"In this video, we take a deep dive into the Kurzweil K2061/K2088 and explore creative V.A.S.T. programming inspired by the legendary Juno-60 sound.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series. We’ll build the patch you heard at the beginning completely from scratch, using only a single saw wave as our starting point.

Rather than recreating a vintage synth directly, this patch expands on the Juno’s classic single-oscillator architecture — demonstrating how Kurzweil’s powerful V.A.S.T. synthesis engine can transform a simple waveform into something far deeper and more expressive.

In this episode, you’ll see how to:
• Design a full synth patch from a single oscillator
• Shape tone using VAST DSP architecture
• Create movement and depth with Kurzweil FX
• Use physical controllers to add expression and performance dynamics
• Push beyond traditional analog limitations while preserving classic character

The goal is simple: show just how much is possible with one waveform, thoughtful programming, and the immense flexibility of VAST.

KURZWEIL K2061: more affordable VAST synthesis

"Kurzweil's new models, the K2061 and K2088, could be seen unplugged at NAMM 2024, but this year they were fully functional and we were able to see them, touch them and try them out, paying more attention to the cheaper K2061.

🎹 Main technical specifications:
V.A.S.T. synthesis engine with VA capability, 6-operator FM and organ modeling
256 polyphony voices
32 parts per program and 16 MIDI zones
4GB total memory (divided between factory and user)
32 simultaneous effects
16-track sequencer

The keyboards use Fatar mechanisms: TP/9 semi-weighted on the K2061 and TP/40L with hammer action on the K2088. Both models include channel aftertouch and a ribbon controller. The interface has a non-touch 480x272 pixel color display and a set of physical controls. Editor software for Windows and MacOS has been announced.

The K2061 is significantly cheaper than the K2700 ($2,199), while the 2088 is similarly priced ($2,999)."

NAMM 2025: Kurzweil's New K2088 & K2061 Synths

"At NAMM 2025, we caught up with Fran from Kurzweil, who introduced us to their latest offerings, the K2088 and *K2061*. These new models aimed to recreate the classic K2000 feel with modern advancements. Kurzweil focused on integrating a vast library of sounds from the K2000 era, packing over 2,000 programs and 500 multis. You could expect enhanced polyphony with 256 voices and extensive synth capabilities, including a sophisticated FM engine.

Incorporating the famed Fatar TP9 keybed, the new synths supported regular aftertouch but skipped on polyphonic options, concentrating on delivering solid synth action. Features like a 16-track sequencer remained intact, although missing USB audio support--a detail reserved for high-end models like the K2700. The models boasted four outputs for extensive routing options and had generous sample storage, loaded with 2GB user-loadable space. Although some software DSP algorithms are missing, most classic Kurzweil sounds remain playable with enhanced modern effects."
