Dr. Blankenstein's "Boom-A-Ring" The Electronic Didgeridoo of the Future !

"This one doesn't need too much explaining, the title really says it all. It's an electronic didgeridoo with the illumiringer effect built into it. There is only one in the world, some will say that's a good time... some might not. You can expect nothing less from a one of a kind prototype. Since I am one of the world's worst didgeridoo players, I thought it best to let her go. I am sure there is someone out there that is a great player and deserves to own this sucker more than myself. Before doing so, I wanted to make a proper video of it (I don;t think I'll be making anymore anytime soon. This one was built years ago). The video is longer than I would have liked it to be, but I had a lot of ground to cover. Feel free to skip to the middle when the real demo action starts."

"ATARI PUNK CONSOLE DELUXE V2.0
with 2 Movement / Light Sensors, 6 Body Contacts,
Special Diode Circuit, Stutter Switch & CV INPUT !

LAST BATCH EVER!
(3 left till they are all gone!)

"DESCRIPTION: All great things must come to an end. This is 1 of the last 3 Dr. Blankenstein APC's that will ever be made... period. Last batch, it's time to move on to other wonderful projects. After 3 Years, 300 pieces (one of which went to the great Forrest Mims himself)... what else can really be done? :)
If you don't know, you are looking at a Dr. Blankenstein's Limited Edition Atari Punk Console Deluxe v2.0. Pretty much a super Atari stylized APC with a TON of tricked out features. There are two photo Theremin style motion / light sensors to control the sound, as well as a control switches to use a classic APC knob setup. Each light sensor can be turned on and off independently.

To add even more weird control to this sucker I have added SIX BODY contacts that allow for some pretty cool sound manipulation (see video below). Two of the body contacts are running through a specially designed Diode circuit that you will ONLY find on Dr. Blankenstein's APC Deluxe V2.0.

There is also a 1/8" Control Voltage (C.V.) Input so that it can be sequenced with an analog sequencer / modular synth setup or even modulate the sound by connecting a piezo trigger to it... fun stuff! :)

Another exciting addition to version v2 is the On / Off Momentary switch on the top of the piece, this allows the player to rhythmically stutter in the sound in! Of course there is still the standard On / Off power switch by the Atari logo as well. The side knob controls the master volume, and their is a 1/4" output jack on the back of the unit.

All in all... this is one of the nicest built, most feature stocked, MOST PLAYABLE VERSION OF THE ATARI PUNK CONSOLE out there today. But don't take my word for it... take a look at the demo video below. Point is, this is NOT your grandmothers APC! :)

FEATURES:

- 1 OF THE LAST 3 EVER MADE!
- 2 Motion / Light Sensitive Theremin like top mounted sensors
- 2 Light sensor On / Off Switches
- 2 Square Wave Synth Control Knobs
- Momentary Stutter ON/OFF switch
- Standard ON/OFF switch

- 1/4" Mono Output Jack

Dr. Blankenstein Workshops Coming to Maker Faire Detroit 2016

via @Dr_Blankenstein

"A shout out to #upcycling genius @TimSway in @TheHenryFord museum interview"

You'll find the interview here along with details on the event.

"At Maker Faire Detroit 2016, Drew Blanke—more formally known as “Dr. Blankenstein”—will arrive, trailing a rolling suitcase full of broken toys and noise-making creations along behind him. Over the weekend of July 30-31, 2016, Blanke will hold workshops to teach people how to “up-cycle electronics into one-of-a-kind 21st century art.” He asks that guests interested in participating in the workshop bring along broken electronics from home—to “open them, inspect them, and learn from them.” He will also have a few of his own creations available for hands-on demonstrations."

"A Conversation w/ Herb Deutsch - Dr Blankenstein Interviews Herb Deutsch @ The Queens Museum, New York on September 27th, 2014.

This is a 25 minutes chunk of what was a 1 hour and 30 minute interview with Moog synthesizer's musical genius, life long educator.... Herbert Deutsch. The conversation was moderated by myself, Drew Blanke (Dr. Blankenstein). Here is the original promotional link: http://www.queensmuseum.org/events/a-...

