Sytem 100m with custom Steiner-Parker Synthacon VCF clone

YouTube via dracena — October 04, 2009 — "http://www.myspace.com/sarculator
--------------------------------
A demonstration of Steiner-Parker Synthacon VCF clone (Curetronic Steiner VCF) put in a custom made system 100m module enclosure. I named it "m-128".

All sounds in this demo (including drum and percussion sounds) were programmed on system 100m.
For the "self propelled" sound example in the second part of this video an additional LFO was trans-patched from Korg MS-20 to Sys-100m.

Modules in my system100m:
181 - 49key keyboard
112 - dual oscilator x 2 (that's 4 VCOs altogether)
121 - dual filter
130 - dual VCA
140 - dual envelope generator & LFO
150 - ring modulator, sample&hold, noise,LFO
128 - custom Steiner-Parker VCF clone (by Curetronic)
440 - custom SSM2040 VCF clone (by MOTM)

X1L3 (M-Z3R0) - circuit bent - synth mod - Yamaha Pss30

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction
videos at the auction and previously posted here and here.

"FORMERLY KNOWN AS M-Z3R0 I DECIDED TO CHANGE THE NAME TO X1L3.  PARTLY BECAUSE I WAS SICK OF MY NAME LOOKING LIKE A PARODY OF S-CAT, PARTLY BECAUSE I WANTED A NEW NAME TO REFLECT THE NEW DIRECTION I'VE TAKEN AND PARTLY BECAUSE I THINK X1L3 LOOKS BETTER :-)

LISTED HERE IS THE LAST OF THE TWO FINAL MACHINES I MADE UNDER THE NAME OF M-Z3R0 I BUILT TWO OF THESE JUST BEFORE I VANISHED FOR A WHILE. ONE OF THEM HAS MADE IT'S WAY TO CANADA AND HERE IS THE SECOND ONE.

MY PSS30'S ARE USED BY THE BANDS IN DEATH IT ENDS AND MECHANICAL CABARET. I'VE SOLD A LOT OF THESE ALONG WITH NUMEROUS CASIO SA'S MODIFIED TO THE SAME SPEC. I'VE RECIEVED A LOT OF GOOD FEEDBACK ABOUT THEM ESPECIALLY FROM IN DEATH IT ENDS WHO HAVE USED IT ALL OVER THEIR LATEST ALBUM.

MODIFICATIONS:

***DIGITAL DELAY***
RATE
FEEDBACK
NOISE FILTER
DELAY OFF/ON

***SYNTHACON RESONANT HIGH/LOW PASS FILTER***
RESONANCE
CUTOFF
GAIN
THIS IS A TRUE RESONANT FILTER BASED ON THE STEINER SYNTHACON AND NOT A SIMPLE CIRCUIT BOARD MOD
BEING DESCRIBED AS A FILTER.

***MULTI MODE MODULATION GENERATOR***
RATE
DEPTH/PHASE
MODE (SINE / SAW / SQUARE)
THE MODULATION GENERATOR IS ROUTED TO THE KEYBOARD PITCH AND FILTER CUTOFF

***ATARI PUNK CONSOLE***
OSC1
OSC2
OFF/ON
LAYERS UP NICELY WITH SOUND SOURCES INTO THE EXTERNAL INPUT AND THE KEYBOARD.

***3 CHANNEL MIXER***
KEYBOARD LEVEL
ATARI PUNK CONSOLE LEVEL
EXTERNAL INPUT LEVEL

THE SYNTH IS FITTED WITH AN EXTERNAL INPUT THAT YOU CAN FEED ANYTHING INTO MAKING IT AN OPEN ENDED
BEAST FOR SOUND MANIPULATION.

A TINY LITTLE SYNTH WITH A HUGE SOUND. QUITE SWEET IN IT'S LITTLE WAY AND CAPABLE OF BEING BOTH NICE AND NASTY TO WHATEVER DEGREE YOU WANT TO PUSH IT. IF YOU'RE AFTER SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT WITHOUT HAVING TO RUN AN ANALOGUE SYNTH THROUGH A CHAIN OF FX PEDALS THEN YOU'LL ENJOY THIS MACHINE. IT HOLDS IT'S OWN AS A BASIC RETRO ANALOGUE SYNTH WITH IT'S NICE ANALOGUE FILTER AND TAKES IT ALL TO A DIFFERENT LEVEL. FOR FILM SCORE WORK, WITCH HOUSE, POWER ELECTRONICS AND INDUSTRIAL NOISE THIS MACHINE IS A KILLER."

