MidiBridge & SynthStation25 Allows Control of any CoreMIDI iPhone App!
YouTube Uploaded by idesignsound on Nov 29, 2011
"Here is a quick video showing how the MidiBridge app let's you use the Akai SynthStation25 to control any app that supports CoreMIDI (not just those that are compatible with the SS25).
Here I used BeepStreets SunrizerXS and CamelAudio's Alchemy Mobile, neither of which are currently compatible with the SS25.
At the end of the video you'll see that you can use MidiBridge to send the SS25 to two apps at the same time, so you can layer up! This means that MidiBridge is still useful for apps that are compatible with the SS25 as two or more apps patches can be layered to be played at the same time.
Sorry I didn't pick a great patch for Alchemy (bit quiet).

AKAI PRO SYNTHSTATION v1.2.1 AVAILABLE NOW VIA iTunes
"Update Adds Hardware Support for SynthStation25 keyboard, iOS 4 multitasking, High-Resolution Graphics for iPad and iPhone 4 and more
Cumberland, R.I. (Oct. 14, 2010) – Akai Professional, the name synonymous with music production, announces the immediate availability of SynthStation v1.2.1, the latest update to the music production app for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. SynthStation v1.2.1 is now available for download on the iTunes App Store.
SynthStation transforms an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into a portable music production studio. The app gives musicians three synthesizers, over 50 drum kits and a full mixing section with multiple effects to create loops and sequence entire songs. Musicians can record song performances to .WAV files and MIDI files of the performance, capturing all modulation, mixing and on-screen keyboard playing. Through a WIFI connection, the files can then be transferred to a computer for playback.
With the 1.2.1 update, SynthStation now provides complete support for Akai Professional’s SynthStation25 keyboard, the first ever music controller of its kind for iPhone and iPod Touch. This portable, 25-note mini-keyboard features a built-in dock for iPhone and iPod touch, and gives users two octaves of velocity-sensitive keys, pitch and modulation wheels, and physical buttons to control parameters within the SynthStation app. SynthStation25 also has a USB MIDI output that can be used to control any MIDI music software on a Mac or PC.
The SynthStation update provides compatibility with Apple’s latest mobile operating system iOS 4. Now all iPhone 4 users will be able to download and enjoy the SynthStation experience with multitasking and Retina display support. Furthermore, the SynthStation update utilizes the latest iOS to offer more stability, speed and overall performance enhancements. iPad users will appreciate the inclusion of crisp, high-res images designed specifically for the larger display as well.
“The SynthStation app transforms the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad into a professional synthesizer workstation in a streamlined, all-in-one program,” said Adam Cohen, Director of Business Development, Akai Professional. “With the latest SynthStation update musicians can take full advantage of pristine image quality on their iPhone 4 or iPad, and iPhone and iPod touch users are ready to plug into SynthStation25 and enjoy music creation using a physical keyboard as well as their touchscreens.”
The SynthStation app is available now and can be purchased from the iTunes App Store for $9.99 US.

Keyboard and controller for the SynthStation Studio App
The manufacturer says: The SynthStation25 turns an iPhone or iPod touch into a portable music studio. The combination of SynthStation25 and SynthStation Studio is powerful enough for professional musicians, and everyone can now easily make music.
My opinion: Will I be back no more after the test. An absolute must for all iPhone musicians. I stand before at loggerheads with the iPhone touchscreen. Especially clever are the additional audio outputs
iO2 Express 2 channel USB interface
The store, the manufacturer says: The iO2 EXPRESS is a compact audio interface for recording the studio, at home or unterwegs.Dank its small size makes it easily in the laptop bag or backpack and can be used anywhere, anytime.
My Opinion: At last, an interface with analog Insertwegen before the AD converter and for little money. I like the Urei 1178 compressor can therefore be deployed again. Hear what the times are good converters.

The Akai iPK25 Still Lives?
It's listed for $99 on the Nova Musik website here. No release date listed, but according to Chris in the comments of this post, Guitar Center and Musician's Friend have the release date listed as March 3rd. Still nothing on the Akai site.
Update: I heard from Akai. It is still on track, same price and release date. The name has officially changed to the SynthStation25. The info page was removed at Apple's request.
"The Akai iPK25...now renamed SynthStation25 does in fact live. When developing hardware for Apple ipod products, Apple has a large number of hoops for developers to jump through. There was one hoop we missed so Apple made us take down the information from our web page. We are now working our way through this issue and it will be back up on the web page when we are allowed to put it back there. This has not affected shipping dates or anything, just our ability to have info regarding it up on our web page."