I am sorry in advance for the fact that the video cuts short so quickly. There was no one manning the camera and we assumed it would record a file longer than 30 minutes (THANKS SONY BLOGGIE!!!). We were sadly wrong. That being said, the first 1/3 of the interview gave some really new and exciting incite into the wonderful mind of Mr. Herbert Deutsch. We cover what got him into music, when he first started making stuff, and of course.. when he met Dr. Robert Moog.

It was amazing to have Herb come to the Queens Museum in Corona, Queens (a place he had mentioned has some very deep history with him, the forming location of the 64' NY World's Fair) and meet my circuitry class / see their wonderful circuitry projects. Thanks Herb! :)"

Dr Blankenstein (Drew Blanke) builds his Atari Punk Consoles (3 Year Anniversary Video!)

I can not tell you how excited I am to finally put this video up, or should I say... A video like this (a fast motion build video). I am equally excited that today (meaning 12/13/2015 at the time of this video) is the 3RD YEAR ANNIVERSARY of my version of the ATARI PUNK CONSOLE! Here is the original video if you haven't seen it: https://youtu.be/v-VsaC33edU Since uploading that video I have sold HUNDREDS of units to countless talented musicians and art collectors from all over the globe. This video is a kinda thank to all those people, giving you a FAST GLIMPSE of all the work that went into your little video game sounding drone synth. When people say "hand made synth"... they usually don't get much more hand made than what you see here. I am excited to share that experience with all of you. I really do hope you enjoy.

So how the video goes is... I was building a batch of 6 APC 2600's when a ton of holiday order rolled in at once. So, I needed to start to finish a few of them off one by one. So, I only really finish ONE Atari Punk Console... BUT, you are really watching me prepare a batch of six of them. Sorry about all the weird lighting and camera angles, I still haven't gotten the perfect camera for these sorts of shoots and my space is limited for lighting and tripods... so it is what it is. :)

I obviously was shooting for a video in the style of the great TIM SWAY: https://www.youtube.com/user/timsway or say the amazing Jimmy Diresta: https://www.youtube.com/user/jimmydir... (sorry for goofing on your name btw, I was totally just playing dumb:).

Well I guess that's it for now... here's to another year of making crazy sounds together. Thanks for all who have grabbed an APC 2600 from me over the years, and for those of you who haven't... well... I hope to speak to you soon. Be well, have a happy and healthy holiday season.

If you enjoyed this video... please pass it on. If you want to see more like it... please SUBSCRIBE NOW :) Thanks again!

Stereo ILLUMIRINGER given to Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock - Beastie Boys)

"I just had to do it, how many chances does a man get to see Cheech & Chong "Up in Smoke" with Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys? The answer.... is one chance.

I bought my tickets to the movie, and immediately started thinking of what I might give to the King Ad-Rock if I was able to catch up with him for a few. A ran through a bunch of ideas, none of which seemed right for him. I wanted the piece to really be a custom number, one that not only looked Beastie, but would be useful to one.

Eventually it hit me, how about a Stereo R.C.A. version of the illumiringer effect. This way it could easily be used with turntables or an MPC sampler (two things Adam Horovitz is no stranger to). I like the idea of the effect being stereo, this will allow Adam to turn on one channel (left or right) of the effect or both. That way the end result of a beat / record would be a combination of both, giving the final sound some really cool texture.

Well, if you watched the video you see.. I was able to catch up with Adam after the movie and hand him off the piece. He was totally stoked, but probably not as much as I was. ha

Sadly the video is only a walk through of the features and graphics, I didn't have enough time to put together a good RCA setup to shoot a good demo. Hopefully we will see or hear some of it somewhere in Adam's future work. Either way, it was amazing to meet him.. what a totally down to earth cool guy. Not that I or anyone else would expect anything less. Adam had mentioned he had even given some circuit bending a shot in the past, and has a pile of baby toys left behind from his son he might want to have me crack open. It would of course be an honor, I look forward to it :) Again, thanks Adam... you rock!