Elby Designs CGS735 Synthacon Filter Module

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
See Perfect Circuit Audio (RSS) for more.

"The CGS735 Synthacon Filter is a "tribute" module, based on the awesome Steiner-Parker Synth VCF.

Unlike most multimode filters, which have a single input and seperate mode (LP/HP/BP) outputs, this filter has an input for each mode and a single output. This gives the filter a ton of character and allows for a lot of interesting effects. Resonance is a bit unusual in its behavior. Once it starts oscillating, the resonance pot needs to be backed off a fair way to get it to stop again. It can also be frequency dependent.

This module includes an input mixer. Each of the filter type inputs has its own level control. The ALL input is also affected by these level pots as it is mixed with the individual inputs prior to the level controls. If using only a single input, it may be better to feed the signal into the ALL input, and adjust the level pots to select LP, BP or HP, rather than changing the patch cord between the specific input jacks.

If the same signal is used in all inputs, the result is reminiscent of a phaser. The real fun starts when you feed different signals into each input, then you get a frequency based "interpolating scanner", where sweeping between different sound sources is possible, though also subject to the frequency at which they are running.

Features

All input - Feeds input to all modes
Highpass, Bandpass, and Lowpass modes
Input and level knob per mode
Resonance level knob
Cutoff Frequency knob
Cutoff Frequency CV in with level knob
Single Output"

Circuit Bent Casio SK-5 with CGS Synthacon Filter

YouTube via thenervoussquirrel
"This was made for Colin Cloughley, creator of fine industrial techno.

Knobs, L-R: keyboard filter mode select (LP, BP, HP), cutoff, resonance, LED sensitivity, instrument pitch, drum pitch.

Sockets L-R: filter control voltage in, external lowpass in, bandpass in, highpass in, keyboard out, keyboard out via filter.

The switches in the centre connect the circuit bent modifications.

The video contains sounds generated by the SK-5 alone, except for the very last clip where the filter is being modulated by an external LFO.

The filter was made from Ken Stone's Synthacon VCF schematic. Please visit Ken's amazing website for an incredible collection of useful information, and PCBs for sale:

Todd Barton - Analog Horizonings

"a very mellow collection of ambient soundscapes featuring the EVI-2000 along with the S-P Synthacon, Buchla, Serge and JP-8"

http://cdbaby.com/cd/toddbarton

"After four decades of exploration Todd Barton is still delving deeply into the ever-expanding frontiers of musical expression: from his DNA derived Genome Music to his innovative scores for plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival; from performances of Zen Shakuhachi Meditation Music to avant-garde music for electronic synthesizers and computers; from performing with luminaries of jazz and poetry to lecturing on music and composition from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century.

Todd's music has been heard on NPR’s Morning Edition, Westcoast Live, and the Curve of Wonder.

Since 1979 Todd has been exploring electronic systhesis and computer-based music. His love for vintage analog synthesisers continues to this day.

Over the years Todd has collaborated with a variety of jazz musicians and poets including Anthony Braxton, Zakir Hussein, William Stafford, Ursula K. Le Guin and Lawson Fusao Inada.

Synthacon VCF Ken Stone MOTM Synthesizers.com

No title link. Just a shot via this auction

"This module is a "tribute" module from Ken Stone, based on the awesome Steiner-Parker Synthacon VCF.

Unlike the original, this version allows signals to be fed into all inputs simultaneously. If the same signal is used in all inputs, the result is reminiscent of a phaser.

The real fun starts when you feed different signals into each input, then you get a frequency based "interpolating scanner", where panning between different sound sources is possible, though also subject to the frequency at which they are running. I have never heard an effect like it before.

This is a great filter, by the way, with lots of character. It sounds very Moog ladderish with the low pass input, and mixing VCOs into the LP, HP and BP inputs gives some great effects."

I love the knobs on the module.

