’s Vokator vocoder and the Wiard modular. I decided to combine the exploration by switching the vocoder into classic mode and using the Wiard as the carrier. So everything here is either Wiard or voice, with minimum additional processing other than a little convolution reverb and a vintage Korg analogue delay (SD 400). The patching of the Wiard is basic, I didn’t worry about ensuring all the tunings were even remotely similar, just turned the knobs until the tone was right. I also dispensed with a keyboard, using the Wiard sequantizer to generate pitch information."

Be sure to check out the rest of Mark's blog for more.

Cwejman RES-4 demo

Cwejman RES-4 demo from hpsounds on Vimeo.

"Here is a short demo of the Cwejman RES-4 Quad VC Resonators module.

This patch involve 3 intermodulating oscillators (Wiard Oscillator in LFO mode, Wiard Anti-Oscillator as a modulator, Tiptop Audio Z3000 as a modulator), which are filtered by a Wiard Boogie filter, itself modulated by the Wiard Oscilator.

12 dB/oct output of the Boogie filter is connected to the Cwejman RES-4. The tip was to modulate two bands of the RES-4 by an envelope (Wiard Envelator), which is trigged by a pulse rhythm created with the Intellijel uStep (clock signal is provided by the End output of a Bananalogue Serge VCS).

EFX processing through a nice Eventide Eclipse patch ;-) which give a Steve ROACH's like sound IMO."

Modular Formats on Ebay Update & Send Your Auction Items In

See the Modular section on the right under MORE STUFF. Links now include Eurorack, Frac Rack, Modcan / Cynthia, Moog / Dotcom, Serge, Buchla, and Wiard. There are RSS feeds for each so you can sub to them if you want to get notified when new items go up. Note each query has it's own little quirks to filter the garbage out. Modcan / Cynthia is based on the query term Modcan as adding the term Cynthia brings up way too many non-synth items to filter out otherwise. If you are listing an item in this format, make sure it contains Modcan. As for Wiard, you'll notice it does not include Malekko Eurorack. For that see Eurorack. Wiard, Buchla and Serge include the term modular. If I don't include it a ton of non related items come up. Unfortunately these two Wiard modules do not show up in my query because they do not include the term modular. The only way I was able to filter the rest out was by adding Buchla to the query, but it doesn't make sense to require Buchla for all Wiard listings.

Anyway, if you want to be listed, be sure you to include the key terms and not the terms I filter out, and of course feel free to send your items in for a post. Just send the auction number in and I'll put it up here or on MATRIXSYNTH-B depending on the quality of the pics, rarity of the item, and/or interesting bits of history. Note this applies to everything synth, not just modular formats of course.

This should give you an idea of how it can be a little tricky to find items on Ebay. If you are looking for particular brands of synths like Moog, or anything in particular, but want to filter out all the garbage, start with the Synths on Ebay US and Synths on Ebay UK links. Bring them up and then just add the term you want to narrow things by to the query. You should get much better results than just a blanket search on Moog. Try it to see what I'm talking about.

Those interested in auction posts can follow them @matrixsynthb - all auction posts here and on MATRIXSYNTH-B get tweeted there.

And that is pretty much it at this point. As for other available modular formats, see this post. I may refine the queries in time and/or add more. If you'd like to see anything else, just email me. And remember, if you are listing an item on Ebay, send the auction number in! Note the one rule I do have is it has to be synth related and I only post a given pic once if I can help it, so once you send an item in, that's it. If you re-list and item, I'll need new pics for a new post.

Wiard 1200 Series Borg Voltage Controlled Filter

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the seller: "This is a Wiard 1200 Series Borg filter with blue anodized faceplate. I am the original owner. I am selling off some modular gear as my "work" takes me in a different direction.
If you are familiar with Wiard gear you know all about this: The Borg Filter uses a completly new filter design using “Vactrol”-based electronics. Where did the Borg name come from? Buchla Model 292 Low-pass Gate + KORG MS-20 High and Low-Pass Filters.

Wiard 1200 series modules were designed for the Frac-Rack (Paia, Blacet) rack system. This module requires +/-15vdc power.

Module works great though there is some "rack rash" around the mounting holes, a slight scratch on the faceplate, and a slight imperfection of the anodizing around the engraved "Wiard" logo at bottom of module (see photos)"

Wiard Borg Filter 300

via this auction.