PLEASE do not write me asking me to make an exact clone of this piece. This is a one of a kind made for Adam, I am happy to share it with you... but making loot off the the Beastie's name is not the game here. I just wanted to show some appreciation to an artist I really respect. I will certainly make other stereo Illumiringers, maybe even with R.C.A. inputs... I think it was a cool idea, just not the Beastie Boys one seen here. I am sure you understand :) Thanks all."

"'ILLUMIRINGER' Motion Controlled Ring Modulator Pre-Built Kit Add THEREMIN style controlled FX craziness to ANY AUDIO DEVICE!"

"FINALLY! For the first time ever... I am able to offer the ILLUMIRINGER - Motion Controlled Ring Modulator to everyone at an affordable price (I still haven't been able to work out the costs of the pedal).

What is an ILLUMIRINGER you ask? Check out THIS LINK for more information on how this circuit got started. This auction might even be cooler, why? This modification kit can be built into ANY DEVICE THAT PRODUCES AUDIO. Doesn't matter if it has an output jack (guitar, bass, keyboard) or if it has a speaker (iPod dock, guitar amplifier, baby toy etc) this sucker can be installed with only 6 SOLDER POINTS!

I have come up with a simple to follow diagram (shown below) to help illustrate how completely easy it is to install this thing.

To sum it up quickly (which isn't hard)...
STEP 1: You remove the two output wires of your device from the speaker or jack, you solder the output wires of the ILLUMIRINGER mod in their place.

STEP 2: You take the devices output wires you just removed and solder them to the input wires of the ILLUMIRINGER mod kit. We are almost done!

STEP 3: Next we drill holes in the device to mount the LED bezel, 3 selector switches, control knob and LDR Light Sensor and screw them into place.

STEP 4: Next we solder the last two remaining wires to the two leads of the LDR Light Sensor. DONE! Installed!

A Motion / Light controlled Theremin style instrument modification in less than an hours work. And btw... this thing is BEYOND COOL... nothing else like it out on the market.. and at this price you will want to install it into EVERY device in your studio you play out with.

FEATURES:
- 1st of it's kind modification kit!
- Adds a THEREMIN style MOTION CONTROLLED effect to ANY AUDIO DEVICE!
- Super SMALL circuit board (about 1.5" x 1.5") so it is easy to fit into ANY device
- Switch 1 Turns the Effects Circuit On / Off (this is done to save battery when not in use)
- Switch 2 is a Wet / Dry selector. Wet activates the Effect, Dry is the clean audio signal
- Switch 3 allows you select either Motion / Light control over the effect or Knob Control
- HUGE 12mm LDR Light Sensor to get MAXIMUM motion control
- Red professionally Bezel Mounted Power Indicator LED
- SIMPLE to install into ANY AUDIO DEVICE with a speaker or mono output jack!
- Device will work & sound EXACTLY as it did before the mod when FX are off (True Bypass)
- Minimal / Basic Soldering Skills needed (entire install can take less than an hour)
- 9V Battery Powered (EXTREMELY long battery life, circuit will run with less than 3V!)
- Professionally designed, built and tested before arriving to you
- ADDICTIVE TO PLAY WITH! Brings a completely new life to audio gear your are bored of!
- Adds ENDLESS now tone and performance possibilities to ANY AUDIO DEVICE!
- MEGA AFFORDABLE!!!!!!!!!!"

Dr Blankenstein's Circuit Bent "Pocket Calculator" Live Demo

In this video we see a live demo / rehearsal for the Drew Blanke (Dr Blankenstein) for his presentation for MAKE magazine at Moogfest 2014. The jam is based loosely around the Kraftwerk classic "Pocket Calculator" off their "Computer World" album. Keep in mind this is live, and unedited.... just a raw jam on 4 circuit bent pieces.

The pieces include a Mattel Bee-Gee's "Rhythm Machine" keyboard, Casio ML-831 Musical "Pocket Calculator", a built from the ground up custom Stylophone and a prototype for the APC2600 V2.6. All pieces have the ILLUMIRINGER device modification kit installed in them, although most of the demo is featuring the pocket calculator in ILLUMIRINGER mode. Only reverb has been added to the mix via the mixer. The beat was made on an Electribe ER-1 and sampled into a Boss loop pedal.