AKAI SynthStation & SynthStation25 demo
Published on Jan 5, 2014 SynthMania·303 videos
"A very cool and inexpensive ($1.99 USD) app that reproduces classic synth sounds. I like the X/Y pad which allows real time modulation control (04:22) and overall it has nice, big virtual analog sonorities. It also has quality effects, sequencer, drums and other features. Use the hardware SynthStation25 and you have a full-fledged recording studio on the go."

NAMM: Akai Pro SynthStation49: Overview
YouTube Uploaded by AkaiProVideo on Jan 17, 2012
"SynthStation49 is the most advanced, intuitive music controller designed specifically for use with the iPad or iPad 2 and the first true iPad performance tool for musicians. Working seamlessly with Akai Professional's heralded SynthStation software, SynthStation49 provides unparalleled music creation capabilities, including direct in-app MIDI recording from its velocity-sensitive keyboard, nine MPC-style drum pads and array of transport controls. In addition to its integration with the SynthStation app, SynthStation49 is also completely iOS CoreMIDI compatible, making it instantly compatible with dozens of music apps already in the App Store and hundreds more on the way."
Note the SynthStation49 was announced at NAMM last year. The SynthStation25 has been available for some time as you can find on eBay here. Note the iPad 3 is rumored to be coming as soon as February and if not, definitely sometime this year. Apple keeps the design under wraps, so we won't know if this will work out of the box with it. If not, hopefully Akai will provide an adapter like Alesis did with the IO Dock.
Key Features:
Portable, velocity-sensitive keyboard with pitch and modulation wheels
Nine velocity-sensitive MPC-style drum pads which light when triggered
Dedicated transport control buttons including Play, Pause and Record
Play MIDI keyboard and drum pad performances into an iPad via CoreMIDI or AkaiConnect apps
Built-in, adjustable dock charges your iPad while positioning the screen at the perfect angle
USB port for connecting to a Mac or PC, receiving power and controlling MIDI music software
Works with iPad or iPad 2
Professional ¼" stereo outputs with volume control to connect mixers, speakers and recording equipment
Headphone output to practice and compose in private

Professional ¼” outputs and extreme portability ensure you’ll be able to take your sequences straight to the stage at a moments notice.
SynthStation49 is the only full-featured, professional keyboard controller allowing direct MIDI performance recording onto an iPad. Bridging Akai Professional’s popular MPK controllers with the previously released SynthStation25, SynthStation49 provides immense software control with forty-nine, full-size velocity-sensitive keys, nine backlit MPC-style drum pads and full transport buttons. An adjustable-angled dock for iPad allows the user to easily slide their tablet into the SynthStation49’s cradle and position the screen to their preference.
SynthStation49’s keyboard, pitch/modulation wheels and sustain pedal input provide great feel and the essential controls for musicians and producers to compose, record and perform. The nine drum pads of SynthStation49 give users immediate, intuitive beat-creation capabilities over the 50 classic and modern kits available within the SynthStation software. Program, Sequence, Song select and Transport buttons also provide quick navigation to the SynthStation App’s most used components for a seamless, efficient workflow.
SynthStation49 also contains a stereo pair of professional ¼” TRS outputs with volume knob for easy connecting to other pro audio equipment on stage or in the studio. A headphone output also lets users practice and compose in private. The SynthStation49’s USB port can be connected directly to a Mac or PC computer to receive power in addition to transmitting MIDI to and from music software – a great way to turn the SynthStation App or other CoreMIDI compatible App into a sound module. You can even use SynthStation49 as a traditional USB MIDI controller with your computer - no iPad required!

One Step Closer: Apple iPhone OS 4.0 to Include Multitasking
via AppleInsider
"Apple this summer will go a long way towards silencing critics and catering to one of the most prevalent demands of its iPhone user base, when it introduces a multitasking solution through the handset's 4.0 software update that will finally allow several third party apps to run concurrently and in the background."
I'm guessing this will make it's way to the iPad. If you remember this post, I'm obviously pretty excited about the slate format, both Windows and the iPad. I have an iPhone and what makes it is how responsive it is to gestures. There's no lag. For me, the screen, however, is too small for a proper full featured UI in regards to editing and controlling synths, both internal and external. My biggest disappointment with the announcement of the iPad was that it would not support multitasking, so you'd be limited to running one audio or one controller app at a time. Now this may not be so much of an issue. My other grip was lack of ports, specifically a USB port for MIDI controllers, but now that OSC and some new hardware like Akai's SynthStation25 and iConnectMIDI may have this solved.