Details (note the misprint):

"One thing that makes this one real cool is it is miss marked "GR-342" it is SUPPOSED to say GR-352. Grant said it was one of the first few built. Taken from Wiard website: The newest module in the Wiard system is the Borg Filter . The Borg uses a completly new filter design using “Vactrol”-based electronics. There are two seperate filters in this module -- each implemented as a 2-pole multi-mode. They can be linked as a 4-pole, or used as two independent filters. The Vactrol circuitry provides a certain amount of slew, giving the filter a very woody and warm tone. The Borg also contains two LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators). Low frequency might be a misnomer, since the oscillators will track to a 15 Khz audio rate. These two oscillators can be used for filter modulation, or for clocking of a Sequantizer, vibrato on a Classic VCO and wave sequencing of a Waveform City. This is another example of the excellent design work done by Grant and the Wiard team. Where did the Borg name come from? + Buchla Model 292 Low-pass Gate Korg MS-20 High and Low-Pass Filters The Borg Filter module contains: Two seperate Borg filter (Controls - Freq, Peak, Type, Mod) Two low frequency oscillators (Controls - Speed) A jack multiple"

Evenfall Mini Modular Designed by Grant Richter of Wiard

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

via this auction

"I guess 50 (60?) of these were produced, either as kits or assembled products. I bought this to complete my own rack full of Grant Richter modules. It was a largely an impulse buy fueled by the tingly feelings my Wiard 300 modules give me. Make no mistake--this is NOT a Wiard module nor does it sound like one. It is not nearly as awe-inspiring overall, though it does have a few tricks that make it worth exploring. Definitely a cool piece of synthesizer history.

I found this to be, overall, one of those "sweet spot" machines, where nuanced wiggling can give you some really unique and impressive sounds. This is particularly true with the bandpass filter, which really sounds like Satan yelling about the weather while contending with a head cold. Very cool.

There are a few peculiar aspects to this, such as the weird gain staging. Any setting after 12 o'clock in the VCA will saturate/distort. Maybe you like this. I don't care for it personally. That's just the way these things work, as confirmed by several other owners, as well as Cary Grace, who currently builds all modules under the Wiard name, and who tours with an Evenfall Mini Modular (largely because it's small and light, I guess). This is a very lightweight synthesizer.

The pots are all mini pots, like attenuator pots on lots of modern Eurorack modules. I'm a bit of an oaf for these, but they're not difficult to work with.

I have not opened it to check internals or perform any mods. I'm not sure whether there are schematics floating around, but if you choose to go that route I'm sure you're an intrepid enough lad or lass to chase them down.

Cosmetically, there is some damage on the lower right edge of the panel; I have straightened this to the best of my ability.

Their words (copy/pasted info from around the web):
The Evenfall Mini Modular Synthesizer is a rack mountable semi-modular analog synthesizer featuring the warm, organic sound of real analog circuitry and the flexibility of individual control knobs and a patch cord interface.
The Mini Modular also features internally "pre patched" or "normalized" connections among the modules. These connections make the Mini Modular a capable synthesizer even without inserting patch cords. These internal connections can be overridden by inserting 3.5mm patch cables as desired.
The Mini Modular can be patched to make sound by itself or in conjunction with another voltage-controlled synthesizer. It can also be controlled from a MIDI controller via the built-in MIDI to CV interface which provides pitch, velocity, gate, pitch bend, portamento on/off, and modulation output voltages.

-
This synth was designed by Grant Richter of Wiard synthesizers and there were roughly 60 sold, 30 in kit form and 30 assembled. The previous owner told me this is a factory-assembled unit.

Grant wrote this on the old Wiard Yahoo list:

"That is a great little instrument.

It was originally slated to be the Wiard Model 3600, but I decided to pass on it because we could not find knobs to fit the little nubby pot shafts. They are just like TR-808 tuning pots. I feared the lack of knobs would limits sales too much.

Gary Chang and Neil Leonard Illuminate Sacred Spaces in Italy

Via the Grant Richter of Wiard on the Wiard Group:

"During the month of June, 2007, notable composers Gary Chang and Neil Leonard will visit several sites in Italy with the task of completing 5.1 installations of a program of music entitled "Sanctuaries," which are meditative ambient analog electronic music pieces composed by Chang and realized on a Wiard Modular Music System, specifically designed for playback in churches and other public locations.

The tour is sponsored by Sguardi Sonori 2007, Festival of Media and Time Based Art, for which Leonard is a also a curator.

The cities in the tour will include Rome, Benevento, Torino, Venice, San Galgano and La Spezia. While in La Spezia, Chang and Leonard will also have access to the Naval base, where there are very large rooms (indoor drydocks for warships, for instance) and other interesting ambiances, such as marble quarries and museums, where further explorations in unusual ambient spaces will be recorded and cataloged.