Sorry about the slightly out of tune Stylophone in the beginning, it's needs to be left on for a bit to warm up and get into tune (kinda like an old moog). Hey, that's rock n' roll. It's worked into the jam nicely... so why not let it roll.

Stay tuned for individual demos of each piece in this video coming at you THIS MONTH (I promise, I know we have been slacking on the videos:) Thanks for watching, please remember to SUBSCRIBE and follow the twitter link up top to stay up to date on the newest Dr. Blankenstein creations.

Dr. Blankenstein on eBay (RSS)

Video at the auction and posted here.

10 Step Analog Sequencer / Synth
Control SPEED, PITCH & FILTER with Knob / Motion / Touch Control !
Lock & Key and Momentary Stutter ON / OFF Switches w/
EXTRA LARGE 10MM AMBIENT COLOR CHANGING LEDS

DESCRIPTION: What we have here is a 10 step analog sequencer, running a square wave oscillator. Each step of the bass line can be tuned via the 10 main sequence knobs (further right you turn, higher the pitch for each note of the line). This unit is intended as a stand alone sound creation device, at has NO sync out or in... hence why it should be considered a "space line generator" ;) Oh, and for added fun.. there is an ILLUMIRINGER put on the end of the signal chain for epic tweaking! Quickly I will mention the EPIC graphics she's rocking... the main graphic is an original mash up focused around an amazing image of the cockpit of the Space Shuttle "Endeavour"... As you might have guessed.. this is where the piece gets it's name.

All of this is controlled via the 3 sections at the top of the unit... each section has the option to be either controlled via a knob, light sensor or pair of touch points (at the bottom of the unit.) First, we have the "SPEED" which will control the tempo of the sequence. Next, there is the "PITCH" controls.. and finally the "FILTER" which is tied into the effects section. The filter fx can be turned on and off via the switch to the left of the Knob / Sensor control switch on the right most control section.

The touch points are set up in pairs... from left to right... 1st Speed, 2nd Pitch, 3rd Voltage Drain, 4th Effect. They can be used in pairs OR in different configuration to get some really exciting expression out of the piece.

The light sensors on this thing are SICK! Massive range... super sensitive! So many way to jam on them... I couldn't include all of them in the video there were SO MANY... so use your imagination. I really enjoy turning ALL of them on at once and creating MASSIVE SONIC NOSE DIVES by simply slowly turning the piece towards and away from a light source.. an experience that can only be understand by trying it ;)

Unit can be turned on via a mission impossible style key start (two keys included).. or a big red momentary button. 9v Power adapter powered for maximum juice'ness (this thing is a bit of a beast) which is of course INCLUDED. This is a solid PCB design, not perf . vero board etc... meaning this sucker was BUILT TO LAST.

As of now this is the ONLY ONE IN EXISTENCE. As usual, depending on the reaction this time around.. maybe I will make a few more in the future.. but as you might have guessed... building this sucker is quite an ENDEAVOUR ;)

There is SO MUCH more I can say about this piece... but you should really just check out the DEMO VIDEO and throw down a bid before someone else snakes it! (joking, but for real.. BID NOW!) haha

___________________________________________________

Well folks, after almost a years worth of experimenting.... the moment we have all waited for has arrived! The first real demo of the ILLUMIRINGER concept pedal in action! As I am sure you have noticed by now, it's LONG! Please understand this has been a lot of work to get this pedal to where it is.. it's EXTREMELY VERSATILE.. and there is a lot to show. Also, once you get going on a Star Wars theme... it's hard to just leave it at that ;) That being said, feel free to use the shortcut links above to jump around to different parts of the video (highlighting different features of the pedal). BUT if you want to get the full idea of what this baby can do... I suggest giving it a full watch.