FL Studio Mobile | Akai SynthStation25 Compatible
YouTube Uploaded by imageline on Jun 29, 2011
"FL Studio Mobile Tutorial Playlist - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?p=PL60A6ABB92691D0FF
If you want, load mobile projects into FL Studio and take them to the next level.
FL Studio Mobile available from the App store.
More info - http://support.image-line.com/knowledgebase/base.php?id=85
Yes the hand is inside the iPad. With proper training and diet it is possible to fit the FL Studio Guru INSIDE an iPad.
FL STUDIO MOBILE FAQ
What about Android OS? It's on the roadmap, stop nagging! We have a development team working on a low-latency Android audio-engine and there are many screen resolutions and device specifications to consider, it's not as simple as you may think :)
Does this mean FL Studio on Mac OSX soon? FL Studio Mobile is not a port of the Windows version of FL Studio. It is the product of a completely separate development team, and code, so FL Studio Mobile, while compatible with FL Studio has no impact on FL Studio development and vice versa.
Can I load my own samples? Not in version 1.0. We plan to enable user uploads in a future update.
Can I use VSTs? No, iOS does not support VSTs and frankly the devices it runs on don't have the CPU power to perform the synthesis you are used to on a desktop. FL Studio Mobile uses high quality sample based instruments made from Image-Line plugins and sample packs."

iOS 4.2 Supports CoreMIDI
via Appleinsider
"Support for CoreMIDI
The first beta of iOS 4.2 adds support for the CoreMIDI framework to the operating system's application program interfaces. This could suggest that future applications would allow new avenues for musical creation, and could also allow physical MIDI instruments connectors.
MIDI, or Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is an industry standard that allows electronic music machines to synchronize and communicate. With an adapter, a device like an iPhone could theoretically create and record sounds from a MIDI instrument."
MIDI for everyone! :) Why is this important? Currently MIDI devices like the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer and Akai SynthStation25 require developers to use their proprietary SDKs to talk to their devices. This translates to more work for developers if they want to support different devices. Not just for the initial release of their apps but anytime there is an update to the SDK. With CoreMIDI they can just focus on it and let hardware manufacturers decide to support it or not. I'm also guessing KORG would be more likely to support CoreMIDI on the iElectribe vs. another company's SDK. We are getting very close to syncing iPads and iPhones with other gear folks. BTW, don't miss this post on The Missing Link.

Wireless MIDI via OSC using Pianist Pro
Another step closer. Is this the first iPad instrument/synth app with native OSC support?
YouTube via MooCowMusic — April 21, 2010 — "New for Pianist Pro in the V1.2 update.
Control your DAW and hardware synths wirelessly via OSC with Pianist Pro. Use Pure Data (a free application for both OSX and Windows) on your PC to receive the OSC calls and translate them into MIDI messages to suit your setup.
Play your digital piano from the sofa, or even from another room...

via MooCowMusic:
"We've added OSC support so that you can use your iPad to control your DAW or hardware synths wirelessly. All you need to do is install a simple (and free) application called "Pure Data" onto a PC / Mac on the same wireless network as your iPad, and use the provided patch to convert the OSC messages sent by Pianist Pro into MIDI messages. Those MIDI messages can be recorded on your DAW, and control soft or hardware synthesisers. Pure Data patches are easily configured to suit your setup. Play your digital piano from your sofa, or even from another room!
We are just putting the finishing touches to this free update and hope to have it submitted to Apple in the next couple of days.

Another step closer. Is this the first iPad instrument/synth app with native OSC support?
The holy grail will be the ability to go directly from your iPad to your hardware synths for multi-track sequencing (with virtual sliders and knobs to control assignable parameters), along with the ability to sync your native iPad synths with your external gear, all, of course, wirelessly. The only way this will scale across multiple apps is if we have a new standard - here's hoping OSC becomes that standard.
Currently I'm aware of three manufacturers with hardware MIDI for the iPad:
Akai's SynthStation25
Line 6's MIDI Mobilizer
iConnectivity's iConnectMIDI
I'm not sure if any of these plan to use OSC. If you are watching, please look into this.
Currently I have my eye on iConnectMIDI. There's no mention of OSC, but if you look at the iPad/iPhone app icons on their website, you will see what looks like an icon for Pianist Pro.
BTW, I just created an OSC label. As you can imagine searching on OSC brought up a ton of posts mentioning oscillators rather than Open Sound Control. That said, I'm sure I'm missing a ton of OSC posts in the archives. If you spot any, comment in the post, or shot me an email and I'll update it.