Utilizing Blue Sky Monitors and extensive Taralabs wiring at each installation, each
location will be recorded using a Soundfield SP422B mic, which is a recording system that can yield from mono up to a 7.1 playback. Recording will be achieved using a tcelectronic Konnekt Live, interfacing to a laptop computer and portable firewire drives. In addition, Impulse Response data will be collected from each of the locations to create a library of interesting convolution reverb spaces for McDSP's Revolver.

Following the Italian journey, Chang and Leonard will give many presentations on the
project, including a workshop presented by GASP Gallery in Brookline for senior students in electronic music at Berklee College of Music.

This project would not be possible without the generosity of sponsors, who include The City of Rome; The City of Venice; La Marrana - environmental art park, (for graciously coordinating recording and installation sites during a week long residency in La Spezia); Sguardi Sonori 2007, Festival of Media and Time Based Art; Blue Sky Speakers; TaraLabs Cables; tcelectronic digital audio interfaces and processors; The Wiard Synthesizer Company; Transaudio Group/Soundfield Microphones and The Berklee College of Music.

Confirmed Schedule - (Actual locations to be announced).

June 12/19 LA SPEZIA
June 20 ROME
June 21/22 BENEVENTO
June 23/24 TORINO
June 26/27 VENICE
June 28 SAN GALGANO (Installation includes "Echoes and Footsteps" by Neil Leonard in addition to "Sanctuaries")
June 29 - July 4 LA SPEZIA

SANCTUARIES
An installation by Gary Chang and Neil Leonard
San Galgano, Sienna, Italy

NOTES: GARY CHANG
The music entitled "Sanctuaries" that I have composed for installation in churches is designed for such an environment of spirituality and meditation. The musics are ambient in quality, designed to fill the space with warmth and emotion, but never does the musics every confront the visitor - though there is some abstraction, the dynamics of the pieces are quite controlled, never overtly dramatic. In the best of all things, I am hoping that the music installation will simply be another contributor to the specialness of the Church's ambiance - my special prayer in the space. In loving memory of Diana Lee Chang.

NOTES: NEIL LEONARD
Echoes and Footsteps is a reflection on the sound of Italy, where I lived and work for much of 2006. The primary sources are the sound of cowbells recorded in the region of Lazio, and the songs of workers celebrating the end of the work day in the Palazzo di Ragione market in Padova. The pointed gestures of the bells and bursts of cathartic song were transformed using time-stretching and delay techniques. The resulting composition evolves in slow motion and outlines large sonic contours that celebrate the essence of daily life as I head it while living here.

GARY CHANG SHORT BIO
Sound artist and esteemed film composer Gary Chang worked his way up through the LA
studio musician ranks playing with the best musicians in the country (e.g. Robbie Robertson, Herbie Hancock and Weather Report, Barbara Streisand and Henry Mancini,)
later to compose music for many eminent filmmakers (including John Frankenheimer,
Jonathan Demme and Stephen King). Few composers have mastered such a wide range of
musical genres that Chang has (orchestral, electronic, installation, jazz, soundtrack, dance). Chang is a protagonist in the field of music synthesis. He has recorded on and programmed almost major every hardware and software synthesizer over the last thirty years, built dozens of custom systems, and designed a personal studio that is optimized for recording synthesizers in multi-channel and high definition audio. Chang won the National Endowment for the Arts Grant for Jazz Composers while attending California Institute Of the Arts. Chang is a pioneer in the use of 5.1 surround sound in cinema, concert and installation settings.

NEIL LEONARD SHORT BIO
NEIL LEONARD is a sound artist, composer and saxophonist. His compositions are a
synthesis of concert, improvised and electronic musics that transcend categorization. Leonard's recently premiered works include Dreaming of an Island for orchestra, electronics and live-video (performed by Kirk Trevor and the Indianapolis Chamber
Orchestra), Totems (performed by Byron and Caine at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City), and the music for Relatives (by Tony Oursler and Constance DeJong that was featured at the Whitney Biennial). His collaborative work with visual artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons was featured by premier venues for modern art including 49th Venice Biennial; Museum of Modern Art, NY; and presented by the U.S. State Department at DakArt/Dakar Biennial in Senegal.

Leonard is co-owner of Gallery Artist Studio Project GASP and curator of the GASP sonic arts series in Boston. His ensemble has featured Marshall Allen (Director of the Sun Ra Arkestra), Bruce Barth, Dave Bryant, Don Byron, Kenwood Dennard, Robin Eubanks, Frank Lacy, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and Uri Caine.

Neil Leonard is an Associate Professor in the Music Synthesis Department at Berklee
College of Music.
