Atari Punk Console... gone wrong

flickr by The Bottomless Paddling Pool
(click for mouse overs)
"I'm taking a paper in the first semester coming up on making your own synth from scratch and I thought that I'd better polish up on my electrical knowledge as it's been a while since I've done anything that needed any real effort. As I've never made an audio circuit before I thought I should start simple and progress to the harder stuff. So I decided to start on the popular and simple Atari Punk Console (APC). Anyway, I made it and I was getting sounds from it, but nothing like what I should have been getting. The sounds I was getting sucked, mainly just static mooshed up with high pitched whines. It was bad for the ears, especially as I had the volume up and my headphones on! I eventually found out what was haywire, the chip I was running it off was wrong, as in one letter different in the code from the proper chip. Not a big problem, frustrating at most. I'll make the APC soon and put it in a nice case. I have the neck of a violin that it'll look cool in. The body I'm saving for a bigger project, perhaps a Weird Sound Generator.

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent 'NOTHINGSTAR' synthesizer

via this auction

"Fitted with pitch control, distortion, M-Z3R0 death industrial delay circuit with filter, rate and feedback controls, pitch LFO with rate and depth control and atari punk console square wave oscillator.

Modified to the extreme, this beast can kick out an unlimited amount of glitching, noise and mayhem.

it has loads of internal sounds which can be mashed up with the embedded circuitry i've added as well as merged with the APC square wave for dual oscillator tones.

I've used one of these for some time to create hundreds of drum samples and bizarre incidental sounds.

This is a machine you'll have a lot of time for whenever you require something a bit crazy to drop into your tracks. You could pull off an entire power electronics set using this machine alone.

Don't be fooled by it's cute appearance. Make no mistake, these things are beasts :)"

"Quick demo of another modded lo-fi machine. Delay with feedback, rate and feedback filter, LFO, atari punk console square wave oscillator, extreme pitch and distortion.

Massive source of weird and nasty samples and a cool bit of kit for live noise sets and power electronics based projects.

If you're on facebook and vaguely interested in any of this. Look up manufactured-Z3R0 for updates on what's under construction, being messed with and researched and what's up for sale."

"Gearwire's own Gretchen Hasse doesn't often venture in front of the Camera, but she's been so enamored of the GetLoFi Atari Punk Console 2.0 noise-box that she just had to share its baleful bleating with the world. Did I mention she's been sharing it with the office for the past two weeks? MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!

via synthgeek, where you'll find some audio.

"I'm building a variation on the Atari Punk Console housed in a nifty-shaped cardboard box I call the Mimsy Modular. There's a development journal of sorts with pictures & some audio on my blog: http://blog.skincontact.com/ - I'm still planning on adding to it, but it's finished enough to be a fun toy."

X1L3 (M-Z3R0) - circuit bent - synth mod - Yamaha Pss30

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction
videos at the auction and previously posted here and here.

"FORMERLY KNOWN AS M-Z3R0 I DECIDED TO CHANGE THE NAME TO X1L3.  PARTLY BECAUSE I WAS SICK OF MY NAME LOOKING LIKE A PARODY OF S-CAT, PARTLY BECAUSE I WANTED A NEW NAME TO REFLECT THE NEW DIRECTION I'VE TAKEN AND PARTLY BECAUSE I THINK X1L3 LOOKS BETTER :-)

LISTED HERE IS THE LAST OF THE TWO FINAL MACHINES I MADE UNDER THE NAME OF M-Z3R0 I BUILT TWO OF THESE JUST BEFORE I VANISHED FOR A WHILE. ONE OF THEM HAS MADE IT'S WAY TO CANADA AND HERE IS THE SECOND ONE.

MY PSS30'S ARE USED BY THE BANDS IN DEATH IT ENDS AND MECHANICAL CABARET. I'VE SOLD A LOT OF THESE ALONG WITH NUMEROUS CASIO SA'S MODIFIED TO THE SAME SPEC. I'VE RECIEVED A LOT OF GOOD FEEDBACK ABOUT THEM ESPECIALLY FROM IN DEATH IT ENDS WHO HAVE USED IT ALL OVER THEIR LATEST ALBUM.