Nervous Gender - Live 1983 on YouTube

synth punk featuring an ARP Odyssey. Not sure what the other synth is. If you know feel free to comment.

via Greg Toumassian

Update: Looks there are actually a couple of other synths. Greggo in the comments is pretty sure one is a Moog satellite. You can see the Moog logo towards the end. There is also a silver Steiner-Parker Synthacon! If you are seeing what I'm seeing for the image in the post, that's it. Trip. Don't see those often.

Update via Tommy DOG in the comments:
"Yep. My friend Paul Roessler is the one playing the Synthacon and then there's a Satallite."

X1L3 - Circuit bent - Synth mod - Casio PT82 / PT87

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Published on Jun 30, 2014 manufacturedZ3R0 .

via this auction

"Back to where it all started.

No eye candy or wooden ends etc. I wanted substance over superficiality. As much as i enjoyed doing the larger machines and will probably do more when i think i've something signifigant to add again (like midi / adsr etc) i started to feel that the curious aspect of these little instruments that sparked my interest was getting lost in some kind of pseudo synthesizer territory to the point where i might as well have just moved on to total synth diy and ditched working on these things. I've taken what i've learned along the way and what i can do now, miniaturised it all for purpose and put it to work with the fundamentals of the circuit bending that bought me to where i am and what i can do now. The charm and fun of a bespoke circuit bent keyboard but with a sound that stretches from vanilla to hell.

I wanted a compact machine which made space very limited. So i opted to ditch all the drum mute/distortion bends and keep just the pitch control bend which is so easily applied to these. Grunge bossa nova and disco get old fast. I wanted this to be something you could sample the hell out of for trashed up noise and quirky analogue hits and sounds. It's heart revolves around additional circuitry. An embedded psu/supressor to power the keyboard, filter and delay efficiently and of course the filter and delay themselves. It also has a CV input around the side that allows you to modulate the filter cutoff via other equipment. In this case a sequential circuits Pro 1 with note sequences programmed to send out cv patterns.

The intro to this video was made using samples from this machine and the sampler/fx processing of propellerheads reason. Probably most apparent as the intro peaks with the delay crash.

I think i've got it right and i think this is something different and diverse within the realm. But i suppose like most things it's a matter of taste as to if you like this particular flavour or not :)"

Modifications and embedded circuitry:

Analogue resonant filter with high pass and low pass bands
Gain, resonance, low pass/high pass toggle and cutoff
A brilliant filter based on the synthacon.
Lot's of resonance and a unique character.

Digital 'death industrial' delay
Rate, noise, feedback, off/on toggle
This delay variant is based on what i've learned from modifying delay pedals in the past.
Quite an aggressive version that can dial up some serious noise as well as act as a pseudo reverb/conventional echo.

PSU - DC hum suppression circuitry
A regulated psu is now built into the machine.
This gives a stable and quiet power supply to both the keyboard and additional circuitry as well as
providing a quiet output and excellent noise floor.
Input voltage is 9 - 12V
Since filming the video the master power switch has been moved from the side of the machine to the top control panel which is a better position and looks neater.

Control voltage input to filter cutoff
3.5mm jack. Allows you to hook the casio up to your cv enabled equipment to modulate the filter.
Examples of this are shown in the demo video.
The cv modulation is provided by a sequential circuits pro1.

Master pitch control
Gives a large global pitch range - demonstrated in the demo video
Since filming the video a body contact has been added to the side of the machine which gives a handy way of pitch bending and modulation.

X1L3 - circuit bent Casio PT-80 with midi retrofit + eurorack - The trip

Published on Jul 23, 2016 manufacturedZ3R0

"Casiotone trance.

Audio is slightly out of sync with the video, but the sun will still rise in the morning.

Playing the Pt-80 via midi from reason. Under pinned with a 4/4 sequence. An A/R generator is being triggered on 16th notes on my eurorack, also via midi. The attack/release is connected to the CV input on the casio, spiking the filter cutoff with a short envelope for the first and final sections of the vid. The envelope is turned off on the breakdown (0.50 - 1.22) allowing the filter cutoff to flat line and follow only the cutoff knob manually.

Additional tronix:

XILE Midi retrofit on channel 15
PT2399 delay
Steiner synthacon resonant filter
Front mounted led array (midi activity indicator)
Regulated internal psu board

Raw bends:

Pitch control
Kick mute
Snare mute
Hi hat mute
Chord mute
Lead boost
Drum boost
Drum/lead combined distortion - merges the two in a dirty sort of way