I would like to take a second to thank my Cousin Mikey who helped me put this demo together for all of you (I couldn't have done it without you bro)! AND of course.... Trey Anastasio for being such an amazing positive inspiration in my life for the past 20 years, for the revolutionary guitar style he has created for us all to enjoy... that in which was a HUGE inspiration to me for the ILLUMIRINGER concept as a whole (how's that for a thank you speech.. run-on sentence? lol). In short, thank you!

Things to keep in mind... this video was recorded on a Sony Bloggie, audio via it's on-board stereo mic. The guitar pedal is plugged DIRECTLY into a 24 year old bass amp... and the guitar directly into the pedal. NO OTHER EFFECTS ARE BEING USED. The use of delay, reverb and other rig effects would of course add new and different character... to the already elaborate sonic palette of the ILLUMIRINGER. BUT for a demo like this, best to keep things as clean as possible. I would go on about the details of the pedal, but I think that is made pretty clear by the 24 MINUTE video about it (ha) so I will just leave it at... enjoy the show...

and MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU..... always!

ILLUMIRINGER Circuit Bent Guitar Modification Installation Overview

I have been getting a bunch of emails from people out there who want to do the circuit bent guitar modification to their guitar, but want to know more about how it's done. SO... I made this video to help show everyone how SIMPLE it is to install. It's easy! Drill the holes for the off board wired components (switch, control knob etc). Remove the pre-existing guitar jack output wires (signal / ground). Solder the ILLUMIRINGER's input cables to the guitar output cable. Then solder the ILLUMIRINGER'S output cable to the guitar jack..... DONE!

If you have any questions about what I am talking about in the video, want to purchase a kit, or have me install one for you.... feel free to drop me a line.... and of course... as always.... please subscribe and leave comments if you like what you are seeing here and would like to see more.

"Zen Portal" by Dr Blankenstein - Circuit Bent Disney Baby Einstein Baby Toy

This little baby toy plays some really cool aquatic sounds... but it's ALL ABOUT the tranquil soothing music setting!

I have added two knobs to control the pitch which are wired in series. This allows for really low / high pitch tweaking.

There are also 4 touch points which will either add a warble to the sound, change the pitch or return it to it's natural pitch.

It can be played from it's internal speaker or from the added 1/4" mono input jack. The graphics on the back final by the fun house mirror were custom designed and added by me. There are also some custom graphics on the back where it used to say "Disney Baby Einstein". This is a numbered... one of a kind piece. :)

This synth / fx processor starts out rather simple with 3 animal noises (elephant call, monkey screams, and lion growl) you can play from the sound bank. Each sound is looped and can easily be played from the red momentary switches. The sounds can then be pitch shifted by using the control knob in the "Pitch Kontrol" section. Located next to the pitch knob is TWO body contacts, touch the first one and add a low frequency oscillation to the sound.... touch both and also control the pitch! You can get amazing dub siren noises, strange synth drones and even BASS LINES out of performing with just the sample loops.

Next we have probably the most exciting part of this piece... The "JAH EFFECTS" section. Click the effects processor on and suddenly an entirely new sonic palette is opened up for the sound banks samples. The effects filter can be controlled by clicking the control switch to "TURN" and using either the knob or set of body contacts to change the amount and pitch of the filter. Click the control switch to "WAVE" and you activate the motion / light sensor! You can then use your hand or a light source to change the fx filters depth / pitch.

It gets even better! Next to the "JAH EFFECTS" section we see the "FX Ins" inputs... here we can use the 1/8" input to connect audio devices such as iPhones, iPods and cell phones to the "Jah Effects"! There is also a 1/4" mono input for guitar, mic, keyboard or anything else you want to plug in. Anything you plug into these inputs will then be filtered by the Jah Effects! Again, use the knob, body contacts or MOTION to control the effect!

Sadly, this piece will probably be a one off. I could build another one if I had to, but I had no intention when starting this piece for it to turn out so crazy. That being said, A LOT of time went into this piece... I feel it's some of my best work to date. I am excited someone will be adding it to their custom setup! Make sure to check out the demo video below, I try to cover most of the features and sounds pretty thoroughly. A truly one of a kind piece, indeed.