MODIFICATIONS:

***DIGITAL DELAY***
RATE
FEEDBACK
NOISE FILTER
DELAY OFF/ON

***SYNTHACON RESONANT HIGH/LOW PASS FILTER***
RESONANCE
CUTOFF
GAIN
THIS IS A TRUE RESONANT FILTER BASED ON THE STEINER SYNTHACON AND NOT A SIMPLE CIRCUIT BOARD MOD
BEING DESCRIBED AS A FILTER.

***MULTI MODE MODULATION GENERATOR***
RATE
DEPTH/PHASE
MODE (SINE / SAW / SQUARE)
THE MODULATION GENERATOR IS ROUTED TO THE KEYBOARD PITCH AND FILTER CUTOFF

***ATARI PUNK CONSOLE***
OSC1
OSC2
OFF/ON
LAYERS UP NICELY WITH SOUND SOURCES INTO THE EXTERNAL INPUT AND THE KEYBOARD.

***3 CHANNEL MIXER***
KEYBOARD LEVEL
ATARI PUNK CONSOLE LEVEL
EXTERNAL INPUT LEVEL

THE SYNTH IS FITTED WITH AN EXTERNAL INPUT THAT YOU CAN FEED ANYTHING INTO MAKING IT AN OPEN ENDED
BEAST FOR SOUND MANIPULATION.

A TINY LITTLE SYNTH WITH A HUGE SOUND. QUITE SWEET IN IT'S LITTLE WAY AND CAPABLE OF BEING BOTH NICE AND NASTY TO WHATEVER DEGREE YOU WANT TO PUSH IT. IF YOU'RE AFTER SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT WITHOUT HAVING TO RUN AN ANALOGUE SYNTH THROUGH A CHAIN OF FX PEDALS THEN YOU'LL ENJOY THIS MACHINE. IT HOLDS IT'S OWN AS A BASIC RETRO ANALOGUE SYNTH WITH IT'S NICE ANALOGUE FILTER AND TAKES IT ALL TO A DIFFERENT LEVEL. FOR FILM SCORE WORK, WITCH HOUSE, POWER ELECTRONICS AND INDUSTRIAL NOISE THIS MACHINE IS A KILLER."

Scotch Box Synthesizer

Published on Jul 22, 2013

An APC on steroids. It get's a little interesting at :33.

"Here are the 'special effects' on my Scotch Box Synthesizer.
Demonstrated first is the capacitor; where one button produces sounds from it draining and the other from it charging. Then is the 'Special effects Generator' which produces a rhythmic effect. Then the 'Stepped Tone Generator' or 'Atari Punk Console' which creates arpeggios from the input tone. Give it a high note and you'll get lots of results. Give it a low note and you'll just get one or two. Last up is a riff based on a combination of the capacitor and 'Atari Punk Console.' The riff is a happy accident I created late one night; and I hope many more happy accidents are waiting.
Every circuit on this contraption is based on designs by Forest Mims III, who writes books for beginning electronic enthusiasts. Check out his Wikipedia entry, you'll be amazed."

X1L3 - circuit bent - ELC keyboard - '3LC-DR0N3'

Published on Jul 22, 2013 manufacturedZ3R0·99 videos

"Circuit bent with a pitch mod. Then fitted with atari punk console and a delay pcb.

Impressive little machine for death industrial/power electronics harsh noise and drone. Pretty cool for broken up glitched fx with the dealy rate turned way down. It can come off quite musical in a lofi way too. It leans more towards encouragement for experimentation with the delay than anything else though.

Much the same as the elc's i bent as M-Z3R0 except i've used the casing as the housing for the controls rather than the speaker panel and it now has the atari punk console added as an extra oscillator/noise source for the delay looping."
